2023.01.25 03:38 thelaw19 The Kuzmenko dilemma and trade.

Okay looking at Kuzmenko's time in Vancouver we have 2 things to discuss.

First and foremost we should be discussing whether or not the Canucks should be trying to re-sign Kuzmenko. The unfortunate reality is that despite Kuzmenko's success in Vancouver the best option is for the Canucks to move on from him. Why? For starters we should be looking to monetize any and all assets not nailed down, Kuzmenko is probably our second best asset behind Bo Horvat (see my breakdown on a Horvat trade here) as Kuzmenko has been near a point a game while on a 950K cap hit contract. If Kuzmenko is traded that also opens up a slot on Pettersson's wing and on PP1 to rehabilitate the value of either Boeser or Garland to potentially trade them in the offseason. Lastly we have to look at the cap make up of this team, Next year the wingers account for 34.55m and d accounts for 29.86m. How are you going to have any chance at being competitive if you are building from the wings by adding 6m to that already overpaid wing core with a d-core that needs to be rebuilt and is 30m? You can't and we have to be looking at ways to get deeper down the middle by redistributing money away from the wings towards the centre position, not by adding more money and term to the wings.

Before we go further the team should politely ask Kuzmenko what are a few spots he would like to be traded to and see if they can make it work. No promises but trying to make it work should help in gaining free agents like him in the future.

Okay so now that is out of the way let's take a look at other top 6 wingers traded as UFA's and what they went for.
2018-2019
Mark Stone 7.35m 59gp 28g 34a 1.05p/g 1.05 from Ottawa to Vegas for Erik Brannstrom (D), Oscar Lindberg (F), 2020 second-round pick (DAL)

Mikael Granlund 5.75m 63gp 15g 34a 0.78p/g from Nashville to Minisota for Kevin Fiala

Gustav Nyquist 4.75m 62gp 16g 33a 0.79p/g from Detroit to San Jose for 2019 second-round pick, 2020 third-round pick (was conditionally a 2nd if Nyquist had re-signed in SJ)
2019-20
Tyler Toffoli 4.6m 58gp 18g 16a 0.58p/g from LA to Vancouver for Tim Schaller Tyler Madden 2nd-round pick in 2020
Andreas Athanasiou 3m 46gp 10g 14a 0.52p/g from Detroit to Edmonton for 2nd-round pick in 2020 2nd-round pick in 2021
2020-2021
Anthony Mantha 3.3m 42gp 11g 10a 0.50p/g from Detroit to Washington for Richard Panik (F), Jakub Vrana (F), 2021 first-round pick, 2022 second-round pick

Nick Foligno 5.5m 42gp 7g 9a 0.50p/g from Columbus to Toronto for 2021 first-round pick, 2022 fourth-round pick, retain 50 percent of Foligno's contract

Kuzmenko is 45gp 19g 22a 0.91p/g with a contract of $950,000So he will be in the upper stratosphere of trades, a first or a high prospect or multiple 2nds.

Who should be looking at adding Kuzmenko? Well there are two types of teams that should be looking to add our highly skilled winger. The first is obviously teams that think they are one high end piece away and the second is teams that are capped out as making room for 950K is easier than say 5m. There is of course overlap between the two categories.
I went over every playoff hopeful's cap and asset situation in my Horvat post so I am just going to go over the potential landing spots for Kuzmenko here.

How I broke things down.
TDL Cap space was directly from CapFriendly
For assets I pulled picks off cap friendly and prospects I pulled of a combination of Scott Wheeler's prospect rankings (only have rank 32-17 for Scott but they are brand new rankings) and Corey Pronman's but they are a little older from August.
Needs: I did my best to asses which teams could use a high scoring winger and why
The Trade/OR the actual trade I think might work.
Why: What the Canucks get out of the trade and why we should target said asset.

