2023.06.02 14:50 Carneliancrystal AITA 25f for “provoking” my BF 26m
We’ve been together for 4 years with the last year being on and off. Once I moved out, after a month we were back in communication and “working” on our relationship, his words! The weekend I was supposed to meet with him and discuss our relationship I got sick, this was a very traumatic time for me, Dr. couldn't figure out what was wrong. I've always been a slim girl with my height weighing about 150 lbs. When I left the hospital I was 111lbs. During these 2 months, I lost my job, and both my grandfathers. While going through this he never came to check on me, I never got any calls unless I called him. When I was feeling a little better I went to our old apt to get the rest of my things, I guess he forgot I said I was coming by that weekend. Even though I had a key I still knocked when I got there. While I'm there another woman with a key walks in and that's how I found out why he switched up from wanting to fix things to going ghost when I needed him the most. I couldn't believe how much I'd been there for him and he could replace me in a month.
Fast forward 6 months, to the present day. I moved back in with him. I needed to save plus where my mom lives there aren't many well-paying jobs. I was sleeping on a mattress on the floor in my mother's narcissistic BFs house who didn't want me there while they both went through my things while I would be at work. I saved enough to move but I knew it would be hard trying to come up with time and other streams of income while paying rent. So after 3 months of begging and pleading his case, I decided to move back to the apt where it was my couch, tv, bar cart, etc... Things that I bought. This brings us here, his excuse for not checking on me and being with that girl is that he was single. Lol, he's technically right, but it doesn't stop the hurt or the feeling of betrayal, I guess a month and a half was enough to forget 3 years, oh well. Since he's been a man of his word and I guess in his way trying to be a better man than he was before until... I saw him post a meme referring to girls with a certain type of dog, the complete opposite of the dog I have, and wondered who he was talking about, I asked him on his ig story when he posted and didn't get a response. Later that night I went through the phone. Smh. I found the old messages of the girl I feel he chose over me and you can only guess what I saw. Not only did she have the exact dog that was in the post I saw messages of him saying “I meant nothing to him” how I'm weird B for popping up at his house the day I found out about her and so much more! I was triggered! I woke him up out of his sleep at 11:30 pm and was pretty much going off about the subliminal he had posted about her and the dog. He tried to manhandle me to get me to stop going off and slapped me and pushed me to the ground. He apologized but said it was my fault for how I came at him. AITA?

2023.06.02 14:49 PatrickMcEvoyHalston Love for "There are Doors"
It's about a guy who lost a mother who may... as diagnosed by Laura, have been his best friend, but may also have simultaneously been a predator, someone who kept him all to herself (and thus like "WizardKnight's" Able, someone who delayed his further development?). The narrative works to help him save face, as he couldn't bear to face real truths. So he obviously was in the sanitorium for desiring a sex change into a woman, for this would be a way to incorporate the lost mother back into him, just like for Severian, incorporating Thecla was his way to incorporate his lost mother inside him. But since this would fragment his slim sense of self-esteem, make him feel less a man, less structured, the narrative allows him the face-saving reality that, no, he was there for alcoholism. IT REALLY IS HIM that seeks a missing masculinity, however -- and this fact is really made near overt in how he has the old European, the man's man, Klamm, admire how he punches North straight in the nose -- but this is posited into North when he lusts after the boxer Joe, who's "strong as a couple bulls," a surprising development when it happens in the text because North otherwise had been portrayed as a kind of emblem of terrorizing masculinity who by himself could disrupt the alternative world's otherwise assured matriarchal society: he's this text's bullysome, Stanley Kowalski, the, himself, already-a-bull. (The overt anger he feels towards his mother is mostly displaced onto North as well. Not entirely, however, for he allows himself some when he sums up his impression of the old woman whose textual role is to refuse him.) There's a sense that to get Laura back to him, he's going to have to get her from her current partner, Klamm, who pretends she's his daughter. There's a sense here that Green's nearest double in Wolfe's fiction surfaces near the end of his career, with "Borrowed Man's" Ern, who has the same sort of relationship with that novel's overt exemplum of female-power-disrupting masculinity, Dr. Fevre, as he begs one his daughters-that-are-there-for-sex off of him. (Mind you, though in this case he doesn't beg for it, "Peace's" Weer does collect sex off of another man's teenage daughter as well. Maybe his main protagonists hope that through sex with the girls they're also acquiring some closer proximity to the particular Father who lent them to him? Maybe it's not only about the girls themselves, but about gaining some of he-men they carry in them, via sexual or biological ties?)
Laura shames him at the end. Informs him that to her, she's just a cute dog... one of a number she might admire briefly but then lose interest in. This doesn't work to repulse, but rather gets him excited, gets him even more desiring of her (there's a lot of this in Wolfe, no? Women who inform their mates that they'll use them and dump them, with the hero becoming excited by the prospect? It's Able's relationship to Disiri as well, however this gets corrected in the end when Able finally learns to reverse the power-dynamic between them and learns to call her.). I think there's a sense that rather than critique him here for having no sense of self-respect, that what we should do is note that he's doing the right thing. He seems in need to finally force something upon her, rather than be the one who is used. This.... this registering, this better-focusing, would amount to a recognition that he wasn't just the sad puppy she had taken him for. And he gets this. He forces a change in mind in her, he earns it, and this is a recognition from her of his genuine masculinity. For the first time she makes him feel a man, someone a woman might seek out for his own masculinity.
Of all the three lovers we hear of of Laura, Green has the least traditionally manly of occupations. Klamm I think is a president's advisor, the other is a captain of a ship, and Green works as a department store clerk selling furniture to old women. Green's battle with the old woman to reclaim a desk he sold to her feels a bit like he's engaging a more serious battle as well. He calls her a bitch I think at one point, but he does make as strong a case he can to get the desk from her. She won't do it at first. Emphatically, no way... but he nevertheless does have some impact on her, and she eventually changes her mind and gives it to him. There's a sense, if you will, of Peace in this book, compromise, a working solution, between parties ostensibly widely apart, not just the war of realms between North's "American" "masculinity" vs. the alternative realm's goddessian matriarchy.
The teenage doll of Laura he keeps by his side puts this protagonist into the company of many of other of Wolfe's main heroes who keeps some teenage lady doll by him. Most times we won't notice they amount to the same, but it's what's going on in "Latro" and in "Sorcerer's House" (with Winkel, the fox)... and possibly in "Land Across," with the hand he keeps in his pocket (and possibly in "New Sun," with Dorcas being a revived doll, according to Agia, and Baldander's being tended to by a living doll). I found some sympathy for his keeping her by him, this talking girl-doll. It's so overtly sad... like "Free, Live Free's" clown who sleeps in a coffin is, or even perhaps how "New Sun's" Hethor is, with his sleeping with a doll, is, or how "Soldier of Sidon's" magician who keeps a doll is. I think because it shows some ability to actually admit to what other's would call a perversity, a need for a steadying fetish, even if ridiculed for it. (If anyone ever argues there's a million miles of distance between some of Wolfe's overt villain "weirdoes," like the transexual Eurkyles, who exults in his new female body, and his heroes, don't believe. Usually they exist in the text to "take on" what the hero himself feels inclined towards but can't admit owing to shame. In Latro's case, he doesn't need as much the sexual transformation to reclaim his mother because the text keeps fostering the Mother back onto him; he isn't as lonely for her.)
So he's normal for me in that... because he's a clerk (rather than, say, "home fires's" Skip who's a great lawyer, or "Land Across's" Grafton who's a notable, successful travel writer, or "Borrowed Man's" Ern who was a successful mystery writer) who sells stuff to old ladies, because he, rather than North, is so obviously the one who desires masculinity from other Real Men (and, with his viscously attacking the old woman by calling her a bitch, is really the one who has a score to settle with women), because, rather than hide this from us, has the woman he says he loves admit she chose him because his best friend was his mother, that is, because he was a vulnerable mother's boy, he's one of the least armoured of Wolfe's heroes. Other protagonists in Wolfe may carry some of the same attributes, but they arrive in text better armoured -- for example Silk fears he's a milksot, a mamma's boy, too, but he's described as someone who was so broad-shouldered Remora imagined that this tough neighbourhood he was dispatched to would have, in him, met their match, and Blood... the very formidable man from the streets, pulls back from him upon first meet because he sensed he was considerable trouble.
He's not, to refer to Stephen Saperstein Frug's complaint about "WizardKnight's" Able, a Mary Sue.
I wont' talk here about Green's Redface episode, but it is there in the text.

2023.06.02 14:45 RustBeltChic Mold underneath window ledges
When spring started, I noticed a musty smell. It seems that most of the north side window frames smell musty and then I noticed they had these mold spots under the ledge (on bottom):
https://imgur.com/a/fBtpZnk I cleaned them with a borax solution and they came off, but I'm still smelling a musty smell. 2nd floor bedrooms and 1st floor living room (though not as much). All the windows were replaced 5 years ago. Dehumidifier is running in the basement and AC is on now (we had whole house fan on before).
What would be causing this? Any suggestions?

