2012

• He dated a girl called Gemma Janes, who was 17/18 years old, when he was 23/24. Here's a pic of them together on her Instagram, posted in January 2013. She was still 17 - her birthday is May 11 1995. The age of consent in England is 16, so this wasn't illegal. Immoral, however? I think yes. She posted him a lot, btw. It wasn't just a one-off pic. Like here and here and here. She was also in the band's music video for the song Chocolate (Aug 2013). She simulates/appears to be nude. She was 18. He was 24.

2013

• Normally, I wouldn't include something like this, because it feels like a small issue and too prevalent to actually single him/his band out, but given some of the criticism he makes of hip hop culture later on (and how he pats his own back on his own "feminism"), I decided to come back and include it.

• The song was part of their August 2013 album called The 1975, and features lyrics about a 17 year old girl "seducing" him. Reminder, he had met his current girlfriend at the time when she was 17. These are some of the lyrics:

2014

• In the spring of 2014 they launched on a long tour of nightclubs in North America. While in Canada, he did an interview with IX Daily, a (now defunct) website dedicated to indie subculture. The interviewers were two girls.

Interviewer: What is your biggest fear and biggest vice?
Matty: These are quite heavy questions for girls dressed as you two.
Interviewer: I'm a little bit offended...
Matty: You're offended by that?
Interviewer: Mhm (smiling awkwardly)
Matty: D'you know how many people I meet every single day? D'you know how many people interview me every single day?
Interviewer: Yes, a lot.
Matty: (pointing to both of them) You look nice for the interview. You've made an effort. You're, like, a pretty girl... I'm gonna have certain stereotypes. I don't meant offend you. At all. But the choker thing is kind of in, I see. I do like that.

• In August 2014, Matty goes on a tirade explaining why he always slags off religion, including islam. Culminating with this tweet:

Isis are a threat to Muslims and Arab countries around the world right now. Our religion is against killing innocent people, it’s haram.

I also got angry because he has a huge following and some people are obviously going to side with him (trust me they’ve been in my mentions all day) and they’re just going to agree with him when he doesn’t have the facts and he’s so obviously not educated on this subject.
He’s constantly tweeting that we should respect people who have different religions then tweets things like fuck god then tweets that religion is an idea THEN says its faith so he’s all over the place.

• At some point in 2014, Matty dates Halsey, whose debut EP Room 93 (released in October 2014) is about him. Halsey was born in September 1994, which means she and Matty dated when she was 18 and he was 25.
• In August 2014, while the band is performing at Lollapalooza, he allegedly kisses a 15 year old girl. Video of the accusation. In another video, the same person explains it happened in Chicago.
• Someone unearthed a lot of tweets from fans talking about Matty kissing underage fans, some of them date back years and also reference Lollapalooza. Here's a link to the last tweet, which includes a video of the fan talking about it and a video where you can hear Matty ask if she wants "a proper" kiss. He doesn't ask how old she is.

• In December 2014 he tweets this. He has never apologized.

2015

• It's not clear when exactly they met, but we know that by 2015, he was dating his girlfriend Gabriella Brooks, who in 2015 was 18/19 (born May 1996). Matty was 25/26. It's now the third confirmed relationship Matty has with a teenager while in his mid 20s. And teenagers that are either minors or barely adults, at that. Add to this the weird underage kissing...

2017

• In April, he retweets Islamophobic tweets by a Muslim hate group, then unretweets when he's called out. Here's a summary by his own subreddit.

• In November he gives an interview with The Fader where he says the following:

One of the problems is the youth of hip-hop. At the moment, with SoundCloud rap, it's become a bit of a drug-taking competition, and that happened in rock and roll. Those things get weeded out the longer those things exist. The reason misogyny doesn't happen in rock and roll anymore is because it's a vocabulary that existed for so long is that it got weeded out. It still exists in hip-hop because [the genre] is so young, but it'll stop. That's why you have this moment with young black men — Kanye-aged men, as well — talking about their relationship with themselves, which is a big step forward for hip-hop. Drake, for example. But then they'll be like, "But I still got bitches." The scene's relationship with women hasn't caught up to its relationship with itself, but that's something that will happen.

