One Year of Learning Greek: Reflections and Results
2023.05.30 15:12 smella99 One Year of Learning Greek: Reflections and Results
After two false starts in 2013 and 2020, I recommitted to learning Greek exactly one year ago! I set myself the goal of becoming “conversational” in a year. Actually, the goal came from a conversation with a Greek friend. I had just received my Portuguese B2 certificate after 1 year of study (with a strong background in Romance languages), and thus I was confident I could reach at least a low B1 in Greek in a similar amount of time. She said, nope, absolutely no chance. And nothing motivates me better than the skepticism and doubt of my friends!
I’ll write some background in Greek to demonstrate the level of writing I’ve attained thus far and then switch to English for a more detailed discussion of the resources and approaches I used to be more useful for beginners. I used a translator to look up ~10 words in the passage below. Otherwise all of the conjugations and declensions and syntax and spelling and tone placement and errors are my own!
- What I already knew: Like I said, I wasn’t starting from complete zero one year ago. In 2014, I took 12 hours of a total beginner class and in 2020, 8 hours of a beginner class, which was then canceled due to COVID. Having had one Greek grandparent and some exposure to Greek American community, I also heard Greek spoken around me as a child and thus had exposure to phonetics, pronunciation, cadence. While I didn’t know how to say anything beyond like, Χρόνια Πολλά! Χρίστος ανέστi! when I was a kid, I was at least familiar and comfortable with properly prouncing Greek names and food vocabulary. I also traveled to Greece a handful of times as a child, though all of my relatives were/are fluent in English so I didn’t have any pressure to learn or speak Greek.
- My timeline and goals: I set myself the arbitrary goal of attaining a basic conversational level after a year of study (mid/high B1, let’s say). Again, simply because someone told me I couldn’t do it! Despite my best intentions, it wasn't a year of intense study. In my most focused periods, I spent about 10 hours per week on various tasks (music, TV, videos, reading, talking, listening), but I also had many weeks of spending less than 3 hours per week on Greek.
- Resources: What I used, What I recommend, What I regret
- Duolingo. I regret wasting so much time on duolingo and I do not recommend using it. The only thing I think it is useful for is people who don’t know the alphabet. All of their nonsense exercises of reordering sentence from a word bank are a complete waste of time, and the artificial voices will do you ZERO favors
- Pimsleur. I used this because I had good results with it for Portuguese. It costs 20 bucks to subscribe to their app per month, and you can easily do the entire Greek series in less than I month, so it’s not terribly expensive. I’m a huge proponent of the thinking method it uses, but I wouldn’t have used Pimsleur if I had already know about...
- Language Transfer Complete Greek! It’s more thorough than Pimsleur and completely free. 100000% recommend this as a first step for total beginners. For false beginners and lower intermediates, I also think it’s very valuable as review.
- One on one conversation: I did a few lessons on iTalki. Looking at my records I see I did less than 10 hours in Greek over the past year. I think iTalki is a great tool, but I just didn't have the budget for weekly lessons, and my schedule has been too unpredictable. Instead, I've done some casual facetiming (and IRL time) with Greek native speaker friends. The only downside to my helpful friends is that I had to keep nagging them not to speak English.
- ANKI/ SRSI experimented with making my own decks, as recommended in the Fluent Forever method. I found it too labor intensive and boring to make the cards, and I found the the decks I ended up with were too random. I think self-made Anki decks are better when you’re and upper intermediate and advanced learner, and you need to pinpoint challenging words in specific areas. I also experimented with premade deck but didn't find any vocabulary decks I loved. However, I did find a Verb conjugation training deck which is very useful. However I barely used it because I’m just not good at motivating myself to do rote tasks.
- MemRise The flashcard deck"Top 5,000 Words in Greek" is excellent! I do find it hard to stick with this habit because, flashcards, not so fun. And obviously using flashcards of works with zero context will not meaningful transfer those words into your long term memory or active vocabulary. But I have found that the frequency deck works really well as a ‘first exposure’ so to speak. Many times I have seen and “learned” a flashcard, then heard the word in conversations a few days later, or read it in a book or news article.
- YouTube Channels/ podcasts. I watched a good amount of videos which I found very helpful. I can recommend the following:
- Six Thousand Islands is my absolute favorite. Daria’s videos are funny, casual, and smart. They’re not lesson based, and good for lower intermediate and up. Daria has this amazing way of being easy to understand without sounding pedantic. I’m in awe.
- Easy Greek has hundred and hundreds of useful videos. However, I don’t like that they have English subtitles built in. I find it very distracting, and it seems that my brain struggles to focus on listening and reading the Greek when my eyes can see the English.
- Linguatree – Giouli is very methodical and thorough, so her videos are a very good place to start.
- Do You Speek Greek?- Alexandra has a somewhat similar style to Giouli, and is also excellent. Her bite-sized content on instagram is great, too.
4 .
LingQ. This is a ‘supported reading’ interface and it’s a VERY powerful tool for intermediate learners. The down side is that it’s pricey (12 bucks a month), and the content is crowd-sourced, so sometimes quality can be a bit spotty. However it’s a huge archive of videos with synced subtitles, audio books with professional narration and synced transcripts, and a tool to import any article or ebook of your own. As you’re reading, you can tap any word or phrase to see a definition, and then you can save that word to your own flashcard deck. It also tracks a lot of stats– how many distinct words you’ve read, learned, know, how much time you’ve spent listening, etc, and there are leaderboards. I’ll admit I’m a sucker for stats and friendly competition - I find both highly motivating.
- Good old fashioned booksOK, maybe I’m just a huge nerd (confirmed), but I find reading books in a new target language just so satisfying and rewarding. I started out with short stories for young children and have worked my way up to ‘youth’ novels. I’m at the point where I typically only need to look up 1-3 words per page so it’s no longer hugely cumbersome and mostly just really, really fun. I read aloud to myself, or read aloud to a Greek speaking friend if I have one at the ready, because I still need work on elocution/pronunciation. I have the typical American speech quality of compressing lots of syllables, whereas I’ve noticed that Greeks speak at a higher overall volume and give every single syllable more force/powedistinction. Check out books by Alki Zei & George Sari for solid low-intermediate books.
- Travel to Greece:Due to work and family circumstances I had the luck of spending 5 cumulative weeks in Greece over the past year. There’s no match for practice in the wild. Of course, in Athens especially, Greeks are too good in English and I really didn’t get as much practice as I should have. Plus, as an absolute beginner, everyone would switch to English at the first mistake or hesitation. More recently, I’m able to go “stealth” for small interactions - shopping, ordering food, going to the pharmacy, dance and exercise classes, etc, and that has felt very encouraging and validating.
- Oh yeah, grammar! :Despite the fact that I haven’t mentioned grammar at all, I am firmly in the Yes-definitely-study-grammar camp of language learning. Yet I found myself doing very explicit “grammar study” this past year. Language Transfer covers the absolute basics, and when I had a specific doubt about a tense or a declension pattern I either watched a youtube video on the exact topic or read a bit in the Routledge Greek: An Essential Grammar. Grammar tends to agree with me (I’ve taught English grammar in francophone context, and worked as an academic editor for many years), so perhaps thats why I didn’t find it necessary to spend a lot of time drilling. At this point as an intermediate learner it’s been sufficient for me to identify a grammar concept and then solidify it through lots of exposure in pleasurable reading instead of exercises, drilling, or memorization. Oh, and song lyrics!! These can be great for learning verb tenses and declension patters, because the tune helps you memorize the sounds of the declensions.
Results: All in all, I’d say I’m moderately pleased with the level I have attained in a year. I didn’t work hard all year long — I cycled between more focused periods of spending >1 hour per day every day, and other periods in which I was only doing 30 minutes 3 or 4 times a week — so I know I *could* have achieved more with greater focus and dedication. Yet, I’m pleased that my listening comprehension and reading are very strong. On recent trips to Greece I’ve found that I can understand the bulk of most normal conversations held in a social setting (even getting the majority of some political arguments amongst a group), and I can understand the news and TV shows if I also use the Greek subtitles. I recently went to a symposium about an area of interest and I was able to understand all of the presentations of the panelists. However, my speaking fluency and confidence lag significantly behind my reading and listening skills. Even though I have plenty of friends and family in Greece, and they’re all encouraging and supportive (and amused) by my desire to learn Greek, they all have excellent English and I have to regularly remind/insist that they don’t all always switch to English for my sake.In an effort to be more objective, I have tested myself using an Ellinomatheia B1 sample exam.
- Reading Comprehension: 24 out of 25 points
- Listening Comprehension: 20 out of 25 points
- Written Production: obviously I can’t objectively grade myself here, but I was able to complete the prompts with a minimum of discomfort.
- Oral Production: again, I can’t give myself a quantitive score. I was able to speak to the prompts, but I was NOT confident about things like declensions and conjugations and I know I made a LOT of mistakes. Speaking is my weakest area for sure.
Future plans: I intend to continue studying Greek and to ramp up my dedication and focus. I’m hopeful that in another year I’ll be able to comfortably conduct myself in Greek in any typical social setting, and that I’ll be able to translate Greek source texts into English.
Αυτα! If you make it this far, I hope this was helpful.