2023.06.02 14:27 resurrective Chapter 20 - What is love?
“HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA!!!”
A laugh, what does it mean for a person? A sign of amusement? A mark of contentment? Maybe, a reaction to a quirky comment or action? Perhaps…
But now, all that echoed throughout the burning lands was a guffaw of despair and torment. It belonged to Eve, the future queen of the entire Confederation of Demons. And right now, no trace of royal dignity was to be seen within her. The woman was pulling her white hair, kneeling in her sphere at the sight of the mass-murder.
The snow of death, the sprinkled ash of white and purple fell upon the ground, taking hundreds of lives. Gramgrim, the strongest and the fiercest formation underneath the authority of Me-ua now perished like slugs under the salt. Orcs, dogs, trolls, deer, lions, crows, fiends, mind-flayers, tigers, boars, even a cult of bulls-necromancers – the brigade included many different races, men and women of different backgrounds and upbringings, their tamed beasts and familiars, slaves and draft animals. Looking at the southern organizations, consisting of various Ma-zok tribes was always fascinating. Especially, when none of them could withstand the divine plague, sent as a godly punishment for defiling the holy land of kokuyoku.
Was there any way to save themselves? Yes – they simply never should’ve come to the village. Now, though? Well, not even Panakea’s blessing could save Keyaruga from death, so why should any of them survive?
Such was Eve’s wrath; such was her sorrow, enshrined upon this wretched world.
“Fascinating.,,” Keyaruga muttered, looking underneath him. He couldn’t help but to feel glee. After all, hundreds upon hundreds of high-leveled demons perished, blessing the whole party of five with new levels to enjoy (or hate, in Ellen’s case). Strange, though. Normally, a party couldn’t be larger than four people (not that a mortal had control over it anyway; people could travel in however big assemblies, as they pleased, yet experience was earned only by parties of four), but the group stuck together pretty well. Was it another of Caladrius’ gifts, she just didn’t bother to share? Well, whatever the case…
“I know, it’s not a reason for joy… but we can definitely use all that power in our future battles.” Freia mused with a trace of regret in her voice.
“Uh-huh. Good thing to get stronger before we go after the demon king.” Setsuna supported, trapped in a conflict between joy at reaching her new threshold of power and fury for losing Visou.
“Of course this would happen… This always happens with those people and places I care for or love… I shouldn’t have taken this damned bracelet…” Keyaruga growled, looking at the yorkama talisman on his right wrist. Yet, when he was about to rip it away…
“Don’t do that.” …Ellen stopped him. For the first time in this nightmarish day she was thankful for her new powers, as they allowed her to stop her ‘brother’ from an act of utter stupidity. “It’s not your fault. Look, they came here, seeking Hakuo’s rival! Your sympathy has nothing to do with that, stop dealing in superstitions!” The Apostle of Caladrius attempted to reassure the lad. But alas…
“It’s my fault. Like Visou… like Alban… like Karman… It’s all been my fault.” …the man just wouldn’t listen.
“No… it was mine…” The crimson-haired cutie whispered, yet once again – no reaction. “Hey, brother, see that breached wall behind Mil’s house? I see traces there. Could you, maybe?..”
“Yes… Oh, Ellen, thank you!” Only when she pointed out the obvious, did the man finally wake up from his trance. Just in time to hear…
“KILL!!! KILL THEM ALL!!!” …this. Eve still couldn’t really master her raging emotions, and even the fact that no creature remained alive in the burning village stopped her in any way.
“Hm, I am saddened to inform you, little one, that there is nobody to slay here. And even if there were, I am unable to maintain the offence. I need to feed and regain my strength now.” Caladrius admonished, descending on the earth. “However, down the north road, you may find other survivors. Just make haste; they do not have much time.” The harbinger of plague informed the group, putting the white sphere on the ground. The barrier had faded just as all poisonous ash did as well, coincidentally.
Keyaruga, Setsuna, Eve, Freia, Ellen, Kelly, Patty – all could finally walk properly again. Not really a big perk, when all you’re finding yourself among the still burning remains of a ruined village, though.
“O pluvia clemens, benedic nobis tua gratia recreativa.” Fortunately, they had the Hero of Magic at their side. And so, the first thing Freia did was to cast a simple rain spell. A critically important move, especially when their raptors were getting panicked by the fires.
“Now, if you excuse me.” And what would horrify any sentient being was how gruesomely filthy Caladrius turned out to be. The very first thing she did when the party had finally landed was to grab some dead slimy bastard, and just swallow him whole, like some sort of a pelican.
“Hey! Hey! Hey! He-e-ey!!! The hell are you doing?!” The younger princess yawped, consumed by her anger. Not because she was disgusted, though… “You fucking munched him with all that armor and shit?! What’re you even thinking of?! We need that!”
“I do not care, Apostle. Unless you are willing to strip them yourself, your whining is of little concern to me.” The deity replied dismissively. Even if her plague faded without a trace, the diseased corpses were still a delicacy for Caladrius.
And here I thought Ellen was slandering her about this part. Thought it was just a nice joke. Apparently, not, Keyaruga mused, witnessing the same vile spectacle as his girls did.
“Well, I’m willing as hell! You can buy an entire village for one of those!” The young lady snarled, turning one of the corpses over, just to untie the leashes that held a cuirass in place. When people die, their rectum can’t hold feces anymore. The stench of death, dung, decay, the earth, wet and softened by the rain – so much filth among the corpses, and yet, the warlady felt overjoyed looting the corpses of their fallen enemies before tossing their naked bodies toward her hungry patron.
“Keyaruga, I think, we should…” Freia softly spoke, pointing at the breach on the northern side. She wasn’t overly enthusiastic about defiling the dead, so maybe…
“No, I’m going alone.” Sadly, the healer wouldn’t let anyone accompany him in this quest. Even the golden egg had to leave his back right now. He knew who he was pursuing. And what he would do to his enemies, once he’d reached them. “Setsuna, Freia, hold this, and stay here, and watch out for Eve, and… Well, you may also help Ellen with looting.” The lad spoke, completely ignoring the rain that fell upon his head.
“Uh-huh, got it.” The gray-haired girl agreed, putting the straps holding their unborn ‘child’ on her back. Strangely enough, the ice warrior was more than happy with pillaging the corpses. With her arms being covered in the frozen gauntlets, the girl could easily strip the fallen brigadiers to Ellen’s obvious delight.
“I… think I should bury the villagers.” Freia, on the other hand, grabbed a shovel somewhere. Instead of defiling the dead, she wanted to properly inter the remains of the poor black-wings… until their bodies were eaten by their own god.
“Whatever you wish… Just don’t forget to cut off their wings.” The man ordered, tossing away everything from Kelly’s saddle. He needed speed, not sustainability.
“I see… feathers… magic catalysts…” The sorceress instantly understood what the hero wanted from the fallen villagers. To be honest, that sort of cruelty paled compared to what their enemies sometimes allowed themselves. It didn’t make the pink-haired girl any happier, though.
“Wait!” Finally, just as Keyaruga was about to climb on his reptile steed, he got a companion in the form of the queen-to-be. “I’m… going with you!..” She spoke wearily, yet her tone wouldn’t brook any denial.
“You shouldn’t, Eve. You’re too drained as it is, I can’t risk you now.” That didn’t work on the new hero, though. The red-eyed lad knew, what kind of atrocities he was about to commit. What’s worse – he was looking forward for them.
“No… You know I can’t be killed that easily.” The white-haired woman insisted, allowing herself to climb in the saddle no matter what Keyaruga wanted. “Also, those are my people we’re talking about.”
“Alright…” The man nodded, giving one last brief look at what travesty was currently occuring on this holy ground: hundreds of corpses, two enthusiastic looter-girls stripping them before feeding them to the goddess that was primarily supposed to guard this place from such tragedies, and the strongest mage in the world, cutting off wings with her wavy dagger. All gave him a brief look. “Girls, lady Caladrius, you stay here! The raptor we’re taking will go faster carrying only two of us.” The healer admonished, silently praising himself for not including the plague incarnate in the ranks of his lovers. Wouldn’t that be awkward?
“Uh-huh. Good luck, you two.” Setsuna waved her armored hand, happily proceeding with robbing the corpses.
“Yeah… thanks. We’ll need it.”
…
The forest had been defiled. A trace of bodies, both kokuyoku and their ruthless persecutors, marked a path for the hero and his queen. Faster! Faster! The man smacked his reptile with his heels, struck against the ribs, pulled every bit of speed from poor Kelly. So much so, that even wild scavengers, who came to feast on the corpses, just fled from the massive raptor. And yet, it still wasn’t enough…
“Hey, Keyaruga!” Eve spoke, holding onto the hero’s torso with her trembling arms. “Why are you even helping us? Why… do you even bother, if they die no matter what we do?” The queen-to-be asked melancholically. Right now, she tried to find at least some meaning in her existence, just to not fall into a pit of nihilism and despair.
“It’s because… I have power. I can make a difference. And because I want to do so.” The red-haired lad responded, navigating a path through the woods with his jade eye. His status elevated him above the rest, giving the man many abilities, some considered to be… unnatural. For example, he could easily alleviate Kelly’s fatigue from constant galloping.
“Power, yes?.. The onslaught… it began when Caladrius was playing with us… But instead of putting an end to this hell, she’d go on, and on, and on… And even when we got out, she never told us what was going on. When I asked her to bless you, I was scared… and discomforted, and… whatever other words you have for discomfort. I thought it was because of the trial… Thought it was over… Then… I looked at myself, my own actions, here and in the past.” Eve shared the burden of her guilt with Keyaruga. The white-haired woman couldn’t help but blame herself for everything that happened. If she didn’t ignore her feelings, if she had checked on her wings a little earlier, if she… “If I… If I just could…”
“Was that what you saw in your challenge?” The healer wondered, trying to get his companion out of this ruinous obsession over what nobody could prevent, or even predict.
“Ugm… Who did you meet there?” Did he fail? No, not really. But instead of giving him an answer, the queen-to-be countered with a question of her own.
“Many, many people… I don’t want to talk about it now.” Unfortunately, though, Keyaruga just couldn’t bring himself to reveal what he saw, heard… did with his own hands.
“I… I see…” Eve murmured, getting a message from the lad’s depressed tone. He too carried much pain in his soul, and that vortex of suffering could never be dissipated by shutting down just some of his emotions. To completely silence this pain, Keyaruga would have to become something else entirely, something inhuman, incapable of either hate or love.
“More important, Eve, I want you to sharpen your senses. Maybe, you can trace magic better than me.” The hero suggested, as his right eye rolled around in his socket. The forest was wide and thick, and his sight wasn’t as all-seeing as he’d like it to be.
“I’ll try.” Eve whispered, trying to focus her attention on the ambient mana. Maybe, if she was just diligent enough, she could trace her living brethren? Maybe, all wasn’t lost just yet? Maybe… “You know, Keyaruga, you’re not the guilty one in all of this… If Mil didn’t let everyone in, if I wasn’t saved by your goddess, if our goddess wasn’t just like Ellen says she is… than none of this horror would have happened.” The lady in red deadpanned cautiously. Now that she knew of her ‘future’, how it might’ve been without this self-conflicted man at her side, the kokuyoku scion could clearly tell – her grandfather was just like Keyaruga and Ellen, he wanted the best for his people… and that turned Visou into a deathtrap. After all, Hakuo wouldn’t have sent Gramgrim here if Cornar had come to him with the valuable bounty that was the black-wings’ princess.
“I’m sorry…” The healer uttered, still unaware, just how much of a monster Eve’s first husband really was, and how much she owed him for showing, how the love should even look like in the first place.
“You really shouldn’t be, Keyaruga.” The black-winged prodigy responded sorrowfully. She felt the lad’s distress: it was in his voice, his posture, his way of breathing… “You can’t just carry the burden for everyone else. I tried… and I failed.” Eve spoke, trying to dissuade her defender from thinking he was able to hold the whole world on his shoulders, when, in reality, it was simply impossible. “Don’t do that. You’ll break.” This calm phrase was spoken serenely, and yet, it was a cry. A cry for help, for understanding, for letting go.
“We don’t need Caladrius.” But Keyaruga just couldn’t release himself from this burden. Even now, when riding over the forest floor, covered in disfigured corpses, most of which were charred whole, seemingly by lightning, the man couldn’t stop thinking about Eve, her troubles, the tragic price her ultimate power might demand from her.
“Why?” The lady in red asked, attempting to follow the new line of conversation which her companion had turned to. Why would he even be scared of it? Didn’t Ellen bargain two free casts for her? Ellen… How could this capricious princess be able to extort such a valuable gift from the harbinger of plague? If Eve had done something like this in the first world… then there wouldn’t be the second one.
“She’s… too frivolous, arrogant, she’s thousands years old, yet all I see is an old snobby child with no backbone. We can’t be sure she’ll maintain her promise, and I really, really don’t want to see you wither away.” The man said with that seemingly careless voice of his. “If you need someone dead, I’ll be there for you.” He added grimly then. Eve was too soft, even now, she still couldn’t deal with the moral compromises necessary, and there were going to be a lot more of them on the way toward the Obsidian Throne.
“Hah… You really do want me to fall in love with you?” The queen-to-be noted somewhat playfully. Her mood was still sombered, but even so, there was always a light in the darkness.
“Heh, aren’t you already? I can tell – you’ve changed, so that you could keep up with me, especially in the bed.” Keyaruga followed this little funny road, and retaliated with a joke of his own. But… was it really a joke, though?
“Yes… Yes, I have.” Apparently, not. “I can’t force you to become your old self, but I had a chance to change myself.” Eve explained, lowering her head. She couldn’t keep up with the man last night – he was just too big for her. That’s why, the girl had to go, the queen-to-be had to become a woman, and fast.
And so, there could be only one thing to ask at this point.
“So, do you want to fuck, once this is over?” The hero unceremoniously inquired from his companion. After all, they were already past all those earlier insults and attempts at shaming from Eve’s side.
“Yes, I do! I really, really do. I want you to ravage me, so I wouldn’t go mad.” The Me-ua kahul responded with a plea of sorrow, hate, loathing, and regret. There wasn’t anything enticing in this request, but… it was so humane.
“Of course. I will.” The man promised. Despite everything, despite this day supposedly belonging to Ellen and Setsuna, he wouldn’t refuse her, no matter what. And Eve felt that resolve in the man.
“Also, I won’t stop using Caladrius. We need her, Keyaruga. We need her… to establish our authority. Then… maybe, I won’t have to lose anyone again.” The queen-to-be spoke wearily. She wanted to reach Hakuo, wished to murder this monster once and for all with her own hands, instead of waiting till some disease finishes him. She wanted to bury this king’s legacy once and for all, so that his blood would never poison her life ever again. Eve Reese desired revenge. And Keyaruga would never feel worthy of discouraging his queen. And yet…
“Alright. But you have to promise me one thing – one time. She gave us only two times, and I don’t want you to overreach any further. Everything else I’ll deal with personally. It won’t make a difference to me anyway, my hands are already dirtied enough as it is.” Keyaruga all but demanded. The gods had put them in a tight little cage, where only those who kill more than others, were worthy of wielding great power. Right now, the man wasn’t sure his party was enough to challenge Hakuo’s rule. Even Eve, drained by Caladrius, managed to overpower her ‘heroic’ adversaries. Too bad they left her exhausted for Keyaru to finish the job. Speaking of that…
“But… why would you even bother? Don’t you just want to… make another redo? To fix everything, to save those who you couldn’t save?” The lady in red asked the lad. He was never too secretive about the circumstances he was in, and how the world ended up as it is. Still, each time he spoke of that, pain and loss broke through his armor of callousness.
“No. Just as you said, I have people to live for now. Freia, Setsuna, Ellen, you, Eve – I can’t imagine my life without you. And if I just flee into the past, then what’s even the point of us having this little chat right now?” The healer quarried in response. He was sure of what he was talking about now. Or, rather, trying to convince himself and Eve of that.
“Haa… Right…” For better or worse, the woman just exhaled and dropped the topic. To believe it would mean disregarding Keyaruga’s deep painful wounds, any further prying risked opening them up again. “I think we’ve got something.” Fortunately, right in that moment, Eve noticed a track, something to spot her brethren, where the trail of bodies had just ended.
“What? Where?” Keyaruga asked, now looking around.
“To the left from here. I feel my brethren coming to me from this side. They’re… fighting. And dying.” As the lady in red spoke, pointing in the direction the flow of souls was coming from, the rider pulled the reigns to stop his steed. He then jumped off the saddle.
“Shit, I must hurry!” The hero snarled, pulling the saber out of its sheath. A contradicting statement, seeing as he would be much faster mounted. But no… “Keep your eye on Kelly! I can’t risk the two of you!”
“You want to go alone?” The woman astounded, reaching for her companion. Alas, he never faced her.
“Yes! Our enemies are strong, Eve. And I’m not sure if I can properly protect you. Stay here; cover me with your magic.” Keyaruga urged sternly. He wasn’t a healer, nor a competent defender whatsoever. The hero was a murderer, and nothing could convince him more than the trial he completed just an hour ago.
“Hold on! I won’t let you go alone.” Nevertheless, the kokuyoku scion too wasn’t the same after that challenge. She flapped her wings, and numerous black spheres left her feathers. One, two… ten, twenty… Twenty-three shades now flew around the man, ready to assist him in murdering whoever threatened their kin. “They will protect you.”
“Ah… thanks.” The red-haired man uttered, looking at the fallen black-wings. Right now, they rather reminded him of insects with the way they dashed around. “We’ll be on our way, then.” Still, it didn’t stop him from getting ready to sprint forward to save whoever was left of the kokuyoku-zok and to punish their oppressors.
“Promise you’ll be back! Promise you’ll save everyone!” Eve ultimately asked, looking at her dead brethren. Shying away from them was a luxury, and now she had no time for such things.
“I will, Eve! Take care!”
And so, he ran off, to the site where the last bit of fighting was happening. Him, twenty-three shades… against the elite forces of Gramgrim, the only remaining fragment of the horrifying battalion; now, though, the time had come to end this warband once and for all.
…
Faster! Faster! I must be faster!
Keyaruga lunged through the woods, he jumped across logs, climbed the hills, passed a few ravines along the way, just to finally reach yet another battlefield. Mil was there, the wizened magician firmly held his staff. All bloodied, his robe torn apart, the old man still fought on.
“Masanna tanouti! (kill everyone)” A massive rider, carried by an even greater armored warg tackled Mil and his defense line of mostly women spellcasters, and a few strong men among the refugees.
“Usegi! (run) Usegi-i!!!” Mil yelled, getting ready to ward off the seemingly countless hordes of bloodthirsty invaders, preferably – all on his own. The thought of death never scared the magician, as he already looked in its eyes, and they were gentle.
“Mil-murnaz! (elder Mil!) Katunj pora bornul non! (we have nowhere to retreat!)” An armored old woman yelled, preparing her grandiose fire blast. None of them would abandon him. Only seventeen of them remained against a group of forty-seven raving cutthroats, knowing all too well, they wouldn’t be able to pull through. And yet, none of them would go down without a fight. If they did, they would be slaughtered, and after that – their kin would follow.
“SUNI-I-I-I!!! (DI-I-IE!!!)” The bruised elder snarled, imbuing his wooden staff with an element of lightning. One swing, one smack – and the monstrous wolf fell down, wriggling in the shocking agony, along with its master. One down.
“Globus igneus!” The armored hag next to him yelled, sending a massive fireball into the troops. Seven perished, four else – scattered. Yet, those who fell were mercilessly crushed underfoot by the four brutal tiger-riders – no regards to their allies, and even less toward the foe. Five men and two women from the black-wings stood up to meet them with their spears, staked into the earth… It didn’t work – the demons breached their line, gutting everyone in the reach of their decorated cleavers.
“Katunji! (retreat!) Konato wor marmori! (protect the children)” Mil commanded, tossing two hardened feathers into the enemies. Too close to him, but… it didn’t matter. “KURLINA-A-A!!! (FUCK YOU!!!)” He yelled, detonating the enchanted quills.
BOOM!
An explosion, a shockwave, the trembling of the earth. Kokuyoku were mercilessly pushed further, practically hunted like animals, and yet, their prey had claws and teeth. The blast was mighty, it broke Gramgrim’s formation, allowing the defenders to flee, to run, to… live a few minutes longer.
“Kha-a-a… Ha-a-a… Agh…” Mil helplessly wheezed, pushed to the trunk of the giant oak. His bones were broken, the old man had lost all feeling in his legs, hands, and… No, he knew what he was getting into. “Gh-h-h!.. Ugh… E… va… ma…” Even when some tall goblinoid thug impaled him with a spear, the only thing on the mind of the dying sorcerer was his granddaughter, and all those he tried to save. Tried, but…
“I’VE COME TO SAVE YOU!!!” Keyaruga roared, engaging a bat-like swordsman, lunging toward the fleeing defenders. Just in a few hundred meters away, the refugees were running from the pursuers. It was honestly a miracle to see them keeping such a substantial distance, even though the enemies had carnivorous mounts. It seems, like they were rather enjoying chasing their prey.
“GHA-A-A!!!” Nevertheless, the fencer retreated from the hero, picked up a lance from the roasted wolf-man, and tossed it into the hero. The latter dodged, then pointed in the direction of his adversaries.
“Tania wor tanouti! (kill them!) Orn wor shef na! (don’t be concerned about me!)” And just like that, a cascade of shadows materialized to shred the enemy flanks and rear. The raging dark spirits now flew all across the surviving hunters’ ranks, ripping and tearing, stabbing and shredding the yelling warriors, as they tried to damage the ethereal vengeful apparitions. Could it be worse? Oh yes! Someone began simply sniping them from afar, numerous beams of piercing light took lives of so many, the Gramgrim’s morale hit the bottom.
Still, that didn’t mean they’d stop fighting. Certainly not! The bat-demon just met a shade with a wide swing from his reddish greatsword – an instant later, this spirit was gone. An adamantine blade – Keyaruga couldn’t just let him roam around – the man tossed a dagger from his sleeve, but no. The warrior just easily deflected it with a sneer. Before the lad could go on, he crossed those twenty meters with merely two jumps, ready to cleave the hero’s head in one rapid sweep.
The man ducked, right leg forward, balance toward offence. A slash was aimed toward the leg…
“Ghhh!” And it failed – the healer got a knee in his chin for that. After all, how can a thin saber cut through the metal greaves underneath the surcoat? Discombobulated, the man was about to get a downward cut to his shoulder.
“A-A-A-A-R-R-R-R!!!” Fortunately for him, another shade saved Keyaruga the trouble by backstabbing the fencer. Well, she just impaled him in the right armpit. Did that stop the berserker? “ULMO-O-O!!! (BITCH!)” Well, certainly not. Even if his one limb flopped uselessly by his side now, the warrior firmly grabbed his sword with his left hand, turned around, and slammed the spirit with the pommel, sending herto in the afterlife for sure!
A perfect chance to dispatch the swordsman, right?
Wrong! Barely had Keyaruga reached out to give the adversary one fatal touch, when another massive tiger-like brute attacked him with his massive claws. Slash, swing, up, down – the bruiser-armorclad was fast, his attacks – relentless. The lad was forced to retreat, elope, block – anything and everything to not get smashed. Each time he blocked a hit with his saber, his elbow would dislocate. No matter, Georgius healed in less than a second. No matter, just get…
“Tokalbarne! (got you!)” Alright, now that was surprising. The lad felt the trap, but proved too slow to escape the massive tail. Distracted by the tiger, he let himself be trapped by a lamia, which now not only enveloped the man’s entire body, but also unceremoniously licked his cheek. Was it the end?
“A-A-A-A-a-a… Ha-ha-HA-HA-HA!!! TUYOBU, TONA!!! (harder, mommy!)” Clearly not! Even while being crushed by the mighty snake tail, Keyaruga laughed, intimidating his foes with the undying audacity within his immortal body. “USHI INAV… MUNA CABNEI!!! (YOU ARE ALREADY DEAD!)”
“Nan-! A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A!!!” The lamia groaned in pain. A moment later her body began to swell, to bloat, and to rupture in a gruesome spectacle of blood and gore. Could Keyaruga do it better? Certainly, but he had no time, nor wish to figure out the half-shake’s anatomy, and where her heart (Is it just one?) lied.
Either way, one down, the shades did their job too, keeping the rest of the Gramgrim goons busy, often even ending them. They were forty-seven? Well, now they were just nineteen, and the monsters’ corpses didn’t actually do wonders for the battle spirit of the remainder either.
Keyaruga couldn’t care less, though. He got out from the lamia’s mortal grip, covered in blood and viscera, only his clean white teeth shone brightly.
“E-eh…” The tiger-brawler was shaken by the view. He reached toward the woman, unable to believe his eyes. Was she his lover, or something?
“Die!” No matter, whatever the case, the Hero of Healing dashed toward him, pushed his armored left arm against his chest, and then, the purple hue killed the man for good. His aorta just ruptured from the defiled mending spell.
Then, more beasts, some of which were mounted, lunged toward him. Two tigers, a massive deer, a swarm of eight snakes, and even a giant black bear. The warband reasoned that the fastest way to get rid of shadows was to kill the man. Well, they were wrong.
“Saltare et aurugine ventis!” At this point, he didn’t really care about the melee, that’s why, instead of engaging in anymore close-quarter fights, the lad simply called upon a mighty firestorm, a burning tornado of wind and blaze, which not only killed the animals, but also moved on to the rest of the crumbled Gramgrim troops, razing trees, ma-muana and ma-zok alike, charring their flesh and drowning their screams in the mercilessly loud crackling of magical flames.
I guess, that’s what I’m getting for not min-maxing my physical stats and speed before going melee. Well, no matter. Now that they’re dead… Wait, Mil?
“MIL!!!” Keyaruga yelled, running toward the old mage. He… was already beyond saving. Fifteen shades gathered around the hero, as he looked at the impaled man, and his decapitated green-skinned murderer who had been killed next to him. “Muna sagri. (You may leave)” And so, the healer sent the shades away. Quite in time, actually, as they were already flickering in and out of existence anyway – Eve was losing her mana. Finally, the lad was all alone. “Alright, old daredevil. You deserved a nice funeral.” He pulled the spear out of the corpse, and put it on his shoulder. It wasn’t much, but at least, he would be sent off properly.
Time to go, I guess. Now, let’s reunite with Eve, and then…
“A-A-A-A-A!!!” Another change of plans. The lad heard a scream. Two voices, in fact, both females. The man looked around and saw the bat-swordsman, dragging a mother and her child by their hair, completely disregarding their wails of pain whatsoever.
“What, do you really think taking hostages will save you?” Keyaruga scoffed, taking a step toward the cowardly combatant. Quite surprising really, seeing how good he was with that greatsword of his. But, well, two more, two less – the black-wings were doomed either way, right?
“Keyaruga-maran!” Maybe so, but those weren’t just some unknown refugees – they were Mayala and Brin. When the man saw them, he halted his movements completely.
“Good humie! Stand right where you are, or they die!” The cutthroat threatened. It seemed he had already healed the wound left by a shade with a potion. And now, instead of running away, he intended to use the captured family to extort the hero. For what purpose, though?
“Oh, great! Finally, someone, who speaks a human language!” Keyaruga wouldn’t be swayed by that. Why would he, actually? As it stood now, he could simply send a spell of light through the mother or the daughter, run closer, heal them…
Why should I even care? It’d only hurt for a moment, nothing really…
“Good! And stay there, little shit.” Well, turned out, it worked. The healer lowered his saber.
“Or what? You kill them? See those burning pines, pal? I just killed all of your friends. By the way, Gramgrim is no more. I bet Caladrius has already eaten all of their corpses.”
“Hah, no shit, clever boy! Then where is she?! HE-E-EY!!! CALADRIUS!!! OVER HE-E-ERE!!! See?” Sadly, the bat-fencer remained completely unfazed by the news. He still had an advantage – Keyaruga seemed to care for the weeping family, and that was his weakness. “Drop your sword, then get on your knees, or I’ll take their fucking heads!”
“How enticing…” The man wondered with a nervous grin. He spun his weapon once, and pointed it to the ground. Mayala and Brin looked at him, their black eyes conveyed terror and distress. And still, there was a glimpse of hope. Keyaruga could do a miracle. He would save them, just like he saved the girl from the terminal rabies. “Will you set them free if I surrender?”
“Yau! (yeah!)” The swordsman grinned, drawing his reddish blade closer to their necks. “Drop your iron!”
Ha-ha-ha-hah! Oh, what should I do? What should I make?
“Hey, I’ve got a better idea. How about I kill myself?” And just like that, the healer pointed his own weapon at his chest, sowing dread in the hearts of the hostages and careless amusement in their captor.
“What? He-heh! Go ahead, humie, I’ll watch!” The bastard chuckled, slightly lowering his massive blade. This nasty glee grew only greater, when…
“Heh, I’m serious!” …the red-eyed lad plunged his own saber through his chest. To deep, in fact, that only the handle now stuck out from his torso.
“KEYARUGA-SONA!!!”
“UA-A-A-A-A-A-A-A-A!!!”
“Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha! You’re fucking hilarious!”
Three reactions, one of terror, one of tears, and the last one of irrepressible laughter – Keyaruga spat a chunk of blood, such a wound could never really kill him, and yet, it allowed for a safe movement. One, two, three steps – as long as he pretended to limp forward like a dying fool, the enemy would never stop him from approaching. He liked the view, liked seeing the man bleeding and coughing his own lungs out. He even…
A beam. A beam of white energy just flew right besides his head. It took a moment for the cutthroat to get, what was going on, but when he did, when he understood, that some distant caster could take off his head…
“YOU FUCKER!!!” Then, the cowardly warrior grabbed his greatsword with a two-handed grip, swung it at the terrorized family… “I’LL KI-!” …and died. The last thing he saw, felt, and tasted – was the trident that pierced his neck and head from the back.

