2023.05.31 22:41 Visible_Wolverine_15 MD & DO School List Help

hi everyone! i just got my MCAT score back today and need help with my school list. i'm also debating whether or not I should apply this cycle or retake the MCAT. here are my stats:
GA resident. Asian F. GPA: 4.0. MCAT: 512 (scored lower than 519 FL avg) :/
- Research: 1500+ hours (worked in 2 separate labs, 1 publication, 3 poster presentations, ongoing project with upcoming senior thesis)
- Clinical: 300+ hours (MA over the summer at primary care office in my hometown, volunteering in hospitals and specialist offices in college town)
- Shadowing: 200+ hours with family med, OB-GYN, dermatologist NP, neurologist, and vascular surgeon
- Community service and leadership: 700+ hours (most of my hours are for a leadership position in a service org, the rest is with volunteering with the homeless population and mentoring/tutoring elementary and middle school students in my college town)
- TA: completed 200 hours as a peer mentor for Honor college students & anticipated 200 hours TA for intro to Biochem class
- Award/Honors: Phi Beta Kappa, President's Gold Volunteer Service award, undergrad research scholarship from university
Family ties to CA, TX, NY, VA, MA, and FL. Prefer to stay in-state or in the Southern US close to family or to any of the states listed previously :) I'm interested in OB-GYN, surgery, or primary care so I want to keep my options open. This is a very rough school list, and I'd like to narrow it down to feasible 20-30 schools!
MD: Emory, MCG/Augusta, Mercer, Morehouse, South Alabama, UAB, MUSC, USC (South Carolina - Columbia or Greenville), UNC, Wake Forest, FIU, FAU, UMiami, Nova Southeastern MD, UCF, UF, USF, Eastern Virginia, VCU, Virginia Tech, Albany, Albert Einstein, New York Medical College, Rochester, Kaiser, Loma Lima, UCSD, UCLA, UCSF, Tufts, Rosalind Franklin, Loyola Stritch, Rush, George Washington, Georgetown, Howard, Dartmouth, Tulane
Reaches: Stanford, Johns Hopkins, Mt. Sinai, Harvard
DO: PCOM (GA campus), VCOM, LECOM, Nova Southeastern DO
Thank you so much, everyone!

2023.05.31 04:56 Burdwatcher In honor of Oakland fans, here is a list of all the failed MLB relocations I know of