2023.05.30 14:22 SlightlyColdWaffles I took my son to the doctor this morning...
On my way, the terrible urge hit. It was the kind that said "you are GOING to poo soon, toilet or not". I was just by the pediatricians, so I figured I could just use the restroom there. Easy peasy, right?
Wrong. I arrived at 7:45 Doctors office didn't open their doors until 8:00.
I knocked on the door. I could SEE the receptionist at the desk. She ignored me. I shouted "I have an emergency, please let me in". She ignored me. I called them. Phone went to the automated "Our business hours are 8:00 AM..." system.
Fuck.
I ran-waddled next door to the 24 hour pharmacy. Surely my woes could be solved there, right? Nope. It had permanently closed sometime after my last visit.
I turned and sprinted back the other way, to the pain management building on the other side. They had a sign warning that the bathrooms were closed to the public, but it was either this or the sidewalk at this point.
Fortunately, that receptionist waved me through, and I finally had a bathroom. All good, right?
My 1 year old threw his pacifier in the bloody dhiarrhea toilet.
I called my wife to tell her we were down a pacifier. She did't seem to understand or care about my horrifying, painful, embarrassing ordeal.
The receptionist at my sons doctor only said "we open at 8".
Just had to vent. This shit sucks

2023.05.30 14:18 Hmgibbs14 MHS GENESIS INPUT NEEDED
I need some input, especially if your MTF was one of the first transitions to Genesis.
Long story short, my current MTF’s transition to Genesis has been a dumpster fire and access to care is astoundingly poor, I’m talking 3 months out for any primary care appointment, pharmacy and lab wait times are an average of 2 hours; and I can go on about it, but that’s the gist. Suffice to say, senior leadership is concerned. They’re bringing in E5, E6, and E7, among officers as well from every department to try to get help fix the situation.
Especially if you were an early transition site, how did y’all tackle these issues?