This bit of me talking in an interview reads as patronising, uninformed and reductive. And to be fair it is. And I’d like to apologise….

What the Data is saying? Inflation is Re-accelerating!!!:

Asking rents climbed by $12, or 0.6%, from March to April, according to the latest edition of the Zillow Observed Rent Index (ZORI). That brings the index to $2,018, for a cumulative 1.3% increase since its recent low point in January, at $1,991. The 0.6% monthly increase is slightly smaller than the typical April increase of 0.7%, averaged over data from 2016 to 2019, suggesting that today’s growth is still driven mainly by seasonal factors, and that overall leasing conditions are still somewhat cool for this time of year. Typical asking rents at the national level now stand at $2,018, which is 5.3% higher than one year ago, and 0.5% higher than the peak of $2,008 observed in September 2022. That annual growth rate is now down almost 12 percentage points from the peak growth rate of 16.9%, the record-high pace reached in February 2022.

• 'Typical rent' is the highest ever at $2018 per month
• April is the biggest month-to-month increase since August and still appears to be growing

For the Fed governor's above 'looking to see the data', the biggest component of CPI and PCE inflation is still raging from inflation.

The core PCE price index (excludes food and energy and is the Fed's favorite inflation index and the one they base policy after) re-accelerated in April as well.

AAA: Sacramento 4, Tacoma 1

• Sacramento led wire-to-wire in this game, and the pitching staff led the way. Led by Keaton Winn with his best game of the year, Sacramento held Tacoma scoreless until the 9th inning. They took the lead in the first with a bases-loaded walk to Ford Proctor, and then really put in some space with a 2-run Ricardo Genovés double in the 5th.
• Winn went 4.0 scoreless innings, allowing just a season-low one hit and one walk, striking out four. It’s the third start Winn has had without allowing any runs. With this game, Winn has 45 strikeouts to1 9 walks in 37.1 innings this season.
• Reliever Chris Wright went 1.1 scoreless innings in relief, allowing just one hit and no walks. Wright has been doing better at limiting hits, and at a .264 batting average allowed, it’s the lowest it’s been since April 24th, after which it spiked to .385.
• Luis Matos led the team in hitting, going 3-for-5. Matos now has three 3-hit games over the last ten, although his batting average has dropped from .357 to .340 over that span. He now has three doubles and two triples over 12 games in Triple-A.

• DH Colton Welker went 2-for-5, with two stolen bases. The steals are his first of the season, and actually his first since 2019 (He’s played 72 games from 2021 through 2023). Welker has a batting line of .292/.410/.344 on the season, with 20 walks to 21 strikeouts.
• Will Wilson was 2-for-4 with a double. It’s his eighth double of the season, to go along with six home runs. He has a batting line of .213/.288/.367 after 51 games, with 18 walks to 51 strikeouts.
• Shortstop Tyler Fitzgerald went 2-for-5 with a stolen base. He now has hits in 12 of the last 13 games, going 18-for-52 (.346) with four doubles, a triple, and three home runs over that run. He’s got a batting line of .309/.385/.544 at Triple-A.
• Catcher Ricardo Genovés went 1-for-4 with the 2-run double, his sixth of the season, and got caught stealing on his first steal attempt of the season (and since 2021). He has a batting line of .268/.368/.392 over 32 games this season.

• The Squirrels will soon get a new player, as Jimmy Glowenke has gotten the call up to Richmond. Glowenke earned it after going .313/.413/.542 in 26 games at Eugene, playing all over the infield.

