2023.05.04 21:07 BeehivioralProblems Question about resigning membership

So I resigned my membership the Sunday before last but have not gotten a letter from the church saying my membership has been removed. But I can't see the ward directory anymore or my "ordinances" on my lds account. Does this mean it's finalized? Are you able to still login to LDS.org after being removed? Do you get an email as well or just a letter? Our mailbox opens in the wind and we have had some windy days. I am mildly concerned that the letter got blown away but am not sure how to go about getting verification that my records have been removed. Any advice is appreciated

2023.04.25 00:49 3am_doorknob_turn PIMOs, does your LDS ward have any convicted sex offenders? Here's how to find out in 5 easy steps

This simple 5-step guide will help you find out whether there may be people attending an LDS ward/branch who have been convicted of sex crimes.
If you're PIMO, you're more likely to 1) be attending a local Mormon church and 2) have login access to your ward and stake membership directories via the Member Tools app or LDS church website.
However, anybody can use these steps.
In this guide, "ward" means a local Mormon ward, branch or group.
NOTE: Do \not* use this guide to bother, harm, stalk, harass, bug, annoy, harangue, torment, exasperate, beleaguer, hound, disturb or otherwise be a pinecone to anyone.*
  1. If you can login and view your online ward directory, open it up and copy the names and personal information of any adults you wish to research.
  2. If someone is attending church that isn't an LDS church member or doesn't show up in the ward directory, consider checking on them as well.
  3. For each person you're checking on, use the following websites to search for them by name/location:
INTERNATIONAL
Newspapers.com: https://www.newspapers.com (costs money, offers a free trial)
You can use Newspapers.com to help you confirm a person's identity and learn about key events in their life (such as birth, high school or college graduations, LDS missions, marriages or LDS temple sealings, deaths of family members, etc.). You can also search for their name plus keywords like "sentenced" or "arrested" and sometimes find local news articles about any court cases they may have been involved in.

NATIONAL - UNITED STATES
The Dru Sjodin National Sex Offender Public Website: https://www.nsopw.gov (free)

NATIONAL - CANADA

NATIONAL - AUSTRALIA

NATIONAL - UNITED KINGDOM AND IRELAND
For other countries, try searching in a search engine for "[country name] court case search."

STATE-BY-STATE: UNITED STATES
Search state and local courts for court cases involving people on your list.
Examples from areas with higher Mormon populations:
If you're stuck, fire up a search engine and search for "[state or county name] court case search."
When you find matching court records, look for the case "disposition" - that's how the case ended up. You'll be able to see if the person was convicted (found or pleaded guilty), acquitted, etc. and also what their criminal sentence was, if they were convicted.
  1. Do a quick geographical search for registered sex offenders in your desired area.
Note: Not every convicted sex offender is a \registered* sex offender. For example, as part of a plea bargain, a person may be able to avoid having to register as a sex offender.*

  1. Search https://floodlit.org (a database I help maintain) for the person you're checking on, or for the city/state/country you're interested in. It's a database of LDS sex abuse and sex crime cases. There's an advanced search tool as well: https://floodlit.org/search/ Oh and a map too: https://floodlit.org/map/
I hope this helps you in your journey.
If you'd like personal help in your research, let me know. I've got access to some people finder tools and some experience researching LDS sex abuse cases.
Not everyone is a sex offender. But a sex offender can be anyone, and sexual abuse can happen anywhere - even in a Mormon chapel or temple.
We're still gathering information at floodlit, but my guess is that on average, every Mormon congregation has one convicted sex offender, plus several members who have committed sex crimes but were never convicted, or perhaps never even prosecuted.
What tools/websites or steps could be added above? Have you found any sex offenders in your local Mormon ward?

2022.08.01 19:52 future_weasley Has my resignation been processed?

About 6 weeks ago I worked with my bishop to get my resignation (and those of my family) processed. He assured me it was taken care of on his end, but I have concerns.
I’ve previously read on this sub that the tell-tale sign that the resignation has been processed is that your LDS login won’t work anymore (error for incorrect email or password,etc.). I am still able to log in, but when I navigate to the “membership” tab of my profile I am unable to proceed without associating my membership record number to my account. This is new. HOWEVER, I am still able to access my patriarchal blessing through pb.churchofjesuschrist.org.
Does anyone have more information on this? Any further insight?
Thanks

2021.02.27 01:28 mikexcao Frequently Made Posts & Questions v2 - READ THIS BEFORE POSTING!