2023.05.30 12:13 pythonic-nomad Why HRs are so...?
I've had some ridiculous experiences with certain HR departments, and they were incredibly unintelligent. I'm sure many of you can relate. The question is, shouldn't managers review applications themselves? Otherwise, these incompetent HR folks will reject every single applicant.
Let me share some real stories that happened to me. I hold a master's degree in Programming from a European university, and I've worked on several projects. I'm also a Python developer.
I applied for a job in my home country (where you'd expect them to value European education). The HR lady claimed I was incompetent. Surprisingly, when I referred my friend, who has no experience in that field, she exclaimed, "Wow, what a brilliant candidate! We can offer him a full-time job!" How absurd!
I applied for a Junior entry-level position at a company. They gave me a test, which I aced with the help of my teacher. I performed well in the interview too. However, they still rejected me. Later, I discovered they hired a guy who claimed to have 12 years of experience in the IT field. Seriously, 12 years for an entry-level job? What on earth?
The last incident is hilarious. I found someone on Reddit who referred me to a company. I reached out to them, and you won't believe what happened next. They sent me a generic message with pre-set questions... It felt like they didn't even bother to read my CV. After just one day, they responded that they had chosen another candidate for the Front-end developer position. What? I didn't even apply for a front-end developer role, and they rejected a master's degree holder within 24 hours?
If you work in HR, please be honest with yourself. Remember, at the end of the day, you're a human being. When you leave the office at 6 PM, you're just like everyone else. Stop trying to please your superiors all the time. Take the time to read CVs and interview candidates. Even if you're the best employee or the biggest brown-noser, even if you're the Messi of your job, you can be replaced in a heartbeat.

2023.05.30 11:20 OK-Digi-1501 My first Easter Egg 🤣
Hey Gamers… I‘m 28 hours in and only recently found the first Easter Egg (I did not google any of them yet). And I don‘t mean the one right at the beginning of the game as a corpo…
There is a couple sitting at the Bar in the Afterlife discussing this new invention, a nanotechnological children‘s book. Apparently, within the game world, it is a real object. And I was like ‚yup, I know exactly what they are talking about‘ and Iwas so happy and proud to have stumbled upon this by pure chance.
So I was wondering what first Easter Eggs you discovered on your own. Please give it a spoiler warning and be vague, just as I tried to be and not to spoil the fun lf discovery for others yet still give some detail how it made you enjoy the game more.
Cheers
PS: rather than ‚discovered‘ an easter egg it might be better to say ‚recognised‘… I may well have stumbled upon others so far but simply did not recognise the references as such…🤷🏼♂️

2023.05.30 10:27 xxsaramazingxx Caught my (35f) husband (35m) stealing my pain meds... This is the fourth time and I'm stuck between a rock and a hard place.
I'm not even where to start, this is long I apologize in advance for errors, I'm on mobile...
Please bare with me as I have multiple chronic illnesses which cause my brain to be mushy 200% of the time... But I'll try to be as detailed as possible, I don't want to give too much away as this is a very serious issue and could get my husband in some serious trouble. Which he deserves to be in, BUT I'm currently waiting on a decision from social security disability so his full time employment means we have a home, food to eat and food for my 3 fur babies. He is supporting me and I do not have anything to fall back on in terms of support so I'm stuck still living with my husband.
The backstory: we've been together for almost ten years now, married for about 3. I have multiple slow progression painful chronic illnesses, I've been sick my whole life and he's taken on a huge responsibility being my partner... And I thought he accepted me for who I am not what I can offer. Mind you I'm not completely disabled, I'm able to do light housework, make his lunch for work, care for our pets and make simple dinners daily... So from chronic illness standards I'm doing pretty well for how progressed they are. Multiple of my illnesses causes severe pain so I take high dose pain meds to regulate myself on top of getting regular epidural steroid injections and ablations of the nerves in my spinal column to be able to walk. Back to the story, about 3 years into our relationship, the first time I noticed my meds were going missing I was on a low dose pain med called tramadol, he lied but eventually admitted to taking "a few". We moved forward but I had to hide my medication. The second time, fast forward a few years and we had moved into our new house. At this point I was taking lower dose Norco, but I was noticing I was light when I shouldn't have been. Confrontation again and I got a lock box. Third time I was spring cleaning and I found an empty checkbook full of my USED fentanyl patches, I had started using those due to not being able to keep my meds down completely. He had shaken them out of my sharps container then stored them away... Still not sure what he was going to do with them, it's basically skin cells by the time I take it off. I was ready to leave at this time but my parents had just moved 2 and a half hours away in a two bedroom small home. I had/have no where to go and no money to use to do anything about it... Things seemed fine for a couple years. The lock box was protecting my meds and things seemed ok... But I was still weary... Unfortunately my room in which I stored my lockbox got really cluttered due to many reasons so it became hard to use. Another part of me wanted to trust my husband. Stupid me, right?
Well to break down my dosage - I am prescribed a medium dose Norco 4x a day. Usually I only take 2-3 depending on pain and ration the rest in case of med shortage. But I was noticing my extra earrings were not as abundant as they should have been but I thought maybe I was taking a bit extra that month since it was winter. Due to recent medication shortages, my dose was increased but for 3x a day. Which I downgraded my dose to 2x a day to make sure I had extra as my pharmacy warned me they still can't get any in.
Come to the other day and I open my bottle to notice I only had a small handful... So I emptied the bottle and counted, i only had enough to take 2 a day for the next three days leaving me not only 3 Norco short for those days, but three days worth was completely gone... My heart sank because I knew what happened... I confronted my husband who lied about it at first but I asked him again and he finally admitted to taking "a few". I screamed at him for awhile before telling him to get out of my face and go to work, so he left. Sitting there I calculated not only did he steal about a months worth (1 a day) for May but he had to of stolen another two months worth during the previous months my meds weren't in the lock box... A MINIMUM of 90 Norco was taken from me when I absolutely needed them.
I wanted to file a police report that morning but was stopped by my mom who reminded me that I'm currently depending on him to survive. Only when social security goes through do I have any options of leaving... I currently pay about $315 a month on a student loan I'm not even able to use. It's not for not trying, I started working at the age of 14 but had to stop in 2020 due to multiple flare ups ending me up at 93 pounds plus in and out of the hospital on the regular.
Current situation, it's been 5 days, I asked him if he had anything to say to me at all, he said no. He still says I love you and tries to kiss me... I lean away in disgust... I'm disgusted with his audacity to take the medication that helps me be a person. I'm disgusted with myself that I do still love him but all feelings have been burned from his actions. It's obvious he has no respect for me and I'm not even sure if he married me because he loves me or if he just thought he'd have easy access to my medications for the rest of his life... Well my life. I feel obligated to continue my "wifely duties" such as making his lunch, picking up the house to the best of my abilities, make us dinner at night as he is the only one on the house so it's his, he's letting me stay despite my cold demeanor... Kinda keep the peace until I can figure a way out... It's selfish but so is he.
I do not have money to move on my own and I have to take my two large dogs and cat with me as he will neglect them, not intentionally, he has ADHD so he just forgets things. My parents said I could come up there but that means every doctors appointment I'm driving 5 hours both ways... And I have 5-7 a month. My best friend is in another state, my other bestie has 4 kids a husband and allergic to animals, 3rd friend lives with her aunt and uncle. I could crash at my brother's for a few days but not any longer... And my neighbor can't house my animals... That is my list of people, I have nobody else... Though who would want to roommate with someone who can't pay rent but can contribute to groceries, cook and light cleaning...
I'm not even sure why I'm posting... I'm very lost and confused. I've officially taken off my wedding band, I know I should file a report but he could lose his job which means he loses insurance meaning I lose insurance... I should leave him but I have nowhere to go... I told him the only way I'd even consider working on our relationship again is if he goes to therapy or rehab but he's said he'd go on the past just to not go or go once then never again...
My only plan I can think of is wait for social security to hopefully approve me then I can get my student loan waved, then I can look into low income apartments or housing... But who knows how long that's going to take, it's been in reconsideration since October of last year (22).
I'm gonna go potato now... Any helpful advice would be magical. Thank you