Vegas
TDL cap space- 2.135m
Assets- 3 firsts 2 seconds and 4 thirds over the next three years. Lukas Cormier, LHD, 20. Zach Dean, C, 20. Matyas Sapovaliv, C, 18.
Need- Well they are deep on D, deep down the middle and Stone is out for a few weeks. Adding Kuzmenko would fill this gap and then allow them to slot Stephenson back at C to make them even deeper down the middle. Don't want to do that? Why not put Kuzmenko on the other side of the ice from Kessel and give them soft matchup minutes. Long and short of it Kuzmenko could make the Golden Knights even scarier.
The Trade: Kuzmenko for Vegas' 2023 1st.
Why: Well Vegas doesn't have a deep prospect pipeline (they have some B prospects but nothing you would value over a 1st) and they don't have a second this year let alone multiple I would want for Kuzy. Their 1st should be a late one so they probably are not too attached to it.
Edmonton
TDL cap space-0.317m
Assets-3 firsts 2 seconds and 2 thirds over the next three years. Dylan Holloway, C, 21. Xavier Bourgault, RW, 20. Philip Broberg, LHD, 21. Reid Schaefer, LW, 19.
Need- I am personally confused at how the oilers view things internally, but Kuzmenko would be an upgrade on Janmark and Kostin. They already pushed hard to get him in the offseason and he would be an upgrade on the second unit power play.
The Trade: Kuzmenko for Dylan Holloway
Why: Well the Oilers are so Cap strapped that they have to make some sort of roster move to add anyone even at 50% retained. Holloway is playing on the 4th line but has middle 6 potential. That does not do Edmonton much good with McDavid, Dri and Nuge as well as Ryan McLeod emerging as a good option as well, so adding a top 6 winger on a bargain contract is just the price of doing business. For the Canucks they add a prospect who is playing in the NHL with middle 6 C upside.
Calgary
TDL cap space- 4.026m
Assets-3 firsts 3 seconds and 2 thirds over the next three years. Jakob Pelletier, LW, 21. Connor Zary, C, 20. Matthew Coronato, RW, 20.
Need- Well they are currently playing Milan Lucic on the second line and it's not like any of their players have been lighting the lamp. Kuzmenko would be tied for 1st in goals and 2nd for points on this Flames team. If Brad Treliving is feeling the heat this is a good add for a team that is deep at C and should be better at D than they are playing so if you are making a push adding Kuzmenko adds offence, he cold slot in on their PP1 and it denys Edmont a possible add while they are at it.
The Trade: Kuzmenko for Calgary's 2023 1st.
Why: Similar to Vegas I am not in love with their prospect system and their 1st may end up as a pick in the teens if Calgary can't make a competitive playoff scene.

