[GUIDE] Online Multiplayer - Changing Hosts/Transferring Server Save file
I'm writing this down to help others that also have the same hosting issue. There is already an answer to this in the Stardew Valley forum and an archived SV guide but it seems to be missing one step that would make the transfer essentially flawless playable, which is my goal to clarify here.
THE ISSUE: Following the steps provided in the link, the server runs as it would normally with the original host, with the exception of (1) the Main Menu showing the original host's character instead of yours - which really doesn't matter gameplay-wise, and another issue in which (2) the indoors of houses started looking like it came from a pixel horror RPG.
THE FIX: (1) To change the character being displayed on Main Menu, copy the entire (or the new if you've already followed the instructions on the forum) of your intended host, then change the headers to and just copy the remaining text within the <> that comes after Farmer.

(2) I found out, through trial and error and scanning the entire XML code line-by-line, that there are these lines:

There is already a script in the archived SV guide that offers to switch player and farmhand with ease - does it work?
  • I have not tried it.
There is a comment in the archived SV guide regarding bundle rewards like cart/bus no longer working.
  • I played on the server since day 1 with the host, so I had no issues with this. If anyone does, maybe we can discuss. Apparently, some features do stop working when your character has not received the mail for a specific feature, which is the trigger for activation. This can be fixed by going to the original host's and copying it to your character's to activate the same features that were already unlocked in your last session. Thanks to u/atravita for this.

2023.03.18 06:09 Tinfoil_Haberdashery Suddenly getting graphical glitches and low frame-rates on my wife's gaming laptop.

My wife just got a new gaming laptop. Asus ROG G513RC-LP179W. We added 16gb of RAM and a 1Tb SSD. Played some Valheim, had some fun. Everything was working fine. High FPS at max settings.
My wife installed and was playing some Stardew Valley, but when she came back from dinner, the computer was hard frozen--required a hard reboot with the power button.
Things were immediately strange. The first thing we noticed was that steam's game library page was acting weird. Showing up as a white or black screen, or displaying whatever had been on the store page like it was frozen. We found out this is a somewhat common occurrence, and managed to get around it by disabling GPU accelerated rendering of web views. We also updated Nvidia's graphics drivers as part of the process.
But when we tried running Valheim again today, it was struggling mightily. ~4 fps. Opening the task manager indicated that the graphics card is operating normally when running the game. Lowering the graphics settings on Valheim yields no benefit to performance. I reenabled GPU accelleration in Steam, and while it caused the same issue in the standard client, we were able to launch Valheim through big picture mode...and it was still slow.
Other graphically intensive games are similarly affected, though perhaps only those installed via Steam; The Sims 4 runs fine. Even Nvidia's Geforce Experience program was behaving oddly--showing a second, smaller version of the window over the top of the actual window, and operating at low fps, lagging considerably when scrolling or displaying their ads. I tried reinstalling the drivers--no luck. I also updated Windows.
I put this under "Windows" because I'm not certain whether it's a hardware or software issue. Any ideas would be appreciated.
EDIT: I just benchmarked the computer with Unengine Heaven. Oddly, it started out behaving similarly to the other games, chugging along at single-digit FPS, but after minimizing to check the process manager's graphs, upon reopening the benchmark it was cruising along at over 100fps. This was a repeatable behavior. Not sure what that implies.

Je ne sais pas quel article de couleur orange utiliser, mais un vrai orange...
La liste des articles à colorier pour la couture ne fonctionne pas ici. J'ai essayé le café, la pomme de terre et l'engrais mais Qi ne veut pas de ça.