2023.06.02 14:24 Virtual_Tadpole9821 A BL fan's guide to visiting Thailand
There's been much talk about BL's potential as a driver of tourism. And it's evident, as some of you have shared your stories here in this sub, while others have asked for help planning upcoming trips. But there still appears to be a lack of easily accessible information for people visiting Thailand for the BL. Here's an attempt to remedy that, with this guide to visiting Thailand for BL fans. I've taken the liberty to incorporate suggestions from several previous threads here, as well as various other sources, so thank you to everyone who's contributed to the discussion.
First things first
This will only touch on things specifically of interest to BL fans. For the other aspects of your trip, including most basic planning stuff, please consult the usual travel resources.
That said, firstly you'll want to consider the purpose of your trip, and how much of it you want to dedicate to BL stuff. Do you just want a regular vacation, with a side stop for some merch, or are you here to relive the all the scenes from your favourite BLs? It's very possible to come up with a weeks-long itinerary of nothing but BL locations, and you could spend as much time mall-hopping to catch artist appearances, but Thailand also has a lot of other things to experience, whether you want to stick to the major attractions or go off the beaten track. It's all up to you.
Also, this probably goes without saying, but if you want to attend a specific event, be sure to plan around it and make travel arrangements accordingly. Concerts and fan meetings usually have tickets go on sale a couple of months in advance at most, so you'll want to have flexible options if you book your travel and accommodation before then.
Destinations
Most of the BL-related things you can do will be concentrated in
Bangkok, so it's where this guide will be mainly focused, but there are also several
provincial locations that have featured in BL, especially
Chiang Mai and
Chiang Rai in the north and
Phuket in the south, all of which are major tourist destinations in their own right. Series have also spent time at plenty of beaches and resorts (particularly around
Hua Hin and several towns in
Chonburi province) as well as other popular excursions, most of which are short trips from Bangkok. Further out are the island resorts of
Koh Samet,
Koh Tao and
Koh Lanta. The north-east
Isan locations are rather off the tourist trail, but could well be worth the experience if that's your style of travel.
Getting immersed
Arriving in Bangkok, one of the first things you'll notice as a fan of Thai BL (or Thai dramas in general) is that you're surrounded by familiar faces everywhere, on banners and billboards and
the back of tuk-tuks. Although BL actors aren't that well known among the general public (a surprise to some), the better known ones have a ton of brand endorsements and appear in ads for all sorts of products. Even if you're not planning your trip around BL,
spotting actors you know in ads and fan projects can be an entertaining pastime.
Head into a
7-Eleven and you're pretty much guaranteed to see faces you recognize, perhaps on products you're already familiar with from all those series sponsorships and product placements. If the advertising worked and you're dying to know what that bottled green tea or that seaweed snack tastes like, this is your chance to give them a try.
Speaking of tasting, you'll probably be sampling plenty of Thai food while here, so why not include some of the
food and drink items from the series you remember, be it som tam from
What Zabb Man, the traditional desserts from UWMA, or the famous pink milk, known here as nom yen?
Meanwhile, if taking public transport, spend some time watching the people and see how BL imitates real life. Do you recognize the colours of the
school uniforms? Or the university students in their white shirts and black slacks? You might even come across some engineering students in their workshop overshirts.
If you miss hearing the Raikantopeni disclaimer at the beginning of shows, be sure to turn on the TV to catch it as they air live. Be aware though that following shows in Thailand will be more difficult than at home, as they won't have subtitles on TV or on most local streaming services, so you'll likely need a VPN.
Merch stores & fan hangouts
This might be a bit of a letdown, but apart from GMMTV's, there aren't really any physical stores for official merchandise. But since you'll be in the country, you could check with your accommodation to see if they can arrange to accept local package deliveries for you, so you can place some online orders and avoid the international shipping fees. Be sure to check the processing and delivery times - this might be tricky (and won't work with pre-orders, only in-stock items).
GMMTV's shop is not a traditional giftshop as one might assume, but more like a kiosk at their office on the 30th floor of the
GMM Grammy Place building - there's just a small product display and a cashier window. Apart from buying products, there's a good chance of running into some actors when visiting, though you're not allowed to linger and there's nowhere to hang out apart from some cafés on the ground floor. You will likely spot some fan-project displays (as mentioned above) outside and in the building, and the cafés will often have cup-sleeve giveaways by fans. Here's a very helpful guide by
u/snuffles005:
How to visit the GMMTV building and shop Elsewhere, there's
Wab Cafe' and Friends, by the Studio Wabi Sabi people. It's a café, so you'll be buying drinks there rather than merch, but it's very much a space created for fans, and there will often be something going on like fan projects and giveaways, or maybe mini-events with actors making an appearance. It's in RCA, Bangkok's main clubbing neighbourhood (and home to studios where many productions hold their workshops), which takes a bit of an effort to get to, but it's also probably the most dedicated hangout space for BL fans there is.
From Star Hunter, there's
Hunter Village, a studio space (mostly used for dance classes) in MBK Center, one of Bangkok's most popular malls. It's a mostly open space, so you'll be able to see if there's someone coming in or something going on, but I'm not sure if it's really somewhere you can hang out at.
Other than that, quite a few actors have their own cafés or some other business, which you might want to visit to support them directly. Clothing and fashion items (perhaps from brands with your faves as presenters) may also be something you'd want to go shopping for.
For manga and anime (including BL/yaoi) there's an
Animate store (the specialty chain from Japan), also at MBK Center. In addition to imported works, they also have an extensive Thai section, with both translated and original works.
If you want to observe the Thai novel scene, just walk into any major Thai book store, where you'll likely find rows, maybe entire shelves, of BL novels, prominently displayed - BL has very much gone mainstream in the Thai publishing industry. You'll also find glossy magazines featuring actor photoshoots here. You'll have less luck finding English translations, though, as most translated works are e-book only. For English-language (and Japanese) books in general, your best bet is
Books Kinokuniya. They do have Japanese and Chinese translations of some Thai BL novels, as well as the English manga versions of
SOTUS and
Manner of Death, at international prices.
Catching events
Seeing actors up close (or at a distance) in real life will probably be the BL highlight of your trip for many of you. And unless you're ultra specific as to whom you want to see, there are ample opportunities to catch these actor appearances.
The biggest experiences will of course be the major events -
concerts, fan meetings, and the like - that you'll have to buy tickets for. As mentioned above, you'll have to plan around them if you want to attend (which also limits how long you can plan in advance), and make sure to actually get those tickets. They're usually announced very publicly, so it's hard to miss them if you follow the usual news update channels. If you're around when one takes place but can't attend, it can still be worth dropping by if you want to get hold of the merch or just check out the crowds.
For more casual fans, you'll still have plenty of chance to see actors at smaller events, as there's pretty much always something happening somewhere, though there might not be much choice on who you get to see. These events vary a lot in scale, and can be
anything from product launches to movie premieres. Most artist's agencies will announce them on their social media channels, usually on a weekly basis, and fan accounts may help share and/or translate them. You'll have to follow them to keep updated.
Most of these events will be held in Bangkok's plethora of malls. The biggest ones are mostly lined along the BTS Skytrain's Sukhumvit Line, so if you plan to do a lot of mall-hopping, whether for events or just shopping, consider getting accommodation with easy access to the BTS for convenience. Here's a great post by
u/BumblingWombat that describes the experience in detail:
What it's like to go to BL events in Thailand (Oh yeah, there are also top-spender events, which I won't go into, as I don't know anything about them. Those who're aiming for them probably won't need this guide anyway.)
Aside from these specific events, there are also annual book fairs that are partially or directly BL-related, where actors from various agencies may make appearances. The mainstream
National Book Fair and Book Expo are usually held at the beginning of April and some time in October. Since last year, BL novels and publishers have had a large presence there, and GMMTV actors made daily appearances with fan gatherings in the car park. There are also smaller book fairs directly focusing on BL:
Y Book Fair in July, and
International Novel Festival at the end of November. They also feature actor appearances, but can also be worth seeing just for the atmosphere if you're interested in experiencing the literary BL scene here.
On the other hand, to experience more of the community side of the fandom, you might want to check out some fan-held events, such as the