The old post got archived like three months ago, so here's a repost for the sake of opening comments back up
Please take some time to read this before making a new post on this sub. You have been warned.
As your beloved /PennStateUniversity overlords moderators, we deal with a ridiculous amount of reposts. So. Many. Reposts. (Reddit, when are you going to improve your search function?) So out of our sheer benevolence and utter boredom, we thought it would be cool to make an FAQ thread addressing all these endlessly reposted and often-asked questions.
Yes, this means all further reposts will be removed with extreme prejudice.

Most Frequent Reposts and Questions:

- Best Gen Eds:
See this thread.

- What do I do if I received an academic integrity violation?
See this thread.

- Best On-Campus Jobs?
See this thread.

- What's Penn State like? I want to apply / applied / am applying and have never visited.
Here's some nice, high quality threads on what State College is like, freshman FAQs, common prospective student questions, why you should go to Penn State, why you should do LEAP, and the best on campus jobs (#2). See these awesome non-Reddit links for more on what Penn State is like. If you have any other questions, join the Discord linked in the sidebar to get your question answered more quickly - there's almost always someone online who can answer it immediately.

- How do I find out about events going on around campus?
For careeacademic events, keep an eye on your Penn State email. Your college and most organizations on campus are pretty desperate for people to go to their events - so go to them! You'll probably get emails from your college, Penn State Today, the Multicultural Resource Center, and more on a regular basis. You'll also find flyers in your residence hall, commons buildings, and almost every bulletin board on campus.
For other events, most organizations make a semi-decent effort to publicize their events, and by signing up for some email lists at the involvement fair (please go) you'll end up on their lists for event outreach. Don't be that dude who signs your friend up for every single club's email list, though.
Lastly, restrooms in the HUB, residence halls, and certain other buildings have event-related newsletters posted in each stall. Some nice reading while you do your business!

- How do I connect to [x] WiFi network?
For students, go here for your main devices and here for your dorm-related smart devices. For guests, if you're a university student, eduroam is probably the way to go (it likely works with your own university's login). For visitors, try connecting to the new psu-guest network on campus.

- What are the job or internship prospects for my major?
It greatly varies - and it depends on the person. Penn State boasts the largest alumni network in the world, and looking for Penn State alumni at companies you apply for is helpful - especially recruiters. Most departments and colleges maintain some kind of job statistics database and career assistance program, so try looking there for resources like how to write a resume, how to apply for jobs, and etc. I will say the IST career site is the best of them all though. Overall, you determine your own future, and Penn State will only help you with that.

- How do I get help with my classes?
There's a ton of resources on campus to help you out with classes if you're struggling or need help. Professors usually offer TAs, office hours, tutoring, and maybe even a message board to help you succeed in their courses. Past that, Penn State Tutoring, LionTutors, and others are great resources. Your tuition is paying for Penn State Tutoring, TAs, and office hours, so make sure to make the most out of those.

- What do I do if I'm going to fail a course?
Easy answer: you should drop or late drop it, if you've already tried your best to improve. Keep in mind there are deadlines for dropping and late dropping (see the Academic Calendar for details) and that LDs appear on your transcript. Employers typically don't mind 1-2 non-major-related late drops, but more than that will probably hurt. Do keep in mind your GPA and your financial aid when looking at dropping a course though - as well as losing full time status below 12 credits. If you can't late drop or drop the course, look at grade forgiveness - a great new policy that only recently came through.

