2023.03.21 21:06 cryosneasel I can't get my 15 year old dog to stop destroying my house and throwing her water bowl

My dog is 15 (golden retriever / lab mix) and over the past few months, she started to get worse and worse about this. She was never like this. My mom did have to watch her for 2 years when I moved to a not-pet-friendly apartment, and she was perfectly fine at her house.
Every 30 minutes or so, she will throw shoes all over the living room, take the pillows and cushions off the couch, slide the ottoman to the middle of the room, etc. She also will spill her water and food dish on purpose and get watefood everywhere. I even got to the point I had to BOLT my vents to the wall because she ripped out the screws and threw those all over the place too.
The water is the one that annoys me the most because its a mess to clean up. I have tried 3 different bowls, and she has managed to knock all of them over. I was considering using wall mounted bowls, but frankly, I am pretty sure she will just rip them out of the wall.
Everywhere I see, says this is boredom, but I just legitimately don't know what to do about that. I work from home, so I am with her all the time. She refuses to play with toys. Eventually I had to put those away because I was sick of picking them up. She would dump the basket and then walk away.
I THINK she just wants to keep going for walks, but I have gotten to the point of doing like 6+ walks a day with her, and that is just not feasible anymore. It's getting in the way of my work. I'm in and out of meetings all day every day and I have to keep stepping away to deal with her. I only take her on small 5-10 minute walks. I am afraid to do anymore, because she starts to limp if they are too long.
I also want to mention, she only does this while I am home. If for some reason, I leave for the day, she just sleeps and is a perfect angel.
I have tried kongs with peanut butter / treats as well, and she will take the 5 minutes to suck out the treats, then go back to destroying the house. I can't even keep it clean, if I pick up the pillows and stuff, 10 minutes later everything is scattered again.

2023.03.21 21:05 PocketMew649 Scamming Vet killed 5 out of my 6 puppies so I got him into Jail for 12 years.

For years I considered my vet a good person. Seemed smart, talked to the animals like they were children and even called them babies in fron of us. He was specially profesional with the language he used even if he sometimes used the incorrect terms (I studied medicine for 4 years so I just assumed he was just showing off a little to impress us and never corrected him as I'm a lawyer now and it didn't seem correct) but he ended up being something way worse than I ever thought.
I trusted him with all my pets even if he was a lot more expensive than other vets (like 3x the cost but hey, my dogs would pay that for me if they could right?).
He got the puppies from my family (6 puppies) and insisted on giving them the parvovirus vaccine himself even though we knew that the vaccines should be free if I went to a public health center (because they are free in our country) and he asked for like the equivalent of 600 dollars. So we paid him and while we were there in the clinic a random dude asked if we were going to sell the dogs later as he wanted to buy the only female one we got (Lola). We told him they were all going to family members but thanked him for the offer anyway.
But lo lo and behold close to a month later... 4 out of the 6 puppies got green diarrhea and when we brought them to the vet... they were positive for Parvovirus. That's literally statistically impossible but and I was very confused since they all had the vaccine but well. You can't argue "statistically impossible" against the sick puppies right?

So we, not knowing what to do. Brought them to him.
He started treating them and did tests on the other two and originally they were fine but then he asked for one that was not having any symptoms (Lola) and fuck me. She was sick as well and we were all a little bit confused because... she didn't look sick, had no diarrhea (Parvovirus on the other dogs gave them a green diarrhea that lasted for their wholes rest of their lives), and she was in an exceptionally good mood, the other dogos were not at all while sick.
I didn't find this fishy until he called us a couple day later to say "She died and we're very sorry". We told him we were going to pick her up and he told us "She was a biohazard so we cremated her without asking, you need to pay us another 300 dollars btw".
We were livid, and we found it fishy that the one that had no symptoms died so suddenly and was cremated in a hurry... But we still considered he had never failed us so he must be telling the truth right?.
Then... 3+1 out the 6 dogs died and only one was left alive and he told us that indeed we were going to get the bodies of those because he didn't want to impose on us now but he could bury them for a cost after we gave our goodbyes and we agreed as well.
The last sick doggy was surviving and he told us he was going to keep him in observation because he was not eating and the diarrea was too much to bear and he needed the extra care and we agreed.
I'm very practical and I read dogs get better if you visit them so I indeed went to visit the dog every single day for the 9 days he was with him and took careful note of what was his weight, his mood and how much he "ate" (he was charging us 3-5 bowls of wet food every day but a couple of days he went to the fridge to get an already open can and even though I was with the dog for literal hours he didn't ate more than a spoonful).
So suddenly, the doggy had a weight drop of almost 1 pound (more than 20% his weight at that moment) and he told us "he is not eating anymore and we will have to give him iv food supplements, also visiting is not allowed anymore.
So I said fuck it and called another vet and he told me that it was impossible a dog that small was eating so much food and still losing weight... and that almost all the weight loss had to be from water and he probably was not using the correct IVs or didn't even cared enough for him and didn't gave him enough water.
So we call him and tell him we're taking him to another vet and he suddenly goes "Oh, I was about to call you. He died A COUPLE MINUTES AGO and we're cremating him as well because he was so sick and we have other dogs near so he could be a hazard". At this point it's important to say he was charging us over 500 dollars for the care of the dog each day. As a family we could afford it but it was still not an easy bill to pay considering how many puppies and how much time each of them he was there.
I told him to fuck off and that he would not get a cent from us if we didn't get a body and he should not care because I was already on my way.
So behold the fucker told us he already sent her to the crematorium and he would call but it was likely the process already started... All of this from a "we're about to call you".
So I asked the number of the crematorium myself and after some struggle he gives it to me and can you imagine how small the world is. The owner is someone I worked in a case some years ago and he remembered me.
I ask him about the dogs and he tells me he indeed received the dog... YESTERDAY but he called to get the dog picked up a day before. He also told me he does business with him and he asked for the bill to be given with TODAY date on it and he thinking nothing of it gave it to him. After a couple more asking around Lola was also never picked up nor delivered and there were not any cremations coming from the veterinary for almost 6 months before the other one.
This means the dog has probably been dead for at least 2 days AND that Lola never died.
I will not try to make the case sound as exciting as it could have been but in short. He tried to argue against the evidence and even somehow produced a bill from a crematorium from another city to argue he did indeed send Lola there... but neither me the DA nor the judge fell for it. The vet tried arguing against the scamming arguments saying he charged $600 for the work of injecting the vaccine BUT as I investigated... he never bought the vaccine nor had it delivered from the state (as it seems the state delivers them free of charge to vets as well) and most likely he only had 2 left and one went to Lola and another to the Surviving, never sick, puppy "Pepe". The stolen puppy went nowhere as we had not sufficient evidence she was still alive (as we don't know the dude that bought her) so we had to accept to losing her but we were still hopeful she was still alive.
A couple weeks before the trial ended and in a last ditch effort the wife called me to ask me to drop the charges and offered me to pay me literally less money than I spent with him with the puppies he killed and well... I told her I would think about it and blocked her number the second she hanged up.
Long Story short, I didn't get my money back. But the vet definitely got the money's worth when he was sentenced to 12 years of inconmutable jail time for Fraud and Animal Abuse between others. He never accepted to have sold Lola but the person that bought her called me like 6 months later to tell me she was the one that got her and he actually never got to pay the vet for her since he was in Jail and he just gave an advance and we agreed that he could keep her as long as I got a Puppy when she had any.
TL;DR: A veterinarian tried to scam me, charged me for medicine, food and care he never gave my puppies and eventually from a litter of 6: stole 1 puppy, killed another 4. Tried to overcharge me every step of the way AND was eventually jailed for 12 years.

the goods
DD MK18 upper from Brownells with the dark brown handguard and .07 diameter gas port. This includes the head spaced DD bcg, DD barrel, and BCM/Vltor CH. < 300 rounds fired through it. This is currently rattle canned but the underneath, supposedly there is no salt. (catch and release from here) I would prefer not to split, but willing to split if I have to. Upper must go first. SV:$950 TV: $1050
Trijicon Accupower 1x4 SFP on an ADM Recon H QD mount (1.93 height). Low salt, but it does have some lights scratches on the body and dings on the caps from being used. This does have the original box. It's extremely large, but I can send it if you want it. 223/55 gr BDC reticle. 30mm tube and green crosshair. I will split this no problem. This thing is super clear and a super nice optic.
SV:$600 TV:$620. Scope alone $400. $200 for the mount. Mount has approx 300 rounds through it.
27 brand new 30 round Tapco AK mags, one used pmag, two used CAI mag (steel reinforced lips), one used 40 rounder of unknown origin, It looks to be Bulgarian since it has the three little stars. I would prefer to get rid of this as a lot to avoid logistics issues. They are great range mags, but I have no use for them since I got out of the AK game. I have no idea what these are worth since they are no longer in business. $250 SV:TV? (No shipping to ban states)

Items I am interested in trading for:
Trijicon VCOG SCO 1-8. 100% has to be the SCO with the Larue mount and christmas tree reticle. If you have one of the SCOs, I will straight up buy it from you cash if you don't buy/trade any of my stuff.
Trijicon ACOG TA02 red crosshair reticle.

2023.03.21 20:51 razaky201 Deciding between 2 properties for purchase - which would you recommend?

I am torn between 2 options both of which are 2 bedroom co-op apartments in NYC. Both neighborhoods are kind of similar, no clear differences. Both are about a 30 min commute to my job. We are a family of 3 (2 adults, 1 baby).
Option A:
- $276,000 Price, fully renovated
- 850 sq. feet
- Monthly Maintenance of $838 includes all utilities
- has elevator, 15 mins from train
- On sale, 25% of profit is taken by the co-op, leaving seller with 75% of the profit
Option B:
- $245,000 Price, will require $10,000 of renovations (so basically $255,000)
- 1050 sq. feet
- Monthly Maintenance of $835 includes all utilities except electric
- no elevator in building (2 flights up), 5 mins from train
- On sale, there is no flip tax and no profit sharing required with co-op
We do prefer Option A as even though it is smaller, it has a great layout and newly renovated. However the thing bugging me is that the co-op will take 25% of the profit if we decide to sell in future.
Option B has some annoying things in that we will have to hire contractors to do renovations etc before moving in but then no fees upon selling.
Any advice? We would plan to stay in the unit for at least 15-20 years.

2023.03.21 20:48 VolkerBach How Not to Eat Fish (15th c.)