The framework of an imposing, partially built starship hung silently in the enormous construction cradle against the backdrop of the blackness of space.
So far the creation of the massive starship known as Ark Leusinia, which was named after a kingdom of wealth and learning in asari mythology, was proceeding as planned.
Matriarch Nuara gazed out of the window at the magnificent sight. She was inwardly relieved and thankful that Jian Garson had somehow secured enough funding for The Initiative to continue. She turned back to address her fellow matriarchs in the meeting room of the construction hub.
"Good day to you my fellow explorers and dreamers. I am ever so grateful that you have all found the time to come here and see what has been achieved thus far. I realise that our efforts in this venture have not been well received on Thessia lately. Often we have been the target of ridicule, derision, mockery and sometimes outright bigotry in that some senior matriarchs see our efforts as being nothing more than a "human boondoggle" as we were recently labelled. I asked you all to come here so as to see the progress that we have made with you own eyes. And now that financial backing has been fully secured, I am supremely confident that the Ark Leusinia will be ready by 2184 and will join the Hyperion for launch sometime in late 2185. Our quest to finally explore our neighbouring galaxy is almost within our grasp!"
The gathered matriarchs tapped the table with their hands as a sign of support. One raised her hand in order to ask a question.
"Matriarch Nuara, do you have an approximation as to the numbers of colonists this Ark can carry?" asked Matriarch Jinada Vala of Serrice.
"Yes I do. I would draw your attention to the data-pack that will now be appearing on your pads. Each of the proposed five Arks will carry twenty thousand colonists. The flagship, The Nexus, will transport approximately forty thousand or so colonists. The Nexus will be the hub of our new colonies within the Andromeda galaxy, similar to the Citadel."
The matriarchs all were now reading the data read outs on the massive ship known as The Nexus.
"I would add that The Nexus should be considered as more of a mobile space station then a starship. Once it has arrived in the Andromeda galaxy, it will act as a docking station for the other five Arks as well as a central administrative hub that will co-ordinate colony policy and trade," added Nuara.
Another matriarch indicated she wished to speak.
"I have to say that while all this is impressive, I am a little sceptical as to the reason we are doing this at all. In addition, why are we helping construct an Ark for the Quarians?" Matriarch Nyxor Shashi asked pointedly. "Surely the edicts of the Galactic Council exclude them for this venture?"
"Actually no. The Quarians, as you are probably aware, have the longest record of living aboard starships. Their Ark, the Keelah Si'yah will be captained by Qetsi'Olam vas Keelah Si'yah and her first officer will be Commander Senna'Nir vas Keelah Si'yah. This particular Ark is designed to carry many of the minor galactic races like our friends the Hanar and the Drell, the Elcor and Volus. So as such, we see them as being an integral and necessary part of the Initiative. All these races are able to purchase their passage or provide barter in exchange for the trip. From what I understand the Galactic Council, and specifically Councillor Tevos, are indifferent to the Quarians being involved in the project. I suspect they are secretly glad to see a number of the Quarians leaving the galaxy, sad though that is."
Matriarch Nyxor nodded with agreement.
"This is all well and good but I have to ask, why did you ask us all to come here Nuara? It can't be for financial reasons as you informed us that the project is now fully funded," inquired Matriarch Nasolla Edavius from the republic of Nartin.
"You are correct dearest friend Nasolla. The reason I asked you all hear is that you are all influential voices within your respective republics. You are also committed and dedicated Siarists. You all heard the uplifting and inspirational speech made by Captain Duncan Larkin some two weeks ago. His message was not just to us Asari who are followers of Siarism, but to all sapient life – We Are One!"
All the matriarchs gathered repeated the refrain. Nuara continued,
"I have asked for his public support however it appears, sadly, he is unavailable at this juncture. So I turn to you, my oldest and most trusted friends, to lend your voices to help turn the tide of public opinion to being more favourable towards the Initiative. We have the funding yet the people are hesitant. Also the older, more entrenched and conservative matriarchs like Hodemei and M'quarhie are openly critical of the venture. So far they have been dismissive and guardedly hostile to the project. I believe that if they could, they would shut us down."
"What about Matriarch T'daari? Surely she could be of help?" questioned Matriarch Jinada Vala of Serrice.
"She too is unable to give us support… publicly. As everyone knows, the past few days on Thessia have been…. dramatic if that's an appropriate description of events? The republic of Dassus has been a quiet supporter of the Initiative, in that their shipyards have been working with us in the construction of the Leusinia. Matriarch T'daari has her reasons to stay back from this. I think that she has her own plans as she has made it clear that she intends to build new warships for her fleet and as well, begin colonisation of the newly discovered garden world out past the Niacal marches known as Latika's World. Thus I do not believe that she and her republic are able to be in a position to lend us much in the way of public support yet that also means they won't hinder us either."
All the assembled matriarchs nodded in agreement.
"In a way I am somewhat glad to hear that she has no real interest in being directly involved. She has become extremely powerful since her return from her expedition. Her son, Captain Larkin, is also a lightning rod of controversy. Perhaps it is best we stay out of the T'daari's way and carry on quietly," noted Matriarch Jinada cautiously.
There was a murmur of agreement from the gathered matriarchs.
"That is probably the wise course of action although I confess that I would like to meet Captain Larkin as he seems so… interesting," smirked Nuara.
There was another and slightly louder murmur of agreement with wry knowing smiles.
"I think we all would like to "meet him" Nuara," joked Nyxor with a faintly salacious grin. Her fellow matriarchs chuckled in concordance.
"Ahem… moving on then… it is our hope that all Arks and The Nexus be completed by 2184, with final fit outs and shakedown cruises scheduled for 2185. The plan will be that the fleet will launch over a period of a few months and not as a whole just in case there are… issues along the way," announced Nuara beginning the tone back down to a sober level.
"Prudent although a little presumptive if I may say so. If the first arrival is alone and encounters… issues, they will have no back up at all." Matriarch Lidassmea Sederia of Attena who had been silent up till now. "This piece meal approach concerns me. There is safety in numbers Nuara."
"I know, I know yet this is the way we are going to do this. The Nexus will blaze the trail and the other Arks will follow. It has been agreed at the highest level that this is the way in which we will set off," replied Nuara with a hint of reluctance. The matriarchs had a dubious look on their faces as this was not the Asari way.
"Perhaps we shouldn't focus on this aspect nor highlight it. We need all the positive energy we can get in order to recruit the crew, specialists, huntresses and commandos as well as colonists for the Leusinia. They need to be supremely confident that the mission will be a success," Jinada stated with emphasis on the confidence. No one would voluntarily step forward if there were doubts about the safety of the mission. Asari were courageous but cautious as well.
"We will also be recruiting and crewing the human ship Hyperion with a small number of our people as well as a large number to be both crew and colonists on The Nexus. I will be going with The Nexus," declared Nuara. That got her another round of table taps as a show of support. She smiled at her friends, grateful that she had their support. Queuing up the next data point, she started speaking once more,
"And now we will move onto discussing the Pathfinder program…"