This is not a comprehensive list, but it's as close as I could get to one from research and memory, and it includes quite a bit of Bay Area shenanigans. The Superdome appears fairly often as well:
1941 - The St. Louis Browns attempt to move to Los Angeles, but the winter meetings where the move's approval is set for a vote are scrapped by the attack on Pearl Harbor two days prior
1947 - NL President Ford Frick suggests to good friend and St. Louis Cardinals owner Sam Breadon that the team, currently renting Sportsmans Park from the Browns, should move to Chicago so it can finally have a successful NL franchise, but the White Sox and another area team stridently object so the team is instead sold to Fred Saigh
1953 - Facing federal tax evasion charges and bedeviled by Browns owner Bill Veeck loading the payroll with old Cardinals favorites and starting some wild promotions to shove his stadium's NL tenants out of town, Redbirds owner Fred Saigh nearly sells the team to a group in Houston before Gussie Busch floats in on a river of beer to save Stan Musial from a move to Texas
1953 - Saigh also nearly sold the Cardinals to a different beer baron - Fred Miller of Milwaukee - but as mentioned previously, the Budweiser guys saved the day instead
1953 - Unable to compete with the new Anheuser Busch money, the St. Louis Browns nearly move to Milwaukee instead, but Bill Veeck is blocked by the other owners. Milwaukee consoles itself by watching the ex-Boston Braves, who have just relocated there and will stay for a little over a decade. The Browns, who had started out as the original Milwaukee Brewers, move to Maryland and take on the Yankees franchise's original name as the Baltimore Orioles
1956 - The Washington Senators are courted by Los Angeles before the Brooklyn Dodgers enter the fray, then ultimately move to Minnesota five years later instead
1956 - New York Giants consider a move to Minneapolis before settling on San Francisco once the Brooklyn Dodgers' move west is solidified
1956 - The Kansas City Athletics owner, having just moved the team from Philadelphia, immediately regrets his decision and explores Los Angeles before being usurped by the Brooklyn Dodgers. He sells the team to Charles Finley a few years later
1958 - Incensed at having lost the Dodgers and Giants, New York mayor Robert Wagner enlists William Shea to try to poach the Phillies, Reds, or Pirates, before switching tactics and instead attacking MLB's antitrust status until they agree to allow the Mets as an expansion franchise.
1962 - Charles Finley tries to move the Athletics to Dallas but gets blocked by other owners
1963 - Charles Finley tries to move the Athletics to Louisville but gets blocked by other owners
1964-1966 - Charles Finley tries unsuccessfully to move the Athletics to Atlanta
1964-1966 - Charles Finley tries unsuccessfully to move the Athletics to San Diego
1964-1966 - Charles Finley tries unsuccessfully to move the Athletics to Indianapolis
1964-1966 - Charles Finley tries unsuccessfully to move the Athletics to Seattle, before ultimately moving them to Oakland in 1968
1965 - The Cincinnati Reds are nearly sold to San Diego by Bill DeWitt (father of current Cardinals owner Bill DeWitt) before local investors step in
1966 - "Singing Cowboy" Gene Autrey tries to move the Los Angeles Angels, formerly of Wrigley Field and Dodger Stadium, to Long Beach, but when the city refuses to pay for a new stadium unless they are called the Long Beach Angels, he moves the team to Anaheim instead so he can use a name that will appeal to a larger southern California base. (Arte Moreno eventually makes a mockery of this entire naming debacle by restoring the Los Angeles name despite the team still being in Anaheim, which the city objects to, leading to the team briefly being called, at least in Spanish, Los Angeles de Los Angeles de Anaheim)
1968 - Bud Selig lures the White Sox to play some home games in Milwaukee and tries to buy the team and move it there, but the sale is blocked by other owners. Two years later he takes the Pilots from Seattle instead
1970s to 1990s - George Steinbrenner threatens to move the Yankees to New Jersey, also halfheartedly flirting with the New Orleans Superdome on a few brief occasions, particularly during a two-year stretch when the Yankees played at Shea Stadium (along with the Jets, Giants and Mets)
1973 - The Padres ink a deal to become the Washington (DC) Stars to replace the Texas Rangers version of the Senators, but after uniforms are designed and baseball cards printed, Ray Kroc of McDonalds fame steps in and keeps the team in San Diego
1975 - Charles Finley tries unsuccessfully to move the Athletics to Chicago's Comiskey Park...
1975 - ...because the White Sox' planned move to Seattle falls apart. Instead, baseball settled the debacle from the Pilots' quick exit via the Mariners expansion.
1976 - The San Francisco Giants try to leave Candestick Park for the warmer environs of Toronto, but a sale to the Labatts beer folks is blocked. Toronto gets the new Blue Jays franchise instead
1978 - Charles Finley tries unsuccessfully to move the Athletics to Denver
1979 - Charles Finley tries unsuccessfully to move the Athletics to New Orleans to play in the Superdome
1980s - Charles Finley tries unsuccessfully to sell the Athletics to Phoenix and/or to Denver again but is blocked by the city of Oakland after they lose the Raiders
1981 - The Pittsburgh Pirates entertain an offer to move to the Superdome in New Orleans, before the mayor threatens legal action
1981 - The Pirates entertain an offer from Tampa, which does not yet have a dome to offer and is ultimately rejected
1981-1985 - The Pittsburgh Pirates spend several years flirting with Denver, with talk dying down around the time of the (probably unrelated) MLB drug trial in the city, which implicates several players and the team's literally cocaine-addled parrot mascot
1985 - The Pittsburgh Pirates owner also flirts with a sale to Indianapolis, who has just stolen the Baltimore Colts from the NFL, but the mayor threatens to sue and scares both sides out of the deal
1987 - The Chicago White Sox flirt with the idea of moving to a new state-of-the-art dome being built in Tampa but ultimately settle for another Comiskey Park instead, thus narrowly helping the Windy City keep a professional baseball team
1990 - The San Francisco Giants attempt to secure funding for a new stadium in Santa Clara but it is voted down
1992 - The San Francisco Giants attempt to build a stadium in San Jose but the proposal is voted down
1993 - The San Francisco Giants again try to escape the bay area entirely with a move to Tampa's still-vacant state-of-the-art dome, but the other owners block the deal. The dome is eventually occupied by the Rays, who will eventually threaten to half-move to Montreal in part because they hate that dome
1995 - The Pittsburgh Pirates are nearly sold to a DC owner before being saved by Kevin McClatchey, who would eventually taint his legacy by making way for Bob Nutting to supplant him as owner in 2007
1997 - The Minnesota Twins try to move to Charlotte or Piedmont, but both this and Bud Selig's attempt to kill the team outright ultimately fail
2003 - With MLB taking ownership of the Montreal Expos the prior year, various moves are considered. The team plays some games in San Juan, Puerto Rico and kicks the tires on Portland OR, Monterrey Mexico, East Rutherford NJ, Norfolk VA, and Charlotte NC before finally convincing Orioles (neé St. Louis Browns, who started this whole list) owner Peter Angelos to give DC a third bite at the MLB apple.
Lately there has been talk of the Rays and A's moving, as well as Manfred threatening to kick the Brewers out of Milwaukee. It's fascinating to me how many of these prior relocations have involved Milwaukee, the A's, and Tampa... anyway feel free to call me an idiot for any of these you think may be incorrect or for any big ones I missed. Keep the faith, A's fans...