How Not to Eat Fish (15th c.)
https://www.culina-vetus.de/2023/03/21/wittenwilers-wedding-feast-v-a-heroic-death/
Another piece of the feast in Der Ring), illustrating the dangers of eating fish improperly.
Schlaraffenland as envisioned by Pieter Breughel the Elder c. 1567, courtesy of wikimedia commons
Then they started on the fish that were on the table. Straub (a server) wanted to try them first (chredenzet haben), but he saw such grasping and chasing over the platter that he chose instead to grab a piece for himself. He was lucky it was the largest, and how quickly it was gone! Who would have waited for their neighbour to be served first at this hour? There was no time for that, I should think. The servers would have cut the fish apart for them, but they (the guests) could not wait for it. The dish seemed too tempting. Reuschindhell (lit. rush-into-hell) grasped a particularly slimy head piece that seemed good to him nonetheless. He thought to himself: “If you are gnawing the head, that already means you are too late, but if you leave it be, you have no enjoyment at all and have come in vain.” Thus he drew it through his mouth three times and laid it in front of himself again, as complete as it had been. He was luckier the next time: He caught a middle piece, and how quickly that was gone!
By now, brave Varindwand (lit: break-into-the-wall) had grasped the head. He thought it did not please his brother, and how quickly he swallowed it up! And thus he could not live, for the fish bones (grät) thrust through his neck! Then spoke Galgenswanch (lit: swing-on-the-gallows): “Dear God, receive our thanks!” Thus Farindwand’s soul passed away to the land of Cockaigne (gen Schläuraffen land), that was well suited to him. His body was thrown into the river Necker. What harm was that to his companions? If you would eat your fill, guard against having too many fellow diners. But if you would fight successfully, you must have a good number of friends. Thus also thought Uotz vom Hag (lit. from the woods). He wanted to take an eater (fresser) out of the game and said: “Her Guggoch (lit. Sir Cuckoo) is a man who can himself make poems about Dietrich von Bern. We would much rather hear those than sit here eating those dead fish.”
Guggoch was flattered and began telling his tale: “Some heroes sat in a hall, and they ate prodigiously every time…” et cetera, to the end. But his audience were quick and ate up all the fish before the singer noticed. When his song was over, Guggoch wanted to start eating, looked around, and found nothing. He scratched his head and shouted out: “I am a child (i.e. a fool) and you, Uotz, a right knave! This trick shows it.” While he had sung joyfully earlier, now he mourned tearfully, but to all the others, it was a great joke.
This episode is so grotesque it stands out even in the context of a generally outrageous poem. Of course, people actually did die this way. I doubt it was at all common, but it was also not unheard of (and still isn’t – several people choke to death on food every year). The idea that fellow diners would casually dispose of the body and return to their feast, though, is as unimaginable to the medieval mind as it is to us. The point is to illustrate the greed of these peasants. An important marker of good manners was never to eat greedily. This is easier if you don’t need to worry where tomorrow’s dinner comes from, obviously, and also helped by the certainty that there is enough food for everyone on the table. Here, that is obviously not the case. This gets even worse in the next course as food supplies dwindle and the diners get progressively more confrontational.
The sense of shortage, incidentally, is very likely realistic. Fresh fish was a luxury item most people tasted rarely, if at all. There is every reason to think that most festive tables would have featured small portions, and since food was served in shared bowls, not ‘à la Russe’ in individual portions as is the custom today, sharing it out fairly depended on the restraint of all diners. This is a central concern of all surviving manners books. The way that people here fight over food, trick others into forgoing their share, or steal from each other is the very opposite of this tenet.
An interesting aside here is the final destination of the deceased diner’s soul: Schläuraffen land, the mythical land of Cockaigne. This is obvviously not intended as a serious theological point, but it shows that the idea of this place was already so firmly established it could serve as a throwaway punchline. The still proverbial Schlaraffenland is a kind of worldly paradise, a realm where food and drink are naturally plentiful and the best can be had without effort. In a way, it is the perfect afterlife for a glutton.
Heinrich Wittenwiler‘s massive poem ‚Der Ring‘ (the ring) is a somewhat puzzling piece of literature. Most likely produced in Constance around 1408-10, it tells a complex story of love, adventure, and deceit set in a peasant environment exploited for comedy value, but seems to have a genuine didactic purpose, though one often enough achieved by satirically describing the very opposite of desired conduct. In this, it resembles later Grobianic literature. I will limit myself to translating the parts that are relevant to food and table manners, but would advise anyone with enough command of German to read it in its entirety.

2023.03.21 20:43 SeizeThemMemes Visited by something, I think it's pretending.

Long story ahead.
It started when I was just a kid. I'm in my mid 30s now, but that's when it started. I'd like to preface most of this with an obligatory, to the best of my knowledge, I'm not making any of it up. Whatever definitive knowledge I think I've got is based on speculation and heresay. Nothing has identified itself at all, let alone directly. For my own sake, and the sake of related parties I'm going to edit all names from the story(ies). Especially since I'm not using a throwaway or anything. This is going right up on my personal account. I fabricate or hold back nothing this time. Ill be doing my best to cultivate as much accurate information as I can remember, but I'm getting old and don't remember as well as I used to. I can't even tell you how genuinely I consider religion, supernatural whatever, all of it to just be some stuff made up by white men to continue on with the patriarchy. I don't buy into ghosts or any of it.
It started as shadows. The feeling of being watched. My childhood wasn't that great, it was full of physical and emotional abuse from my mother. We lived in my step father's own childhood home, so it wasn't haunted by any ancient ghosts. It was a dark place though, with their history already blotting the air with it's thickness.
I guess before I really go on, I should explain that, too.
My step father was twenty something years older than my mom. So he was in his fifties during my teen years. He wasn't bad, he wasn't great. I guess technically speaking he was a bad step father. We didn't have much of a relationship, let alone a even bad "fatheson" one.
The home itself was an old New England starter home. It was small, as far as modern houses go. Three bedrooms total. One bath, a large basement spanned the entire length and width. By the time we had met him and moved in, he had already mostly paid the house off, buying it from his own parents. Outside of four years in the coast guard, He, his brother, and older sister had all lived there(while they moved away, he stayed)
Their family dynamic was dated, and weird. His mom and dad were the type to call each other "mom and dad" respectively. His sister, even after joining the navy and marrying an officer was required to maintain a joint bank account with her dad so he could have uptime decision making. She had her own creepy qualities when we'd visit. She collected Barbies, never opening them. That in itself isn't weird. Hell, I collect action figures myself. But she had a voice for some of her favorites, and they'd talk amongst themselves if she was in the room. My Step father's brother, was actually an inventor and invented something I can't remember anymore. He wasn't Bezos rich, but had a nice house in Florida when we'd visit. Mom and Step dad both always warned me though to be careful. He was on a lot of drugs.
My Step father himself was a weird man. He was never taught hygiene. And he was never really nurtured or loved, and unfortunately it showed. He didn't know how to do those things, either. He was a nice guy, but had no idea what to do from there. He grew up in the fifties, and as a kid, I just imagined that's why he was the way he was. From a different time.
The legacy of their combined tragic legacy lived on in a ghost that I do believe was in the realitively new house. We lived there total for twelve years with him, however the time is broken up into two different six year stints. Half way through, my mom for whatever reason, moved us out. We lived in a one room efficiency apartment together for exactly one year, before they reconciled and moved back in together. While we were moved out - we adopted a stray cat. Well, he adopted us. We actually found him the very first day we left him on our own. He was a white cat, nearly completely blind. He was just outside our motel door. We took him in with us. He was actually great. We named him Doofus, because he was kinda fun and goofy. He stayed with us the entire year departure, and was reluctantly allowed back with us.
My Step father was a dog person. Awkwardly so. He loved his dog(s). To the point where I'd still say he more made out with them, as a form of affection. It wasn't okay. I'm sure of that. Let me clear something up, while I say all of these negative things about him. It's not like that. While we don't have any sort of relationship now, I believe that's more us both healing from my mother more so than each other. But anyway, let's keep going!
Within a year after introducing the new cat into the house, he had himself quite the affinity for the basement. It was cool in the summer, and kept itself warm enough to be down there without freezing in the winter. It was my home base as a teenage boy in the late 90s, early 00s with AOL internet access. Doofus would often lounge around, and we'd leave him to his own devices while down there. He never disappeared and always came running when we'd shake his bowl of food. That first summer back though, we were, even my step father was, convinced he had worked his magic on a neighborhood feline friend, and had a litter of kittens down there. It wasn't the mousy cries of fresh babies. Certainly a meow that wasn't his though. We thought maybe he had found his way into the walls, or was simply stuck. Inevitably one day it happened with him fast asleep on his window perch in the kitchen. Finally my step dad fessed up what comes to be an important story.
When he was a kid, himself and his younger sister, found a cat. They, with some kind of sitcom understanding of how the world works, brought it home and tried to hide it in the basement to keep. Their father found it and brutalized the animal to punish them and simply disposed of it like it was nothing.
I can't stress it enough how… from that point on, things changed. The meowing from the basement stopped. Forever. It never happened again. However I never felt alone down there again, honestly.
I want to take another brief intermission to point out that at the current point in my life, I've been in therapy and anger management both. I haven't spoken to my mother in over seven years, and I'm barely any contact with my family at all. I had a very good therapist that helped me through my trauma with my mom as a child that continued into adulthood. Most of the information I'm going to share here, and continue to share here are things that modern medicine and science have since explained away. Sort of. I didn't just feel not alone while in the basement of my childhood home anymore, I felt actively pursued. Someone wasn't just always watching, they wanted to be known. I also started to experience night terrors that felt lucid.
I eventually moved out as soon as I could, and moved to Florida. Unfortunately my abusive mother followed. However, years passed from there. Through circumstance, I maintained a relationship with her. I was young and dumb, and didn't know how to set or enforce boundaries. Anyway.
Fast forward to my mid 20s. I had just ended a long term relationship with what was essentially my first "real-life" girlfriend. Things went sour the way things do when you're young, and I ended up moving back in with my mom and her now new husband. It was a very short stay, but while there I fell on hard times with my health. That's where the story here really takes an interesting turn.
Their house wasn't just bad, it was absolutely the worst. It was literally just a shack. The way some of those poor places in Florida are really like. I was home alone. I did have my own private bedroom. It was small, couldn't even hold my bed and the dresser. There was no door. It was an old curtain pinned to the outside wall. The illusion of privacy. It all went from easy enough to explain, to outright bonkers that day.
I was in bed. Doorway clearly visible. The sheet had been pinned to the space above it so it stood open for me to come and go easily. In the doorway was a teenage girl. Shoulder length brown hair. Conservatively dressed, yet modern. She didn't speak. It was over. She was gone.
The same girl came to me two or three days later, same setting. Just standing in the doorway. She seemed far less relaxed. Even agitated. She was holding something but I couldn't make out what. Whatever it was just wouldn't manifest, but it was important to her. Whatever that item was I can't help but feel like it'd all make sense now, but who knows. She stayed for nearly a full five minutes, fidgeting eithcthecitem before leaving. It was only a couple of more days before she came back again, but wasn't alone. An older man. Older then I was at the time, at least. He seemed like her father. They were bickering and fighting about something and she, in her tantrum disappeared. But he stayed and said nothing to me. He made no motion or charades. He did however glare at me this empty, menacing eyes and then vanished.
I didn't see the girl again until the night before I moved out. By this point, I had been drained of the small savings I did have. I was literally starving. Stealing food from Walmart just to keep myself going. I had aloowedcmy mother to drain me of everything. The apparition came to me that night, and the sensation was different. She glowed a warm orange tint. it felt like we were together forever. She still never spoke to me, but shared knowledge. She told me things about myself I didn't know yet. Actual, real life things that wouldn't come to fruition for over a decade, but they have indeed come true. Not even as a warning. It was a parlor trick to prove her abilities to me. I didn't see her again, for nearly 12 years.
It was last year she came back. I wasn't startled, she communicated like we were old friends. By just, giving me the information. I had probably six or eight months prior to that, reconnected with an old friend. The girl told me matter of fact my, "reach out. They aren't okay." Which was weird because we were talking mostly daily at that point again. I knew things weren't perfect but not being okay raised alarm bells. I reached out to find out their dog had passed just that morning. Again not a huge flex of their ability, just enough to keep me hooked.
I was bewildered at this point. I knew nothing of psychics or spirits or demons. Outside of what I seen on TV of course. I didn't even believe in that shit, but I love reading and learning.
Because of the history with my newly rekindled friendship, it was actually my childhood crush - the love of my life. That was actually the context of us becoming friends again. I wanted to work on fixing the things between us so we could be there again. The situation felt ripe by description for either Dr. Phil, or Lilith. Though I didn't know what that was even supposed to mean.
My own research and learning has brought me here, to you. This sub. This long story of ghost cats, and dark places, the meddling of what I thought was Lilith, but I believe to be something else entirely.
You see I've reached out to the girl who manifests. She hasn't been back, but I can still feel her around. So I've worked up the courage to confront her. I ask for identification, and my ears fill with this droning white noise and it'll eventually tell me that shes Lilith, but I'm not convinced. But from the difficulty in expression, neither are they. I believe it's something that latched onto my belief at first of it being Lilith and won't let up on that. I do believe it's "male" in nature. Has a knack for tricks, and knows that pretending to be something it isn't is bad for him, so he's trying to keep it under cover. I also don't think it's here to help me in any capacity. It clearly wants something either from me, personally, or is trying to use me as a vessel.
I think something masquerading now as Lilith has been involved in my life from the house I grew up. It didn't leave me alone, it learned to be less obvious and scary outright. But it's here. It's always here.