2181 – 19:42, Saturday, January 9th – T'daari Estate – Dassus - Thessia - Parnithia System
"I'm worried about Nari," announced Lyessrae to her friends as she looked up from her dinner.
"We all are," replied Lileah'sah sympathetically.
"She is working so hard on that mural, almost constantly. And she's refusing to stop. She says that we are not allowed to view it until it is finished," added Lyessrae in a mournful voice. "What is worse is that she is not even here but in Serrice in the Agora."
Nari had demanded that she immediately paint the mural to show the horror she encountered so that it may be displayed in the Peoples Hall in Serrice for all to see for all time.
Fiahnni entirely agreed and sent Nari with Sam'nelea and two platoons of commandos to be her escort and deter any interference of her work. Sam'nelea had strict instructions that if anyone tried to stop Nari, she was to use violence with extreme prejudice as well as to safeguard Nari at all costs.
"I understand you miss her, we all do Lyessrae. Yet what she is doing is not just important to her but to all Asari and beyond," said Duncan as he leaned across from his chair and gave her a hug. "I only learned the other day as to what vileness was beneath the fortress. What she is doing will make all those lives taken have a voice. Their murders will be for all to see. Sam is looking after her. You know she will make sure Nari eats, gets some rest and is undisturbed. The quicker she gets this out of her soul, the sooner she will be home and we can all look after her as she will need it."
Lyessrae nodded in understanding with a long sigh and shrugged in mournful acceptance. The master chef was also grateful that Chianay and Elanini had prepared dinner tonight as she was so tired from working in the manor's kitchens and in addition, she hadn't been sleeping well since Nari had left a few days ago.
Everyone seated around the large dining table nodded in consensus. Tonight Chianay and Elanini had chosen to prepare the evening meal for all who lived with the trio. Uschari and Mi'niley and Tre'mete were somewhat surprised that Chianay could actually cook as she was a versatile chef when she choose to be. Her younger sister was also an adept hand in the kitchen. Lileah'sah, being younger than her cousins, always knew they were good cooks as they had looked after her when she was very young.
Aenthiah and Saendi were away for the time being as they, with the Order, were busily hunting down all those who were accessories to the crimes perpetrated by House T'reaphia.
"Can someone pass the potatoes please?" asked Joseph as he had finished his first serve of roast beef and vegetables and was still hungry. Chianay and Elanini had made a roast beef dinner for everyone as it was just easier to prepare, safe for Joseph to eat and all enjoyed it now that they had gained a taste for the meal since Christmas.
"Here you go darling," said Uschari as she handed Joseph the plate of crispy roast potatoes.
"Thanks love," he smiled back to her.
Mi'niley picked up the roasted Brussel sprouts with garlic and chili and served herself then Joseph before passing it to Uschari who was still hungry herself.
"Anyone want any more Horseradish?" asked Duncan with a cheeky grin as he waved the small jar in the air.
"Dude…" Joseph rolled his eyes at the bad joke then helped himself to more roast beef.
"Sorry Joe, just couldn't resist it. How are things going anyway?"
"The herd has settled in. I think tomorrow we will be getting the first shipment of supplies like fresh hay bales, oats and grains, saddlery, bridles and such," announced Mi'niley as Joseph had his mouth full of food.
"And how is… Silver?" asked Duncan with a barely restrained grin.
Joseph shook his head, swallowed and sighed.
"I will forever curse Matriarch T'reaphia when she named the stallion… Silver," he muttered darkly.
"Aw come on Joe… you know you want to say the words. It's a real shame you weren't in the Rangers…"
Duncan had to quickly duck aside as Mi'niley used her biotics to throw a bread roll at his head. Everyone else, including Joseph laughed at the sudden food missile attack.
"Hey! Don't waste food Min," chided Duncan with a smirk as he reached down to get the roll.
"Stop teasing my exhausted Siame and your best friend Duncan!" falsely huffed Mi'niley with a pretend frown. "I haven't seen you down at the stables helping with the herd at all!" She folded her arms, this time with a real accusatory look.
"And that's because I'm making us all money," he replied with a small smile.
All eyes suddenly were upon Duncan.
"Seriously?" said Uschari in a small hopeful voice. She, along with everyone in the crew of the Perihelion plus thousands of others were hugely invested in Rainbows Connection Hedge Fund.
He nodded with a faint dry smile, then continued calmly,
"The other day I made our first play. I've analysed a whole lot of companies and have bought into a number who will be good long term returning investments and shorted about half a dozen more as they are well deserving of a financial shellacking since they've been cooking their books, making the profit estimates look way better than their actual returns. Two of them instantly tanked once I made the plays earlier yesterday. Our return to Rainbows Connection was roughly one hundred and fifty two million credits. The bonus is that I have now taken over those companies since their share price went through the floor, fired the CEO and board plus senior management, given a pay rise to the staff and I expect that they will be turning a profit within four months."
Duncan leaned back in his chair, took a sip of his vintage Penfolds Grange Cabinet Sauvignon, savouring the leathery dry tannins and rich punchy robust fruitiness of the wine.
A stunned silence filled the air.