2023.05.30 21:16 great235 Seeking advice

Hello fellow veterans!
I don’t know where to begin.
I separated from the Army in 2007, proudly served for 6 years. Like many of you, I rarely sought treatment for anything, except for a skin rash I developed while deployed to Iraq.
When the time came for me to separate from the army, I spoke with a VA rep and only applied for disability for the skin rash, I was awarded 10% for that. Great!
Back then, I thought to myself “I just want to get out,” and “there are others that need it more than I do.” So I was happy with the 10%.
I’ve been experiencing back problems since 2012. I’ve not been in any sort of accident that would’ve caused the trauma. I feel desperate now as the pain has gotten worse as I’ve gotten older.
I’m currently seeing a back specialist and have an EMG scheduled for next month.
Diagnosed with: Spinal stenosis Lumbar spondylosis Degeneration of lumbar intervertebral disc Herniated disc Lumbar radiculopathy Lumbar spine instability
How do I service connect this?
When I enlisted, I was informed that I would need a medical waiver for scoliosis. I don’t know if it’s on the cervical or thoracic, or both sections of my spine. Is this the link I need?
I should also mention that I have radiculopathy in my arms/hand. I now know this because of I’ve been googling the terms used in my diagnosis above. I also reported the symptoms to my doctor.
I looked through my old army records, and found a packet the VA sent me containing my service medical records. I assume this is the same as the C-file. The medical waiver is not there. In fact, I have more crap pertaining to SRPing than anything else.
I’ve been talking to a VSO and he assures me the VA will find any and all records to support my claim. Something tells me I need to turn in as much evidence as I can.

I'm currently on Medboard and talked to my paralegal specialist about some discrepancies on my sleep study test (wrong date), I was told that VA is about to take away claims for sleep apnea so they don't really check the date and I should not worry about it being dated wrong??. She doesn't know when but she said it's happening. Is this true?

2023.05.30 20:14 AvocadoSpirited3804 Securing an apartment out of state

Looking for advice from landlords, leasing agents from apartment complexes...folks who have moved to a new state with no job waiting for them. I am planning a move from Virginia to Florida. Main question to landlords/leasing agents is, if I am an out of state applicant, you only check for proof of employment during the application process, correct? I would be employed at my current job in Virginia...and I would not resign until the day I get in the car and physically relocate...or resign a few days after I relocate. I would not have a job waiting for me in Florida. But I would be employed with my current company until 72 hours before I move into the apartment. If you want context read below, if not please just consider the main question of proof of income/employment during lease approval
I'm a recruiter (talent acquisition specialist), masters degree, 20 years work experience...so I know hiring out of state with intent to relocate is a far shot-I delete those applications constantly. In fact I would only consider them if my company couldn't find local talent-it always can. This includes remote/telework. If you can't meet the residency requirement-delete. While I will pray for a dream scenario, I am not making solid plans on waiting for a job offer out of state. When I physically make the move, I will have 6 months living expenses in saving, (12k), a monthly income of $1,300 before taxes (VA disability), and a 720 credit score, 6 years of being a homeowner, twice, with a never late payment. squeaky clean background & credit report. My plan is to
  1. secure apartment out of state after house is sold
    1. resign on a Friday, drive to Florida that weekend move into apartment by Monday (11 hr drive)
    2. pray and pray and pray company will allow me to work remotely in Florida until they find replacement for me onsite and this will last 30-60 days. That miracle will solve all my problems!! I can absolutely do my job remotely, but so can other flex remote recruiters,
    3. once I get in Florida, if current company doesn't retain me past Friday, find a new job asap (approximate it will take me 30-60 days to find new position....job market for recruiters in Jacksonville is booming)
    4. live in apartment for a year while house hunting...live happily ever after in eternal summer ( I lived in Jacksonville twice while on active duty....loved it to death)
    5. potential idea that I am considering but feel guilty about...not resigning my from my job until after I have moved, be on PTO for a week while moving, resign from Florida. Thoughts? Its dirty, but they have tons of FLEX recruiters that could fill while they looked, or they could keep me as remote. I will of course formally request to be transferred to a remote recruiter position months before I love and pray for a miracle...but in the event they just cant promise me a position ever (hard to come by)