Visiting filming locations
If BL inspired you to make the trip to Thailand, no doubt you'd be interested in visiting some of the filming locations yourself. But while some of them are traditional tourist attractions in their own right, most aren't normally on the radar for general visitors, so it'll take a bit of investment (in time and travel) to include them in your trip.
If there's a single most iconic location to recommend, it must be the
Rama VIII Bridge over the Chao Phraya River, which shows up in more BLs than anywhere else. So far, it's been seen in
SOTUS,
SOTUS S,
Gen Y,
Tonhon Chonlatee,
I Promised You the Moon,
My Ride,
Enchanté,
Cutie Pie,
KinnPorsche,
Even Sun,
2 Moons: The Ambassador, and
Boyband. It's not really a tourist attraction, but it's a major landmark of modern Bangkok that everyone knows, and isn't too hard to get to. It's a bit of a walk (some 15 minutes, or just take a tuk-tuk) from either the Phra Athit or Thewet Pier if you're coming from the main riverside attractions and use the Chao Phraya Express (or Tourist) Boat. If you're into financial history, the Bank of Thailand Learning Center and museum is right next to the bridge. Otherwise, Suan Luang Rama VIII Park by its base is also nice, and also a filming location. The bridge itself is most photogenic at night, but make sure you have transport back if you stay late. Consider one of those dinner cruises if you want to experience it from the same angles as
KinnPorsche and
Cutie Pie.
For other locations, you'll need to do some research. If there's a specific series you want to follow, try searching to see if someone has already compiled a list of locations, which is likely the case for the more popular series. Most info will be on Tumblr or Twitter.
Filming locations may be public places, shops and businesses, private establishments, or purpose-built or converted studios, so remember to think of their ability to welcome visitors. Dress appropriately for the venue, take care to respect their regular functions, and be considerate to other people. Some of the most familiar locations are
university campuses, and the grounds will generally be open to the public, but they're not usually equipped to deal with large numbers of visitors. So if you do visit, have fun reliving those memorable scenes but make sure not to disturb the real students who are there for class. Meanwhile,
cafés, bars and restaurants would surely welcome your patronage, but please do not snoop around private offices or people's homes. It all boils down to following common sense, really.
A lot of the locations will be quite spread out and some distance away from downtown, so you'll have to plan carefully if you want to hit more than a few. You might want to hire transport for the day, but also take the traffic into consideration.
If you've always wanted to sleep in the same room that your favourite characters lived in (or at least an identical one), you might be in luck. Some of the
apartment locations may have rooms available for daily renting, so check with them. As above, though, their location can be rather inconvenient transport-wise. On the other hand, you might want to opt for the
hotels and resorts that featured as locations, which will be better equipped with tourist facilities.
For houses specifically, I have a post on
The houses of Thai BL. Most of them are private property rented out as studios, but some will be happy to accept visitors (for a fee) on their off days. Contact their management to see if a something can be arranged. Or if you're serious about it and ready to pay, just rent the place at full price for your own personal photoshoot. If you try it either way, do let us know how it turns out. On the other hand,
Wawa House (
To Sir, With Love) has a café for visitors,
Slōlē (
Golden Blood,
Bite Me,
Enchanté,
The Tuxedo,
The Eclipse) is a real-life café when not filming, and
Red Brick Kitchen (
Not Me,
KinnPorsche,
War of Y) features a chef's table dining experience (reservations only, 4 persons minimum).
If you're just looking for some usual attractions that happen to have BL appearances as a bonus, here are a few (very non-exhaustive) suggestions for Bangkok:
- Temples & shrines
- Wat Arun (KinnPorsche)
- Wat Kanlayanamit (KinnPorsche)
- Rong Kueak Shrine (Our Skyy: Pete-Kao, Our Skyy 2: Never Let Me Go)
- Museums & art galleries
- Warehouse 30 (Theory of Love)
- Bangkok Sculpture Center (Vice Versa)
- Historic buildings
- Hua Lamphong Railway Station (Theory of Love)
- So Heng Tai Mansion (Our Skyy: Pete-Kao)
- Neilson Hays Library (Enchanté)
- The House on Sathorn (functions as a restaurant) (KinnPorsche)
- Zoos, aquariums & other activities
- Sea Life Bangkok Ocean World (UWMA, IPYTM)
- Flick Skate Park (Cutie Pie)
- Themed markets
- Asiatique The Riverfront (Why R U?)
- Kwan-Riam Floating Market (My Engineer)
- ChangChui Creative Park & Plane Night Market (Vice Versa)
- Bridges & Parks
- Rama VIII Bridge & Park (see above)
- Memorial Bridge (& Chao Phraya Sky Park) ('Cause You're My Boy)
- Bhumibol Bridge (& Lat Pho Park) (Not Me, KinnPorsche, LITA)
- Chong Nonsi Skywalk & Canal Park (Chains of Heart, Bed Friend, The Promise)
- Queen Sirikit & Wachirabenchathat (Rotfai) Park (Cutie Pie, My School President)
- Benjakitti Forest Park (Vice Versa)
- Suan Luang Rama IX Park (Vice Versa)
- Chulalongkorn University Centenary Park (Vice Versa)
While Bangkok's malls are very much major attractions by themselves, I didn't include them as their appearances are quite too numerous to list.
Outside of Bangkok, each series will mostly feature locations relatively near each other (except
Cupid's Last Wish, which went all over the country), so I'll just list the series by destination without going into each location's detail.
- Chiang Mai: Manner of Death, Triage, Dew, Grey Rainbow, Sky in Your Heart, On Cloud Nine, 180 Degree Longitude, A Tale of Thousand Stars, everything by Wayufilm
- Chiang Rai: A Tale of Thousand Stars, The Love of Winter
- Lampang: Bed Friend
- Khon Kaen: Love Mechanics 2022
- Chachoengsao: Remember Me
- Chonburi: KinnPorsche, Star in My Mind, Never Let Me Go, Moonlight Chicken, Cutie Pie (Bira Circuit), My School President (Institute of Marine Science)

Further resources & suggestions
The Let's Talk BL podcast hosts talked about their experience in Thailand last year, covering a lot of the above points over several episodes at the beginning of season 3. Be sure to check them out if you want all the details, especially
S3 EP3: Tips & Tricks for the perfect BL experience in Bangkok. Some of their main tips that I didn't mention above are not to overstretch yourself trying to go to everything, and to use a map to plan your days.
Colourme-feral on Tumblr has
an incredible Google Map that plots locations from several series, and more in their blog, which a lot of the above is sourced from. For
Bad Buddy specifically,
Telomeke-bbs on Tumblr has a series of posts that analyse the locations at an insane level of detail.
I'm sure I haven't covered nearly everything in this post, so please feel free to add your suggestions in the comments. (I'll try to expand the locations list as I get around to digging for more series.) If you have questions or need help identifying a specific location, feel free to ask! (Though no guarantees there.)
For full disclosure, I'm receiving no compensation whatsoever for writing this. Any biases or omissions are purely unintentional.