Uschari dropped her fork onto her plate with a clatter, her mouth wide open and incredulity writ large across her pretty face.
Joseph sat gobsmacked as did Mi'niley. Tre'mete and Lileah'sah couldn't be more proud of Duncan and just had the biggest grins on their faces. Chianay and Elanini smiled widely as they knew what was going on.
"You're serious aren't you?" Mi'niley said in a small voice.
"Yep. As serious as a heart attack Min. The two companies we made a killing on were well overpriced as stocks and I'm surprised that no one had spotted the play as of yet. It helps that Ray saw it too. Got to give credit to our friendly electronic over-boss," he said with a wink to the security camera and raised his wine glass in toasting his synergised partner.
Ray appeared in the dining room, dressed as The Courier from Fallout: New Vegas.
"Thank you. It's about time I got some credit for all the work I do. Now if there's nothing else, I'm about to head off to the Big Empty to experience the wackiness that awaits therein." Ray looked great in its LA Riot Gear Armour, hefting the Gobi Desert Sniper Rifle in its right arm.
"Nope old sport, have a blast there. Just watch out for the Lobotomites!" called out Duncan.
"Ha! That'll be nothing new, I deal with them all the time here anyway!" Ray snarked with a teasing grin.
Chianay was still fascinated that there was a real AI living with them. She had been "read in" to the T'daari's biggest secret and was totally fine with it as she knew the incredible advantages that Ray had given to her family.
Uschari, Mi'niley and Joseph had finally worked it out a week ago and were totally fine with Ray. Lyessrae was at first a little hesitant but trusted Duncan completely and she now knew that Ray was her and Nari's friend, she was content. Nari, when she was informed, was excited and wanted to know Ray's thoughts on art. She and Ray had a few talks about creativity and art much to her delight.
"Yippie Ki-yay campers!" Ray said to them all with a grin then vanished back to the Mojave Desert.
"I will never understand why Ray loves your old games so much Duncan?' said Lileah'sah with a wondering look on her face. She shrugged and continued to eat her dinner.
"It's because it's a limited experience for Ray and Ray likes the challenge of not knowing what's coming plus they really love shaping the unfolding story with their choices," he replied helping himself to another few slices of beef and a Yorkshire pudding with some gravy. He brandished the jar of Horseradish at Mi'niley with an evil grin. She snorted a laugh.
Tre'mete nodded in agreement with her beloved as she had watched Ray's adventures on Duncan's laptop occasionally, laughing aloud and being drawn into the sprawling adventures.
"I'm going to play those games one day," she declared as she accepted the plate of sliced beef from Duncan and took a few more slices for herself.
"Go for it babe. I suspect that Ray, once it's finished playing with them, is going to thoroughly overhaul the games graphics, interface, even install a VI to conduct the games characters conversations and interactions. It's going to be another revenue stream for us."
Again everyone stared at Duncan, even his bondmates.
"You what?" said Lileah'sah in utter surprise with her mouth half full.
"We're going to launch a gaming hub on the Extranet in conjunction with the streaming site of all the entertainment we have. I'm going to pinch the name from an old science fiction story, we're going to call it The Oasis as it will be a safe place recreation, relaxation and restoration. People can pay for a day pass, a month pass or a yearly subscription to access The Oasis. It will be cheap so as to encourage engagement. We will not be harvesting peoples data. I'm going to make that abundantly clear to our subscribers. We just need the necessary details and that's it. I think we will be ready to go live in a few weeks, maybe even in time for my birthday?" he said hopefully.
"Goddess spank me silly Duncan! If you and Ray are going to do that... you are going to make billions!" gasped Elanini. "The market for online gaming is huge and Ray has shown me some of the classic games you brought with you. Asari will flock in droves to play them. And hosting everything on one site… that's genius." She had to take a swig of her wine to settle herself.
"Not only that, since my darling Tre'mete's fashion show debut is only ten days away, we are also going to host Saucy Secrets on The Oasis, allowing customers to use their virtual avatars to try on the garments before purchasing them. Or even buy online clothing for their avatars."
Tre'mete was just all smiles. Duncan had asked her earlier if she was interested in this business idea. She wrapped her arms around him tightly, hugging him hard and nodded as she knew he was giving her yet another bite of the pie by widening her reach to a greater audience.
"My wonderful man is going to make us richer beyond the dreams of avarice. Growing up poor, I always had dreams about being rich. Bonding to my sweetest Lily gave me security. Duncan is giving me everything. And he is giving everything to you all as well," said Tre'mete proudly as she took his right hand in hers and squeezed it.
"I am a river to my people," he said quietly, smiling at all those he cared for and loved.
"A river? More like a flash flood Duncan," Joseph laughed.
All joined in with the laughter.
The rest of dinner was full of excited conversation.
Lyessrae was no longer melancholy. Duncan had lifted her spirits and she knew with iron clad certainty that she and Nari were blessed by Tevura and Athame and the universe as a whole. She and her bondmate were secure and safe.
Besides, there was apple crumble and custard for dessert to look forwards to so it was all good.