2023.03.21 20:25 Steelsoldier77 Week 1 Recap + Power Rankings

Hey all, I'm back this year with your weekly recap and preview posts. Between another kid, finishing grad school and getting promoted at work I'm a lot busier this year than I was last year, so there's a non-zero chance I have to abandon this project at some point, or at least scale it back a bit, but I'll keep it up as long as I can because I like doing it.
In addition, I was planning on doing a season preview series, but I was called up for a month of reserve duty in the army and was unable to get that done. It's also a difficult task because it would require keeping a tight watch on roster moves for the whole league because team rosters aren't finalized until right before the season. So this first edition of my power rankings will kind of serve as a short preview for each team.
But anyways, on to this week's games. As usual, I would love to get other people's opinions about the games and players.
Arizona Rattlers (1-0) @ Quad City Steamwheelers (0-1) 60-53
The opening game of the season didn't disappoint as we saw the perennial powerhouse Rattlers take on last year's championship runners up Steamwheelers in a game that came down to the wire. Both teams traded scores for most of the game until late in the fourth when QC turned it over on downs and Arizona was able to capitalize and go up by two scores, effectively sealing it with a minute left. Both quarterbacks were electric, each throwing for 4 touchdowns and running for another 2 on the ground. Also of note- this was Jarrod Harrington's first game with QC, playing against his former team, catching a td and rushing for another.
Player of the Game: Drew Powell, QB, Arizona

Frisco Fighters (1-0) @ Green Bay Blizzard (0-1) 76-30
This game was actually pretty close for the first quarter, until Frisco scored 39 unanswered points and effectively sealed the game before half, by picking off Green Bay quarterback Jarome Johnson twice in the final minute of the half. Frisco looks like they haven't missed a beat since last year, with TJ Edwards as efficient as ever, not turning over the ball and rushing for 6 touchdowns on the ground. They didn't appear to be missing my favorite running back, Justin Rankin, who left for Bay Area in the off season. Jerminic Smith returned as their number 1 receiver, and defense was able to grab 4 interceptions, returning one for a touchdown. As for Green Bay, their defense looked nothing like the force they were last year. Losing numerous start defensive players, including rookie standout linebacker James Brown probably didn't help. As for offense, last year's starting QB Jack Sheehan left for the NAL, leaving GB scrambling to find a replacement. They started the game off with rookie Jarome Johnson, who is built like Marquise Brown. He had some decent designed QB runs, but was wildly inaccurate throwing the ball, and was eventually benched in favor of fellow rookie Max Meylor, who was also terrible. The only player who really looked like he was even trying was WR Steve Newbold.
Player of the Game: TJ Edwards, QB, Frisco

Power Rankings
  1. Arizona Rattlers (1-0): The Rattlers appear to be set to continue dominating the West. They didn't lose any key players apart from Kyree Woods, but they are stacked at defensive back anyways. They added start defensive lineman Ulric Jones from the 2022 champion NAZ Wranglers. And most importantly, they've still got two-time reigning IFL MVP Drew Powell leading them.
  2. Frisco Fighters (1-0): Frisco's offense is electric, with so many weapons at their disposal, the most important of which is quarterback TJ Edwards. Last year he and Blake Sims spit snaps fairly evenly throughout the first half of the season, but Edwards proved to be more careful with the ball and is a bit more agile. Honestly, he has a fair chance to win MVP this year is he can repeat last year's performance over an entire season. He specializes in throwing on the run, but also has games where he'll score 5-6 touchdowns on the ground.
  3. Bay Area Panthers (0-0): Anyone who followed the league last year might do a double take when seeing BA at the 3 spot, but anyone who followed the transaction reports this off season shouldn't be surprised. Their biggest move was probably bringing on Dixie Wooten, a former championship winning head coach, as their offensive coordinator. They then signed and traded for players such as LB Darin Hungerford, RB Justin Rankin, QB Dalton Sneed, WR Carlos Thompson, and more. Look for them to be this year's worst to first team, a la 2022's NAZ Wranglers.
  4. Quad City Steamwheelers (0-1): Quad City got off to a slow start last year, but was reenergized by the return of EJ Hilliard and were able to make a run for the championship game. This year, they bring back a strong offensive line, and most importantly EJ Hilliard for the entire season. Their core offensive weapons remain the same. Their big question mark this year is the defense, which was slightly below average last year.
  5. Massachusetts Pirates (0-0): The Pirates' strengths remain the same when compared to last season. Quarterback Alejandro Bennifield is super dependable, but last year missed time due to injury. They have a very deep receiving corps, including one of my favorite players Thomas Owens. They also built upon what was already one of the top defensive backfields by adding former Green Bay cornerback Momodou Mbye, who was one of the top at his position last year. The biggest change for Massachusetts this year is their head coach Rayshaun Kizer leaving to coach the Omaha BEEF of the CIF, but he is replaced by the Pirates' offensive coordinator, Mark Stoute, who has a ton of experience as head coach in the indoor game across numerous leagues.
  6. Sioux Falls Storm (0-0): Ok ok, I know some of you will call me a homer on this one but hear me out. Sioux Falls has brought back Storm legend and hometown hero Lorenzo Brown, who led the Storm to a championship in 2019. Brown played sparingly in 2021 and not at all in 2022, but if he can return to 2019 form he will elevate a Sioux Falls team that, while losing some key offensive playmakers (Carlos Thompson, Aaron Dilworth, Nate Chavious) gave its defense some much needed additions in All-IFL linebacker James Brown, defensive lineman Kyree Campbell and retaining 2022 IFL sack leader Undraez Lilly.
  7. Duke City Gladiators (0-0): 2021's passing leader Nate Davis got injured in the Gladiators first game last year, but that hardly had any impact on one of the most electric offenses in the league. They have what is probably the best WR tandem in the league in IFL legend Dello Davis and freak athlete Jared Elmore, in addition to Gregory Dent who scored touchdowns last year in all phases of the game. Now, Nate Davis is back and should lead this team to new heights.
  8. Vegas Knight Hawks (0-0): Vegas was wildly inconsistent last year, cycling through quarterbacks like marshmallows. But this year Daquan Neal has made the move from Tucson to Vegas and should give them a huge boost. Neal is a former MVP and championship winning QB from his time in Iowa, who also had a tryout with the Colts last year and was signed for a short period of time to the USFL. However, we saw Neal's play decline a bit in the latter half of the season, so it remains to be seen if he can return to form. He's got some good weapons, and I am personally pretty fond of WR KD Cannon. The Knight Hawks also have Kony Ealy on defense, who some may remember from his time with the Carolina Panthers.
  9. Iowa Barnstormers (0-0): The Barnstormers roster remains largely unchanged from last year, for better or worse. Quarterback DJ Peterson had some really great moments last year, but also some duds. It seems like when he gets just a bit of pressure on him he collapses and forgets how to pass. Maybe he will be a bit cooler in the pocket with a year of experience behind him. The Barnstormers were able to take advantage of a mediocre Eastern Conference last year and snuck into the playoffs, but I can't really see that happening again.
  10. Tucson Sugar Skulls (0-0): Tuscon is kind of an unknown at the moment. They lost head coach Dixie Wooten and star QB Daquan Neal, but have brought in 2022 offensive rookie of the year Ramone Atkins from Duke City, but questions remain if the new head coach can fix Tucson's god-awful defense from last year.
  11. Northern Arizona Wranglers (0-0): NAZ were the worst team in the league in 2021, going 1-13, but turned it around in 2022, adding a ton of talent and winning the IFL championship on the back of a fierce defense and solid offense led by Kaleb Barker. Now, he's no longer on the team, and the Wranglers have hemorrhaged key defensive players as well, such as linemen Ulric Jones, defensive player of the year Jaquan Artis, Darin Hungerford and more. The main positive they have going for them is head coach Les Moss, who should be able to keep this team from being the worst in the league.
  12. San Diego Strike Force (0-0): Are the Strike Force even still a team? Do they exist? You wouldn't know it from their website, which is still promoting highlights of their last win from the 2022 season. It's hard to tell what's going on with this team, but with no real splash signings, it's hard to imagine they've made a big improvement over last year's team.
  13. Tulsa Oilers (0-0): Tulsa is an expansion team, so we don't have any baseline to go off of. The one thing I can say is that their QB situation is not great, and they will need to decide between Giovanni Sanders, who sucked it up for a couple games for Bismarck last year, and Bobby Froehlich, who was pretty unspectacular for the Rapid City Marshalls in the CIF last year.
  14. Green Bay Blizzard (0-1): So Green Bay has the unfortunate disadvantage of having already played before writing my week 1 power rankings. I won't go too much into it at the risk of repeating my game recap, but any redeeming features they may have had last year (defense, mostly) were nonexistent this past game, and their QB situation is a nightmare. Good luck.

2023.03.21 20:21 Negative_Detail5210 Blurred Vision/Ringing in Ears/Dizzy/Nauseas after eating high carb dinner

Hello! I’m hoping to get some feedback/insight on what might have triggered what I experienced last night:
Yesterday was a busy work day, and I didn’t have any “regular” meals. However I snacked on Kind bars, yogurt, peanut & almond butter, and drank green tea and carbonated water throughout the day. Then, we ordered Indian for dinner and I ate two bowls of mostly white rice & some lamb - which is a lot for me. I was stuffed.
I nodded off on the couch after eating for just a few minutes, and when I got up to get ready for bed my vision became blurry/pixelated, I felt dizzy and nauseas, and I couldn’t hear normally - there was a ringing in my ears and my ears felt like they needed to pop. It was really scary.
All those things went away once I laid down, but came right back every time I tried to get back up for the following half hour. From googling it, they fit the symptoms of low blood pressure?
I’m 38, F, 5”4, and 115 lbs w/ a good BMI. I do several (short) workouts a week.
Supplements: I’d ordered Quercetin for extra immune support and took one capsule (250 mg) for the first time shortly before dinner last night.
Meds: I take Adderall, Gabapentin, and Zoloft, but I’ve been on all three for years and never experienced anything like this.
Thank you!!