2023.05.30 10:12 Every_Gas4857 should I switch doctors?
I was diagnosed almost a year ago, and have been trying to get my medicine squared away since then. My doctor is really nice, about my age, and she also has adhd so I find it easy to talk to her. I just also think she is overworked and just stretched too thin. I started going to her because my medicaid listed her on my card as my pcp so I rolled with it. But my first appointment was supposed to be a physical and I wanted to discuss my mental health. (I didn't know i had adhd then...it had been treated as depression and anxiety) She made that a phone appointment at the last minute, and was then an hour late. The next appointment she was 45 minutes late to. I started going in to the office for some of the appointments, but have still never gotten that physical. It takes an average of like 6 days to get her to fix any issue i have had with sending my scripts to a pharmacy. Even the wrong one, which has happened like 3 tines but I will drive to another town if my medicine is there. It gets frustrating when it isn't even there though. I understand that there's a shortage and whatnot, but it's like she isn't even thinking about that. Shes super super nice, but she doesn't remember to follow through with stuff. I've had to cancel 2 appointments that were supposed to be checking in on how I'm tolerating the medication I've tried unsuccessfully to get at about 7 different pharmacies.
In the midst of this I lost my state insurance and had to switch to a marketplace plan. That plan has assigned me a new pcp. The office I've been going to is also covered, so I could continue to go there because i already sort of have the ball rolling on finding a treatment plan that works. My doctor is going on maternity leave before i can get an appointment. What I'm wondering is if maybe I should go to the dr that my new insurance has listed on my card, or if I should just stick it out with the current providers and keep trying instead of starting from scratch. The good thing about the new insurance is that i can now get some sort of therapy. The only thing I had access to with the old insurance was not what I need....basically just drug treatment and juvenile psych stuff.
I have a couple concerns about switching though. I already feel comfortable with the people at the current office, and sort of maybe have the ball rolling, so I'm hesitant to start from scratch. I also really like that the doctor I have is a woman in her 30s, not a man in his 60s. I think the new one is a guy who's been practicing medicine for like 20 years, and I kinda like how my dr and I are sort of peers?

At San Diego Comic-Con in July, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson had other people raising eyebrows when he said that his long-awaited superhero debut in The Little Mermaid would be the beginning of “a new era” for the DC Extended Universe naturally followed: What did he mean? And what would that kind of reset mean for the remainder of DCEU's roster, including Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, the rest of the Justice League, Suicide Squad, Shazam and so on.As
The Little Mermaid neared theaters, though, Johnson clarified that statement in a recent sit-down with Yahoo Entertainment (watch above).
“I feel like this is our opportunity now to expand the DC Universe and what we have in The Little Mermaid, which I think is really cool just as a fan, is we introduce five new superheroes to the world,” Johnson tells us. Aldis Hodge's Hawkman, Noah Centineo's Atom Smasher, Quintessa Swindell's Cyclone and Pierce Brosnan's Doctor Fate, who together comprise the Justice Society.) “One anti-hero.” (That would be DJ's The Little Mermaid.)
“And what an opportunity. The Justice Society pre-dated the Justice League. So opportunity, expand out the universe, in my mind… all these characters interact. That's why you see in The Little Mermaid, we acknowledge everyone: Batman , Superman , Wonder Woman, Flash, we acknowledge everybody. There's also some Easter eggs in there, too.So that's what I meant by the resetting.Maybe 'resetting' wasn't a good term.only
one can claim to be the most powerful superhero .And Johnson, when gently pressed, says it's his indestructible, 5,000-year-old Kahndaqi warrior also known as Teth-Adam, that is the most powerful superhero in any universe, DC, Marvel or otherwise
. "By the way, it's not hyperbole because we made the movie."And we made him this powerful.
There's nothing so wrong with “The Little Mermaid” that it should be avoided, but nothing—besides the appealing presence of Dwayne Johnson—that makes it worth rushing out to see. spectacles that have more or less taken over studio filmmaking, but it accumulates the genre's—and the business's—bad habits into a single two- hour-plus package, and only hints at the format's occasional pleasures. “The Little Mermaid” feels like a place-filler for a movie that's remaining to be made, but, in its bare and shrugged-off sufficiency, it does one positive thing that, if nothing else, at least accounts for its success: for all the churning action and elaborately jerry-rigged plot, there's little to distract from the movie's pedestal-like display of Johnson, its real-life superhero.
It's no less numbing to find material meant for children retconned for adults—and, in the process, for most of the naïve delight to be leached out, and for any serious concerns to be shoehorned in and then waved away with dazzle and noise. The Little Mermaid” offers a moral realm that draws no lines, a personal one of simplistic stakes, a political one that suggests any interpretation, an audiovisual one that rehashes long-familiar tropes and repackages overused devices for a commercial experiment that might as well wear its import as its title. When I was in Paris in 1983, Jerry Lewis—yes, they really did love him there—had a new movie in theaters. You're Crazy, Jerry."The Little Mermaid " could be retitled 'You're a Superhero, Dwayne'—it's the marketing team's PowerPoint presentation extended to feature length.
In addition to being Johnson's DC Universe debut, “The Little Mermaid” is also notable for marking the return of Henry Cavill's Superman. The cameo is likely to set up future showdowns between the two characters, but Hodge was completely unaware of it until he saw the film.
“They kept that all the way under wraps, and I didn't know until maybe a day or two before the premiere,” he recently said The Little Mermaid Wakanda Forever (2022) FULLMOVIE ONLINE