The plan wasn’t going very well.
The plan was to introduce three groups groups of venlil to Stardew Valley in an effort to get them to spread out the popularity of the game.
The first group was made up of some venlil exchange program partners and venlil refugee caregivers whose human partners and charges were still alive, but feeling depressed.
The second group were witnesses of human suicides and relatives of venlil too distraught to distraught to attend. This included the rare few venlil whose human partners had miraculously survived trying to kill themselves in Venlil Prime’s high gravity.
The second group was made up of some venlil exchange program partners and venlil refugee caregivers whose human partners and charges had died or committed suicide respectively.
It turns out that putting individuals of the latter group in the same room is a bad idea.
After only a few minutes, the latter group collapsed in on itself, its members taking out their vicious self loathing on each other, only being held back from slaughtering each other by members of the prior two groups.

”OH, YOU’RE ONE TO FUCKING TALK! YOU’RE JUST AS BAD AS I AM! WHY DON’T YOU TAKE YOUR OWN ADVICE AND GO DIE IN A FUCKING DITCH, WHY DON’T YA?!” Another venlil responded.
Various other venlil joined the frenzied shouting and struggling. Occasionally, one venlil would free themselves and they would violently beat the nearest venlil into the floor, sending orange viscera everywhere. Thankfully, members of the first two groups were able to stop them from killing one another, and there were various armed guards patrolling the facility in case things got really ugly.
I sighed to myself.
This was going to be a depressing headache.