2023.06.02 14:13 Attribute_Regressor Which should I work on first?
So I've been thinking about my OI novel ideas and wanted to seriously work on one but I'm unsure of which of the stories should I work on first so perhaps a poll would help with it. Here's the stories and descriptions of each one!
I am your other half After an unfortunate traffic accident, office worker Angelique Ramirez found herself in the body of Valley Iruzoa, the one and only child of a wealthy Marquis in a world far different than Earth. With memories she can only assume to be events of a novel she once read, it shows of the Marquis house's cruel downfall. And so begins her mission to prevent such a tragedy from happening all the while dealing with her new body's troublesome illness.
- A transmigration story that I plan on having a bit of a mystery part to it as well. There'll be romance yet not the focus.
I will destroy their death flags On the way to his part-time job, Noah Ark jumps into traffic to save a young child from getting hit. Expecting to awaken in the hospital or never at all, Noah instead wakes up in the body of a girl he later found out to be called Efreeti Vivache, the unwanted child of a Marquis. Only being able to make heads or tails of his situation with the help of Efreeti and her mother's diaries, he was later confronted by her twin younger siblings to continue their plan for her escape. And without a moment's rest, Noah later found out that the world he now lives in is a novel filled with nothing but tragedy.
- Transmigration with a comedic plot and romance as a subgenre although it'll mostly be a childcare type. Cold duke of the north yaknow the drill but I want a green flag one in this.
This wasn't in the plot! Eunice wanted nothing but death yet later realized that he has been reborn as Lucille Lizbane, a character from the webnovel he wrote and one of the villains who's fated to be killed by the protagonists. The event that marked the beginning of the prologue became the very event that allowed him to regain his past life's memories. Eunice has no desire to ever change his fate, merely accepting his future and to keep to the novel's plot as closely as possible, resolved himself to play the villain role properly. However, all of his plans immediately crumbled before his eyes when the main story began, one of the main characters started acting out of script! Lucille's younger brother Cecille, who is one of the people that would kill him in the future, is now doing all that he can to get closer to him!
- Reincarnation with a somewhat??? comedic plot. There'll be shenanigans, but also heavy topics (tackling on Eunice's problems) as well as romance subgenre, again won't be the main focus and NO IT WON'T BE SWEET HOME ALABAMA.
My Protection will be this Kingdom's Neverending Eclipse Aurora swore her loyalty to the crown, and yet in exchange took the lives of those she cares most for. Her father that died in an unnecessary war, and now her brother died protecting her from the knights that came upon the order to kill her, the so called "villainess of the kingdom." Not wanting to waste the life her brother had given, she spent it all in hiding whilst researching for a way, a chance to get her loved ones back, a chance at revenge. Aurora's wishes had been answered as time rewound 10 years before everything went wrong and in this life, she won't ever let anything happen to her family.
- Regression revenge genre but with a twist that isn't going to be the big surprise since I planned on showing it early on, aka there's a transmigrator and I was thinking of having dual pov between Aurora and the transmigrator. Though it is revenge type, there'll be lighthearted comedic scenes between the clashing lenses (regressor sees through a lens of revenge, transmigrator sees through a lens of OI)
- This will have a 3rd pov though with Aurora's brother but not as much focus as Aurora and the transmigrator.
Miracle of a Thousand Cranes Jacob was certain of the rope's sensation around his neck and so confusion filled him as he woke up as a young boy with uniquely coloured hair and sunflower-like eyes. Already beyond exhausted from living and wanting nothing more but an eternal rest, grabbed the sharpest object nearby. However in a space where his soul resides, Jacob met what appeared to be a spirit who explained the special circumstances of the body he now has. Bearing the curse of immortality with no other option left, Jacob that later changed his name to Adrian, chose to go with the flow of this strange world he finds himself in.
- Transmigration with a genre more focused on self-love so although there will be romance, it won't be main focus. It's more of Adrian's journey in healing.
- Also, it isn't final cuz I'm not sure how the plot would turn out but I plan on giving this the triple combo, aka transmigrator, regressor, and reincarnator. But yeah, not final yet cuz I don't want the plot to become convoluted. Although there will be at least another one of them, either a reincarnator or regressor.

2023.06.02 14:13 LChris24 The Promise: Starks/Manderlys (Spoilers Extended)
The Promise: The Oath Between House Stark & House Manderly
In this post, I thought it would be fun to look into as much as I can,
the history behind "The Promise", that is the oaths sworn by House Manderly to House Stark.
Background We first hear about the promise when Davos visits White Harbor to try and gain support for Stannis when Wylla Manderly gives this brave speech in the Merman's Court:
"I know about the promise," insisted the girl. "Maester Theomore, tell them! A thousand years before the Conquest, a promise was made, and oaths were sworn in the Wolf's Den before the old gods and the new. When we were sore beset and friendless, hounded from our homes and in peril of our lives, the wolves took us in and nourished us and protected us against our enemies. The city is built upon the land they gave us. In return we swore that we should always be their men. Stark men!" -ADWD, Davos III
and:
"Wylla." Lord Wyman smiled. "Did you see how brave she was? Even when I threatened to have her tongue out, she reminded me of the debt White Harbor owes to the Starks of Winterfell, a debt that can never be repaid. -ADWD, Davos IV
Not only does this speech give me goosebumps (
even moreso than Lyanna Mormont's letter) but it is packed with information about the history between House Manderly and House Stark.
The Manderlys in the Reach The Manderlys are an ancient line of lords descended from the First Men who lived along the Mander in the Reach. There they held the castle Dunstonbury and had a fierce rivalry with House Peake.
Originally bannermen of the Gardeners, their rivalry with the Peakes is mentioned numerous times:
Gwayne the Fat persuaded Lord Peake and Lord Manderly to accept his judgment on their quarrel, and do fealty for their lands, without fighting a single battle. -TWOIAF, The Reach
seemingly similar to the Kingdom of the Reach's version of the
Blackwood/Bracken Feud:
The nadir of Gardener power came during the long reign of King Garth X, called Garth Greybeard, who succeeded to the crown at the age of seven and died at ninety-six—a reign even longer than that of his famous forebear Garth Goldenhand. Though vigorous in his youth, Garth X was a vain and frivolous king who surrounded himself with fools and flatterers. Neither wise nor clever, his wits abandoned him entirely in old age, and during the long years of his senility, he became the tool of first one faction, then another as those around him vied for wealth and power. His Grace had sired no sons, but Lord Peake had married one of his daughters, Lord Manderly another, and each was determined that his wife should succeed. The rivalry between them was marked by betrayal, conspiracy, and murder, finally escalating into open war. Others lords joined in on both sides.
at some point likely between 1000BC and 600BC (Rohanne Webber, Godric Borrell and Wylla Manderly/Yandel have somewhat different dates), the Manderlys were forced to flee the Reach (and this became one of the Peake's 3 original castles, along with Whitegrove and Starpike):
When the pride and power of House Manderly became overweening, it was Lorimar Peake who humbled them and drove them into exile in the North, for which service King Perceon III Gardener granted him the former Manderly seat at Dunstonbury and its attendant lands. -Fire & Blood I: Under the Regents—War and Peace and Cattle Shows
The Wolf's Den/Mouth of the White Knife In the north, the area already had the Wolf's Den at the mouth of the White Knife:
Even before the coming of the Andals, the Wolf’s Den had been raised by King Jon Stark, built to defend the mouth of the White Knife against raiders and slavers from across the narrow sea (some scholars suggest these were early Andal incursions, whilst others argue they were the forebears of the men of Ib, or even slavers out of Valyria and Volantis). -TWOIAF, The North
so its not like the Starks weren't getting something out of it as well (in addition to gold):
Held for centuries by a succession of houses (including the Greystarks, an offshoot of House Stark itself, as well as Flints, Slates, Longs, Holts, Lockes, and Ashwoods), the ancient fortress would be the focus of a succession of conflicts. During the wars between Winterfell and the Andal Kings of Mountain and Vale, the Old Falcon, Osgood Arryn, laid siege to the Wolf’s Den. His son, King Oswin the Talon, captured it and put it to the torch. Later, it fell under attack from the pirate lords of the Three Sisters and slavers out of the Stepstones. It was not until some thousand years before the Conquest, when the fugitive Manderlys came to the North and swore their oaths at the Wolf’s Den, that the problem of the defense of the White Knife—the river that provides access into the very heart of the North—was resolved with the creation of White Harbor.
The Promise The Manderlys gave the Starks a loyal bannerman, a defender of key area, and gold, while the Manderlys received protection, the right to keep their gods (according to Lord Borrell):
“The Manderlys are no northmen, not down deep. ’Twas no more than nine hundred years ago when they came north, laden down with all their gold and gods. They’d been great lords on the Mander until they overreached themselves and the green hands slapped them down. The wolf king took their gold, but he gave them land and let them keep their gods.” -ADWD, Davos I
although Yandel claims that at least some of their money was used to build White Harbor
Until King’s Landing rose beside the Blackwater, White Harbor was the newest city in the Seven Kingdoms. Built with the wealth that the Manderlys had brought with them from the Reach after having been driven into exile by Lord Lorimar Peake at the behest of King Perceon III Gardener, who feared their swelling power in the Reach, White Harbor has more in common with the fine castles and towers of the Reach than with the castles of the North; it is said that the New Keep was built to reflect the castle of Dunstonbury, which the Manderlys had lost in their exile.
Since that time the Manderlys have married into House Stark on at least a couple occassions:
- Jeyne Manderly (Rickon Stark - daughters Serena/Sansa)
- Myriame Manderly (Rodwell Stark - became Lady of Winterfell potentially a She Wolf of Winterfell)
and fought alongside the Starks during Robert's Rebellion:
When Ser Bartimus was in his cups (and Ser Bartimus was in his cups most every day), he liked to boast of how he had saved Lord Wyman’s life at the Battle of the Trident. The Wolf’s Den was his reward.
also worth noting is that while most people tend to focus on him being a member of the
Order of the Green Hand, his other titles seemingly reference the promise and their previous location:
None chose to honor Davos with a name. The maester was the first to speak. “You stand before Wyman Manderly, Lord of White Harbor and Warden of the White Knife, Shield of the Faith, Defender of the Dispossessed, Lord Marshal of the Mander, a Knight of the Order of the Green Hand,” he said. “In the Merman’s Court, it is customary for vassals and petitioners to kneel.”
- Shield of the Faith (being in a land dominated by the Old Gods, this was seemingly part of the promise)
- Defender of the Dispossessed (I love this title, seemingly referencing their flight)
- Lord Mashal of the Mander
House Manderly remembers this promise (the north remembers) as we see with their support in Robert's Rebellion, The War of the Five Kings, Frey Pie and even Manderly's current plan (
Davos/Rickon even though he knows Bran is alive).

2023.06.02 13:51 Pleasant-Ad-6364 Accepting I Have NPD: Awakening
I’ve come a long way since November 2022 when my wife discovered nude pics of women on our shared photo account (I’ve previously been careful about deleting these pics but these slipped through). My wife of 30 years reacted with disgust (pics were graphic for her but routine Penthouse stuff but still). For the first time she refused to sleep in our bed. How did I find out? She texted me “oops.” That’s all it took and I knew immediately what she was referring to.
How did I react initially? Panic? Remorse? Nope. I was outed and not happy about it until my wife started talking divorce which scared the crap out of me. Her face said it all: hardened, angry. I then pulled out all my stops: childhood trauma, difficult life, disabilities, etc. All fell on deaf ears. My wife wasn’t listening.
I began to spiral down now realizing for the first time the harm I caused her. I became suicidal and had it all planned out: I own a gun and knew where to aim. But at last sec I gave my wife my weapons. Just so happened I saw a new therapist that day and told him I was actively suicidal. He was concerned enough he called my wife and police. I came home and there were three officers standing inside my house. I had to surrender my guns and whether I wanted to or not I was told I had no choice but to go to ED for eval. I scoffed.
I’m brought by ambulance to psych ED at my local hospital where a parade of mental healthcare professionals came streaming in and out of my room. I’m a physician I told them. I was honest with my concerns. I thought for sure I’d be allowed to go home. Much to my shock I was involuntarily committed to psych ward for eval. This is now early Jan 2023.
I’m now in hospital but I wasn’t really coming to terms with how serious a condition I was in. Mg sex life was lousy I told the professionals therein. I had a tough childhood. But at no time did I acknowledge my role in this. I spent a week in the unit before I was allowed to go home. When I got home my wife (who picked me up) looked at the discharge papers and saw my diagnosis. Silently she handed me the papers. Diagnosis: NPD.
I was not told about this diagnosis while admitted and not certain why. My wife immediately began reading up on this condition and then came to me and said, yep, the diagnosis fits me to a T. For her it was confirmation of the reasons we had a less than ideal marriage (ok, unpleasant). For me it was a revelation.
In outpatient therapy I learned for the first time what validation is and whole object relations. I realized how entitled I was. And so the dawning awareness of this disease became apparent to me.
I decided to finally read up on NPD and was shocked to see how many of the criteria I had that met the diagnosis of covert NPD.
When I completed the month long outpatient psych program I decided to look for a therapist who specializes in NPD. My wife found her own counselor as well. This is now mid Feb.
I decide that I’m going to force myself to lower my defense shields and listen to my wife and her concerns and criticisms. It really was a punch to the gut to listen to this but I did.
I became self-aware. This is now early March. I decided to to keep written journal and join Reddit NPD discussion group where I’ve posted other threads detailing my self growth.
I’ve now come to a point where I’m not only self aware but I’ve awakened to a new world. Like Neo in the Matrix (one of my all time favorite movies). I’m now in a place where few NPDers have ventured.
I’m living now without my NPD defense mechanisms. I’m accepting criticism. I’m growing and evolving. I’ve become an active listener. I no longer speak as if I’m the most important person in the room.
I’m now treating my wife with respect, kindness and compassion. I’m learning this through DBT.
My wife wants to stay in our marriage and we started marital counseling 2 months ago. A lot of stuff is coming out.
She’s sad, angry, resentful of what she’s been through. She told me yesterday she lost interest in sex 15 years ago and was pretty much servicing me. That was another sad revelation. She told me she had passion and was emotionally invested with boyfriends before we met but lost all of this in the first few years of our marriage. Why then did she remain in our marriage? She didn’t want to me seen as a divorcee and so she suffered in silence.
Along the way I came under the care of a therapist who knows nothing of of NPD and so I complained to her how lousy my marriage was and also about my miserable relationship with my mother. I stayed with this therapist for 9 years and all she did was to validate my concerns. I received no diagnosis.
My wife had a nervous breakdown 15 years ago and came under the care of a psychiatrist whom she saw for 3 years during which our marriage came up. Despite what she told this doc, NPD never came up but not surprisingly that was when she lost interest in sex. I wasn’t there for her emotionally to help her through this difficult period.
So we spent the last 15 years going through the motions as I hoarded various things and and became addicted to online porn all the while I was I was a very active physician.
So there you have it. My life story in a nutshell. I’ve started EMDR to address my childhood issues. I’m not looking forwards to this but it’s part of my healing process.
And my wife is still here. I’m still not sure of what the future holds for us at this point but we’re taking things one day at a time.

