2023.05.30 15:08 JulianSkies Blackriver Cases - Season 4 “Burned Minds” - Episode 1 “Near-Tragedy”

[ [FIRST] [NEXT>]
Season 4 “Burned Minds”
Episode 1 “Near-Tragedy”
Kessa was, as is common those days, bored out of her mind. She didn’t have many assignments anymore, having been unofficially moved out of the precinct’s usual fieldwork, and any good exterminator knows a boring day is a good day. Especially in the unit she was in right now.
It’d be unfair to everyone involved, especially herself, to call her and Nila a unit. They weren’t even officially members of the only-theoretically-existent Psych Unit, whose entire job was to offer information and initial psychological guidance for whoever they found on the site of ‘predator disease’ calls. Instead of sending some muscle and forcibly dragging people for treatment, which would be the precise opposite of helpful in the human methodology, the Psych Unit would arrive first and just talk.
“Because fuck separation of duties” was how Santos had very succinctly described why, given the recent changes in policy, the exterminators were even still the ones doing this job. So here she was, eternally waiting for a new call she hoped would never come. In the meantime she had managed to get her hands on a few digital books about human psychology, she had no pretensions of having even the slightest hope of learning anything out of them, she knew it’d require much higher education than she had after all, and likely multiple years of study. But she was determined to try.
Academic books are, sadly, not a solution to boredom. So she’d been getting restless sitting at her desk, her brain had reached its limit for stale, dry learning and being only halfway through her shift she didn’t feel quite desperate enough to offer herself as a sacrifice to the administrative staff. Sadly, the boredom was interrupted by the familiar chime of her datapad, a particular chime only used when a new mission assignment was given.
Kessa’s tail swipes around in an annoyed motion as her ears flatten sideways in worry, the normal signs she gives at every mission. She looks down at her datapad and brings up the assignment.
The caller was, as always, entirely unrelated to the person being called upon, being merely the neighbor. The observed behavior was described as ‘anti-herd isolation’, seen stalking others and attempts of social deceit. All red flags, she’d have to admit, but that’s according to her training. The person they were being called on lived in… “Leva’s granddaughter?”
Nila seemed to simply materialize beside her as she always does, she’d get absorbed by the mission assignment and Nila could tell from a distance what happened because of her motions “That’s a bit of a complicated family”
Kessa tilts her head up “Why? I thought miss Leva’s family was pretty normal”
“It is, but they went through a lot” Nila starts “Leva’s a retired space force officer and her husband was a fellow officer and died in the line of duty as well, her son-in-law and daughter were in the space force too. Her daughter nearly died in an engagement that killed her in-law, and you know how it goes daughter wound up in an institution for a time, she got cleared and returned home but eventually her daughter just disappeared. So she’s the kids’ only guardian now.” she makes a motion for Kessa to follow her “Kids have always been a bit problematic but who wouldn’t be with that family history, right?”
Of course Nila could describe that whole situation in one sentence without a voice crack. She doubted this was the worst story the woman had heard, and if the rumors she’d heard from other precincts were right… Maybe the venlil weren’t quite as alien to the concept of psychology as she thought, they just didn’t have a word for it, and her partner was proof of it. “Kid sounds harmless enough from the looks of it. Deceit accusations accompany every call and isolation seems to threaten her own sanity more than those around”
The two walk down the armory’s hallway. An unfortunate stop for every time the two of them go to field, thankfully for better reasons than picking up flamers. She tilts her head to the side when she looks at who’s at the counter, the same tan pattern as her own greets her as they approach “Hey big sis” he says.
Her considerably taller brother, Vils, was also an entire cycle younger than she was and found particular joy in referring to her as ‘big sister’ given their height differences “What’d you do to get put in there?” she asks jokingly. Her brother is the precinct’s personnel/finances/archivist all-in-one as well as distressingly violence-averse for an exterminator, which was why the boss would sometimes discipline his indiscretions with armory duty, which in turn caused him to be the only qualified replacement for Marik.
Vils gives a dismissive tail wave “You weren’t around when the two went at it were you?” which ears him a confused headtilt from her “Yeah the two predators went at each other like beasts in here, I had to clean up blood for stars’ sake” he shudders visibly “So the boss sent them home to calm down and I got stuck with armory duty again
He tried, really. In Solgalic’s name her brother really did try, he was a kind soul that was the whole reason she was in the psych unit to begin with, but some things really were a little bit too ingrained. With a slow steadying breath she considers whether it’s worth the time to start a discussion, but no, they have a call “Well, we’re heading out” she pulls out her tranq gun holster and puts it on the counter.