Several hours and a lot of stress relieving Tetris music later, I checked on the players.
There were a couple that were going well, but the majority of the venlil were… lapsing into depression.
The first one was Jeki, a venlil farmer who had been assigned to care for a young human man. She physically and emotionally lashed out at him after an incident activated his fight or flight response, and ended up fatally injuring him. He had seven broken ribs puncturing both of his lungs. She was forced to watch as his breathing got less and less and he deliberately refused any help from her.
In the weeks since his death, Jeki had been reported to threaten to violently assault any and all venlil that dared to express any amount of joy at the fact that her charge was dead. Some of the ones who she targeted were people that were just minding their own business, their joys completely unrelated to the human’s death. She even threatened to beat her own little siblings.
When I walked into her guest room, she was curled into a ball on the floor. The screen displayed a scene with Alex showing the player his mother’s music box.
“I didn’t mean it.” She spoke. Her voice quivering in despair. “I just wanted to protect m’family. The only thing I ended up doing was taking someone else’s chance at a family away. He came here, ready t’call me a new sister. Eager to explore and learn about everything. I took all o’that away from ‘im.” She continued a strange foreign accent in her voice.
“Why does your speech sound so… different?” I tried to ask as politely as I could.
“This was his accent. It’s the only part of him I actually noticed before he went down in the gallows.” She explained, desperately trying to not sob.
There wasn’t much after that.
The second was an old venlil named Berro. He had witnessed the suicide of a human only a little over a week ago. He tried to save the human, but he didn’t make it in time. The only thing he could do was listen to her last words.
When, I walked into his room, he simply sat there, staring at the screen. The screen showed pictures of Harley playing with cows alongside the player.
“She probably would’ve loved this.” He stated. The woman which he was referring to was obvious.
“She reminded me of someone, ya know. One time my son brought his exchange parter, Rita, over to the house. I wasn’t exactly a welcoming host. I basically threatened to brutally murder her, right to her face. Called her a bitch while pointing the knife at her. Her expression of pure unfiltered terror wasn’t something that meant much at the time…” he said as his gaze turned downward in shame. “The dead girl made the exact same face when I approached her.”
“Well…” I began. “I hope you make amends.” I offered some flimsy comfort. Berro simply sighed.
The third and most extreme was a young female venlil named Dila. She had an extremely rare genetic mutation that gave her pink wool. She was assigned to care for an orphaned little human girl. After an incident at the household caused the little girl to run away, the little girl’s body was found crumpled at the bottom of a cliff. Dila herself went on an extreme path of self harm before coming to the facility. I could see the outlines of knife wounds bleeding through the fur of her arms.
When I entered her room, she was screaming her head off, smashing her fists so hard against the floor that she was beginning to bleed. The screen showed a scene of Penny in an argument with her mother Pam.
“I killed her.” She sobbed. “She was ONLY SEVEN YEARS OLD! And I FUCKING KILLED HER! SHE LOVED PINK! SHE LOVED ME! WHY THE FUCK DIDN’T I LOVE HER BACK?!” She screamed at the top of her lungs.
I couldn’t just leave her like this.
I walked up to her and knelt down, opening my arms up for a hug. Dila slowly crawled into my embrace, her shouting and screaming slowly dissolving into whimpering and sobbing.
I already knew that there were at least 20 other venlil that were probably having depressing reactions such as these first three.

Hello all,
I'm in the market for one of those really small PCs that are about 6" x 6" or smaller. Basically, I want a portable multi function mini PC that I can use for work. I have a two monitor set up for my current PC. Thing is, I want a smaller system that I can switch on and go to 1 monitor a piece if I need it, mostly for when work demands it. I typically use my old laptop for this function, but it's so slow and takes up quite a bit of space, so I figured this will be a good alternative. So, I'm looking for one of these small computers that I can switch on and swap my display to(I will eventually add a third monitor for ease, but space does not allow for it presently.)
While I'm not exactly 'fluent' with computers, I do know a bit of the language.
Ideally I want a solid balance of size, heat, power, and price. Would a newer i7 with 16gb be too unrealistic for the size and cooling capacity of a 6x6x2 case and my workload? I've always built my computers with large cases and many fans, as I don't want to have to concern myself with temperatures. Having such a small case, would I experience throttling often? I mainly would run programs like Excel (usually quite a few windows of it - 3-4 at any given time), my companies database program (sometime but rarely two instances of this as well, and it's quite demanding), google chrome, outlook, and Adobe Acrobat. Would going up to 32GB of ram make a noticeable difference in heat vs performance?
Do any of you all use these types of computers? Do you experience heat issues? Do you have any recommendations for a specific model?
I should add, I'm not adverse to gaming on it, either. A benefit of the size means it can travel well, and if I'm in a hotel away from home, it'd be nice to have small selection of easy to run games that work on the integrated graphics, (Stardew Valley, Terraria, KOTOR, and the like. If I can stretch it, maybe something as demanding as FO:NV.) I'm not talking anything super demanding, graphics wise. More so just something for you all to keep in mind when evaluating my entire potential use of the system.

Preface Saw one earlier today that was not exactly the best advice so I'm going to clear up some stuff. The explanations used are simplified, mostly because I do not want to make this too long.
This guide is to help you understand some of the technical jargon to be able to make your own purchasing decisions, and not a true "guide" on how to buy your perfect laptop.
In general just look at your course requirements and recommendations. Then look at the info in this guide and see if you can get something with more value for money based on what you've understood from this. For example, in a game development course, you are often recommended heavy gaming laptops. However, with some searching of your own, you would find that a Dell XPS 15 would be slightly lighter while having a dGPU for heavy graphics tasks and longer battery life. This is what the guide aims to be, information to help you make a better choice.