2023.03.21 20:16 MikeLowrey305 Sawyer mini 2 pack on sale at Walmart.

Sawyer mini 2 pack on sale at Walmart.
This 2 pack red & blue (sp8101) is on sale for $24.99 at Walmart. The newer mini 2 pack green & blue (sp2101) is $39.99 on Amazon & the single mini is $21.99 at Walmart. Is there anything different between the 2 and is buying an older version still gonna work as good as a new one? On a side note they also had a set of Ozark trail carbon fiber trekking poles for $13.99 with rubber & mud tips, they're collapsible to about 26" I think but not foldable like some others. Any input would help, thanks.

2023.03.21 20:13 TheCJK Endless Summer

Purrk stretched his legs out in the water, flexing his webbed toes as he paddled around on his back. His small ears flicked as a gnat buzzed around his face. He swatted at it lightly with his left hand, missing. His hand fell on his tummy and he scratched through his sun warmed fur.
He paddled around, falling in and out of naps, for several hours. He neared the shore and pulled up several green pads to gnaw on. A smile crossed his face as he chewed. His tummy bulged momentarily and he expelled pellets into the dark water, easing further into comfort as his internals were sated.
He eventually reached the bank he had entered from, and exited back out toward the large black sunning stone. He climbed up it and curled into the massive etched symbol in its surface, embracing the warmth. He fell back asleep as his fur began to dry out.
Purrk's ears perked up as he heard familiar footsteps exit out of the field.
"Son." A low voice called out.
Purrk rolled over and opened an eye. "Hey dad. What you doing out here?"
His dad walked over and sat down beside him in the carved glyph. He leaned into his son, snuggling a bit and forcing him to move a few inches. "Came to see how you are doing."
"Same as always."
His dad let his eyes shut a bit as he crossed his arms on his own tummy. "You drinking out of the pond again?"
Purrk shook his head slightly. "No."
His dad reached over and patted his son's leg. "It's ok. I'll have your mom pick up more antiparasitics."
"I'll be fine." Purrk groaned a bit. "It's natural."
His dad lifted his head up. "Early death is natural too. You're too old for this kind of nonsense."
Purrk rolled over, adjusting to look his dad square on. "I'm just living."
"No, son, you're not." His dad leaned back onto the stone, resting his head on his hands. "It's time for you to move on, get out on your own."
Purrk smiled. "Ok." He leaned up onto his knees. "So, we gonna build a house? Do I get to pick where?"
His dad sighed. "Your mom's pregnant."
Purrk laughed. "Ok."
"It's going to be a big litter. Eight this time."
Purrk's eyes widened slightly. "Oh wow. Doctor scanned her?"
"Yup." His dad turned and looked at him. "We're going to need your room Purrk. Your older siblings have claims to the farm already." He leaned over and touched his shoulder. "You're going to have to strike out on your own."
Purrk stared at him for a moment. "Like leave? You want me off the acreage?"
He nodded. "Yeah. Our family is at quota."
Purrk nodded back and lowered his head. "This is my home." He looked back up at his dad, a tear in the black of his eye. "You, my family. This is my home."
"Purrk, anyone else and I would worry, but not you. You'll do fine. The universe is big. You'll find a place to make your own."
Purrk rose up onto his two feet. "The universe? Dad, I don't know anything about out there. Why can't I just live here by the pond. I like it here."
"Son, you're Baraman. Probably the most Bara of anyone I know. I've never seen you afraid of anything in your life. You'll be fine."
Purrk shook his head, raising a finger. "I've only tried to be like you. You're never phased. You make everything work. Let me stay and help. I can help."
His dad leaned up onto his own knees and took a slow breath. "Son, you don't help. You don't run the tractors. You don't cook, you don't clean, you don't fix, you don't do, well, anything." He stood up and stretched for a moment, then looked at Purrk. "You take up space, and we need that space." He turned around and started walking up the face of the black stone.
Purrk watched as he walked up into the bean field. He groaned and turned back to the water and slipped back in, flipping over to float on his back.
---===*===---
He packed up his room easily. He didn't have much in the way of possessions, just a few shirts, a blanket for cold nights, and a small blade he used to cut foliage. He finished sorting them and exited into the communal room. Rika and Tuk had come from their homes to see him off.
Rika smiled, handing him a pouch full of dried melick fruit. "You're going to be amazing out there." She said, leaning in and nuzzling him.
Tuk stood next to the door, holding it open. "Come on Purrk. Taxi is waiting for you."
Purrk stared at him for a moment. "Where exactly are you sending me?"
Tuk stepped out, waiting for him. "Dad and I talked over best scenarios for you. We think Harborhold is best."
Purrk walked toward the green motorized carriage and sighed. "What will I do there?"
Tuk waved at the driver and pulled the door open for his brother. "There's job's a plenty there. Find work, get you a place." Tuk opened up his shirt pocket and pulled out a cloth bound wad of coins. "Here. Get you an apartment there. Get set up."
Purrk took the pouch and looked up at his brother. "Can I come visit?"
Tuk put his right hand on Purrk's shoulder, staring into his brother's dark eyes. "Make it two years, then you can visit. Maybe during harvest. We could use the help."
Purrk looked down. "Maybe come for harvest. Alright." He turned and slunk into the taxi. He looked up at the high window of the family roundhouse, his mother stared down at him. After a moment she turned away.
Tuk slammed the door and patted the trunk.
The driver set off for Harborhold.
---===*===---
The ride took most of the day, the thin gravel roads giving way to cobbled then paved roads. Traffic increased as more and more trucks hauling grains and dried fruits filled the road. Purrk stared out the window as buildings became more prevalent, houses and farms replaced by towers and apartments. In the distance he could see trade ships descending toward the landing grounds. He watched as ship after ship hovered in wait, and then lowered down amongst the tradehouses.
Purrk pointed out the window. "Can you take me there?"
Blonk, the driver, snorted. "Course. You sure you want over there though? Your kin said to take you to the harvest halls."
Purrk shook his head, still staring at the ships. A large metallic purple ship had entered the atmosphere and lowered into line. "No. I never liked harvest. That though. That's amazing."
Blonk groaned. "Alright. No hair off me. I got paid here and back. Yours for the day bud."
Purrk had never imagined so many Baraman. He had heard stories from his sisters, clothes, peoples, other races, but he didn't really care, not until seeing it. People darted in and out of stores, several were wearing lower clothes, pants, and one fella was even wearing feet covering.
He pointed laughing. "Look that guy! He's got shoes!"
Blonk nodded. "It ain't mud here bud. The sweepers try and keep the sidewalks clear, but its not uncommon to get cut on broken glass."
"Gross! Bara leave glass on the ground here?"
"Yup. Bunch of animals we are." Blonk responded as he turned the corner toward a warehouse. "You're wanting a job eh?"
Purrk looked at the towering silos and then looked at the driver. "Yeah, I'll need one."
Blonk pointed up at the silo. "I got a cousin runs this place. They always need hands. You want a job, I can get you one right now, ya want."
Purrk nodded.
Blonk slowed the car to a stop and turned off the engine. "Come on bud. Let's get you set up."
---===*===---
Blonk led the way into the high offices at the end of the silos. A manager saw him and descended the wooden stairs.
"Hey cuz." The tall Bara said as he took Blonk's arm and embraced him.
Blonk smiled and hugged back. After a moment he pointed over at Purrk. "Kicked off the farm. Needs a job." He leaned in a bit. "Not to bright."
The taller Bara walked over and looked Purrk over. "Kicked off the farm huh?"
Purrk nodded. "Yeah. Need a job and find a place to nest up."
He looked Purrk over. "You able to operate forks?"
Purrk scratched his chin then shook his head. "Forks?"
The manager pointed across the floor at a wheeled machine lifting a pallet of grain sacks. "Forks. For lifting. Think you can manage one of those?"
Purrk watched the operator for a moment. "I can learn." He said, nodding. "Yeah, that looks fun. I can learn that."
The manager laughed. "Fun. Yeah." He stuck his hand out. "Frelb. Clan owner of this here silo."
Purrk reached out and took his hand. "Purrk. Um, I got a backpack."
Frelb laughed and looked at Blonk. "Straight off the farm eh."
Blonk nodded.
Frelb started back up the stairs. "You start training tomorrow Purrk. Go get some rest." He waved him off and then turned to look back at Blonk. "Cuz, you going to be in town for a bit?"
Blonk shook his head. "Getting this one set up over at Matta's. She should have some bunks available til he finds what he wants, then I gotta head back out."
"You gonna have time for drinks before you head out?"
Blonk nodded and laughed. "You buying right?"
Frelb raised his webbed hands out. "Buying? Hell, no, brewing maybe."
Blonk laughed and hit Purrk in the shoulder. "Let's go get your bunk bud." He then pointed back up at his cousin. "Then we're gonna teach you how to do a run."
Purrk tilted his head. "A run?"
---===*===---
Purrk woke up hurting the next morning. He looked around and memory started flicking back to him. He was in the bunkhouse, Matta's bunkhouse. He took a deep breath, feeling his stomach turn over. He hurried up and made it to the bathroom at the end of the hall. Someone yelled at him for making too much noise. He didn't care, and proceeded to empty his stomach in the toilet.
He looked at the mess. "I hate toilets." He flushed his stomach contents and sat on the ground next to the toilet, breathing slowly.
Someone tapped at the door. "That you Purrk?"
He nodded even though no one could see him. "Yeah. Matta?"
She laughed. "Yes sir. Sounds like you got too much of a shine with my cousins." She tapped the door. "You best hurry. Your going to be late for Frelb, and he doesn't like late."
He got up and went to the sink, turning the ridged handle. Water rushed out and he took it, splashing his face, tasting it. "Eww!" He spat out the metal laden water. "God this place is gross."
He finished washing and went back to his sleeping rack. He pulled a shirt out of his sack and put it on. He sighed as he looked out the large windows, taking in the bright light and brick buildings staring back. "First day of work. This is going to suck."
---===*===---
Purrk was still slightly dizzy when he was presented the forks to drive. He hopped up, mirroring what his trainer had shown him. He immediately swung the front end abruptly right, not intending to. "My bad."
The trainer groaned, watching.
Purrk manipulated the fork again, getting it to move forward and then backward as he wanted. "I'm getting it. I'm getting it."
The trainer pointed at a flat of pallets. "Alright. Lets see you move some."
Purrk drove over and picked a pallet, balancing it precariously on the end of the forks.
"Restick it."
Purrk lowered it and pushed in deeper under the pallet, then lifted.
The trainer stared at him then pointed over at a waiting truck. "See if you can get it on there without breaking stuff."
Purrk nodded and carted the pallet over. He sat it down gently on the truck and backed away, leaving his cargo safely in place. He looked over at his trainer and smiled. "I did it!"
The trainer sighed and pointed back at the piles of sacks. "Good. Now do it a hundred more times."
Purrk groaned and drove back over.
---===*===---
The days went by quick. Frelb ignored Purrk during the days in the silo, but had him stay after to help with runs in the evening. After a week Purrk was able to run the still without intervention and Frelb sat back watching.
The taller Bara took a sip from his cup, shaking as the drink went down. He relaxed after and pointed at Purrk. "Hows you settling in?"
"Ok I guess." Purrk replied.
"Ok?" Frelb asked. "You moved into your own apartment this week didn't you?"
Purrk nodded as he leaned next to the cooler coil, keeping an eye on the drip. "Yeah. It's ok."
"Again the ok." Frelb laughed. "You're living in the big city! You been downtown yet? Seen any shows?"
"No. Doesn't sound fun."
Frelb shook his head, leaning forward. "What's got you down? Home sick?"
Purrk looked over at the foreman. "I don't get it."
"Get what?"
"The point." He replied.
Frelb stared at him for a moment. "The shows are fun. I can take you, my treat. You ever seen a good titty dance?"
Purrk sighed. "I've got lots of sisters, seen way too many titties."
"I know a good doctor. He's got meds for depression. Might cure you up."
Purrk reached under the drip and took a taste on his finger, raising it up to his tongue. He tasted it, confirming the ethanol. "It ain't depression, or needing a show. I just don't get it." He stared over at Frelb. "I thank you for the work, and your family helping me, I really do, but I don't like working."
Frelb laughed. "Nobody likes working Purrk. That's why we we're running the still! Hell, your cut from this week's runs will set you up a pretty payday. Use it, enjoy it, find anything you like. Hell take your pay in jugs if you want. You gotta get out of your funk, too young for that nonsense."
Purrk shrugged. "Maybe."
"Maybe my broke tooth." Frelb said, standing up. "We'll get you set up with something. Maybe a hobby or find you a nice young sow down at the bars. Something."
Purrk groaned.
---===*===---
Payday came and Purrk opened up a bank account, bought a new blue and yellow shirt, and went down to the bar as Frelb had suggested. It was one run by one of their family members, fueled by the very spirits Purrk had distilled. He sat at the end of the long wood plank, watching the door. He sat, sipping on his fruit mixed drink. The evening went on, people entered and left, and still he sat, quiet at the end of the plank.
Two Diles stepped in near midnight. He had never seen their kind before, only tales. He watched as they ordered milks and sat in the corner. The two sat talking in their guttural language, discussing a paper held in the shorter one's stubby clawed hands. The other looked over at Purrk, returning his stare.
Purrk, clueless, didn't look away. After a moment he smiled and raised his own glass toward them.
The shorter stowed his paper away in his side pouch and got up. It walked over toward Purrk, its toothed grin motionless. It stopped and leaned onto the plank bar, directing its yellow eye directly into Purrk's dark eyes. "You got a problem little Bara?"
Purrk, still smiling, shook his head. "No. Drink's good. You doing ok?"
The Dile looked over at its comrade and shrugged before turning back toward Purrk. "I'm doing good. Well, actually I'm not." He leaned in closer. "I've got a job to do, and I don't really know how to do it."
Purrk looked at him for a moment then tilted his head to match the Dile's. "I've got a job too, not really that fun, but it pays. Took me a while to learn to do it too." He laughed and patted the creature on the shoulder. "You'll figure it out. If I can learn, I'm sure you can."
The Dile laughed as his friend stepped up and took a seat beside Purrk. The taller one leaned over Purrk's other side. "You ever been on a starship?" It asked.
Purrk shook his head. "No, I watch them from the roof sometimes. They look pretty."
"Well." The shorter Dile started. "Captain wants us to fill out the crew roster. Wants to hire some Baraman, people like you."
Purrk leaned back, chuckling a bit. "I'm a Baraman!"
The taller Dile leaned in. "We know bud! How'd you like to work a starship?"
Purrk shook his head wildly, still laughing. "I don't know anything about starships. I just drive forks and distill." He said, lifting his glass."
"It's easy." The taller Dile said. "If you can run forks, you can help in the cargo bay I'm sure. See the universe, go to new places, see new things. What you say?"
Purrk thought for a moment. "The warehouse is pretty boring. I don't like it here." He looked over at the shorter Dile. "It pays right?"
The Dile nodded. "Of course. Pays better than any warehouse job on this silly slimewater world."
Purrk stuck out his hand. "Where do I sign up?"
The shorter Dile pulled out the paper. "Right here my new friend. Right here."
Purrk leaned in and took the offered pen, signing the roster sheet.
The Dile looked at the signature, smiling. "Well, Purrk. We are set to lift off tomorrow evening. I'll get you cleared to board. Be there, or be left here. Your choice."
Purrk laughed and patted him on the back. "Be where?"
The taller Dile stood up, towering over him. "Pad fourteen. Black ship. You'll see us running grounds. We'll keep a look for you."
Purrk kept nodding. "Alright. Deal. See you two tomorrow!"