Nila follows the same motion “Those two really need to find a healthier outlet for their emotions” she comments gently “I wonder if something happened?”
She watches as her brother effectively ignores Nila as he focuses intensely on his work, carefully getting the guns and the darts back in the proper place. The way he gingerly touched those objects making him easily take five times longer than their other armorer to finish the job “Can we just sign the turnin? Don’t want to keep the call waiting”
Her brother’s ears perk up “Oh, right” he pulls up a holopad “Here” and it’s a simple process to give their pawprints to identify they’ve returned their weapons.
And thus, properly disarmed, Nila and Kessa make their way back out of the precinct. Given the fact the precinct only has one car and due to the nature of their jobs being essentially non-urgent they’re required to make the trip on foot. Something they’ve grown to appreciate to a degree, as it allows them to prepare on the way “Who actually put the call in again?” Kessa says, pulling up her datapad to look at the call data.
“Seems like it was the neighbor” Nila comments, also looking down at her own device “Doesn’t seem like it’s the first call either, I’m seeing here. Hrm…”
Kessa turns an ear towards her companion, who has an intensely pensive expression “Something in particular you recognize?”
Nila tilts her head slightly to the side “Well, given family history… But those are kids, barely any experience…” her voice is serious, instead of her normal soft tone “Sorry, Kessa, I think this is more your area”
She halts for a moment before returning to walk “It’s not like I have an area? I mean, we’re both completely untrained here” with a sigh she continues “But… Bah. Best we can do is talk with Leva and just… Assess if the kid poses an imminent threat, which I doubt. Once we can confirm that just check to see if she isn’t mistreating the kid and leave at that”
Her partner turns her head to the side a little to put her in the center of her her eye “You sure the girl won’t need followup? Lack of socialization can be harmful to the isolated one, and in my experience it’s just aspects of socialization that people like this tend to have a problem with”
“What can we do, though?” she looks down the street, Leva’s house is getting close “You can’t force someone to socialize can you?”
Nila turns her focus to the street ahead “No, but you can help them find means. I remember Muffs back at Sun’s Crossing, he really was just very sensitive to stimulation, avoided contact with the rest of precinct all the time and everyone was wary. Until I figured out he just needed that pair of earmuffs that helped him with the noise, that’s how he got that nickname” the woman slows down her pace a little bit as they get close “We just gotta find what is happening, right?”
Kess sighs “IF they talk to us” she crosses her arms, a pretty alien gesture she hopes Nila will get without the others around noticing her unease “You know us showing up like this is never good news and there was a predator attack here not even a full paw ago”
Nila’s tail twitches around in a combination of annoyance and distress. She was more than aware of the truth “Let’s just talk to Leva, that should be enough for now.” and she goes to knock on the door.
The elderly venlil that opens the door is a familiar sight, old lady Leva is among the oldest residents of the town and her approach is often heralded by the sound of her carved wood cane tapping on the floor. And as Leva’s and Kessa’s eyes meet, she notices something in the old woman’s stare, something that’s familiar to both exterminators and soldiers.
You know what it looks like when a fellow is assessing danger, the particular way their eyes drift to keep important things in their best focus and how they always keep at least one exit path in their view range “Oh my, what can an old lady do for two young officers?” it hurt a little bit to be considered the threat, but it made sense.
Kessa hesitates for a moment, allowing Nila to pick up instead “Oh, we’re just here for a small conversation. We’d like to verify a situation” Nila had her hands in front of her “I hope you don’t mind the interruption to your day”
“Oh, please, it’ll be a pleasure” Leva says, waving them both in “I was just making some tea, why don’t you take a seat?” as she points to the sofas in the living room.
Leva was perfectly reasonable and welcoming, but Kessa could see it. The children were not here on the first floor, but she could hear the noises up above, and as Leva went into the kitchen she made sure to open a window and keep the back door open, the specific sofas she had motioned to were also the ones furthest away from the stairs. Military evasion arts techniques, part of their training they shared with the exterminators. Focus, she sees you as a threat for a reason, you’re here to show that reason isn’t true.