- How do I check my academic requirements?
A simple Google Search for "psu academic requirements (major)" will usually do the trick - each college has lists of ETM and major requirements for each of their majors! To easily check your progress towards the requirements, you can create a What-If Report in LionPATH that will tell you what your progress is :)

- What are the best dorms on campus?
That's a really subjective question, and everyone has their own opinion on it. While we do plan for a post covering this extensively eventually, here's a quick summary of the pros and cons of each residence area (if you have any suggestions for additions, let us know):
East Halls
Pros Cons
Mostly Renovated Distant From Most Of Campus
Freshman Only Some Unrenovated Dorms
Lots Going On Oftentimes Noisy
West Halls
Pros Cons
Close to Engineering/IST/Library/HUB Far from Beaver Stadium
Quiet Not as much going on
Superior cookies and paninis Relatively Unrenovated
North Halls
Pros Cons
Quiet AF Meh Food
Close to Business/Arts/etc Far From Downtown
Suite-Style Dorms Expensive $$$$$$
Individual Bathrooms No "Freshman Dorms" Experience
Renovated Dorms Tiny Commons
South / Pollock Halls (they're like the same area lmao)
Pros Cons
Lots Going On Pollock is like living in the 1960s. The dorms are that bad.
Next to Downtown South = Honors Dorms (quiet af)
Sorority Central ;) Tall Bois
South Renovated = nice Traditional-Style Dorms
Great Food Tiny Dorms

- I got into [x] branch campus and want to go to University Park. Can I transfer?
Short answer: no, otherwise branch campuses would be a ghost town. You probably won't be able to switch to main campus until junior year (2+2 plan) so make the most out of your two years at your branch. Most branch campuses have their redeeming characteristics - particularly Behrend - and you can live your college life to the fullest at a branch campus just as well. Main campus is no further than three or four hours from any branch, so you can still drive up to main for football, partying, and to get the Penn State experience.

- What are my chances of getting in?
In terms of University Park, the relative agreement is that you need at least a 1160 SAT, 25 ACT, and 3.0 GPA to get in. Results vary widely, though - Niche has a ton of stats on your relative chances of getting in with your specific SAT, ACT, and GPA. They also like to see a decent mix of extracurriculars to know you're not a boring fuck, but the fact that admissions is rolling and there's no essay makes for a relatively easy application.
In terms of Schreyers, it gets a hella lot more competitive. Expect to need a 3.8 or above GPA, a 1450 or above SAT, 30 or above ACT, and stellar extracurriculars to get into Schreyers. You'll also need to write essays and go through an interview to be considered. The benefits are nice, though - you get cushy dorms, great advisors, the chance to do research and publish a thesis, and tons of scholarship money.
Branch campus requirements vary widely, so again, check Niche for the stats on your branch campus. The common conception is that getting into a branch campus is relatively easy, to the point where some branches are more community colleges than actual branches, so you shouldn't have too much of an issue unless you're doing law or medical school or something.

- Best Gen Ed Classes?
This is a very subjective question and dependent on what you enjoy. I'll add links soon, but some well known ones include ASTRO 7N and EGEE 101. A quick Google search will give you lists upon lists of others, but do be aware that it is very highly dependent on what you enjoy and what you're looking to learn from gen eds.

(to be continued - please comment with questions you think would be beneficial in this FAQ while we work on expanding it!)

2020.10.29 16:12 subvertex Pro tip: if you live in the EU (inc. UK until end of year) you can resign easily per GDPR

Got this idea from another exmo redditor. Under the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation, you basically own your data. So as a resident of the UK (which is still bound by EU laws until the end of the year) I emailed the Church’s Data Privacy Office asking for all data/information/records they have on me to be destroyed per GDPR.
Fewer than 36 hours later and I got an email confirming my request had been accepted and I’d get a confirmation letter in a week or two. Already tried my lds.org login information and it was rejected.
It’s nice to have this out of the way, painlessly and free too. Was about to get my quitmormon letters notarised for about £100. Glad I didn’t.
P.S. I should note that I’m American and my records were in a student ward in Provo, so I was pleasantly surprised this worked, especially since I didn’t provide proof of residency in the UK. Makes me think anyone could send a similar email, claiming to live in the EU, regardless of where they actually live.