2023.03.21 19:57 alexvetivert Wild Veil Favorites

I’ve been wanting to make a post about my Wild Veil favorites for a while and finally decided to do it while procrastinating studying for a bio test. Although expensive (my wallet cries softly in the background), this house often has 20%-40% off sales so I recommend keeping an eye out if you want to try their catalogue. The quality of the ingredients feel very raw and luxurious to me. IMO Wild Veil excels at musks, ambers, and oceanics. I personally feel like her patchouli and rice notes are exceptional. Overall, they have some truly unique scents. There are some real expressions of art. Because these are natural perfumes, they mostly sit close to the skin and don’t wear as long as synthetics. I do feel like the solid formulations tend to have more staying power.
Ok let’s get into it….

Caterpillar- This is my absolute favorite cardamom perfume. The cardamom and pink peppercorn spiciness blends beautifully with the creaminess of the ylang ylang, vanilla and tonka. Smooth, slightly fruity, unsmoked tobacco acts as a bridge to a briney green olive note (think fatty, buttery castelvatrano olives). This perfume is a sophisticated, spicy + sweet and savory gourmand. The olive note is divine. I often wear this one to sleep but it really works for any occasion imo
Fireflies- Fireflies was an unexpected love for me. I’m fairly picky with florals usually, but this one is nicely balanced with an array of earthy notes and citrus. This one comes across fresh, sensual, and woody. I am a cedarwood loving freaq and the cedar in this is magnificent and substantial. The indolic orange blossom adds a lightly sweet, citrus quality to the blend that marries nicely with the camphorous notes of cedar and patchouli. I also sense a glowing light amber throughout. Fireflies reminds me of a carefree summer staying in a rundown but charming farmhouse on Lake Superior in a tiny town in WI with a past love. Lazing on a blanket amongst the lush greenery in between taking dips in the lake.
Magician (solid)- As a lover of tarot, this one called to me. It contained a lot of notes that I enjoy, and it did not disappoint. Magician is a rich, boozy amber at heart. I sense the patchouli, the creaminess of the sandalwood, and the non-gourmand almost dry vanilla that blends with hay. The oak and cedarwood add a lovely woody element to the composition. I can pick out the bitter, lightly sweet poplar bud as well. Ginger, and balsam spice up the warm mulled amber. Magician is whiskey fueled party in a barn under the harvest moon.
Mosaic- Another unique foody one with some unexpected notes. The realistic rice note is a strong aspect of this perfume along with the delicate oolong, the umami shitake mushroom note, and a wafting plume of nag champa incense. There is a playful push and pull between salty and sweet in this perfume. I feel like I also get a light hint of a floral at play in the notes that could be contributed to the nag champa, jasmine rice or the oolong. Definitely genderless in a way that I really enjoy. I think this would be a perfect pick to wear to an art show.
Splitting- Musky, spicy, dry, and very resinous. Wild Veil exceeds at musks and this is my favorite of the ones I’ve tried from them. I feel it is criminally underrated. The copal and frankincense are the stars for me. They create a lightly sweet, balsamic sharpness that is meditative and otherworldly. A realistic nutty rice note can be detected over a backdrop of a rich, spicy black musk (enhanced by pepper). I can’t detect the puerh in this specifically but there is an overall earthiness that could be contributed to that. The black musk turns slightly powdery after some wear in a way that I enjoy (as someone who is weary of powder notes). Splitting is ethereal yet earthy. I feel like it carries a reverent magic.
Annabel Sea (solid)- Another briney offering from Wild Veil. This one starts out slightly astringent with a blood orange top note. There is a funk that can be attributed to the seaweed and ambergris notes that begins to blend with an amber-vanillic base. I sense a dry oud and the nuttiness of the roasted seashells (reminiscent of the seashell note in Lvnea’s Black Sea). This finally settles into a warm oceanic amber with patchouli coming through more prominently. This one morphs a lot on my skin and I really enjoy the journey.
Here to chat about your Wild Veil experiences or answer any questions.