Leva returns with tea, deep crimson and sweetened with plenty of sugar. A calming tea, harmless, which just made Kessa more on edge “So, what can this old lady help with?”
Nila looks at her, and Kessa sighs “Well, we’re a little worried about your granddaughter” she puts her gentlest voice, trying her best to be unthreatening “We’ve heard she’s being isolated by the herd, and that can have a serious impact on her wellbeing” do not point to the kid as the source of the problem.
Leva gently drinks her tea, good leg crossed over her bad one, her cane over her legs “Oh, I wouldn’t worry. The poor girl has her problems to contend with but she isn’t lonely” she takes a slow, deep breath “She has been making friends, but you know how it gets, with just her old grandma to help out here they tend to need to stick here to help me”
This simply isn’t right “Leva, ma’am” Kessa starts “I know why you think we’re here. I can see what you’re doing, and I don’t mind it. But I promise you that you’re incorrect” she turns to get a look out a window “So… Let me tell you something. Did you hear about little Jivan? Two-cycle-old the other side of town, near the river?”
Despite her unmoving expression, Leva’s tail puffs up “You probably heard the rumor, right? That he’s ‘diseased’?” Kessa slowly turns her head to stare at Leva “Just because he likes to chew on stones. And, like literally everyone else here has done at least once in their life, mistook a Skipperstone for a real stone.” she gives Leva a moment to let that sink in “But nothing happened to him, did it?”
Leva gently lowers her teacup “I see you don’t want to trim the bush by the edges” her entire body tenses “So say it already”
“We really are worried about the kid” she takes a steadying breath “We’re changing how we do things, and seeing if it works out. You know how more and more dirt is coming out from those institutions, we’re trying to not use them anymore” she takes a sip of the tea, it helps “We all know what they do to people. So we’re trying to, well, at least here we’re trying to figure out what really is happening before we do anything.” the movement of putting her cup down is slow and deliberate to buy her mind time to think “To see if we even need to do anything”
Nila picks up when she stops “We’ve got more than one call on your granddaughter, she seems to avoid general contact, and the neighbors have more than once mentioned her stalking” she raises a hand to stop Leva before she starts “In my opinion, your granddaughter has some difficulty at socializing, and her failed attempts are being misinterpreted as stalking. Our main goal is helping her, I’ve seen more than my fair share of cases like this and I know all she needs to figure out her own particular how”
Leva tilts her head to the side “And what kinds of cases would those be?”
Nila tilts her head a little upwards, a mellow expression overcoming her body “Ah, there was Kisham over at Star Lakes, all the way over in the twilight. What was it, six cycles ago? Nobody really minds a gruff and serious exterminator that’s all business, but I could always see something was eating at him” she gives a whistly chuckle “It’s easy to notice a stressing out krakotl, you know, they start losing feathers. The poor man had no friends, not even in the precinct, but he’d also never really talk to anyone, and avoided everyone.”
“It took some prying from the team, but one day I managed to get him in the precinct’s group chat- You’d hardly believe it was him typing in the chat, always so much to say, so enthusiastic.” she waves her tail around in an amused manner “But if you walked up to talk to him? He wouldn’t say a word, he’d walk away from you. Do you know why?”
Leva tilts her ears in a negative “He really hated his own voice. Like, hated it so hard he was liable to hurt himself if he heard it. So he never used it, I think the humans would say he had trauma-induced muteness, something happened in the past to make him hate his voice that much” Nila turns her focus back to Leva “And that silence was hurting him, because he really did need a herd, but he couldn’t find one without a voice. Until we gave him a way to talk without it, that is. Did him so much good, he was even able to use his voice a little during field operations, especially because nobody ever asked him to use it otherwise”
Nila takes a deep breath “Sometimes, it’s all about figuring out the why, you know? It’s not unlike you” she points with her tail to Leva’s bad leg “Sometimes they just need a cane, really. And we’re here to figure if that’s the case”
Leva has an unreadable expression for a while “I’m not sure-” however, the grandmother was not allowed to continue her rebuttal as a terrible shout echoes from upstairs “NO!” followed by the sound of paws against wood.