2019.10.23 19:18 kungfuthelegend Sterling Van Wagenen, Temple Video Director, BYU professor. All Media Coverage

Sterling is now currently in prison for abusing a young family member who came forward after my story broke.
The church coincidentally dropped their temple films one month before my recording was released. I know how they got wind of my story, but it doesn’t matter now. Anyone who is willing to open their eyes can see the correlation in terms of timing.
I had never fully come to terms with what happened to me as a child. While on the surface it appears I am a successful, well adjusted family man, there still existed very real scars from the emotional trauma. I agreed to this meeting with Mr. Van Wagenen in an attempt to finally achieve closure. Not knowing how Sterling would act or what he would say, I decided to record the conversation.
Why release the tape and embarrass Sterling for something that happened over 25 years ago?
There are several factors that went into my deciding to release the recording. I think the conversation opened my eyes to the injustice that occured in this situation with Sterling not facing criminal charges and going on to enjoy prestigious employment with the LDS Church even after having admitted to a felony. Sterling, in my mind, has never been held fully accountable for his actions. He did not tell the police a complete and accurate story of what transpired. Consider that even if he had only done the very thing he reported to the police back then, he would go to prison for 10 years by today’s standards. I know. I have talked to a prosecutor. Keep in mind, I could sue him and win a very large settlement that would probably bankrupt him. I have decided not to do that even though I could only because I love his children.
I wondered for 25 years if there were other victims of Sterling’s and even if there was not I still hoped that the story could bring some comfort to anyone who has been abused and feels alone.
He did indeed direct/produce the temple videos in 2014. That has been verified by several of his closest relatives and colleagues, as well as church insiders.
Why did the church so hastily discard their existing videos when they had only used them for a few years? Prior to that they used their previous videos for decades. These videos cost them millions to produce. They so hastily ditched the Sterling’s videos that they resorted to a quickly thrown together slide show PowerPoint that has been described as “makeshift” and Archaic. What are the odds of that? Most everything they do is well thought out and well funded. Not this time. Videos ditched January 2019. My story broke February 2019. 🤷‍♂️
Sterling was reported to his Stake President Harold Brown in 1993 when the abuse occurred. President Brown, a Psychologist happened to be the Head Of Church Social Services for the entire church. Why did Sterling remain employed by BYU from 1993-1999 and another long stint in 2010 or thereabouts?
I feel strongly that this story can highlight a real problem in the system. That a child can be abused via a church employee and yet the multi-billion dollar institution never offers any help in the healing process. Never even checks on the victim’s welfare. No counseling offered to victim or for church employed perpetrator. Why was Harold Brown or anyone else, no not on my doorstep or in my living room checking on my well being!!? There was never anything. My own parents who are active, believing members have admitted that they don’t understand why there was no concern for me, the victim.
Why would the Church use an admitted child Sex abuser to direct one of its most sacred ordinances of all, the endowment (videos)?? The guy openly admitted to affairs with men and women, and he slept with prostitutes on top of sexually abusing myself and other children. In the recording he admits to never confessing the affairs. Where is the discernment from the tip top? You know, the old white haired guys who are supposed to talk to God. God’s Oracles. His mouthpieces.
The best question I got from a close friend who recognized it was me was, “wait, Sean how did you stay in the Church for so long?”
———
What did Sterling lie about when I interviewed him? 1. He lied about doing the temple videos. 2. He lied about what he did to me to the police. 3. He lied about trying to coerce me out of the bathroom repeatedly, even said he never knew I went to the bathroom although it is in the police report 4. He only told me about his male affairs, many affairs, and his prostitutes because I dug it out 5. His wife kept this a secret from her adult children and allowed the grandchildren to have sleepovers at her house and to be alone with Sterling. Sterling claimed their had never been a problem. He was dismissive of my repeated questioning. 6. I caught him admitting that he never confessed affairs to the church and never went through any kind of church discipline for those affairs 7. He committed a felony crime upon me. He never had to pay for his crime. Even the church essentially gave him a slap on the wrist and then continue to utilize him for their projects and offer him prestigious employment. From a civil point of view, if he had merely done what he “said” he did to me now in this day and age, even if he just said that he patted my pants, he would go to prison for 10 years. He never paid a price. 8. Keep in mind that I can still sue him civilly and take away everything he has. 9. Sure enough. He did it to his own family member, a child, and he also lied to his entire immediate family about that repeatedly. I believe and have some evidence that there are other victims.