2023.03.21 19:39 Gaming_N_Whiskey Bardstown Trip Recap

We regularly see posts in bourbon asking for Bourbon Trail trip recommendations. My wife and I just returned from a trip to Bardstown, and I wanted to offer you guys some feedback on our experiences. Hopefully you will find them useful for planning your own trip to Bardstown.
First, a very special "thank you" to u/Old_Riff_502 . Old Riff always posts very useful information in the forums. I also privately messaged him and I was amazed with the amount advice that he provided on the area. I don't think we would have had nearly as a excellent of a trip had it not been for him. Thank you again!
Hotel: We stayed at the La Quinta Inn & Suites from Wednesday evening until Sunday morning. The hotel was new, clean, and offered free breakfast every day (although we never actually ate it). The hotel is easy to get in and out of. It seemed like we were only a five minute drive away from anywhere we were trying to go. However, it's not very centrally located. You're not walking anywhere important from the hotel. The other knock on the hotel (and this seems more just industry standard these days), is that we never had anyone come in to do a room refresh at all during our trip. Nobody took out the trash, refreshed room coffee, or soaps/shampoos. That being said, I would not mind staying here again at all!
Distilleries (listed in order or preference):
  • Kentucky Cooperage - I know it's cheating....this isn't technically a distillery. But hear me out. Kentucky Cooperage is located in Lebanon, KY which is maybe a 30-minute drive from Bardstown. It may have been my favorite experience of the whole trip! The visitor's center is very unassuming; it looks like a small store in a strip mall. But the magic happens when you are shuttled across the street to walk the factory. Watching these craftsmen create bourbon barrels was impressive! The skill and meticulous attention required for each barrel was very cool to witness. I think this was one of the cheaper tours as well at ~$15.
  • Jim Beam - Beam Made Bourbon - The James B. Beam distillery is located in Clermont, KY, which was a 25-minute drive from Bardstown. Although it does feel sterile and corporate feeling at times, I had an excellent time! The tour runs like a well oiled machine! Our tour guide Terry was knowledgeable of the distillery and the area. The sheer scope of the Jim Beam operation is mind boggling! Many generic distillery tours start to get repetitive. But I thought the Jim Beam tour was one of the best. The site and setting are really cool. There is also a spot where you can select a bottle of Knob Creek 9-year single barrel and watch it get filled through the bottling process. You can then take home your bottle for $60. The tasting was probably my favorite of the trip. We were given Jim Beam White Label, Basil Hayden 10-year, Knob Creek 9-year, and then a bourbon of your choice - Bakers 7, Legent, or Knob Creek 18-year. The store had some interesting bottles. There was a distillery exclusive experimental batch of something which looked to be about 250 mL and was $70. When they opened that had a bottle of Little Book and a bottle of Booker's for sale. I missed them both. There were plenty of bottles of Knob Creek 18-year which were selling for $180, and there was a Jim Beam Lineage which looked fancy but was selling for ~$280. I spoke to our tour guide after the tour for a bit. After the tour you walk back down through the gift shop and I noticed them putting another bottle of Booker's on the shelf. I was able to purchase this for $100. So it seems like they do restock some items throughout the day. There is also an excellent restaurant on site called the Kitchen Table (more on this later).
  • Bardstown Bourbon - Rickhouse Tasting - This was a very unique experience. Bardstown Bourbon is a very modern facility, and the experience feels different from many from the long established brands. This tour was done in a very cold rickhouse (apparently they are always cold). Our tour guide gave us an overview of Bardstown Bourbon as a brand and some of the things they are working on. We then proceeded to get samples poured directly from the barrel via a whiskey thief. We tried a wheated bourbon which he said is part of their Origin series, a regular bourbon (which was not released yet), and a 95/5 rye. We then proceeded to go to a speakeasy type tasting room to for our last sample of Fusion #8. This was followed up by a walk back to the gift shop where we were told we would get to keep our sample glasses. The restaurant's food looked wonderful but we didn't eat. There were also a TON of pours available at their bar. I was interested in purchasing the Origin bourbon, but he said that they were sold out. I later found one a Total Wine. They did have quite a few bottles for sale though - many of Bardstown collaborative releases, Bardstown only releases, as well as bottles that use Bardstown to make their bourbon.
  • Maker's Mark - We did the standard Maker's Mark tour. The grounds were great! Very hilly and picturesque. Unfortunately, we were visiting in the winter, so it was not very colorful. But I could see this being amazing in the spring or fall! The history explored was very interesting. The tasting was wonderful, as I always enjoy Maker's Mark. We tasted regular Maker's, Maker's Cask Strength, Maker's 46, Maker's 46 Cask Strength, and a French Toast stave select. We purchased a bottle in the gift shop and we were able to hand dip it which was pretty cool. I was hoping to have lunch here, but their restaurant was being redone. They had a tasting bar opened which offered a limited selection of Maker's pours and cocktails. I really enjoyed the Makers 46 cask strength, and was hoping to buy a bottle. But that was unavailable. They had standard Maker's bottles for sale, Maker's 46, standard Maker's cask strength, and a Blueberry stave select bottle for purchase. We chose a standard Maker's with a limited edition label where some of the proceeds support women's education.
  • Wilderness Trail - This is a bit of a hike from Bardstown - probably about 45-minutes. But I thought it was well worth the trip! Wilderness Trail is a very modern facility. They really put an emphasis on the science behind the bourbon. I thought it was very cool to learn about the variety of yeasts utilized by Wilderness Trial. This was a pretty generic distillery tour. The tasting is done in the gift shop, which got a little loud at the end due to another tour coming in. We tried a wheated, a higher rye, a cask strength, and their rye. To me, much of Wilderness Trail's rye comes off as minty, and that is a turnoff for me. But their high-rye standard bourbon was a favorite of mine! We spoke to the tour guide after the tour, and he said "I've got something for you to try". We tried a three barrel blend of master distillery selected bottles - one wheated and one high-rye. I liked the high-rye and purchased a bottle for about $65. They also had a limited release for a program they are doing with the Frasier museum which was available for purchase. It was a 6-year rye (it might have been 7-years, I forget at this point) for $135. Not being a fan of the rye, I passed on this.
  • Heaven Hill - You Do Bourbon - This was a pretty cool experience! Heaven Hill's distillery was CROWDED with people. It seems to be a very popular stop on the Bourbon Trail. The You Do Bourbon experience was pretty pricey at $40 per person. But it was also really cool! We would each have the opportunity to purchase a bottle of our choice at the end of he tasting. 20 of us were taken back to a classroom setting, and we got right to tasting. We each had four samples in front of us - Bernheim 7-year Barrel Proof, Larceny Barrel Proof, Elijah Craig Barrel Proof, and then Heaven Hill Select Stock 14-year. I don't know much about the Select Stock. They did say it was 14-years aged in a high floor of the rickhouse and it was wheated. The tour guide gave us the hard FOMO sale on the Select Stock - it's only 25 barrels, it's exclusive to the distillery, once it's gone....it's gone. It also had a price tag of $200! I was disappointed that we had so much wheated whiskey or low rye options on the tasting. But the Elijah Craig was wonderful! I purchased a bottle of it for about $80. I bottled it up using an idiot proof machine, corked it, and my wife drew up the labels. It was a very cool experience! There was a bachelor party full of what my wife and I affectionately refer to as "Bourbon Bros" who bought into the FOMO. They purchased probably 12-15 bottles of the Select Stock on their own! Kentucky must love these tour groups!
  • Four Roses Bottling Facility - This is kind of near the Jim Beam distillery, and I think it's worth popping your head in and checking out. We did this, and their gift shop had a Master Distiller selected private barrel of OESQ for $105. I've yet to try it, but I am very excited to!
  • Limestone Branch - We stopped in here for a quick flight. The flight they gave was very generous: Minor Case Sherry Finished Rye, Yellowstone 4-year, Yellowstone Toasted, Yellowstone Single-Malt, Yellowstone Hand-picked, and their gin. This is one of the things I like best about Kentucky, you can try before you buy! Had I not been given this option, I would have purchased the Toasted and Single-Malt. I would have been disappointed with both of these purchases. Ultimately, none of these selections were for me. But it was a cool experience nonetheless.
Restaurants/Food (listed in order or preference):
  • The Kitchen Table - This was my favorite restaurant this trip! The Kitchen Table is located at the Jim Beam Distillery. Prices are very reasonable, and the food is fantastic! We tried appetizers: Pulled Pork Empinadas with white BBQ sauce (which was the best thing I ate all trip!) and Pimento Cheese and some Peppery Jelly spread (also great!). We tried the Burgoo which was good. And their burger was excellent! There are also some great Jim Beam themed pours and cocktails available. I had some of the "Kentucky Tea" Booker's which was just too good! I would have eaten here all trip if it was closer!
  • Mammy's - This is in downtown Bardstown, and we really enjoyed it! It's just great southern cooking. We ate their for breakfast one day. We had biscuits and gravy, and eggs and bacon. We also went back for dinner one night and had a BLFT with Pimento Cheese, Hot Browns, and fried cornbread. I'm drooling as I type just remembering how great this was! The bar also has a ton of solid bourbons and decent prices. They even have live music certain evenings.
  • Quick Stop - Old Riff swore by this place, and he nailed it! The Quick Stop is just a gas station on the way out of Bardstown. But they service awesome Jake's Country Sausage biscuits to go. This country sausage is just too good! We ate their on our way out to the Kentucky Cooperage and again on the way to the airport.
  • Hadorn's Bakery - This place is a hole in the wall serving donuts. They had one of the best jelly donuts I've ever had. Very solid.
  • Cozy Cottage - This is located by Maker's Mark. It's a total dive, but the food was decent and prices were fine. I got a burger, the wife had the pot roast special. I could take it or leave it.
  • Herradura - This is a Mexican restaurant in Bardstown. It was actually pretty good! The food was decent and came out very fast. Like most places in Bardstown, they had a hell of a bourbon selection at reasonable prices.
  • Sedona Taphouse - This was actually over in Lexington. They had a large amount of draft beers which I enjoyed. I also took advantage of the pours of Booker's for $15 and Stagg Jr for $10. Food was good as well.
Overall: We had a wonderful trip. We really enjoyed our time at Bardstown. Old Riff and the advice he provides on this forum is invaluable! Listen to this dude. There was a couple that hired a driver one day and we saw them at four of their five stops (the only thing they did that we didn't was they did a chocolate pairing at Lux Row). They paid $900 for their chauffeured experience! Ours basically cost us the price of admission plus a few hours poking around on Reddit's boards and distillery websites.
A few tips for those considering a visit to Bardstown:
  • Personally, I don't think you need a driver. The distilleries don't give you more than 2 oz on a tour. We weren't looking to drink a lot at the distilleries. But with some of the bar selections available at the distilleries it would have been easy to get carried away. That said, know your limits. If you are going to be drinking more than the 2 oz given at tastings, consider hiring a driver.
  • Reserve ahead of time, especially on weekends! Our Thursday tours were pretty empty. Sometimes there was only an additional couple or two on our tours. But the Friday and especially Saturday tours were much more crowded.
  • Don't get caught up in FOMO. There are plenty of bottles for sale at area liquor stores well above retail. There are also quite a few limited or distillery only releases. These don't necessarily equate to bourbon you will enjoy. Don't buy something just because it might be the only time you'll be able to get it.
  • Try before you buy! It's pretty easy in most cases to get a pour of something before committing to a whole bottle. You'll find a bottle which sounds like it might be your thing is actually something you don't enjoy.
  • Take the time to talk to people. There were definitely people that were there to "hunt" bottles. You could just feel the eye rolls by employees. These people walk in, ask for a bottle, and walk out. You're in Kentucky! Sit back and experience whiskey for yourself! Try a pour of something you've never heard of based on the recommendation of a stranger at the bar. Trade stories of restaurants/distilleries/attractions you enjoyed during your day. You might even get the inside scoop on something that you may have missed otherwise.
  • Bardstown outside of peak season lacks off hours attractions. We also could have missed them. But we found that most attractions and even locally owned shops opened at 10am and closed at 4pm. There wasn't much to do in the evenings other than pony up to the bar. It's fine, but a little variety would have been welcome. I'm told it's a little more lively in season. But we definitely enjoyed the smaller crowds.
Anyway, that's all I've got! If you're planning on visiting Bardstown anytime soon, I'm genuinely envious. It's a wonderful place. Thanks for reading!

2023.03.21 19:27 Phil_D_Snutz Is a condo developer allowed to do this to a condo he developed 15 years ago?

I'm in Hawaii and my condo developer decided during building construction 15 years ago to use seven storage units to construct his realty office on the ground floor. So now he's currently paying just $2100/year property tax and $80/month in maintenance fees which is less than one tenth of what residential unit owners pay for similar square footage. Many owners want him kicked out or at least charged a fair maintenance fee.
It seems the developer is using this section of the condo declaration as a loophole:
"The Developer, its agents, employees, contractors, licensees, successors and assigns, shall have (and the Developer hereby reserves) easements over and upon the Project, including the common elements, as may be reasonably necessary for the completion of the Project and the sale of all Apartments in the Project. These easements shall include (but not be limited to) the right to use model apartments, sales and management offices, parking stalls and sales displays and shall continue for so long as the Developer or the Developer’s successor or assign retains any interest in any Apartment in the Project."
Also, the house rules and bylaws state storage units are not to be used for anything other than storage.
This developer also owns over 200 storage units and parking stalls totaling 35% and 28% of total common interest and are worth about $9mil. It seems he's renting out these units while also cutting off supply to drive prices up.
Are either of the above legal? What can be done to change this?