“Leave” Leva orders, giving no space for response as she picks up her cane and stands up, going as fast as her bad leg allows upstairs
Kessa and Nila look at each other, and start heading out. No use helping someone that doesn’t want the help. “I’m not going!” echoes from above as they look up.
Up there, standing on the roof of the house, was a small venlil, barely done being a pup she must be twelve cycles at best “I-i’m” she was standing dangerously close to the edge
“We’re not going to take you anywhere!” Kessa shouts, as the situation suddenly escalates far beyond what she was prepared for.
“I-i know you want to!” the little girl shouts “I… I saw what happened to mom!” she steps closer “She… She just… Stopped… She just walked away!” the girl crawls over to the edge “I won’t you do that to me!”
Kessa is completely lost, this is far beyond her skillset, she look aside at Nila for help- But she’s in a call with… “Boss! Boss, this is bad, someone’s going to get hurt. We need someone, quick”
---
And so we have the, somewhat short, "Burned Minds" season with a bit of a new point of view of Kessa and Nila, the two undreprepared 'predator's disease' experts of the precinct, dealing with a dreadfully escalating situation.
Also I wish Reddit let me edit titles.

2023.05.30 14:47 itsallalittleblurry Z

Two PD officers had come to the door. Young men, both of them. Mother answered the polite knock. She’d been expecting them, after all.
She’d called in a complaint again about the ongoing prostitution on our end of the street. Past her house, there was a row of shabby one-floor connected apartments, a good number of them empty at any given time. The local street walkers would bring their Johns there.
Even after they were eventually torn down, as well as every other house or building on that block, that part of the street was still used for that purpose. Business conducted in cars parked along the curb now. The last time I was back for a visit a couple of years ago, it was still going on. Lots of curb space for parking now on an always-congested narrow street, but you had to watch your step. Used condoms were discarded everywhere. Some things change, and some things remain the same.
But construction finally began on a new apartment building complex there several months ago now, and the entire block was fenced off, and then no longer available for that purpose.
She would argue with them sometimes, the girls and their minders. Tell them to take their action somewhere else. Z used to tell her, to no avail, to just leave ‘em alone: “You’re gonna make me have to kill somebody, you keep this up.”
But the arguments were one-sided. After the severity of the public besting X had already given one man for insulting Mother, even the pimps and their girls were carefully polite to her. Z and BB were still around, and they knew that X’s release date was coming up soon. I was just home for a visit at the time.
Mother was well-dressed, as usual, when she wasn’t gardening. She liked to keep herself dressed and made up nice, even when at home. As she did her house. She’d never had much of anything when dad had been with us, and was making up for it now.
Mother had had a large portrait picture done of Z, and had hung it on the wall of the living room facing the front door, where it still is today. When she opened the door, one of the officers noticed the picture, nudged his partner, had said “Hey! That’s Z!”
“It Is him!”
“Do you know my son?” Mother asked.
“Ma’am” one of the Officers replied, laughing, “Everyone knows Z. When you see him, tell him Wade and Curtis said hello.”
That was the thing about him. The man was, and still is, nearly impossible Not to like, if he likes you. If he had or has reason not to, an entirely different matter.
And he could and can make people laugh. A benefit of seeming to still not be able to take much of the world or anything in it very seriously.
He was on a friendly first name basis with nearly every cop in our particular precinct, even though most of them had had occasion to arrest him at one time or another. They genuinely Liked the guy, and he never bore them any ill will.
They’d pull up to the curb just to talk sometimes, if they saw him or him and me walking somewhere.
On one memorable occasion, he’d had both officers laughing so hard the driver was having trouble seeing to drive. Him cheerfully telling cop jokes from the back seat on the way to lock-up. After they’d had a scuffle getting the cuffs on him in the first place. No hard feelings from anyone involved. It was all just part of the game.

2023.05.30 03:21 Iworkformycat27 90-Day Fiance, Love in Paradise, Cry Me a River, An Episode Review

In Sharp Entertianment’s latest dra-ma, the only show with more drama and less intelligence than a Trisha Paytas documentary, 90-Day Fiance: Love in Paradise, we see our protagonists, dealing with the consequences of their life choices, will they get their shit together, or will they not and, ensure a long career for themselves, ahhh, oh no, wherever else will they make at least $5,000 per episode? My imaginary friends are all fighting over what the superior Procyonidae is, anybody want to come film that?