2019.07.02 20:17 Suulace The Struggle to Delete LDS.org account

I was searching how to delete my LDS.org account when I stumbled across a couple of forum threads on TSCC's Tech forum that dropped a couple of gems:
The OP asked:
How does one go about completely removing an LDS Account login as if it was never created in the first place?
And the responses:
deleting your LDS Account is a huge step; make sure you understand the ramifications before you do that... Before you do that, make sure that you are properly evaluating the security risks you think are so great that you need to take this drastic step.

The first question I have is why anyone would want to delete the account. It's a useful thing for all sorts of purposes. I can't imagine why any person would not want an account. Even if they have no plans to use it, what harm does it do?

Point 1. accounts can NOT be deleted.
So, apparently they can't be deleted?
Personally, I already obfuscated the hell out of mine with first name "FUCK" last name "YOU". I can't get back into the account because I didn't keep the throwaway email and password I used. I already tried emailing them to ask them to delete the account, and they never responded so that was my way of dealing with it. Idiot me made the account with my first middle and last name as the username so I was concerned about my information being there when I had no intention of using the site.
Anyone manage to delete their LDS.org account?

Hi Everyone,

There is a record online that I have found that I would like to be able to see on Family Search, but it says it requires an LDS login to view it. It is a document for Germany Births and Baptisms, 1558-1898, and i'm looking for Hanns Oster Allgayer.

It shows this as the URL for the document: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:V4L3-NH9

Would anyone want to help with this?

2019.04.10 02:00 HonestCase Musical Drawbacks?