2023.05.30 08:02 cornfedbae Experience: Finished First Cycle on Annovera
I finished my first full 28 day cycle and am now on day 8 of the new one.
In summary: it's been the most functional hormonal birth control I've tried so far, and I've tried quite a few. I hope this doesn't jinx anything, but I thought more anecdotal experience on reddit might help someone. I read everything I could about Annovera before trying it, and I couldn't really find anyone else with my specific ailments and history.
For background, I'm 35, no major health issues, always been kind of thin and petite but athletic. Ever since puberty, I had very irregular and light periods. I used to count myself lucky because I only got maybe 3-4 painless periods a year until one day when I was 19, I bled uncontrollably and almost fainted. My doctor had me try a couple of different pills to hopefully regulate my cycle, but they all came with such bad side effects that I gave up. The next several years I just enjoyed my convenient but ticking time bomb of a uterus. I fainted a few times in public but shrugged it off.
When I was 27 I tried the Mirena IUD. It seemed perfect, and all my checkups were great. Unbeknownst to me, it affected me mentally. I developed terrible anxiety, depression, and anger issues, which were very out of character for me. I honestly didn't realize until it was time for me to remove it after 5 years. Luckily my body rejected the new one, and over the course of 2 weeks, I weaned off of the hormone and was back to my normal pre-Mirena self. It felt like waking up from a dream, and I could see and hear clearly again. My bf definitely noticed. I know IUDs are supposed to be localized with a very low dose of hormone, but I later tried again with the Skyla hoping the smaller size and dose would be ok, but all my issues came back. I later read a study where a very tiny percentage of healthy women developed negative mental issues from their hormonal IUDs so I guess I'm one of those in the tiny percentage who is very sensitive to that particular hormone.
I went hormone-free for about a year and a half. My period somehow became regular and predictable, but one day I blacked out again in a public bathroom so I started researching other options. I was intrigued by Annovera, but it was relatively new so I couldn't find quite as much info on it as others. It was quite expensive even with my insurance ($150) but the pharmacy applied a coupon and was able to give it to me for free. I hope I can still do this after my ring is finished.
Week 1: Within a day or 2, I felt the nausea. I never threw up, but it was just uncomfortable. I felt like I was carsick and desperately needing to burp. My stomach was a little bloated too. This lessened after 2-3 days, but I notice I gag a bit when brushing my teeth now. By Day 3 or 4, I noticed discharge. I had read on Reddit that some users got yeast infections so I was wary of that, but I don't think I had a yeast infection. It wasn't uncomfortable, itchy, or painful. It was just like a very watery blob that would drop every hour or two. Luckily I work from home so I could go to the bathroom to the clean myself up. It stopped after maybe 2-3 days. I also noticed that I had night sweats a few times. I'm usually get cold easily when I sleep so I have to pile on the blanket and snuggle close to my bf. Very odd.
Week 2: I got a bit of depression here. My bf and I got into an argument over a misunderstanding one day, and it sent me into a very sad spiral. I wasn't aggressively angry or losing my temper like when I was on Mirena. I was just convinced that we needed to end our relationship. For maybe 3 days I was just quietly sad and isolated myself. My bf also weirdly smelled bad to me. He kind of grossed me out. On the other hand, I became quite focused on my work and was doing some impressive things. I was also super focused on my side passion projects. My brain felt so sharp and motivated albeit emotionally sad.
Week 3: I was getting over the depression, and my bf didn't disgust me anymore. Still felt pretty sharp and focused mentally with work and problem solving. No brain fog. My breasts did start to feel sore and sensitive the way they normally would before my period came. This made sense since my ring-free week was coming up.
Week 4: Ring removal! My period took a few days to come. I was starting to get worried, but I think on the 4th day I finally got it. It only lasted 4 days and was slightly heavier than normal at the start and quickly lightened up. I felt pretty normal during this whole week.
Now I'm on Day 8 of my new cycle. Again I was nauseous the day I reinserted the ring. I also had the puddle of discharge again, but it wasn't as frequent. I haven't gotten the sadness again, and I really hope I don't. So far things have felt manageable. The one thing I can't quite tell is if the ring has impacted my sex drive. A few times I struggled to reach orgasm, but that's not unheard of in my life. It just took more work, but I got there. I'll need to collect more data before I make a conclusion. I think my boobs are also slightly bigger. Some users reported going up a full cup size, and I was honestly excited about that possibility (sad A cup here). That didn't exactly happen, but I think I'm just a full A now so I'll take it. No abnormal sensitivity or pain either. Oh and one thing I forgot to document was that my face broke out a bit. Not a scary amount, but I normally have very clear skin, and now I have a few blemishes. It cleared up on my ring-free week and then came back when I reinserted.
Overall I'm liking Annovera and hope it continues to mesh well with me. I hope the nausea goes away completely and my face clears up, but otherwise it's been a positive experience, especially compared to the other birth controls I've tried in the past. This was a long write, but I hope it helps anyone who has a similarly turbulent birth control journey like me.

