Firsthand Observations of the Revival Scene that birthed Mormonism; Ohio 1831
Growing up I often heard that the Mormons "came out of the Burned over District" of upstate NY. The area 'burned over' by religious revivals. I didn't hear much about how those revivals shaped the culture of the new formed sect then and now. The revivals of that period were criticized by some observers for the new methods used by the preachers to whip up and manipulate the emotions of the crowd. New means of playing on anxieties of those gathered "in the spirit" at a time considered the latter days, a decade before Christ would come back. I don't know, but I would bet that fast & testimony meeting is rooted in the revival culture of the 1820/30s.
These two passages are from a much longer article on the revivals of that time written by Orestes Brownson. (Brownson is an interesting guy, and tracked a path similar to Joseph Smith. It is interesting to compare their two paths that start from the same small VT village, early 1800s). Brownson was a religious seeker, a liberal, an intellect, and he saw all kinds of bad things going on with revivals. He detailed the skillful ways in which a preacher worked the crowd to guilt and shame and distress, in order to convert them through manipulation of their agitated emotions. He was critical of those high pressure techniques, as well as the missionary activities of converts who went door to door to argue with you about your eternal salvation. Brownson warned that the behavior of the religious fanatics was a risk to a young democracy. The religious fanatics, he said, couldn't live next to people who didn't think like they did.
This first passage describes the damage the religious fanatics/cults often had on families and personal relationships. 140 yrs after this article was printed, I witnessed firsthand how my converted siblings accused our dad, when he delayed his baptism, of being under the influence of the devil. Brownson, like other religious leaders of that time, warned that revivals-with their emotion-based (fast & shallow) conversion experiences- would ultimately damage christianity (as converts fell away, lost their testimonies and became cynical of it all).
This second passage is interesting in how Brownson saw the revivals as part of a dumbing down of the populous, while at the same time bringing closer a merger of government and religion.

What is a Solar PV Tracker?

A solar tracker is a device that positions a reflector, PV panel (photovoltaic panel)/solar panel, or a solar collector at an optimal angle relative to the sun to receive most of the solar radiation. For example, keeping the solar panel perpendicular to the sun results in more sunlight striking the solar panel, reflecting less light, and absorbing more energy.
Unlike any other single balance-of-system (BOS) component, a solar tracker enhances a PV system’s performance through the constant orientation of the PV panels toward the sun throughout the day.
A stepper motor (a type of DC motor) is usually used to position the solar panel so it can receive maximum sunlight. As the stepper motor is energy efficient with high tracking accuracy, it is used for precise automatic sun tracking with greater solar energy utilization. Moreover, a stepper motor is inexpensive in contrast to a servo motor.
It is estimated that solar tracking increases power output by about 30% to 40%. However, a computer-based algorithm solar tracker needs additional maintenance and is more expensive than a static/fixed solar panel.
Major sun/solar tracking systems are:
Manual solar tracker: Using a manual tracker is only sometimes practical as it requires someone to constantly monitor the sun and physically change the position of the solar panel system.
Active solar tracker: Active trackers use motors or hydraulic cylinders to move the PV panels, so they face the sun. Although active trackers are more convenient to use than manual trackers, a motor’s moving parts could break easily and lead to higher maintenance costs over the system’s lifetime.
Based on the direction of the movement, solar trackers are categorized into:
Single-axis solar tracker: Single-axis trackers are usually used in utility-scale projects, with tracking available on a horizontal/vertical axis. The tracker follows the sun’s position as it moves from east to west. A single-axis solar tracker can increase production from 25% to 35%.
📷
Dual-axis solar tracker: A dual-axis tracker or two-axis tracker not only moves from east to west but also from north to south to track the sun. Such trackers are commonly used for residential and small commercial solar projects with limited space and produce enough power to meet required energy needs.
📷
Passive tracker: Passive solar trackers or passive trackers use a liquid with a low boiling point that evaporates on exposure to solar radiation. Evaporation of the liquid causes the tilt system to become imbalanced, making the panels tilt toward the direction of the sun’s rays.

The BoM Launched; some Early Responses, 1830-1831
How did the rollout of the restored one true church go in the press? Here are a few early reactions. The BoM went to press in Aug. 1829 and was published in March 1830. The first two posts are from VT, four months after publication. Many newspapers ignored the story and later explained that they thought the story/claims were ridiculous and not worth putting in their newspaper-that for sure, it would fade away. By that time, they would explain, there were now hundreds, or thousands of Mormons and..... who could have believed there were going to be so many people falling for that? It is a common theme in the early press coverage of the new movement...we just didn't think it could possibly survive. Another common theme to notice in the early reports are the rock in the hat to create the BoM.
Sentinel and Democrat (Burlington, Vermont) · 4 Jun 1830, Fri · Page 2 ..face in hat, white stone in hat, from which he reads while someone transcribes.
This one is particularly great in that it is from Poultney, VT...where Ethan Smith lived and worked when he published View of the Hebrews, where the Cowdery family went to church. Here we see that the news of the restored one true church prompted this editor to cover the story as a PSA--to warn those in the public who had not yet heard about the scam where the smooth-talking sales guys are coming to sell you a lifetime blacktop sealant for your driveway. "We understand it has found its way into this region"...says the editor from the land of proto-Mormonism.
Northern Spectator, Poultney, VT June 2, 1830 p.3
A different version of events, written from Ohio, the first Zion.
Huron Reflector (Norwalk, Ohio) · 16 May 1831, Mon · Page 1
Early reports of the Mormons in Ohio described spiritual events and "displays of Deity", including the story of young men who received written messages from heaven...floated down, were written in gold, ornate "Italian" script--that faded away. A few months later, the story of Warner Doty came out. Doty was 29, and a devout, true believer in Joseph Smith. Doty believed it when Joseph Smith said he could heal, so when Doty became ill he refused to see a doctor, and instead asked for Joseph Smith to heal him. Joseph Smith got the message but didn't go to the house, later explaining that god directed him away so as not to do a healing for show. But "the Prophet" visited Doty over the next two days and discouraged him from seeing a doctor. Doty died, and in his pocket they found the following message (from heaven). That poor guy scammed and dying because of it.

Waiting for a Miracle: early observation that the Mormon claims don't match reality (1831)
From an article that appeared in the Huron Reflector of Norwalk, Ohio 11/28/1831. What TBM hasn't heard about the spiritual events and miracles that occurred in the ecstatic early days at Kirtland? Yet, the newspapers from that area in that time reported that though the Mormons made big claims to great powers, there had actually been no miracles performed, no healings had taken place--and in fact people had died due to believing they would be healed by the power of the Mormons. Using the same skills from the treasure digging con, Joseph Smith blamed members for their lack of faith, while also promising them that the best was yet to come, just ahead over the horizon, ....in Ohio, in Missouri, etc.....this promise of the treasure just ahead could never work today, right?

Mucci Farms in Huron Ohio has been turning the night sky orange for the past 2 months, everyone hates it but apparently we're stuck with it for now. I believe the farm is in Huron Township, across the street from the "city" itself. Any advice to a small town seeking basic decency from a stonewalling multinational?
There are a few articles on the controversy in the Sandusky Register and Norwalk Reflector. Below are links to 1/9/2019 article "No quick fix to shut off Mucci's lights"