2023.06.02 13:42 Immediate_Strategy20 An experience of a South Korean converting to catholicism (originally posted on an online forum in South Korea)
Originally posted on an online forum in South Korea anonymously
Title: Story of myself, now a catholic catechumen, because of a shaman
(무당, Korean shaman from ancient and folk belief in South Korea)
Influenced by some protestants that I know, I was interested in the concept of christian God, but stayed a non-believer. One day, I came across a very convincing shaman. I didn't use to believe shamanism until then, when the shaman could correctly guess all the private stuff that she shouldn't know about me and my family or friends. I was convinced that the spiritual world exists, and started studying about shamanism.
While most shamans acknowledge the existance of God, they say that he is also one of many spirits in this world, and told me to just attend a church without asking too much. On the other side, christians(protestants) held that spirits that the shamans serve are corrupted spirits who defy God and wish to be a god himself. I thought that was credible. (Just like demons recognize Jesus in the Bible, spiritual beings can recognize each other.)
If shamans are all scam and just want to make money, they could have just denied the existance of God, but they all admitted it without resist. I found this wierd and other things also. It is awkward that the spirits punish shamans if they choose not to serve them. Shamans themselves said to me that none of the spirits they serve are actually good, they just use the shamans' body to exploit them. (That is why most shamans are so hysteric and chronically ill) Also, they say that a shaman's abilities are only affective during the first years after initial possession; after a few years the spirits abandon her and the shaman has to rely on fraud. I thought this could never be a proper religion.
(cf. In Korean shamanism, spirits punish a woman with disease and bad luck, if she defies it and chooses not to be a shaman. Most Korean shamans are traditionally female and is not a shaman by free will, but they were threatened by a spirit. Shamans were traditionally looked down on, frowned upon and considered lower class in Korea.)
So I cancelled all the appointments with the most famous shamans in Korea, which I have waited for weeks. I started to think about whether to attend a prostestant church, or the catholic one.
That happened this March, and I was going through a personal crisis, being in self-hatred and physically ill, too. I realized that I could not overcome all the evils in this world by myself, and I started praying to God. I told him that I just want to be in piece so please help me hold myself together. Then suddenly I started praying 'I believe. From now on, I will not live for the sake of myself but for other people.' Then I was in piece. However, I did not pray that because I genuinely think about other people, but because I was in such pain. I could not fully understand why I said that to God.
The next day was the day I finally left home and went back to Seoul. After I bought a ticket for a bus, I got a call from a friend who lives alone in Seoul. He usually never calls me for any kind of favor. He said, he got a surgery and he couldn't live by himself, and asked me to come over to his house for a few days to help him.
I was surprised that he called right on the day I was going back to Seoul, and I gladly decided to help him. The next day when I arrived at Seoul and got off from the bus, I met a christian charity worker. The worker asked me to donate for a kid who is very sick and the kid had the same name as myself!
(cf. In Korea having a same first name is somewhat rare, although many people have the same last name.)
I visited the same bus terminal for more than 50 times in my life, and this thing never happened to me before. And the same name? I thought this was God's work. So I signed to donate right away and found out the charity worker also had the same name as myself and the kid!
Afterwards, I naturally came to become a catholic, which I think I was guided by the holy spirit. My friend would have prepared for the surgery for days. The charity worker must have decided to be there at least several days ago. And I prayed to God just the day before everything happened. So, I think even my prayer was not 100% my own will but everything was planned and guided by him.
I share this story because of the talk I had with someone in another online forum. She said that a shaman could guess and be right about everything of her past. And the shaman made some predictions about her future and she was worried. I told her that I believe that shamans are capable of such things, and that a shaman convinced me about the existance of the spiritual world and I ended up being catholic.
She asked me why I became catholic when it was the shaman who had proven her abilities. So I told her everything. Then she said she is actually a catholic too, and she thinks that it is God's will that she happened to talk to me. She said she will just rely on God from now on. She also met several shamans and they all told her to keep believing in Jesus when she never told them that she had any religion.

- Same experience here, I also met shamans and ended up being catholic
ㄴ maybe some people are just predestined to become one.
- Reminds me of a North Korean I met. When he was fleeing, a shaman told him that God will help him... Nobody talks about God in North Korea, so he couldn't get it, but when he suceeded escaping and came to South Korea a catholic charity helped him.. so he became catholic.
- I could relate to every single thing you said, similar experience here. GOD LIVES!!
- Halleluya~
- Thank you for sharing.
- Similar experience here. Shamans could know that I was ill before I even told them. I heard some of my ancestors were shamans... I started having dreams about the future... and thank God I decided to become catholic. I use to attend a protestant church then I became atheist, but I just could not deny the existance of God after what I went through.
ㄴ The spiritual world is hard to understand. People who have such spiritual abilities.. why they usually cannot see God and become shamans... Good for you that you became a catholic instead.
- I went to three different shamans last year for fortune telling concerning my business. When I told them I was catholic the all said I made a good choice. They also told me to do requiem masses so I do that every month for my grandma and father. I don't know if that's why but I'm having a great year. God is present! :)
ㄴ Did the shamans even tell you to do the requiem mass???
ㄴ As a catechumen I find these comments very helpful.
- The sick kid with the same name that you've helped, he was actually yourself. How God used you to help poor souls .. including yourself... God is preparing something BIG for you! I hope your baptism goes great and also your journey of faith in God.
ㄴ Thank you for such nice words. Piece be with you!

2023.06.02 13:34 ThatKidOnTheBloc Not sure how to feel about visiting college friends
I graduated university last year and currently live in Europe. I told my friends in North America, I'd like to come visit and so I made sure to plan my trip so that it fit in with their schedule. Now, unfortunately my 3 friends, two of which were my roommates, are all unable to accommodate my visit for a few nights.
I know it's not their responsibility to make sure I have a place to stay, but I don't have a lot of money and I spent quite a lot on my flight to go there. I would always make sure they'd have a place to stay at mine comfortably if they'd visit me in Europe. These were my best buddies in college. All of them had reasons such as having someone else stay at ours at the same time or their place is too small, so there wouldn't be any space. My only option is booking something now.
I literally asked one of my friends a few weeks ago if I could potentially stay at his a couple nights. He said he has to ask his roommate if it's okay. I received a message yesterday that his roommate is going to have a bunch of his highschool buddies staying at theirs at the same time, so I won't be able to stay there as there won't be enough space. Basically, that tells me that his roommate's highschool buddies have priority over me considering he just found out they were staying there at that time as well. I asked him 3 weeks ago.
Not gonna lie, I'm a bit disappointed. I'm a 23 year old male. I've never had to do this visiting friends. I'm literally staying for the weekend. It's a bit shit if I have to book a hotel for just myself. I'm genuinely considering not going, and instead, going elsewhere in the states to a friend's house where he says I'm welcome to stay at his as long as I want.

2023.06.02 13:26 cyrusposting Attempting to rule out the Government Experiment Theory (How old is Fromville?)
There is a tempting theory that Fromville is a government experiment. I would like to rule out this theory as best as I can, so we can move on to other theories. The most compelling evidence for the Government Experiment theory, in my opinion, is that all of the residents have been taken from somewhere in the continental United States. Let's talk about that.
Map of locations people arrived in the town from, showing no entry points from outside the continental US. There's someone from San Diego, but nobody from Mexico, 17 miles away. There are pins tantalizingly close to the Canadian border too, but nobody was actually grabbed from Canada. Nobody from the Caribbean either, and nobody from Alaska or Hawaii.
Does it matter? Could it just be the writers catering to an US audience?
I think this map is intentional evidence of something. If they can have two characters (Kenny's Parents) who speak very little English, I don't think having a Mexican or a Canadian marked on a map would make Americans less likely to watch the show. Remember, these characters wouldn't even have to be still living or appear in the show. The pins on the map don't all correspond to still living characters, and it is an intentional choice to simply stop at the border.
How many people are counted here?
One thing worth mentioning is that these are only people who came after some undefined point, but I think given that this map is in the Sherriff's office we can assume they started keeping track after Boyd's arrival 2 years ago.
I can't quite make out most of the names, and my screenshot doesn't help, but I can't find any names from Colony House. Let me know if you can. It might help for someone who is better than me at reading handwritten text to open this in the actual show where you can get the best resolution. The questions to answer here are whether its only people from the town, and who is the longest staying resident we can find.
Why just the US?
Here are all of the theories I have for why this would only be happening to Americans.
- Fromville is an experiment being carried out by the US Government.
- The entrance to Fromville, being a wormhole or whatever else, has to be transported physically, by land, and it would be problematic to get it through customs.
- Fromville is designed to punish Americans for something. This would have to be a punishment for something that Canadians and Mexicans didn't also do, which rules out settling the Americas.
- Every country gets their own.
- Its some mystical, paranormal force that for some reason cares about modern political borders. Maybe its the ghost of Osama Bin Laden or something.
- Something cultural or logical prevents them from making it onto this map. If its only people who settled in the town that make it onto the map, maybe it was impossible to convince Spanish speakers to get inside. The problem with this is that Canada is not culturally different enough from the United States to create a filter here. Maybe Canadians are all lumberjacks and when they hit the tree in the road they just cut it up and haul it out. Who knows. I can't think of how this theory would work, but its still possible.
- Its coincidence. Canada and Mexico have a lower populations than the United States, and if you squint the pins seem to have some correlation with regional population density. Maybe they just got lucky.
- It has to do with the interstate system. All of these pins seem to be placed on interstates. Mexico and Canada do not have an interstate system the same way the US does. I heard somewhere that one motivation for building the interstates was the Cold War, as an efficient way to evacuate cities in case of a nuclear attack. Maybe there's something there.
- Its a simulation so anything can happen, who cares.
- The people running Fromville don't want to introduce a language barrier. This theory is also weak, considering Kenny's parents speak very little English, and people were taken from south Florida, south Texas, and San Diego, who could very easily have been Spanish speakers. America in general is not a monolingual country. On the other hand, if people are selected individually (which the bus with Krysti's fiancée implies) then Kenny's family could have been selected *because* they have Kenny to translate, and the people from heavily Spanish speaking parts of the United states could be collected at no risk of introducing a language barrier to isolate them.
- It could be because of something I haven't thought of, let me know in the comments.
I don't like most of these answers, but they're what I've got.
Why just the continental US?
- The US Government is running the experiment, but lacks the resources to do anything in Alaska or Hawaii despite having wormhole technology. Or they just don't care to run this experiment on Hawaiians and Alaskans, because they wouldn't get useful data from them for some reason.
- The entrance to Fromville, being a wormhole or whatever else, has to be transported physically, by land, and it would be problematic to get it through customs.
- Hawaii and Puerto Rico don't have long enough stretches of empty country roads, while Alaska just doesn't have enough people for it to be likely that one is here, the same reason why there's nobody from Wyoming, Idaho, or Nebraska.
- The wormhole operates within some radius, you can draw a circle on a map which includes all of these pins but excludes Hawaii and Alaska.
- It could be something I haven't thought of, let me know in the comments.
Again, none of these are great answers, but its all I've got.
Dating the beginning of Fromville.
If Fromville is 5 years old, the government experiment theory is plausible. The older Fromville is, the less likely it is that the US Government had the potential to create this kind of thing. Even setting aside the impossible geometry, we have seen wires that go nowhere but still power things. We've seen bioengineered superhumans who can shapeshift and rip a person apart in seconds, all while being impervious to bullets. Not to mention the ability to induce shared hallucinations and read minds.
Not only are these things beyond present technology, they are things a government would find extremely useful for projects that make a lot more money than torturing two dozen of its own citizens secretly. I think, without some kind of magic, we can rule out almost all human causes. Terror attacks, government experiments, basically every explanation of a manmade Fromville, except The Matrix or something supernatural, like magic. All we need to do is prove that Fromville is very old.
So, maybe the present-day government has this technology and is keeping it a secret, or its still being tested. In that case, did they have this technology in the 70's, when Victor arrived? As we go further back, it becomes less plausible.
We see Civil War uniforms on some of Jade's hallucinations, which would be dated to the 1880s, but these civil war soldiers may not necessarily have been trapped in Fromville or may not have actually existed at all.
What about the US Marine that Boyd meets in the tower? He doesn't recognize Boyd's style of pistol, presumably because its a semi automatic. The first semi automatic sidearm formally adopted by the US military was the Colt 1911, adopted in 1911. If you've seen a Colt 1911, you wouldn't look at Boyd's pistol and say "That doesn't look like any pistol I've seen.'(Or whatever his exact wording was.)
That marine was probably a civil war soldier or earlier, who would only have been familiar with revolvers. I doubt the technology we see in the show is older than the semi automatic pistol.
If we wanted to date Fromville older than this, we can get into things I can't prove.
A picture of the talismans. When I first watched the show, my first thought was that these symbols were Rongorongo because of the human shapes. Then, I started thinking about writing systems that would more plausibly have been in North America at some time. Looking more into it, these look like they could be Icelandic staves. I am neither Icelandic nor am I an anthropologist, but I feel like there isn't enough discussion on who would have carved these so I'll try to at least say enough to get a discussion going.
Icelanders used to carve symbols into a form of stone called lignite. Lignite is a soft stone which, from google image searches, often has this same blueish-gray color. If these are Icelandic staves, they probably date back to around 1000 AD, the approximate possible date when Icelandic people settled Newfoundland. The middle of the talisman looks like the rune ᛝ and the dashes along the outside look like ᚫ, but with an extra notch. The only examples I was able to find with three notches were on this runic calendar dated around the 12th or 13th century AD found in Finland.
\"Sami Runic Calendar\" showing a character resembling ᚫ but with an extra notch. Look in the bottom right if you don't see it. I have no idea what the significance of the extra notch is, or if its something that was only done on calendars. If the talismans are calendars, obviously the circular shape is significant. This could also be an older form of the rune, or any number of other possibilities because languages and writing systems are hard, constantly evolving, and I am not an anthropologist. Also, there are only so many shapes you can make when carving notches into a rock and the talismans don't necessarily have to be Icelandic just because they look like some runes.
One counterargument to all of this is that this same symbol appears on the cave writings by the monsters.
Victor showing the cave drawings. My theory, assuming the talismans are Icelandic, is that the domain of Fromville either used to extend to Newfoundland 1000 years ago, or that some Vinlanders(which is what I will call Icelandic settlers in Newfoundland, I don't know if this is a real word) were blown off course and found their way into its domain. Obviously, if Fromland is over 1000 years old, sticking to the modern day boundaries of the continental United States would be extremely strange. It would also be extremely strange that there is evidence of Vinlanders but 0 evidence of any First Nations people despite Fromville being 1000 years old.
Regardless, these Vinlanders found themselves trapped, much like our modern day protagonists. They desperately designed staves that they hoped could ward off the creatures, and eventually someone managed to make one that worked. These staves were then passed down or dug up by more and more generations of Fromlanders, until eventually Boyd found them. Meanwhile, the monsters, either by somehow assimilating humans or through their observation of the talismans, came to draw these symbols themselves.
My theory on why the stave worked is that it could say some equivalent of "I'm not afraid of you", the same thing Darrel says to the creatures surrounding the bus.
The stick with three notches could also be depicting trees or waves, and not be a rune at all. On the cave drawing, surrounding the boats and spaced randomly, they look like waves. On the talisman, evenly spaced in a ring around the human figures, they look like trees
Regardless, if any of this holds up, a healthy majority of historians believe that the United States Federal Government was not functional or existent in 1000AD. At the very least, their technology was extremely limited.