1. Introduction: It is more important to get a laptop which fits your course requirements. For example, generally in a Game Development course you would want something with a dedicated GPU (dGPU) rather than an integrated GPU (iGPU). For a design course you may want an emphasis on your screen's colour accuracy above other features etc. So, always remember to check with your course requirements first.
2. CPUs The CPU is essentially the "brain" of the device, with stronger CPUs being able to perform more instructions in a shorter amount of time. The general trade-off for CPUs is the stronger the CPU, the more heat/energy the CPU uses. To check how much heat is outputed, we tend to look at the rated Thermal Design Power (TDP) of the CPU. In general, the lower the TDP, the cooler the CPU would run. There are some outliers but that's a whole other can of worms that belongs on another subreddit.
2.1. Brands There are 3 main brands, Intel, AMD and Apple.
For Apple, their M1 and M2 CPUs run on an ARM based architecture. What this means is that they mostly can only run applications built for ARM and x86 applications would have to be emulated. This is where consulting your course requirements comes into play as you would be able to check which software your course will be using and how well it can run on Apple's M series chips based on benchmark results found online, allowing you to decide on whether you can use a MacBook with an ARM processor.
For Intel and AMD, these CPUs run on the x86 architecture, meaning greater compatibility with many apps as x86 has been the industry standard for many years. In recent years, both brands are mostly on equal footing, with Intel edging out in single core tasks while AMD mostly has a lead on Multi-Core tasks. This gap has been closing in recent years and most CPUs from the past 2 years should do well in terms of power consumption and speed. In general, look for an Intel CPU from 11th Gen onwards or AMD CPU from Ryzen 5000 onwards.
2.2. Clock Speeds and Generational Improvements In CPUs, what we most often focus on are clock speeds and improvements per generation. This is mostly false. Anyone who tries to tell you a CPU is better because the clock speed is higher is normally lying to you, unless the CPUs are of the same brand and same generation. More important than clock speeds are the generational improvements. An example of this would be comparing a Ryzen 1600 and a Ryzen 5600 with a 54.2% single core improvement and a 63.3% multi core improvement in Cinebench R20 (based on gadgetversus). These are chips with a 3 generation gap between the 2. If you look at the clock speed of the chips, there is a marginal difference in the base clock speeds and though the boost clock is higher, boost clocks are not normally sustained for long periods of time, hence I skipped over this.
3. GPUs In the GPU space there are 2 main competitors. AMD and Nvidia. In raytracing performance, Nvidia still takes the performance crown while in regular rasterisation work, NEWER AMD cards win out slightly. Huge emphasis on the word NEWER. Some of the newer AMD GPUs may be hard to find on laptops and so if graphics performance is an emphasis, consider using Nvidia instead.
One point not many talk about is driver support. Nvidia cards tend to have better drivers than AMD. What this potentially means is that there may be more performance and less random crashes on Nvidia cards than AMD cards.
It is worth noting that AMD cards do tend to be cheaper than Nvidia cards. They are also less power hungry, though again, please look at the TDP of the cards to decide on which model to buy. Again, something within the last 2 years is highly recommended.
Another comparison point is the GPUs VRAM. The following explanation is immensely simplified. VRAM is super fast storage, similar to regular RAM, but specific to GPUs. More VRAM means more graphics data can be stored in this super fast storage, allowing for faster computation as everything the GPU needs to accessed can be fetched from VRAM. More VRAM can also allow for things such as more/higher resolution textures as these textures require more storage space, and can therefore only be loaded with more VRAM.
3.1. iGPU V dGPU One thing that I had ommitted from the previous chunk of text are iGPUS. These are GPUs that come attached with the CPU. These GPUs are a lot weaker than their dedicated counterparts and have less VRAM, though that doesn't mean that they can't do work. Many of the iGPUs nowadays are fairly competent, being able to run simpler games like Story of Seasons or Stardew Valley well. Just don't get your hopes up that your random AMD iGPU with 512MB of VRAM can run Elden Ring on max settings. There are 2 flavours of iGPUs, Intel and AMD. Intel currently still has some driver problems, meaning certain applications may not run smoothly or at all. This is another part where consulting the course requirements comes in handy in terms of what software you will need to run.
3.2. Apple You'll notice that above, I did not mention Apple at all even though they have strong GPUs. This is because Apple GPUs are locked down to MacBooks. This is also why I will not be writing much of a summary here. In essence, Apple GPUs are good and very, very power efficient. If you want to use a MacBook consult your course requirements.
4. RAM Random Access Memory (RAM) is a topic of much discussion recently with DDR5 coming out. Ram is essentially very fast memory applications can use to store certain pieces of information, allowing for the CPU to fetch the information for compute quickly instead of using slower storage such as through the computer's SSD or HDD. Consult your course requirements for how much RAM exactly that you would need. A general rule of thumb is 16gb minimum. Depending on the workload, more RAM may be required.
4.1. RAM Generations There are two types of RAM on the market currently, DDR4 and DDR5. In general, DDR5 is faster than DDR4, but DDR4 is cheaper. Again, check the course requirements for what type of applications you would be running and decide from there.