Musical Drawbacks?
I enter the Brigham Young University testing center for the first time. My hand begins to graze the long room dividers as I advance towards the front desk. I approach a blond-haired woman standing behind the counter, she smiles at me as I make my way towards her. Upon reaching her, I blurt out, “This is my first time here and I am not sure how this works.”
She smiles again and replies, “That’s okay, I will help you. May I please see your I card?”
I fumble through my left pocket for my wallet and hand her my I card, thankful that I hadn’t forgotten it. After handingme back my card, she points her finger towards the far end of the counter, and explains, “Over there next to the printer you will receive your test, and then you have a choice of two rooms on where to take your test. You may either go to the large testing room where it is silent”, she then turns and points towards another door, “or you may go into this room where classical music is played. I personally like taking tests there.”
“I’ll have to try it out, thank you.”, I reply as I make my way to the end of the counter.
I receive my test and stride my way towards the music room and upon opening the door, I hear Mozart. The vibrant strings and musical chords accompany me as I sit in my chair and begin my test. Yet while taking my exam, I couldn’t help but ask myself, “Is the music supposed to help?”
It turns out that abundant research has been performed to identify whether music benefits students while they are studying or taking exams. And although many people claim music helps them achieve better in school, studies have shown that studying or test taking with musical accompaniment does not improve student performance.
In 1993, Frances Rauscher, Gordon Shaw, and Catherine Ky began an experiment on whether classical music improved spatial reasoning and IQ among listeners. In their study, they found that after listening for a period, a person’s ability to process information became enhanced for a small window of time for about 15 minutes. After releasing these results to the public, many trusted this study and began to implement classical music into many schools and programs. They even began giving babies a dose in order to increase their learning capacity. Yet with over 20 years since this experiment, further research revealed that so-called, “Mozart Effect” was false.
Researchers from the University of Berkley California investigated the study further and concluded that,
Given the lack of a Mozart effect in children, and the equivocal nature of the effect in adults, at present, there would appear to be no immediate spatiotemporal benefits of exposing children to Mozart. Simplistic solutions like the Mozart effect can create false impressions about child development and mislead well-meaning parents into purchasing products they might not have otherwise (Rauscher, Shaw, and Ky 314).
Through this research, we understand that despite the public’s skewed viewpoint on Mozart’s music, scientists have proven otherwise. Yet the question remains, why do people continue to listen to music while studying even when research proves the idea false?
One of the most common responses to this question is that it helps students focus on the task at hand and not get distracted. However, this opinion may not hold much credibility. In a study done by Peter Chou, a professor from the University of Indiana, conducted research on whether background music during test taking benefited a student’s performance. There he stated, “The conclusion from the authors is that music has the same disruptive effect on writing as background speech. It was recommended that a student’s best work would be to word process in silence and to reduce background sound to a minimum” (3).
According to Chou’s research, the ideal circumstances to achieve the highest grades is in a place where fewer distractions are present. This makes sense. Even the University of Stanford agrees after concluding their own study on how music affects our brains. They observed that “Peak brain activity occurred during a short period of silence between musical movements - when seemingly nothing was happening” (Baker 2).
What the University of Stanford is exactly what scientists have found out about the brain. There are two sides of our brain, one that is conscious and directs our actions, and the other that is unconscious but pays attention to the activity around us. It acts quicker too. When you hear a sudden noise in your home, your brain can’t help but process the information. The problem lies when we experience boredom, that is when our unconscious brain is the most active, and more likely to become distracted. The more input our brains need to process, the less power it can place completing other tasks. In addition, compared to silence which offers no academic interferences, the amount a person could study would increase due to less wasted time in other pursuits. It’s just better not to risk it. But perhaps people study with music other than for academic motivation; maybe they listen because it provides emotional support to the user.
Students experience stress, and many use music as a form of “self-help”, in order to relieve stress and allow studying to become a more enjoyable experience. However, listening to your favorite Katy Perry song while writing an argument essay may not stand as a good combo. Research completed by Nick Perham and Harriet Currie, two professors of phycology from the University of Cardiff Metropolitan University in the UK, examined had whether music that had sentimental meaning for its audience would prove to be more distracting. They explained that
With regard to participants’ ratings of the sounds, they liked and found more familiar, the quiet and liked music conditions compared with the disliked and non-lyrical music conditions yet found the liked and disliked music conditions (both contained lyrics) more distracting than the non-lyrical music and quiet conditions (Perham and Currie 282).
This study proves that even though a song might be enjoyable to the listener, it does not benefit the student and it detracts their attention from the task at hand. Do not get me wrong, music is a God-given. As the strength of Youth pamphlet explains, “Music can enrich your life. It can edify and inspire you and help you draw closer to Heavenly Father. Music has a profound effect on your mind, spirit, and behavior” (11).
From this quote, we comprehend that good music can positively impact our lives. Then how could schools or universities use this tool? It’s simple. Listen beforehand.
Researchers from Psychomusicology, an academic journal that specifically studies how music affects our brains and neural networks, launched a study exploring the effects of music on student test performance. There they exposed students to either calm or aggravating music for five minutes, and then given ten minutes to complete a 25-question test. During the experiment, analysts observed each participant’s blood pressure periodically throughout the experiment, in order to identify whether the music heard influenced the subjects to stress levels. In their concluding remarks, the researchers affirmed that, “…when pertaining to scholastic performance, fear of consequences from performing poorly on an exam has a large impact on a student's ability to optimally take an exam, but that listening to calm music beforehand may either reverse or cause less of a detriment” (Lilley, Oberle and Thompson 188) .
Based on this statement, we recognize that music provides relief for people experiencing large amounts of stress. If students utilize this tool that has been given to them in an appropriate manner, the test scores will soar.
So, contrary to the claims of The Mozart Effect, students do not enhance their academic performance by listening to music while studying or testing but cause themselves higher levels of stress and anxiety because they distract their brains from focusing on their work. If students wish to avoid mental strain, putting away their Spotify or Pandora for a couple of hours in order to prepare for an exam will give them the optimal conditions they need to succeed in their academic careers.
Now when I go to the testing center, I plan to avoid the music room. Although I may enjoy the melodious tunes of Beethoven and Bach or the masterpieces of Mozart—I know it’s not worth the risk.

2019.01.30 05:56 D_Tod_PissedOfferson Please Help! (Deleting Mormon.org Profile)

I am currently job searching, so I decided to search my full name on google. The second result that comes up is my Mormon.org profile! I made it almost six years ago, and a lot has changed since then. I no longer agree with the church's teachings and I want it removed.
Unfortunately, no matter what I try, I cannot find a login page for Mormon.org and I have no idea how to go about deleting the profile.
Does anyone have any helpful advice? Has anyone had success in deleting their Mormon.org profile?
Edit: I sent an email to [email protected], and they deleted my profile (and they took their sweet time).