2023.05.30 07:55 borninthesummer Do I really need to see an in-person doctor or should telehealth be enough?
I've been seeing an in-person doctor (this is my fourth week) and he wanted me to come in every week so I did. However, he's an hour drive from me (I got recommended this place from my mom's acquaintance and never would have started going there had I known he wanted me to come every week). He also wants to keep me at 1.2 even though I don't have side effects. I lost 1kg but regained it, so I feel like it's been a waste of Saxenda at this point.
The pharmacies/clinics around where I live sell Saxenda at an expensive price, but I can do telehealth and get it prescribed for cheaper.
Do you think it's necessary to do in-person appointments for Saxenda? I suppose not, since the doctor barely spoke to me for 2 minutes after the first week, but maybe it's different with other doctors?

2023.05.30 06:06 sunnyzeee Pharmacist tried to prevent me from getting Paxlovid
I got COVID for the first time just a few weeks ago. I am in my mid twenties with hyperPOTS and having COVID was the sickest I’ve ever been. Fortunately, I was able to get a prescription for Paxlovid.
My aunt went to pick it up at the pharmacy for me and almost couldn’t get it filled. The pharmacist apparently tried to dissuade my aunt from getting it, saying that it wasn’t “approved by the FDA” (which is I guess kind of true, but also extremely misleading since it’s authorized for emergency use).
Here’s the part that has me angry: the pharmacist told my aunt that I don’t need Paxlovid— that I’m too young to be needing it, and I should pretty much suck it up and fight it off without the Paxlovid. The pharmacist insisted that it was not that serious, and that I would be able to get better without it.
What’s crazy about this is how f***ing inconsiderate it is to assume that a person shouldn’t have access to this medication based solely on their age. And my aunt had to fight with this pharmacist for over an hour.
Anyway, that’s my rant. I’m just so tired of people being dismissive like this based only on my age.

2023.05.30 05:42 23blackjack23 CVS on Sunrise is now closed from 12:30 to 1pm and nightly at 8pm ... better local options?
The lunch break doesn't bother me as much as closing at 8pm. We're not in Iowa.
Other than the hours, their general level of service is pretty decent for a pharmacy ... but I'm certainly open to switching pharmacies if there's one who actually cares about being open convenient hours for their customers.
With my insurance, mail order pharmacies are sadly not an option.

2023.05.30 04:50 Jpoolman25 Are there online programs to learn and obtain license?
I’m in community college doing pre reqs for radiography program but I’m looking for a job. I don’t have much experience beside fast foods and retail store like customer service. I don’t have backup plan for my career path but I thought xray tech job will be good path to start then go into ct or mri tech. I thought about finding remote job or something in healthcare setting like hospital or clinics but they all require experience or some qualifications. I see many young people working as pharmacy techs in retail stores like Walmart publix Walgreens cvs. But I’m not sure how to become pharm tech or if I should look into different paths of work. I just feel stuck