AA: Erie 11, Richmond 1

• Yeah…this game was just a mess. Erie beat up starter Ryan Murphy and reliever Wil Jensen to the tune of ten runs over the first four innings. Meanwhile, Richmond managed just two hits (but also six walks) on the day, though one was a home run, so it wasn’t a shutout.
• Left fielder Carter Williams had the only big hit of the day, hitting his 5th home run with Richmond on a 1-for-3 day. Over 28 games in Richmond, Williams has a .231/.290/.407 line over 28 games, with five home runs and a double, and Williams also had one home run in three games with Eugene.

• The other hit came off the bat of Riley Mahan, who was 1-for-4. Mahan is 5-for-13 with a double over his last three games, raising his batting average from .190 to .209.
• Vaun Brown was actually the only Squirrel to get on base multiple times, going 0-for-2 with two walks to one strikeout. In seven games at Richmond, he now has 12 strikeouts to four walks, with a .308 batting average.
• It was another rough game for Murphy, who gave up six runs, five earned, on six hits and a walk with 3.1 innings, with just two strikeouts. Murphy is giving up hits to the tune of .309, and has a 6.15 ERA with 31 strikeouts to 19 walks in 33.2 innings.

High-A: Vancouver 4, Eugene 2

• This game started off well, with Eugene scoring two runs in the first innings off a double steal with an error, and an Adrian Sugastey RBI single. But the offense stalled from there, as Vancouver knocked in four runs, three on a big home run in the 4th.
• The big day belonged to Ghordy Santos, who reached back to the Mendoza Line by going 3-for-4 with a double and getting to .200. It’s the first 3-hit game of the season for Santos, who is batting .245 in May.
• Making his High-A debut was Carter Howell, playing left field. He got a single in his first High-A at-bat, picked up his first High-A steal in the double steal that led to McCray scoring, and would score his first High-A run on an Adrian Sugastey single. The undrafted free agent hit .337/.398/.500 over 39 games with San Jose to earn his promotion.
• Grant McCray went 0-for-2 with two walks, with a steal, his 21st of the season. With the walks, he now has 27 to 65 strikeouts in 44 games this season, raising his on-base percentage to .343.
• Starting pitcher Matt Mikulski gave up four runs, three earned, in 3.0 innings, allowing three hits, a walk, and two HBP, while striking out three. It’s been a very difficult May for Mikulski, who has a 9.42 over five games this month, with 20 strikeouts to 13 walks in 14.1 innings.
• In relief, Ben Madison had another strong game, allowing just a walk in 3.0 innings, while striking out three. That gives him 40 strikeouts to 16 walks in 24.0 innings, and has allowed just 11 hits on the season, for a .133 average allowed even despite a 4.13 ERA.

Low-A: San Jose 4, Fresno 3 (10 innings, from Monday)

• San Jose fought off a big comeback from Fresno to pick up this win late. Dilan Rosario knocked in all the San Jose’s regulation runs, with an RBI single in the 2nd, and a 2-run single in the 4th. But Fresno came back with three runs in the 6th inning to tie it up. But San Jose would end it in the 10th, with an Onil Perez RBI single.

• Thomas Gavello was at catcher, and went 2-for-4 with a double, the only San Jose extra-base hit. Gavello now has seven doubles to go with a triple and seven home runs on 34 games. He has a batting line of .273/.426/.521, with 16 walks to 45 strikeouts.
• Left fielder Tanner O’Tremba went 2-for-4, playing left field, and got caught stealing. O’Tremba has gone 6-for-15 (.400) over his last four games with two triples, and now has been caught stealing once, but has six steals on seven attempts.
• Dilan Rosario was 2-for-4 with a pair of singles, with three RBI. In 15 games with San Jose, Rosario has a .220/.316/.240 batting line with a double, the double being his only extra-base hit of the season so far.

• Hayden Wynja had his best start and appearance of the season, going 4.0 innings, allowing only a walk with four strikeouts. It was his longest appearances of the season, and the first time he hadn’t allowed any hits in more than an inning of work. Wynja has 37 strikeouts to 11 walks in 26.0 innings.