2023.03.21 19:14 Lazy-Personality4024 Orphan Chapter 2

First Previous
Chapter 2: Now Is Found

The moment the Into the Black entered Sol, the human’s home system, various transmissions and radio signals poured in. At first, the captain and the rest of the crew thought that humanity was well and truly alive. But upon closer inspection of the deluge of signals they were receiving, they realized they were nothing more than automated warnings, echoes, and ghost signals bouncing around the countless derelict ships, stations, habitats, and arcologies that surrounded nearly every world and moon in the system. The place was a mass grave, far greater than any of the previous systems. In fact, this system was the most developed Ohmata had ever seen. The Galactic Union’s capital is the most advanced system in the GU, and it pales compared to the level of development of the human home system!
The sheer amount of death and destruction was frightening. Entire fleets worth of ships clumped together in the void of space. Their own mass creating a small gravity, pulling them together and fashioning massive hulks. While also creating hazardous clouds of metal debris, more than a few moving fast enough to rip the Black to shreds, should they not be vigilant. Constructs the size of cities floated aimlessly, stuck within the confines of the star’s influence. Mobile defense platforms, which once bristled with the finest weapons humanity could field, lay battered and broken amongst the many wrecks that called Sol home. Humanity did not go down without a fight, that much was for certain. If anyone ever called them cowards, Ohmata would simply show them the recorded footage of their home system to prove the naysayers otherwise.
There looked to be more metal strewn about from the battles and destroyed ships alone than in every GU fleet combined, and more than a few worlds, too. The difference in the ships was obvious. The human vessels were boxy, utilitarian. They did their jobs, and they did them well. Many of which appeared to be nothing more than massive guns someone built a ship around, then put more guns on that.
The Nemesis were different; they weren’t boxy and rigid angles like the humans, but not totally smooth either. They had a far more organic look with multiple bends and curves, but the surfaces seemed to be rough and bumpy, and unlike the human ships, almost none were symmetrical. But though they were asymmetrical, there existed patterns in the various derelicts. As if they were variations of preexisting models, updated and expanded upon with time. In comparison, most GU ships were a happy medium. They had the bends and curves like the Nemesis, but were neatly symmetrical like the human ships.
Looking past the destruction and death, the system was fairly average. Four rocky worlds, four gas giants, and several smaller bodies here and there. The gas giants still had the broken remains of floating cities scattered across them, while their moons contained colonies and stations galore. But what was most interesting were the third and fourth rocky worlds. The fourth one had depressingly little green on it. It was mostly red, with an occasional white streak indicating clouds. It was highly developed, ruined cities ranged across its surface freely. But it bore the marks of war none the less. It would be a prime candidate for collecting samples, as long as the surface wasn’t too hazardous. Humanity did have a fetish for nuclear annihilation towards their end, after all.
The third planet, the third planet was something else. It was a grey husk devoid of life. Its moon had a massive crater denting its facade, with many smaller ones marking its surface. They stood out prominently. Fresh wounds of war contrasted against natural meteor strikes. The debris from the lunar surface and whatever had caused the impact was already starting to form the semblance of a ring around the planet. And like everywhere else, the surrounding space was choked with battle debris, though most had collected in the planet’s “proto ring”. There was so much debris that they could barely scan the planet, and what parts they could get to was so irradiated that a signal couldn’t penetrate from such a distance. Which meant if they wanted to scan the home world of these legendary humans, they would have to get closer. Which, frankly, was currently impossible.
“Nix’Fa, can you maneuver through that debris field?” Ohmata asked, while peering down at her console.
“No ma’am. A shuttle may get through, but it won’t have any of the equipment necessary to scan the planet. At least, not at any reasonable rate,” Nix’Fa replied. She, too, was looking over her console at potential flight paths.
First Lieutenant Qhaax spoke up from her station. “We may not need to actually scan the planet to learn more about humanity, captain. Most of the planet is a flattened, irradiated death pit, but the debris field around it still contains warships from both sides, some in remarkable condition. In fact, several derelicts appear to still have power, even after thousands of years. We may be able to board them using a shuttle and extract data from any intact computer systems we find. And while not exactly human, there is a Nemesis ship relatively close to the edge of the field. It would be a good first target.”
“Then we’ll change our plan to that. Qhaax, contact Kitern and tell her to get her marines suited up, send a techy or two and some researchers with them as well. You’ll have to contact Tentzonta to get her to let some of her engineers loose for once, and Glevar for her researchers. Though you won’t have to convince her, she’ll be jumping at the opportunity. Nix’Fa, start plotting them a course, and we’ll go from there, understood?”
The two responded with a crisp, yes ma’am, and got to work on their respective tasks.
-
“Kitern, can you hear me?” Ohmata’s voice called out from Kitern’s suit’s comms.
“Loud and clear, cap, whatcha need?” Commander Kitern responded as she stowed away several more energy cells for her weapon. She was a digitigrade, feline like mammal known as a Lioranian, with thick paw like hands that held deadly claws within them. They were still thin and nimble enough to manipulate objects accurately, but most importantly, pull a trigger. Her kind also had a slightly elongated snout, long tail, and top forward facing ears. Their eyes were dark, but a few bore mutations which lightened the iris to a sky blue. And their pupils are vertical, but would dilate periodically to give better depth perception and low light visibility. Her species’ coats ranged from a dark tan to a bright yellow gold and had multiple coat patterns of varying intensities. She personally had a dusty tan coat with slight stripe markings originating from her spine, but quickly fading as they reached around to her abdomen and chest.
“You already have a basic rundown about what to do. But I just wanted to remind you, we marked an entrance for you through some old battle damage on a derelict Nemesis ship that is close to the edge of the debris field. Enter, make your way to the power source, secure the area, and set up a pressurized zone if possible so the techies can work in peace. If you can’t, oh well, they can work in their suits. Also, you see anything living, as unlikely as that is, don’t go shooting it. Try to capture or reason with it, but if it does anything stupid, then do what you and your girls do best.”
Kitern smiled maliciously. “Aye, aye, captain. We’ll keep the civvies alive and kick’n, get the goods and be back in no time.”
“Then I leave the rest to you. Oh, try not to mess with the shuttle’s controls while it’s on autopilot this time. It’ll be weaving through a debris field too compact to get the Black into. Any rescue efforts will take a long time, longer than what you’ll have, so don’t touch the throttle like last time!” Ohmata raised her voice jokingly, playfully reminding Kitern of the last time they were on a shuttle together in such conditions.
“Ha! Dontcha worry, I’ll be in the back. Onsa will be in the pilot’s seat for this go. She’s a better flyer anyways,” Kitern played.
“Alright then, get done and come back, preferable alive. Ohmata out.” There was a click as Ohmata closed the channel.
“Hmph, always do.” Kitern had been staring at a random wall while talking to Ohmata. With the call over, she turned to her squad. “Alright girls, get your shit together and get to the shuttle. Oh, and keep your hands to yourself, Hran is coming along, I don’t want any complaints from him, or hands where they shouldn’t be, got it?” she barked, eyeing each of the three other marines, more specifically the youngest two.
“What if he lets us?” one of said marines asked jokingly.
“It’ll be a cold day on Ca’tab before that happens, Asteli,” Kitern replied.
“You never know, we might just wear him down finally, right Gre’Namra?” the perky Venanian replied.
“How many times do I have to tell you? Just call me Namra, and I doubt it. Men like to be wined and dined. Take them out, pay for a fancy meal, maybe buy them something. You know, the usual,” her counterpart, a Drae’Ildan, responded.
Kitern sighed. “Or how about not harassing anyone and act like a decent sentient, you hornbags? Now, shut it and get to the shuttle. Dentala you’ll have your work cut out for you keeping track of these two today.”
“Not as big of a job as keeping track of you, I pity Onsa,” Dentala said as she lifted a heavy kinetic slugger with a red hand, another Venanian.
Kitern chuffed deeply, her species version of a chuckle. “Me too! But, you might wanna put on a glove before we go out. Might help with the whole vacuum thing.” Dentala looked at her hand, surprised that she had forgotten it, before slipping one on. It attached to her bracer and made an airtight seal, forming an armored gauntlet. With that, the four marines left to join their fifth member in the shuttle.
As they left the locker room, Asteli mumbled under her breath. “We wouldn’t do that. We’re not assholes,” she said, addressing Kitern’s assertion of harassment.
“Well, you sound like one,” Gre’Namra replied quietly. After that, they kept their heads down and trudged along with their commanding officer.
A short jaunt later, they were passing through the hangar bay’s airlock. They were greeted by the Black’s only two shuttles. One, small and cramped, meant for scanning dangerous locations that they couldn’t get to with the ship. Logically, that would mean it was best suited to scan Earth. But even its equipment was not powerful enough to breach the radiation. Not without descending into the planet's atmosphere and becoming so irradiated they would practically glow in the dark. And while they could get Aphosi to pilot the shuttle remotely, its scanners aren't able to scan such a broad area like an entire planet. They were more meant to target small, specific locations.
The second shuttle was much larger. It was built to transport supplies and the handful of rovers they had in storage, to make excursions to planets. The smaller shuttle had permanently extended wings and large thrusters on the rear. The larger of the two, simply dubbed Shuttle One, could fold its wings. And had a variety of thrusters located across the ship for better maneuverability in space, and atmospheric thrusters embedded in the center of each wing for flight in atmo. But it also had two large engines in the back for forward thrust, just above its rear ramp.
Walking over to shuttle one, Onsa, the other Lioranian in the squad, was already waiting for them in the pilot’s seat. In the rear seating area were two engineers and two scientists, wearing grey, lightly armored EVA suits that looked to be made of cloth, but were instead a variety of advance polymers and flexible but insulative materials. Most of the helmet was a large, one way transparent material, allowing for increased awareness while sacrificing protection. In comparison, the marine’s helmets had no exterior window, instead a suite of miniature sensors embedded in their black armored helmets allowed them to see through an internal display screen. The helmets appeared to be smooth metal from a distance, only up close could you see the microscopic sensors embedded in them.
The marine’s suits held many of the same features as the civilians, but were black and had thick armored plates over vital areas and on select parts of their extremities, with thinner, non-metal armor segments filling in the gaps. Both suit types had an array of pockets and hideaways, each holding their respective tools of the trade. Regardless of the accessories, or level of protection, each was specially crafted to accommodate for the unique physiologies of the different species.
Had the ship and its equipment not made with each of their species in mind, they would have worn generic multi species suits. Instead of the pre-built features tailored for their specific anatomy, they would be covered with a thick insulated, pliable material that fitted over the horns, tails, and crests and shrank until it was tightly pressed against every nook and cranny. Aside from personalized helmets, each species’ leg sections and gloves/gauntlets catered for whether they were plantigrade, digitigrade, or for how many digits they may possess.
Hran being a male Venanian, had small horns jutting out from his temples. But because his horns were so small, his helmet did not need any special features. Thus was fairly plain. It looked like a sphere that had been slightly squished in on the sides. Unlike the females of his species, who had much larger, curved horns, their helmets were marked with two twin armored segments sticking up like antenna. Otherwise, their helmets were just as “stubby” as his, for their flatter faces. At least, in comparison to the other species onboard.