Dallas
TDL cap space-2.779
Assets-2 firsts 3 seconds and 2 thirds over the next three years. Thomas Harley, LHD, 20. Logan Stankoven, C, 19. Mavrik Bourque, C, 20. Lian Bichsel, LHD, 18.
Need: Last year Dallas was a 1 line wonder, this year they have made a good attempt to spread some of the scoring around. Or is it just that they have their 4 powerplay 1 forwards on 3 lines? Great question but either way adding Kuzmenko to either with Hintz or Benn would help with spreading their scoring out over multiple lines.
The Trade: Kuzmenko for Logan Stankoven or Mavrik Bourque.
Why: Why add a potential great C prospect? Because you can never have enough centre depth and this club has none.
New Jersey
TDL cap space-1.253m
Assets-3 firsts 3 seconds and 2 thirds over the next three years. Luke Hughes, LHD, 19. Simon Nemec, RHD, 18. Dawson Mercer, RW, 21. Alexander Holtz, RW, 21.
Need: Kuzmenko would be 3rd in goals and 4th in points on the Devils, he could easily be penciled in on Hughes' wing and PP1. New jersey has a very deep prospect system so they will not be too hard pressed to part with prospects or picks.
The Trade: Kuzmenko for New Jersey's 2023 1st.
Why: While I would love to add Luke Hughes they won't do that especially to the team with Quinn. I would also expect Simon Nemec to be off the table. The problem with the rest of the Devils prospect system is much like the Canucks it is deep at the wings. Yes, in this deep draft I want any 1st rounder I can get my hands on.
NYR
TDL cap space-5.281m
Assets-4 firsts 2 seconds and 2 thirds over the next three years. Brennan Othmann, LW, 20. Zac Jones, LHD, 22. Adam Sykora, LW, 18. Brett Berard, LW, 20.
Need: Kuzmenko would be 3rd on the team in both goals and points. He could also be a fit on PP1 if you wanted to but for sure would fit on PP2.
The Trade: Kuzmenko for Bryce McConnell-Barker and Vitali Kravtsov
OR: Kuzmenko for a conditional 1st (the better of the Rangers and Stars)
OR: Kuzmenko for Alexis Lafrenière
Why: What!? Three trade proposals? He can't do that, shoot him or something! Okay so the first one first. McConnell-Barker is the Rangers best centre prospect, has NHL size speed and skill as well as being his junior team's captain. Kravtsov on the other hand has been controversial as he clearly has talent but also has not lived up to potential, Vancouver has recently put some stock into young Russian players and perhaps a change of scenery will do him well. The trade for the better of the 1st round picks seems fair to me as both of those picks have the potential to be 24th or later. And the last one. Why would the Rangers trade Laf? Well I think that it is pretty clear that the rags have been terrible at developing their prospects. Trading their struggling prospect for a polished and finished product makes their team better and I don't think they will ever get as much out of Laf as they can get for him in a trade.
Washington
TDL cap space-4.212m
Assets-3 firsts 2 seconds and 2 thirds over the next three years. Ivan Miroshnichenko, LW, 18. Connor McMichael, C/W, 22. Hendrix Lapierre, C, 20. Ryan Chesley, RHD, 18.
Need: Speaking of Russian's, Kuzmenko would be second in goals and points behind Ovi. It's a big year for the Caps, they have so much roster turnover next year and they have a team that is scoring right in the middle of the league. Kuzy could become the second best winger on the caps and at the very least add some scoring.
The Trade: Kuzmenko for an unprotected 2024 1st.
OR: Kuzmenko for Connor McMichael
Why: Well so far I have been preaching going for 2023 1st's so why a 2024? Well we know so little about the shape of the Caps roster for 2024 except the fact they only have 6 forwards and 1 defenseman signed for it. And it is the most expensive Dman and 6 forwards. They will have about 25 million to pay the remaining 14 players. It is not expected to be a deep free agent defence class so the 2023-2024 capitals might be a high scoring dumpster fire. So why not take a swing and bet that they miss the playoffs by a decent margin and have a better pick next year. I would prefer this gamble on upside to McMichael but I still like him.
Pittsburgh
TDL cap space- 0.059m
Assets-3 firsts 3 seconds and 3 thirds over the next three years. Owen Pickering, LHD, 18. Ty Smith, LHD, 22. Filip Hallander, C/LW, 22.
Need: Oh boy great question. Kuzmenko would be 3rd in goals and 4th in points on the Pens and the team in 19th in goals scored, and are in a pretty tight wildcard race. They have an aging core and haven't won a playoff round since 2018 (how is that 5 years ago already).
The Trade: Kuzmenko for 2023 1st, Danton Heinen to make the cap work, and a 2023 2nd for taking Heinen.
Why:Prospect pipeline is thin in general but especially at RHD and C. You could also take the Washington gamble but I think Pittsburg has longer staying potential.
NYI
TDL cap space-6.797m
Assets-3 firsts 3 seconds and 3 thirds over the next three years. Aatu Raty, C, 20. William Dufour, RW, 20. Calle Odelius, LHD, 18. amuel Bolduc, LHD, 22.
Need: Well there's fire Lou chants going and they currently have Casey Cizikas playing on the top line. Kuzmenko would be 1st in goals and 3rd in points but 1st in points per game. Kuzmenko could definitely play PP1 on the Islanders as well.
The Trade: Kuzmenko for an unprotected 2024 1st.