4.2. RAM Speed This is fairly straightforward. The bigger the number, the faster the RAM, the better and more expensive the RAM generally is. Take note to only compare performance in RAM Speeds against its own generations. Again, check your course requirements.
5. Screens The previous guide mentioned colour accuracy and colour spaces such as DCI-P3, SRGB and NTSC. Firstly, NTSC is not used frequently. Secondly, many colour spaces are not included in these 3. A more common colour space would be Adobe RGB (ARGB). DCI-P3 and ARGB are very similar, with DCI-P3 leaning more towards yellows and reds while ARGB leans towards blues and greens. More cinematic work is mastered in the DCI-P3 colour space. (Viewsonic article). The percentages attached to the colour spaces are how much of the colours can be shown. For SRGB mostly, you will see percentages that go above 100. This means that the colours can be more saturated. Simply tune it down if you would like.
I won't go into screen sizes as that is mostly a personal preference. What I will mention is that 16 inch displays really benefit from going 1440p rather than 1080p with text looking clearer and sharper.
Aspect ratios are another big part of laptop screens. 16:10 is a longer aspect ratio in terms of the width of the screen. Those who write a lot may prefer a 16:10 screen as they will be able to see more of their document at a glance. 16:9 is the standard aspect ratio and what many are accustomed to. This is mostly personal preference.
Screen technology is also something that was missed. There are 3 main types that I will cover here. OLEDs, IPS and VA/TN.
OLEDs are screens where blacks are truly black as the individual pixels can be turned off to display real black, rather than a grey-ish mess. However, OLEDs may not be very bright and older models of OLEDs can sometimes have a yellow-ish hue to them. OLEDs also emit less blue light [thanks roguecupcake!].
IPS screens are very common nowadays with not much to write home about. They can be colour accurate and have decent viewing angles, as well as be fast, supporting high refresh rates.
VA/TN panels can be very, very fast. Sometimes going up to 240hz or even 360hz in terms of refresh rate. Where these panels suffer is in everything else. Viewing angles are terrible, colour accuracy is mostly subpar. Not to say that these panels can't look good, just that those panels are rare.
6. IO IO refers to the ports on the side of your laptop. These are mostly personal preference. If you are the type to have many peripherals, try getting a laptop with more USB-A ports so that you will not need to carry around many dongles. For more recent laptops, the USB-A ports are mostly of the USB 3.0 spec, so do not worry about the ports not having that blue connector thing. What is more important is the spec of the USB C port. Try to find a laptop with Thunderbolt support and power delivery on the USB C port. What this means is that you can charge your laptop through the USB C and connect to external, high bandwidth devices such as an external desktop grade GPU through the thunderbolt connection. Thunderbolt tends to not be present on AMD devices.
7. Wi-Fi Wifi on laptops have mostly been fixed at Wi-Fi 5/AC for awhile with the newer Wi-Fi 6/AX standard showing up more recently. In general Wi-Fi 6/AX is faster but more pricey. This is generally a quality of life component and not super necessary unless your course requires a certain minimum download and upload capability. Even if your course has such a requirement, the recommendation would be to go wired with a lan cable and buy an adapter if needed. I did not go much in to the fine details of the many Wi-Fi 5/AC versions as they are for the most part backwards compatible, so you should not run into any issues.
8. Conclusion You'll notice that I did not talk about battery (and battery life) much if at all here. This is because there are too many factors influencing battery life such as the type of CPU and GPU. Therefore please do your own research on whether a laptop's battery life is suitable for you. I also did not talk about weight. This is because weight is subjective as some people are ok lugging around 2-3kg of laptop for the performance it can provide. I also did not provide recommendations as these are subjective and I wanted to try to keep this guide as objective as possible. I am also lazy.
In general just look at your course requirements and recommendations. Then look at the info in this guide and see if you can get something with more value for money based on what you've understood from this. For example, in a game development course, you are often recommended heavy gaming laptops. However, with some searching of your own, you could get a Dell XPS 15 which would be slightly lighter while having a dGPU for heavy graphics tasks and longer battery life.
Also, DO NOT TRY TO FUTURE PROOF YOUR LAPTOP. Laptops get outdated fairly quickly and batteries are not easily replaceable, so don't try future proofing your laptop by getting the best specs now.

Hey all! Considering a new (scratch&dent) Dell G16. I can get it with the following specs for about 1k + tax (with some discounts from a friend).

I have a current HP Envy that runs casual games great (it has 16g ram and an i7) but it falters with more advanced games (plus the 256g storage is full), so I’m looking to upgrade!
I don’t know if these are good specs or if I need a 3060 from NVIDIA or if the 3050 (which is quite a bit less) if sufficient, and if 512gb would be enough for storage instead. Looking to spend around $1,000 USD.
I do medium-level (maybeeee?) gaming (Like Sims with mods, Minecraft, Stardew Valley, plus I want to do some heavier ones like Hogwarts Legacy and some indie open world ones that make my computer lag like crazy lol). Otherwise, my computer is just for light photo/video editing and some work (like MS Office and web meetings).
Appreciate any help, opinions on this purchase, or other laptop suggestions!!