2023.06.02 13:01 House_of_Suns /r/QOTSA Official Band of the Week 22: ZZ TOP
Sometimes a band gets so big that they somehow outshine themselves. They reach a point in their career where it does not matter if they release a new album or not; fans just want to see them tour. No one gave a damn that Led Zeppelin had not released a new album since the 1970’s; everyone just wanted to see them play again at the O2 Arena in 2007. When The Who played the Super Bowl halftime show in 2010 they had only released one new album in 28 years, and no one cared. And no one cares that Guns & Roses aren’t making new music. They still packed arenas to see
how much cake Axl had packed into himself. We’re going to take a dive into a blues power trio from down south who have zero need to release any new music, since their recording career stretches back over five decades. They had amazing and groundbreaking success in the ‘70s, the ‘80s, and the ‘90s before hitting the max level. Instead of playing to win, they now play for fun. Their sexually charged lyrics and videos inspired generations of teens to both dress better and worry about their fly. And you can bet that their fuzzy, bluesy tight sound had a huge impact on our very own desert dwellers.
It’s time for us to take a walk with That Little Ol’ Band from Texas. This week’s featured artist is the legendary
ZZ TOP About Them The Power Trio is a tested and true format for a rock band. Lots of examples come to mind:
Cream. Rush. The Police. Biffy Clyro. King Buffalo. Them Crooked Vultures. (Wait a sec. Just three members? Clearly, not everything is bigger in Texas.)
There is a member joke there somewhere, but I just can’t get it to come. Hmm. Perhaps it will come if you play with it a bit.
Hey!
Stop that. Get your mind out of the gutter.
ZZ Top’s original and founding member was William Frederick Gibbons. Born in Houston in 1949, the front man was originally a drummer but, after studying with Tito Puente in New York City, picked up the guitar at age 13. His dad was a musician in show business, which allowed Billy to get an insider’s view of the industry. By the late ‘60s, he had been in and founded a number of bands and had even befriended the late great James Marshall Hendrix. One of his first bands, a psychedelic/art house band called
The Moving Sidewalks, toured with the Jimi Hendrix Experience. This meant that Gibbons was actually mentored by Snagglepuss himself. They also toured with The Doors, where Gibbons saw the legendary self-destructive band somehow manage to rise above conflict and make music every night. The Moving Sidewalks generated a following all of its own with a couple of hit songs, and things seemed to be headed in the right direction.
Things were going absolutely great until bassist Don Summers and keyboard player Tom Moore were drafted into the army to fight in Vietnam. Don't you just
love the ‘60s? Gibbons and drummer Dan Mitchell added a new keyboard player, Lanier Greg, and tried to make another run at it. But the chemistry was all wrong. Gibbons rechristened the band as ZZ Top (an homage to BB King), and declared that he wanted more of a straight up rock approach than the
art-house kaleidoscopic sound. Gibbons, Mitchell, and Greg (isn’t it weird when
last names are also first names too?) recorded the single
Salt Lick in 1969. This generated a bunch of interest and a recording contract. Decisions over the direction of the band ensued and it quickly became clear that Mitchell and Greg did not agree with Gibbons’ hard rock approach. That ended up being a poor life decision for them, but a great one for a couple of other guys.
Clearly, Gibbons needed a new rhythm section.
Fortunately, he found a package deal.
Dusty Hill and Frank Beard - also both born in 1949 - had been playing together on the Dallas-Houston-Fort Worth circuit in a number of bands, including
The Warlocks, The Cellar Dwellers, and a fake cover band called
The Zombies. Both the Duster and the (then ironically) beardless Beard also heard the siren call of rock and roll. Hill was classically trained and was an accomplished cello player before moving to his signature bass. Frank ‘Rube’ Beard appears to have been born with drumsticks in his hands (which I imagine might have been uncomfortable for his mom).
Beard joined the band first, along with bassist Billy Ethridge, who had played with Stevie Ray Vaughn. Ethridge balked at signing a contract and so joined Mitchell and Greg on the list of ZZ Top’s former members. Their lineup was set. Hill and Beard anchored the band in a rock-solid, tight, bluesy fashion. Gibbons meshed perfectly with this duo, and his Hendrix-inspired guitar work was on another level. Hill provided backing vocals, and Gibbons’ low throaty growl was an impressive counterpoint to his soaring fretwork. The talent was all there; now they just needed to record some music.
But success was not instantaneous, not by a
long shot. Their first album - appropriately called
ZZ Top’s First Album - gives insight into who the band were to become. In this 1971 release, you can hear their raw sound. The record peaked at 201 on the charts, and had only one single -
(Somebody Else Been) Shaking Your Tree. It did give them material to go out and tour. The boys gelled on that tour and went back into the studio with renewed energy, and emerged with 1972’s
Rio Grande Mud. The disc was a step forward in refining their sound. The album almost cracked the top 100, and the only single -
Francine - went all the way to number 69.
Nice. But the band knew that their third album,
Tres Hombres, was something special. It is the epitome of Southern Rock: bluesy, fast paced, sexy, and irreverent, it is just over half an hour of pure magic. And while the album went gold and peaked at number 8 on the charts and is worth your time, it was one particular single that rocketed them to stardom. You know it and you love it, and a-how-how-how-how:
La Grange. It is still in heavy rotation on classic rock stations today. And why not? The song is an
absolute banger of boogie woogie blues, written about a visit to a whorehouse. What’s not to love?
La Grange propelled them to popularity. Tours sold out. Venues got bigger and bigger. 1975’s follow up album,
Fandango!, was half live album (with some covers) and half new material - like an EP with bonus tracks. They covered the Elvis Presley classic
Jailhouse Rock, Willie Dixon’s
Mellow Down Easy, and John Lee Hooker’s
Long Distance Boogie. The boys had rock and blues chops, and had 5 years of touring experience. These were bold statements that cemented their musicality as well as honoring their roots. But side two of the disc had another track that you’ve come to love. You ain’t asking for much: You’re just lookin’ for some
Tush. Tush was the perfect sexually charged follow up to ensure that they were not one-hit wonders. It was written in a ten-minute spasm of creativity at a sound check, and has gone on to be one of their most popular songs.
While
Tush topped the charts, ZZ Top went back into the studio to record their full length follow up, 1976’s
Tejas. The name of the album means ‘friends’ in the Indigenous Caddo language, and was the basis for the name of the state. You know what that means? It means that the name of the state is ‘Friends’. Just like the ‘90s sitcom.
Don’t mess with Friends. Anyways, this was an album of experimentation for the band, and unlike its predecessor it came out half baked at best. Billy Gibbons has called it a transition album. What actually happened is the band transitioned into a hiatus from touring and recording, taking some significant time off. They had recorded five albums in six years and spent virtually all their time on the road. The latest effort was just not up to their standards and was a step back. It also completed their recording contract.
What was the solution to this burn out?
Facial hair of course.
The boys took a few years off before landing another recording contract, this time with Warner. Over those months, both Gibbons and Hill grew what would become their signature long
‘Texas Goatee’ beards. Frank Beard did not grow a beard (though he did finally succumb to peer pressure from his bandmates in 2013, and his is much more neatly trimmed). So while they were resting/relaxing/getting their groove back/aligning their chakras or whatever, they also started to reinvent their signature sound as the world moved towards a decade of legendary excess.
The first step on this reinvention journey was 1979’s
Degüello. The title literally means ‘decapitation’ but idiomatically refers to a
fight to the death. Clearly, the band decided to tackle their transition head on. The album was not as successful as
Tres Hombres or
Fandango!, but it was not the flop that
Tejas was. It did spawn a couple of singles -
I Thank You (which was a cover) and the signature hit
Cheap Sunglasses. Both are staples at ZZ Top concerts to this day.
Degüello was quickly followed up in 1981 by the album
El Loco. This was really the first time ZZ Top incorporated a synthesizer into their sound. As you know, the synth was THE new wave sound of the 1980s. Gods help us,
keytars were once popular. But Gibbons, Hill, and Beard did not abandon their edge. The single
Pearl Necklace was an immensely popular innuendo laced tune from this album. And no, I will not explain what a pearl necklace is to you.
Ask your mom.
Over the course of their first seven albums, ZZ Top had steadily grown in popularity and become a truly extraordinary live band. More than a decade of touring together meant that they had not just cut their teeth. They had found the
Tooth Fairy, beaten her senseless, and added fangs to their jaws. They were ready to tackle whatever came their way.
Their huge breakthrough coincided with the birth of
music videos and MTV. 1983’s
Eliminator was an absolute monster of an album. ZZ Top were everywhere. They completely embraced the Music Video as a medium and became pioneers in this new genre. They branded their band with a
1933 fire-engine red Ford Coupe, which was on the cover of the album. They even had a signature hand gesture that they used as the car went by. The car belonged to Billy Gibbons and embodied his hot rod obsessions. It was featured in the videos for
Gimme All Your Lovin’, Sharp Dressed Man, and
Legs. Other singles from the album included
Got me Under Pressure and
TV Dinners. Eliminator is still the band’s most successful album. They were at the absolute height of their popularity with a massive audience. No doubt the 10-year-old Joshua Michael Homme watched those videos on a small screen in the California desert, little knowing that he would one day collaborate with Gibbons.
Seeking to capitalize on the popularity, the band went back into the studio and released
Afterburner in 1985. It featured the signature hot rod on the cover and spawned two more singles -
Sleeping Bag and
Velcro Fly. Afterburner was not an innovative album by any stretch of the imagination. It simply built on the success of
Eliminator and replicated the sound.
If you blended the two albums together it would be very difficult for a novice fan to guess which song came from which disc. But hell, when you release the most popular album of your career and are earning millions of dollars for that sound, it is not time to mess with success. Or with
Texas. Or with Friends (though
Ross was a pain in the ass, IMHO).
That desire to not screw up a good thing was also evident in their next release, the retrospective re-release
Six Pack. This was a great way to earn some bucks with a simple repackaging of existing tracks - I’m looking at you,
K-Tel… - and introducing them to another generation of fans. This was not a bad thing at all - you gotta get that green whenever you can, because fame can be fleeting.
ZZ Top closed out the decade by going Back to the Future. Literally. They appeared in the third installment of the Michael J. Fox trilogy
as the olde-timey house band (complete with rotating guitars) in the saloon scene. The single and signature song from the movie,
Doubleback, appeared on their 1990 release
Recycler. The album spawned two more singles:
My Head’s in Mississippi and
Concrete and Steel. Recycler was not as successful as its predecessors, but it did effectively
max level the band. In the 1970’s they were a scuffling bar band that hit it big. In the 1980’s they were one of the most popular bands of the MTV generation. And in the 1990’s they achieved superstardom. They had hit the level where it truly no longer mattered if they ever released new material again. They could simply tour on their back catalogue alone and sell out stadiums.
It is clear that the band realized this as well. In the thirty years since
Recycler came out, they have released five albums of new material:
Antenna in 1994,
Rhythmeen in 1996,
XXX in 1999,
Mescalero in 2003 and the critically acclaimed and
Rick Rubin produced
La Futura in 2012. This was equivalent to their output in their first six years.
In contrast, they have released no less than eight greatest hits albums, cover albums and live albums in the same time span.
Greatest Hits came out in 1992.
One Foot in the Blues was released in 1994. The massive compilation
Chrome, Smoke & BBQ came out in 2003, and is a fantastic place to start if you are a new fan.
Rancho Texicano was released in 2004,
Live from Texas came out in 2008, and
Double Down Live hit shelves in 2009.
Live at Montreaux came out in 2013 and
Tonite at Midnight: Live Greatest Hits from Around the World was released in 2016.
As recently as 2019, there were rumors that a new album was in the works for our Septuagenarian heroes. Lord knows the boys from Texas have nothing left to prove to anyone.
It was then that tragedy struck. Dusty Hill had to leave the band during a tour in 2021. The reason given was a hip injury. His guitar tech, Elwood Francis, filled in. Shockingly, Hill died at home at the age of 72 just five days after leaving the tour.
Fans were shocked and mourned the stalwart bassist. Per his wishes - and it seems he knew something wasn’t quite right - ZZ Top did not break up. Francis replaced Hill on bass, and the band soldiered on. In 2022, they released
Raw, a soundtrack for a 2019 documentary about them. This was Hill’s final release.
You can still catch them on tour. They are going to be out there this summer, touring with Lynyrd Skynyrd, for something they are calling ‘The Sharp Dressed Simple Man’ Tour.
Go buy some tickets. Don’t miss your chance to see a truly iconic band before they are gone.
Links to QOTSA The
Reverend Billy F. Gibbons was a big part of the
Lullabies to Paralyze album by our Desert Dwellers. He played guitar and provided backing vocals on
Burn the Witch. He was co-lead vocalist and lead guitar on the QotSA cover of
Precious and Grace, which he originally released as a ZZ Top tune on the
Tres Hombres album. He also provided the guitar stylings for
Like a Drug. But the connections don't stop there. Billy sang the lead vocal track on the recent Desert Sessions tune
Move Together, and he played guitar on
Noses in Roses, Forever. What may be most important to QotSA fans is that Gibbons was the first person, almost two years ago, who hinted that Queens were working on a new album.
And now we know he was right. Never doubt a Reverend.