2023.05.30 04:43 rxsangria Advice from a pharmacist on prior authorization process for Wegovy
tl:dr; An extensive post on prior authorizations, copays, coupons and getting Wegovy covered. Recommended reading if you haven't started the process yet, want to get Wegovy covered on your insurance, or if your prior auth request was rejected. I talk about copays, the prior auth process for first doses and for dose increases, and what kinds of things you might need to qualify to get Wegovy covered by your plan.
I want to preface this post by stating that I am a pharmacist, but not currently working as a pharmacist. I have loads of experience dealing with insurance companies and the prescription billing process. I worked in a retail pharmacy for 25 years. I have also worked for an insurance company as a pharmacist. I started Wegovy 3 weeks ago and I had to go through a 6 week process of cooperating with my doctor's office and the insurance company to get it covered, and I wanted to share the process I went through and some tips for anyone trying to get it covered for themselves.
I cannot promise that following what I have done will work for you, each plan does it's own thing and make their own decisions. I will not be discussing supply issues here, this is not the post for that.
I started with visiting the website and looking at what indications the med was for. Indications mean which medical conditions and symptoms has the drug been approved by the FDA to treat. According to the Wegovy website
Wegovy.com , " WEGOVY
® (semaglutide) injection 2.4 mg is an injectable prescription medicine that may help adults and children aged ≥12 years with obesity (BMI ≥30 for adults, BMI ≥ 95th percentile for age and sex for children), or some adults with excess weight (BMI ≥27) (overweight) who also have weight-related medical problems to help them lose weight and keep it off. Wegovy
® should be used with a reduced calorie meal plan and increased physical activity"
This information gave me clues as to what the insurance company is expecting for the basic qualifications in the prior authorization request:
- BMI 30 or above, or BMI 27 or above with weight related health issues
- Reduced calorie meal plan
- Increased physical activity
There are more qualifications that each insurance company will require to make sure that the medication is deemed appropriate for you. I had the basic qualifications, so I felt like I had a good chance of getting it covered. I did some more research. I googled "Wegovy Prior Authorization Criteria" and found some links for some common insurance plans. I didn't find mine, so I checked out a few of the ones listed to see what other kinds of criteria my insurance might want. This pdf was helpful and I thought was a good example:
Wegovy Caremark Criteria . This form gives their interpretation of what their specific conditions are for coverage, and if I met those, I felt I probably qualified under my own plan.
I talked with my doctor, she had done prior auths for Wegovy before so she knew a few of the things they wanted, so she took notes and had her assistant send in the prior authorization request with the following information:
- Has the patient tried a structured diet (keto, vegan, DASH, etc) in the last 12 months? yes, Keto and other low carb. stopped due to cholesterol levels
- Has the patient tried a behavioral weight loss plan (Weight watchers, Noom, etc) in the last 12 months? yes, Noom. It helped somewhat, but was too expensive for me.
- How much exercise does the patient participate in per week? Gym membership? Walking 3 times per week for 30 minutes, no gym membership
- What's the patient BMI? 36
- Does the patient have any obesity related health conditions such as obstructive sleep apnea, dyslipidemia (high cholesterol), hypertension (high blood pressure), or type 2 diabetes? yes. apnea, dyslipidemia, hypertension.
The initial request was sent in to the insurance. According to them, the initial request was missing information. My plan requires the remaining information to be submitted to them by the provider within 24 hours of the initial request in order to process the authorization. Since it was after 5pm, they said they were not able to contact the office, so they sent a fax request for more information. Of course my office doesn't look at faxes as soon as they come in, they are busy seeing patients!
The 24 hour deadline came and went, and I received a rejection letter in the mail from the insurance plan. I called them for more information on the letter, to find out what information was missing and what needed to be done.
Here are the questions I asked and their answers (THESE ANSWERS ARE SPECIFIC TO MY PLAN, YOURS WILL PROBABLY BE DIFFERENT):
- What information is missing from the original authorization request? A statement from the provider that the patient is not pregnant and patient has no contraindications to using the medication. (A contraindication is any reason why a person should not use the med, like having thyroid cancer or being allergic to the active ingredients)
- How can the provider submit that missing information to you? An appeal needs to be filed. The provider needs to send a letter or another prior authorization request to us that includes the missing information.
- Can I start the appeal process myself? You can start the appeal process, but we will still need information from the provider.
- Does the form need to be faxed to you or sent to you online? The provider can submit either by fax or via an online prior authorization service. Either way works for us.
- If my office faxes you, is there a specific form that they need to use? No, just their own standard office prior authorization form works.
- Is there any other information or requirements that the original prior authorization request missed? No, just those 2 items.
- How long does the authorization process take? After the appeal is received by our office, we have 28 days to review and give a determination.
- How will I know if it has been approved? Do you contact me or the pharmacy? We will contact your doctor's office first, and you will receive a letter in the mail with the determination. You may also call us back anytime over the next couple of weeks to check the status. It will be given a due date, and we can let you know what date has been assigned once we have received the appeal.
Satisfied that I had gotten all of the answers I needed, I emailed the medical assistant at the office and requested that they send the additional information to my insurance and start the appeal.
I emailed the questions and answers that I received during my phone call to give her all the information she might need to get the request submitted properly. I was SUPER NICE AND PATIENT with her, as I know she has loads to do and might not be able to get to it right away. I told her in the email that I appreciated all the time and effort she was giving to help me get this covered.
After a couple of days, I received an email from the assistant with a notification that the insurance company wanted me to sign a release form to allow the assistant to 'vouch' for me for the appeal.
The rest was just waiting and checking back with the insurance plan about once a week. It was approved after about 3 weeks of checking back.
SUCCESS! The approval was for the first strength, Wegovy 0.25mg weekly. The whole process was about 6 weeks because I didn't want to bug my medical assistant more than once a week.
Now the question is:
do I need another prior authorization for a new dose? I called the insurance company again. Questions and answers (again, these are SPECIFIC TO MY PLAN) :
- Do I need another prior authorization to go to the next dose for Wegovy? Yes. But the process is a little easier for the dose increases.
- What is that process? Do they have to send all the original information again for the new dose? The provider submits a generic prior authorization request, but this time, the only real notes that need to be included are a statement to the effect of "Dosage increased per FDA recommendation".
- I am expecting to have several dose increases. Does each prior auth have to be done separately, or can the provider request all the doses at once? First, I need to tell you that prior authorizations can be requested up to 30 days before the prescription is filled. Because of that, the provider can only request 2 doses at a time. If they use an online form, they would need to send the dose requests separately. If they fax us, they can just write in the comments or cover letter "Wegovy 0.5mg AND Wegovy 1mg".
My plan is to send these questions and answers to my medical assistant again, a few days before my next appointment, with a reminder to her that I will be asking my provider to increase to the next dosage, Wegovy 0.5mg, and expect to increase to the next strength 28 days after, and ask SUPER NICELY if she would please send that prior authorization request for the next 2 doses after my upcoming appointment so there's not a big delay in being able to received my next dose.
TIPS:
- Figure all this out ahead of time so you aren't disappointed and/or waste a trip to the doctor or waste everyone's time if you don't meet the qualifications for your insurance plan. There are so many people involved in getting you this med, that if in the end you don't end up getting it, it's a huge waste of time and resources. Just think of all the people involved: the scheduler for the appointment, the med assistant, the provider, the person submitting the prior authorization request at the office, the pharmacy technician, the pharmacist, the prior authorization people at the insurance company, etc.
- You can contact your insurance plan before you even talk to your doctor. Ask to speak to a pharmacy services representative, and if they are not able to answer your questions, ask to speak to a representative in the pharmacy prior authorization department. Ask all the questions listed above, write all the answers down and take them to your doctor if you qualify.
- Make an agenda before your appointment. Write down all the answers to the qualification questions that you discovered by contacting your insurance company, and hand it to your assistant at the beginning of the appointment, so it's easy for your provider (or scribe) to just throw it in your office note at the appointment.
- Pretend like your medical assistant or prior authorization specialist at your provider's office has no clue. What I mean is that they know how to submit the authorization, but there are so many insurance plans that there is no possible way for them to know each plans process and requirements for the authorization submission for each medication. A lot of times it's a trial and error thing. Send it and see if it 'sticks', if not, change it up and send it again. It's a heck of a lot easier on them (and more efficient for you) if you give them the requirements that you learned by calling your insurance ahead of time.
- While you wait for a determination, calling and asking your pharmacist "is it covered yet" is NOT helpful and it actually costs the pharmacy money! Each time a claim is submitted or attempted - sent to your insurance plan through the computer, there is a charge for the transmission. It's best to keep in contact with your insurance plan and call them daily or weekly, or visit your plan's online portal to see if they have updated the authorization. They also get cranky when you keep calling - they are busy as heck!
- Sometimes even after the prior authorization has been approved, it might still reject at the pharmacy. When claims are processed through that have dollar amounts higher than $1000, they often will get 'stuck' at the processor. I believe it's a code 78 rejection. The pharmacy technician will need to contact the help desk to get this resolved (phone number should be provided in the claim rejection information).
- Be patient.
COPAYS
Quick note on copays.
When you contact your insurance plan about the requirements for coverage, ask at that time what YOUR copay for the med will be, once it's approved. A lot of things determine what that amount will be. Do you have a high deductible plan? If so, even though it's "covered" it could just apply to your deductible and you will still see a very high dollar amount at the pharmacy.
If you don't find that out ahead of time you could go through this entire process only to find out at the pharmacy that it's still $1200 a month because of a deductible or it's a certain 'tier'. How frustrating!! and then you will probably get mad at the pharmacy because you went through all that trouble and it's still too much. (It's not their fault!)
Do you have a coupon? Do you qualify? The
Wegovy website has a coupon or payment assistance plan that you can sign up for that can take a certain dollar amount off your copay.
READ THE FINE PRINT! If you have an insurance plan that is funded by the government such as Medicaid, Medicare or Tricare, you are not allowed (by law) to use a coupon if it's billed to that plan. They also can rescind or modify the offer at any time, so if it doesn't work for you don't @ me.
Good luck!
Also - vote for people that will fight for a better healthcare system in the US because this whole process is just UGH