The Shednae with their elaborate head crests and long faces, had a stubby mohawk like metal protrusion for their crests to fit in, and longer helmets to account for their heads. The Drae’Ildan’s helmets were similar to the Shednae. In fact, they could be mistaken for one another if not for the lack of a head crest. Lastly, the Lioranian helmets were quite plain, aside from the extended “snout” for their slightly longer faces and two nubs to house their ears located on the top of their heads.
Those with tails were likewise afforded a special area to put them, instead of the shrinking material normal for such species. The Shednae have a small knob like space for their short tails. While the Venanians and Lioranians had long thin tails, they could be coiled in the suit. Drae’Ildan suits had a much longer and thicker tail section that looked burdensome but was quite flexible. Their suits were also equipped with a much larger array of sensors to assist them, as the Drae’Ildan’s natural sensory organs were significantly dulled in such tight confines.
“I see the grunts have finally made their appearance. Why did you bother bringing so many guns with you? It’s a derelict that has been floating dead in space for thousands of cycles. There won’t be anything living on board.”, one of the engineers nagged, as the marines ducked into the shuttle. Though her helmet was on, it was clear she was a part of engineering by the orange stripe running along the left of her suite, and left sleeve. Mimicking their uniforms.
“And a fine hello to you Kass, you too, Hran,” Kitern said as she sat down across from the two Venanians and buckled in. Hran simply nodded silently. Kitern continued, “And as for your question, we have no idea what we’ll find. You want to be stuck out in space with no way of protecting yourself if something is there? Yeah, I’m sure it’s empty too. Doesn’t mean I’m taking any chances.” Kass snorted at her reply.
“Shavizi, Jurwa, what about you two, think we’ve over prepared?” Kitern asked the two scientists to her left. Their stripes were blue.
“One can never be too prepared! Though the heavy slugger seems a bit excessive, but as long as you don’t drop it on me, I have no complaints,” Jurwa, a Shednae, said gleefully, practically bouncing in her seat.
“I agree, organic enemies aside. The ship may have automated defenses still functioning. If so, they will have to be dealt with accordingly.” Shavizi added. Yet another Venanian.
“See Kass, they get it,” Kitern grinned smugly underneath her helmet as she leaned back and buckled herself in.
As the others sat down and buckled in, Onsa turned in her seat to see if they were all ready. Everyone confirming they were. She turned back around and started up the shuttle. Quickly putting it into autopilot, but still keeping her hands on the controls just in case. The shuttle slipped out of the bay, passing through the atmospheric retention field, and pitching down and to the left, heading for the derelict Nemesis ship.
As the debris field is so dense and dangerous, the Into the Black was several hundred kilometers away, clear of any potential danger. As such, the trip would take around five minutes before they reached the field, another six to navigate the debris, as it was so hazardous. The Nemesis ship in question was near the edge of the debris field, but still mostly intact, with some power readings emanating from within, a perfect target for research.
-
“We’re coming alongside it now. Once we have successfully magnetized to its hull with the docking clamps, I’ll decompress the shuttle and you can open him up,” Onsa called out, just barely turning her head back in their direction.
Kitern activated her comms so everyone could hear her clearly once the air was siphoned out. “Gotcha. Scans show two distinct points of power readings. Both look to be in the same place, or at least really damn close. We’ll take a right once we get into the ship and follow the corridor until it leads to a three-way intersection. Then we make a left, then a right, and we’ll be on track. The room in question will be along that corridor. Keep your eyes and sensors open for anything that looks Nemesis-y.”
“Oh, like the entire ship?” Kass chimed in.
Kitern rolled her eyes. “Onsa, give a countdown.”
Onsa nodded her head. “Affirmative. Decompression commencing in three… two… one… starting.” There was an audible hiss that slowly faded away as the air in the shuttle was pulled back into storage tanks for later use. “Decompression complete, safe to open the door,” she confirmed over their comms.
“Opening door. Don’t go floating off,” Kitern joked as she pressed a button near the hatch, causing it to slide open silently. Before them was a gaping hole in the side of what looked like a ship that had grown large warts. The human beacons had mentioned that the Nemesis ships weren’t smooth, but the reality was a bit more unsettling up close. The humans weren’t sure why the Nemesis ships were so… bumpy. But they knew it wasn’t actually part of the building process, as newly refurbished or repaired Nemesis vessels lacked the warty exterior. But they had seen no importance in investigating the reason, as they had no tactical or structural advantage. Humanity theorized they were damage, but what could cause metal to ripple and bubble? So it remains a mystery to this day.
Kitern lifted a foot, causing the magnetic lock on that boot to disengage automatically, then re-engage when she put pressure on it. Allowing her to walk forward until she was looking down into the hole. Kitern put a foot on the lip of the shuttle, and bent forward, pushing herself into the opening.
As Kitern floated into the ship, she could see the corridors were circular, with strange partitions along the edges. The partitions didn’t seem to move or close, so she guessed they were more decorative support beams than actual doorways. A second later, she put out a hand to stop herself from colliding with the far wall, and pushed downward, boots magnetizing to the floor. Upon magnetizing, she immediately lifted her weapon. It was a small energy-based firearm, similar in size and function to an SMG.
Looking down both directions of the corridor showed nothing of interest other than more of those strange support beams and closed bulkhead doors on either end. She noted the twisted metal and battle damage in the corridor caused by whatever had impacted the hull.
Before everyone had touched down, she started making her way toward their objective. She continued on until she reached the bulkhead door at the end of the corridor. It was not fully closed, only partially, allowing someone to grip between the two sections and pull them apart. She did just that. As the door slowly opened, Dentala came up behind her and lent her strength to the task. Grunting in exertion, they pulled the door apart until they could easily walk through. Kitern silently fist bumped Dentala on the shoulder in thanks before she continued on, weapon held at the ready.
As they proceeded through the derelict, signs of battle began to appear. At first, it was only a few scorch marks or kinetic impact craters on the wall. Then, what looked like dried blood from some ancient creature. It had aged into a sickly dark green color with a hint of yellow. A quick scan showed that no genetic material could be retrieved, it had long degraded into nothing. Though some sort of information could certainty be gleamed from the stain if they searched long enough, but the sample was unimportant, as it was not a focus of the mission. Pressing on, the signs of battle intensified, as well the amount of spilled blood. At one point, an entire corridor looked like it had been painted in viscera.
The team could only speculate on what had happened. Was it a mutiny? Civil war between surviving Nemesis forces trapped in the Sol system? Or perhaps the humans had something to do with it? But there was one thing on everyone’s mind as they walked through the ancient carnage. Where were the bodies? They hadn’t passed a single corpse yet, just blood stains.
“Captain Kitern, do you suppose we can slow down and so I can scan the ship a bit more? I can’t get a proper reading while moving like this,” Shavizi requested from the back. She had some sort of tool and was waving it back and forth across the surface of the corridor.
“You can scan the ship when we stop, and that will be when we get to those power signals. And once we make sure the place is secure,” Kitern responded, weapon still up at her shoulder as she swept the hallway.
“If that is your order,” Shavizi relented, but still attempted to scan everything they passed, incomplete or not.
It didn’t take long before they arrived at where the Black said the power readings were. They had weaved about the ship a bit more than desired. Several bulkhead doors were completely sealed shut, causing them to detour, but they managed it in the end. They were now standing in front of a large single door; it was nowhere near as large as the bulkhead doors that sealed off entire corridors, but it was large enough to allow passage with room to spare on all sides.
It too bore damage from whatever conflict had occurred within the ship. The door’s access panel was damaged, and the surrounding wall panels warped. Preventing them from directly interacting with the door.
“This is the place; my scanner is already picking up power readings from here. Hran, be a dear and get out the interface tools. We’ll see if this door has power first, instead of brute forcing our way through first thing,” Kass stated. Hran silently carried out his orders, unpacking a variety of tools they may need.
After pulling off several of the panels to see if they allowed access to the door’s wiring, they eventually found the right one. Sadly, a closer inspection revealed that the door, like nearly the entire ship, had no power, meaning it couldn’t be opened by the press of a button like they wanted.
“Oh well, do what you do best, Kitern,” Kass shrugged as she and Hran began packing up their tools.
“Eh, worth a shot. Privates, if you please,” Kitern motioned to the door for the two young marines to take a crack at it. They both replied with a crisp, yes ma’am, and quickly got to work trying to pry open the door.
It took a little more effort than they thought, but over time it slowly slid further and further open, until Gre’Namra wedged herself in between the door and frame, and used her entire body to push it open. Asteli joined in when it widened enough for the both of them. Together, they pushed it fully open, the door slowly recessing into the wall. Revealing an old dusty room with several long bed-like pods.
“Thank you, girls. Now clear the room while you’re at it. Though by now any baddies would have chewed you up,” Kitern ordered. The two did just that. Thankfully, the entire room could be seen from the doorway, so there really wasn’t any clearing. Just looking behind the pods for anything not so friendly.
During their little search, they noticed one bed had several lights flickering on its side. They pointed it out to the others. Immediately, Kass and Shavizi pushed them aside to get to it. Drooling over it like children being offered sweets.
“I wonder what this is?! After so many thousands of years, it still has power. I thought those beacons were incredible enough, but this is something else!” Kass said to no one in particular.
Shavizi had been scanning the bed, as well as its neighbors, while Kass looked it over. “Hmm. The pods have a sliding covering that encloses the occupants. All the others are open, yet this one is closed.” Shavizi tapped at her scanner a bit. “Wait… the other energy signature… it’s coming from inside it!” she said astonished, while moving a hand over the top of the slid that covered the pod. As she did, thousands of years’ worth of dust floated away from where she dragged her hand. Allowing a small amount of light to break free from within.
Noticing this, Shavizi leaned forward and peered inside the pod. Her eyes went wide as her mind tried to make sense of what she was seeing. “GET BACK! DON’T TOUCH IT!” she screamed, but was too late. Kass, who was now crouched down near the base of the bed, had pressed a finger to one of the flickering lights just as Shavizi yelled her warning. All Kass had time to do was turn her head up and mutter a confused, “huh?”, before the covering of the pod slid open, unleashing its occupant onto the galaxy.

Hello once again! First things first. If you see the name Osan, please point it out to me. It is supposed to be Onsa, but the program I use to write the story changed the name to Osan for some reason. Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the cliffhanger! This chapter is meant to help further detail the various species and their features, and of course set up for many things to come!
Also, in my last story. I had a lot of flashback sequences to add in fluff and give backstory to the MC. While I don't want overuse it in this story, I do want to have flashback esque sequences that are basically just battles of the Human-Nemesis war (recorded combat footage recovered from human ships and installations), introduce new characters, or maybe give further development to preexisting characters. The flashback sequences will be called Orphan: Tales of the Past and won't begin until a certain point in the main story. Once that point is reached, the side stories will pop up every once in a while in place of the main story chapters. Or, if I fell as if its safe to push the story ahead, you'll get the main story and a side story in one week.
That's it for the week folks! See you next week!