2023.06.02 12:49 JoshAsdvgi The Great Serpent and the Flood
| The Great Serpent and the Flood From Maine and Nova Scotia to the Rocky Mountains, Indians told stories about the Great Serpent. More than a century ago the serpent was considered to be "a genuine spirit of evil." Some version of the story of the Great Flood of long ago, as recounted here, is told around the world. Nanabozho (Nuna-bozo, accented on bozo) was the hero of many stories told by the Chippewa Indians. At one time they lived on the shores of Lake Superior, in what are now the states of Minnesota and Wisconsin and the province of Ontario. One day when Nanabozho returned to his lodge after a long journey, he missed his young cousin who lived with him. He called the cousin's name but heard no answer. Looking around on the sand for tracks, Nanabozho was startled by the trail of the Great Serpent. He then knew that his cousin had been seized by his enemy. Nanabozho picked up his bow and arrows and followed the track of the serpent. He passed the great river, climbed mountains, and crossed over valleys until he came to the shores of a deep and gloomy lake. It is now called Manitou Lake, Spirit Lake, and also the Lake of Devils. The trail of the Great Serpent led to the edge of the water. Nanabozho could see, at the bottom of the lake, the house of the Great Serpent. It was filled with evil spirits, who were his servants and his companions. Their forms were monstrous and terrible. Most of them, like their master, resembled spirits. In the centre of this horrible group was the Great Serpent himself, coiling his terrifying length around the cousin of Nanabozho. The head of the Serpent was red as blood. His fierce eyes glowed like fire. His entire body was armed with hard and glistening scales of every color and shade. Looking down on these twisting spirits of evil, Nanabozho made up his mind that he would get revenge on them for the death of his cousin. He said to the clouds, "Disappear!" And the clouds went out of sight. "Winds, be still at once!" And the winds became still. When the air over the lake of evil spirits had become stagnant, Nanabozho said to the sun, "Shine over the lake with all the fierceness you can. Make the water boil." In these ways, thought Nanabozho, he would force the Great Serpent to seek the cool shade of the trees growing on the shores of the lake. There he would seize the enemy and get revenge. After giving his orders, Nanabozho took his bow and arrows and placed himself near the spot where he thought the serpents would come to enjoy the shade. Then he changed himself into the broken stump of a withered tree. The winds became still, the air stagnant, and the sun shot hot rays from a cloudless sky. In time, the water of the lake became troubled, and bubbles rose to the surface. The rays of the sun had penetrated to the home of the serpents. As the water bubbled and foamed, a serpent lifted his head above the centre of the lake and gazed around the shores. Soon another serpent came to the surface. Both listened for the footsteps of Nanabozho, but they heard him nowhere. "Nanabozho is sleeping," they said to one another. And then they plunged beneath the waters, which seemed to hiss as they closed over the evil spirits. Not long after, the lake became more troubled. Its water boiled from its very depths, and the hot waves dashed wildly against the rocks on its banks. Soon the Great Serpent came slowly to the surface of the water and moved toward the shore. His blood-red crest glowed. The reflection from his scales was blinding--as blinding as the glitter of a sleet-covered forest beneath the winter sun. He was followed by all the evil spirits. So great was their number that they soon covered the shores of the lake. When they saw the broken stump of the withered tree, they suspected that it might be one of the disguises of Nanabozho. They knew his cunning. One of the serpents approached the stump, wound his tail around it, and tried to drag it down into the lake. Nanabozho could hardly keep from crying aloud, for the tail of the monster prickled his sides. But he stood firm and was silent. The evil spirits moved on. The Great Serpent glided into the forest and wound his many coils around the trees. His companions also found shade--all but one. One remained near the shore to listen for the footsteps of Nanabozho. From the stump, Nanabozho watched until all the serpents were asleep and the guard was intently looking in another direction. Then he silently drew an arrow from his quiver, placed it in his bow, and aimed it at the heart of the Great Serpent. It reached its mark. With a howl that shook the mountains and startled the wild beasts in their caves, the monster awoke. Followed by its terrified companions, which also were howling with rage and terror, the Great Serpent plunged into the water. At the bottom of the lake there still lay the body of Nanabozho's cousin. In their fury the serpents tore it into a thousand pieces. His shredded lungs rose to the surface and covered the lake with whiteness. The Great Serpent soon knew that he would die from his wound, but he and his companions were determined to destroy Nanabozho. They caused the water of the lake to swell upward and to pound against the shore with the sound of many thunders. Madly the flood rolled over the land, over the tracks of Nanabozho, carrying with it rocks and trees. High on the crest of the highest wave floated the wounded Great Serpent. His eyes glared around him, and his hot breath mingled with the hot breath of his many companions. Nanabozho, fleeing before the angry waters, thought of his Indian children. He ran through their villages, shouting, "Run to the mountaintops! The Great Serpent is angry and is flooding the earth! Run! Run!" The Indians caught up their children and found safety on the mountains. Nanabozho continued his flight along the base of the western hills and then up a high mountain beyond Lake Superior, far to the north. There he found many men and animals that had escaped from the flood that was already covering the valleys and plains and even the highest hills. Still the waters continued to rise. Soon all the mountains were under the flood, except the high one on which stood Nanabozho. There he gathered together timber and made a raft. Upon it the men and women and animals with him placed themselves. Almost immediately the mountaintop disappeared from their view, and they floated along on the face of the waters. For many days they floated. At long last, the flood began to subside. Soon the people on the raft saw the trees on the tops of the mountains. Then they saw the mountains and hills, then the plains and the valleys. When the water disappeared from the land, the people who survived learned that the Great Serpent was dead and that his companions had returned to the bottom of the lake of spirits. There they remain to this day. For fear of Nanabozho, they have never dared to come forth again. submitted by JoshAsdvgi to Native_Stories [link] [comments] |
2023.06.02 12:47 JoshAsdvgi THE GREAT MEDICIME DANCE
| THE GREAT MEDICIME DANCE [CHEYENNE] The Tsis-tsistas people have danced the great medicine dance for a long, long time, longer than anyone can remember or even imagine. The dance represents the making of this universe and was conceived and taught to the people by the Creator, Maheo, and his helper, Great Roaring Thunder. It portrays the making of the sun, moon, and stars; of rain, wind, and snow; of Grandmother Earth and the blue sky above her; of the mountains and rivers; of all living things, big and small. The dance is performed especially in times of starvation, distress, and widespread death. This, our most sacred ceremony, was brought to us by the Sutai medicine man Horns Standing Up, under the guidance of the Creator himself. Long ago, when the earth and the people dwelling upon it were young, our tribe was starving. The earth itself was starving, for no rain was falling. Plants and trees wilted. Many rivers dried up. The animals were dying of hunger and thirst. The Cheyenne had nothing to eat except some old, dried corn and their dogs, which used to carry their packs in those days before we had horses. There were not many dogs remaining, and very little corn. So the people left their old hunting grounds, left the land which had nourished them for generations, and started off in search of food. They went north, where the drought was less severe, but found little game and no buffalo at all. One evening they came to a stream in which water still flowed. The leaders and old chiefs sat down beside this stream and sadly watched the thin, weary people pitching their tipis. Then it came to the chiefs, as in a vision, what ought to be done. They ordered all the men to go to the women, each man to the woman he felt most attracted to, and beg her to give him something to eat. The men did as they had been directed, and each chose the woman who was to feed him. Among the warriors was a young medicine man. He went up to a beautiful woman who happened to be the wife of the head chief. She set a bowl of dog soup before him and waited for him to finish eating. Then he said: "I have chosen you from among all women to help me save our people. I want you to go north with me, as the medicine spirits have commanded. Take your dog teams and bring supplies for a long journey-now, right away!" Though she was the chief's wife, the woman did what the medicine man had asked. She was ready to travel in no time, and the two left unobserved in the dark of night. Two days and one night they traveled without stopping, urging on the dogs who carried the travois with the tipi poles and hides and other things needed for survival. At last they rested. The man told the woman to put up the lodge and to prepare two beds of soft, fragrant sage for them to sleep on. He said: "Make the tipi face the rising sun." He also told her that Maheo, the Creator, had sent him a vision revealing that the two of them must go north and bring back the great medicine lodge, Maheo's symbol of the universe, and with it a sacred ceremony which they would teach to the Cheyenne. "In my vision," he said, "Maheo promised that if the people accept and perform this holy ritual, the rains will fall again and the earth rejoice, the plants will bring forth green leaves and fruit, and the buffalo will return." And so they traveled, the woman every evening pitching the tipi facing east and preparing the beds of sage on opposite sides of the tipi, the man sleeping on his bed, the woman on hers. One night she said: "How is this? You made me run away with you, but you never approach me as man approaches woman. Why did you make me go with you, then?" He answered: "We must abstain from embracing until we enter the great mountain of the north and receive the sacred medicine dance. After we emerge from the mountain, I shall embrace you in a renewal-of-alI-life ceremony by which people will continue to be born, generation after generation, through the woman-power of perpetuation." At last they came to a vast, dark forest from whose center rose a cloud wreathed mountain reaching far into the sky. Beyond the mountain they' saw a lake of unending waters. They came to a large rock at the foot of the mountain, rolled the rock aside, and discovered an entrance. They went inside the mountain and, closing the opening behind them, found themselves in the mountain's great medicine lodge, which was wonderful to behold. Today the medicine tipi which the Cheyenne put up for their sun dances at Bear Butte is an imitation of that sacred mountain lodge. The young man and the woman heard voices coming out of the mountaintop-the voices of Maheo the Creator and his helper Great Roaring Thunder. Instructing them in the holy ways to perform the sacred ceremony, Maheo spoke for four days. Then they had learned all there was to know about the dance, the Creator, said: Now you will leave and teach the people what I have taught you. And if they perform the ceremonies in the right way, they will be favored for generations to come. The sun, the moon, the stars will move again in harmony. Roaring Thunder will bring soothing rain and winds. Corn and chokecherries will ripen again. Wild turnips and healing herbs will grow once more. All the animals will emerge from behind this mountain, herds of buffalo and antelope among them, and follow you back to your village and your people. Take this sacred hat, and wear it whenever you perform the sun dance. With this will control the animals-the buffalo, the antelope, the elk, the deer-who give themselves to the people for food. The Tsis-tsistas shall never be hungry again, but live in plenty. Put on this sacred buffalo hat as you leave, and Grandmother Earth will smile upon you forever. And so the young medicine man of the Sutai and the good-looking woman left the mountain through the secret passage. As they rolled the rock aside and emerged, buffalo without numbers streamed out of the mountain behind them, and the earth brought forth green shoots. Herbs and plants sprouted under a gentle rain, and the earth was like new, glistening in freshness. Thus the man and woman walked sacredly, clad in buffalo robes painted red, and the medicine man wore his horned cap. Their dogs walked before them, dragging their travois poles, while behind them followed a thundering herd of buffalo, and after these came all manner of animals, male and female, big and small. At the day's end the man and the woman put up their tipi and lay down on their beds of sage to rest, and all the animals settled down to rest also. And at some time during this journey back to their village, the man and the woman did lovingly what was necessary- to ensure renewal and continuation of life through woman-power. Each morning during their travels, the man sang the sacred songs which the voice of Maheo had taught him. At last one evening they arrived near the stream where the people were still camped, awaiting their return. The medicine man and the woman did not go into the village at once, but spent the night outside. In the morning the medicine man put on issiwun and entered the camp, accompanied by the woman. He told the people of all that had passed, told them that he had brought them the knowledge of the great medicine lodge and the great sacred dance, the songs and ceremonies that went with it, and above all, issiwun, the sacred buffalo hat which had the power to control the wandering of the animals. He told the people that if they performed the sacred sun dance, they would have plenty of buffalo to eat and would never suffer hunger again. The people put up the medicine lodge according to the young man's instructions, painted their bodies in a sacred manner, and sang the right songs. The children made clay figures of buffalo, antelopes, and elk and brought them into the lodge as a symbol of life's renewal Since then, whenever the little figures are placed inside the Medicine lodge during the dance, some of those animals will come near to gaze upon the sacred tipi, and some of their animal power will linger on. In the same way, our old friends, the Sioux people, fasten the figures of a man and a bison, both cut from buffalo hide, to their sacred sun dance pole. Then an eagle will come in and circle above the dancers to bless them. Thus the Tsis-tsistas people performed the great medicine ceremony for the first time, and all was well again. And the people named the young medicine man Horns Standing Up, because the sacred hat has two horns at each side. -Told by Josie Limpy and Mrs. Medicine Bull, with the help of an interpreter, at Birney, Montana, in 1972. submitted by JoshAsdvgi to Native_Stories [link] [comments] |