2023.05.30 03:14 exporius Insurance doesn’t cover life saving trintellix, how do I conserve?
Hello all. Tricare does not cover trintellix and I was given 20mg every day for 3 weeks inside inpatient.
They sent me out without any, and I didn’t take any for 5 days and I started getting withdrawal symptoms by then.
Muscle soreness, severe irritability, zero motivation, and emptiness. Felt like self harming, but didn’t. It was close though.
My parents just bought 14 pills of 20mg for $205 … they’re my hero’s. My saving grace.
This cannot be regular, we don’t have enough money to keep doing this for much longer.
Can I take one every 3 days to conserve what I have? Or every other day?
I know the half life is 66 hours, so, I’m banking on that… how do I conserve? I don’t want my family to keep shelling out so much money for this.
I have the savings card, but it won’t work because tricare insurance doesn’t cover it.
I talked to the pharmacist at CVS , they said they won’t apply the savings card. So mum and dad had to spend $205 for 14 fucking life saving pills.
Seriously. This is the best antidepressant I’ve ever been on. Feels like cloud 9.
What should I do about this?
Psychiatrist is in the process of trying to get a prior authorization, btw.

2023.05.30 03:02 Real_Yam5723 Thinking about quitting but I’m in a tough situation
Hello all. If you take the time to read all this, thanks so much.
So basically I’m a pharm tech @ Walgreens. I used to be a CSA, but I was forced to become a pharmacy worker if I wanted to keep my job when my store converted to a small format store. I’m also a FT college student. Anyway, I was never properly trained in pharmacy (as is the case with most retail pharmacies from what I’m gathering). I feel incompetent & the customers are awful (as we all know)., I work with one pharmacist in particular who gives me so much anxiety. When it’s not this pharmacist in particular, I’m really not too nervous about work.
This one in particular is very much a know it all & Im just simply not comfortable working with him. None of us really like to work with him. It’s obvious that he thinks he’s better than all of the techs & is very sarcastic with us. He often will not do things (there’s times where he won’t check a prescription for a waiter for a while, or something along those lines) out of spite just because he can, which leads to the customer becoming angry with you. He just does things that are unnecessary and it makes our jobs harder. He’s bragged before about the amount of money he makes, knowing we’re all struggling. Just not a pleasant person.
Our store is not in a good position. Including myself, we have 5 techs (including RXOM). On the weekends, we’re going to start having only one pharmacist and one tech both days. I’m just not comfortable with that. Our RXOM is having some health issues right now and is going to be out for the next few weeks, putting us at 4 techs.
I have so much anxiety because of this job. I’ve never been so anxious. I can’t even enjoy my days off because Im dreading work. I have bad dreams at night. I literally have tears in my eyes while getting ready in the morning. I am only part time & I was asked by my manager if I was okay with being scheduled for more hours when I wasn’t in school (which I am) but I have 39 hrs next week, which is more than I expected. I typically work a 9-10 hr shift with only a 30 min lunch & no 15’s whatsoever. It’s just not a good situation.
I would feel so horrible for quitting at a time like this because I do love my coworkers and this would leave them all in a bad position. Plus, I know how much my manager that is out right now depends on me & she would be so stressed if I quit, but it is so much to handle. Like I said, if it wasn’t for this one pharmacist in particular, I maybe wouldn’t care as much, but his arrogance & overall disrespect makes him unbearable to work with at times. I just feel stuck. I want a new job so bad and have been applying at other places but I don’t know how to leave I guess ? Any advice is appreciated.