2023.05.30 16:03 Impressive-Bad-1500 Landscaper scammed myself and others

Throwaway account.
So, I broke rule number one of hiring a local contractor, in the Norfolk, VA area. I paid more money up front than I should have, roughly 2k. I realize how dumb I am, but that’s what I get for putting any faith in humanity.
Anyways, they came to do a landscaping job, gave me a reasonable quote and said they only required a small down payment to begin. I got a signed quote on paper with the itemized list of things to be done. They began work and knocked off a couple things from the list. Then they left for some more materials and to rent equipment. They asked me to pay the couple hundred-dollar deposit for the equipment, saying the one they had couldn’t fit in my yard. I was skeptical and asked a couple questions and got some pretty dumb answers, but I just assumed they were trying to get their local business up and running and needed a little help so I gave it to them. First big mistake. Because then the person continued to make excuses for other things and tacking on additional money. This whole time he was polite and professional, even calling me to give updates and all that. But it was starting to become more and more bullshit.
So I did what I should have done before even contacting the person to begin with, I looked them up. I had the person’s phone number saved as a contact in my phone, so some social media apps automatically ask you to add them. I’d noticed this person pop up once so I decided to check. The name on the account was different then the name he’s provided me and on his flyers/email. So I was like huh that’s strange, so I looked up the name and sure enough it was him.
Then I looked up their company name. They made it very similar to another bigger company in the area, which had many reviews on google, just to trick people. But I eventually found their reviews on local review sites, and then some scam tracking sites. That’s when I saw multiple people say they’ve done this exact same thing multiple times in the same area in the recent past. For very similar amounts of money. Now what little sympathy I had remaining is all out the door. I called and filed a police report, but the officer said at this point it’s not a criminal offense so they couldn’t do anything. Basically, because they started the work, now they’re just technically "working slow". But then he gave some examples of what I could do next based off some people he knew went through a similar situation. Including small claims court.
The information I know:
- Person used a fake name. Found them on social media
- Business is actually not a licensed business
- Lied about being BBB licensed and insured. Looked it up on their site.
- Found multiple people in same situation online
So my questions are:
- If I take this person to small claims court and win, I’ve seen sometimes that the defendant can literally just say they’re not going to pay up even right in front of the judge. So what’s the point?
- Am I allowed to reach out to the other people who got scammed, and see if they are interested in doing a combined lawsuit? And do the total damages accrue, causing the case to actually go to the district court if they are high enough? I saw somewhere small claims is only up to $5,000 in Virginia but correct me if I’m wrong please.
At the end of the day I’d much rather the person just finish the work, or pay me back. But if not, I would like to know what options I have. Thanks in advance!

2023.05.29 22:47 cankleenthusiast Norfolk MWR Marina

I’ve been stationed in Norfolk for more than ten years now, and have never used the MWR Marina. I was checking out their website just now, and saw that they super reasonable prices (compared to VA Beach, at least) for boat rentals, but you have to take their boating safety course first.
Does anyone have any experience with the marina or the course? I’d like to give them a shot this summer but I want to know what I’m getting into first.
Thanks!

We are Southern Californians and were hoping to be able to stay here in San Diego or Hawaii but just doing some homework to know what we are getting into.
