Dear Friends: As we came into this New Year, WHEEL/Women in Black received updated 2022 presumed-homeless/temporarily housed death data from our partners at the King County Medical Examiners Office. The new data was every bit as horrible as expected. Including names we’d already known from a mid-December update for our annual Solstice Vigil, we will be standing vigil for THIRTY-THREE people at noon on Wednesday, January 11th on the steps of Seattle City Hall (4th/James). TWENTY-NINE of these deaths occurred in December alone, and our hearts are just so very broken: ELEVEN of the December deaths involved hypothermia/cold exposure as primary/secondary cause of death or “other significant condition.” MORE SHELTER AND ALL-WINTER WEATHER SHELTERS ARE DESPERATELY NEEDED. Our January 11th vigil will honor and remember: *Unidentified person, remains found on Mountains to Sound trail on 10/10; cause of death undetermined *Khadijah Jones, 28, died of CO poisoning in alley/campsite at Colorado S/S. This vigil is dedicated to the memory of Keisha Ransom, beloved of REACH, who died recently. There’ll be at least one more update to 2022 data, but we know already there was a terrifying increase in the number of our homeless sisters and brothers who died outside/in public/by violence last year: At least 286 homeless/temporarily housed people including children.