Why: Let's make the they will fall apart next year bet. They dont have alot of wiggle room, need to give raises to Mayfield and Wahlstrom so they probably are not going to be better next year and quite frankly might be far worse.
Boston
TDL cap space-2.325m
Assets-3 firsts 1 seconds and 3 thirds over the next three years. Fabian Lysell, RW, 19. Mason Lohrei, LHD, 21. Matthew Poitras, C, 18.
Need: An all in move for a juggernaut team, Kuzmenko would be 2nd in and but 3rd in points on the bruins. Adding Kuzmenko would make for a nice fill in for Debrusk while he is out to slot him on the top line and when Debrusk comes back Kuzmenko could be positioned to make a stellar 3rd line with Hall and Coyle.
The Trade: Kuzmenko for Boston's unprotected 2024 1st.
Why: Make the gamble, father time comes for all, the bruins are already eating into next year's cap by 4.5m with Bergeron and Krejci's bonuses and they are going to have to give Pasta a big raise. Bet on this team winning the cup and watching its top 2 centres walk into the sunset.
Toronto
TDL cap space-1.135m
Assets-3 firsts 1 seconds and 3 thirds over the next three years. Matthew Knies, LW, 19. Nicholas Robertson, LW, 20. Topi Niemelä, RHD, 20. Fraser Minten, C, 18.
Need: I said this in my Horvat write up but the leafs biggest need should be finding one more top 6 player. Kuzmenko would be a major upgrade on Järnkrok and he would be 4th in goals and 5th in points on the team. Oh and they are pretty much locked into a first round match up with Tampa and anyone they acquire can't be picked up by the lightning.
The Trade: Kuzmenko for 2023 1st
OR: Kuzmenko for Fraser Minten
OR: Kuzmenko for Topi Niemelä
Why: Either a pick or either of their best C or RHD prospects will do for me.
Tampa Bay
TDL cap space-0.719m
Assets-1 firsts 2 seconds and 3 thirds over the next three years. Isaac Howard, LW, 18. Dylan Duke, LW, 19. Jack Thompson, RHD, 20.
Need:While they don't necessarily have a need they always seem to be adding at the deadline. They are pretty much locked in a first round matchup with the leafs and can take any and all upgrades available especially when it denies Toronto an upgrade as well. He would be 3rd in goals and 2nd in points on the lightning, he would definitely help PP2.
The Trade:Kuzmenko for Jack Finley, Jack Thompson and Cal Foote
Why: They don't have a 1st in 2023 or 2024, their prospect system is near the bottom of the league. They play here is that one of the three hit higher than potential or all of the three become middle to bottom of the roster players. Foote probably has the best potential to be a top 4 dman with the Jacks needing to work on skating to be difference makers.
Buffalo
TDL cap space: 80,455m
Assets: 3 firsts 5 seconds and 2 thirds over the next three years. Matthew Savoie, C/RW, 18. Jiri Kulich, C/LW, 18. Noah Ostlund, C, 18. Ryan Johnson, LHD, 20.
Need: Hey why am I doing more work and adding a new team. These pesky sabers are making an honest run for it and are sitting in 9th place 3 points out of a playoff spot. They have a deep prospect system, a lot of young players and maybe they decide now is time that playing meaningful games in march is worth more than some of their lesser prospects or picks. Wait, how do they have 80 mill in cap space at the tdl? Well maybe because they have 20 mill in total caps space and have been tolling daily cap space. Kuzy would be tied for 4th in goals and 5th in points. He would also be a good fit on either Sabers powerplay.
The Trade: Kuzmenko for Matthew Savoie
OR: Kuzmenko for Jiri Kulich
OR: Kuzmenko for 2023 1stOR: Buffalo's 2023 2nd and Philadelphia's 2023 2nd
Why: Savoie was the 9th pick last year so Buffalo might be hesitant to trade him but would be a great pick up for Vancouver. Kulich was the 28th pick last year so they may be more likely to move him. Their 1st may be a playoff pick but it also might not. And finally the situation I've been looking for. A team with 2 seconds in the mix. Philly's 2nd should be in the 30's and Buffalos will probably be in the 40's. I like that prospect a lot

Well I think that is all I have to say on Kuzmenko, I will have another one of these write ups coming tomorrow (hopefully) on Shenn and then maybe I will tie a few random trades I have thought of in there too!

/hockey stands with BIPOC, AAPI, and LGBTIQA+

/hockey aims to be an inclusive environment where people of all races, ethnicity, and how people identify can come and talk hockey. We will do our best to lift the voices of the hockey community that speak up against racism, sexism, or any other hate by ensuring their posts make it to /hockey for those to read. We will continue to do our best effort to enforce and remove any comments or racist remarks as well as all bigotry, sexism, and xenophobia.
What is a Daily Free Talk Thread? Use it to talk about anything related to hockey, ask quick questions, or any other daily chatter. It's also your hub for links to Game Day Threads, live scores, daily stats and standings, and a way to compile recent news and announcements for easy viewing. You can view a collection of all video replays by opening the stickied mod comment below. It updates throughout the night.
If you have specific feedback about these threads please message the mods. Bot is maintained by sandman730. Message him with any bugs.

Some useful resources