Juan and Jessica
Juan is making soup out of rubber, he should have put one on instead, but nope he is making soup out of it, down by the river. Juan thinks this is amazing, Dawson doesn’t he, could he just fall in the river? Juan would love that, Dawson isn’t qualified to be in charge, maybe he could wonder into the- I’m sorry, I used to work at a daycare, who gave him the chickenhead they knew, kidnapped by a cartel? “The Promised Neverland” made me so lady hard.
Dawson is going to love being a big brother, what if they went spelunking and he never came back? You should be more patient- bitch do you have any idea how many Dawsons I knew? They’re still in the corner for being a tattle tale. They are also on an FBI watchlist.
And it’s Dayton who, understandably, he’s also questioning this entire thing, for his own reasons. He can’t come live with me, that would be kidnapping. Honestly, if I had to kidnap any kid it would be Aniko and Aspen, they deserve a day with a dog, and I deserve a day with their mother’s credit card, it would be an even exchange.
Is Dayton’s reaction normal? When father inseminated mother a second time I felt fine, I was going to teach that kid who was in charge, Pookums if you’re reading this, I’m da boss, go feed my small army of raccoons that I have in the garage, they like Black Bean Quesaritos like their mother.
Scott and Lidia
The language barrier totally isn’t an issue, this, how hard is it to learn basic Spanish? Is this a porn written by ChatGPT, I, honestly I would watch that, just to see the chaos. His penis did what? Scott demands a translator, to complain about the lack of conversation- why couldn’t Lidia learn English? They have no chemistry, she is most of the problem, he, is only 10% of the problem, he has done nothing wrong ever.
Roll that, what’s that, we don’t have footage of Scott, we just met him, roll that footage of Lidia not being the problem? Look at her recycling. Those street rats won’t form a dance crew by themselves.
But Scott hates Rats, and inspirational diverse leadsership, he just wants to be friends- and go back to his ex-girlfriend in Colombia, who totally isn’t contacting him again for money. Lidia is really taking this like a champ, at least this one isn’t married, she even made a rule- what is that angelic trumpet noise?
Archangel Gabriel: I am the Archangel Gabriel, today you have witnessed a mir-
Am I out of hummus?
Archangel Gabriel: No you, you literally just witnessed a miracle
Uhuh, do I have Pita chips?
Archangel Gabriel: You, is that all your wine?
It was either that or money, happy birthday to me.
Archangel Gabriel: You have a problem.
Sergeant Miko this man has broken into our home and insulted your mother!
Archangel Gabriel: Pointy Sticks!
Jordan and Everton
Jordan and Everton are starting fresh, she is over the cheating, she is going to go stare at the ocean, and the ocean is going to stare at her and the tree is going to, chickachicka boom boom time to tell Everton the truth, truth. He wants to see dat custom content, cue the commercial for Jordan’s OnlyFans, that has fed him for the past four years.
Also, she has great boobs, that make a lot of money, want to make me one of those videos baby? I can film all your nasty buts for my nasty bits. How many people across America are watching this? As long as we stop lying to each other this could really, wait, were the boat guys there too, did we get in a boat? Did you appease Poseidon with your breasts? Jamaica can’t afford another war.
Ana and Matthew
Ana is a sexy cat, Matthew is a sexy, was supposed to be a dog, what he ordered versus what he got, a cowboy is harassing his woman, so is Igor, so is that tree, it’s getting hard for her. Look at that wood, Matthew is going to fight that tree.
I give this episode 3.8/5 stars, the highlight was Scott and his man meat being the hottest ticket in town, what a douche, a financially generous and very stupid douche, Lidia is somehow not, heh, that really was- did that guy take any of my wine? I got some shitty Barefoot Moscato and Jesus- that dick, it’s still there.
The boat guys get an honorable mention because yeah, they get in a boat every day, but also, best day at work ever, they were so discreet too until they came on the screen and said “BOOOBS!!!”
Speaking of boobs, we might see more next week, Juan is confronted about his cheating, Valentine tells his family the wedding’s off, New Chantel cleans and Nicole evolves into a Shiny Charizard, Nicole use fire spin! Scott is so, anybody else coming up with a specialty cocktail for that? Just me, maybe I do have a problem.

2023.05.30 00:32 starchildofME Framingham MBTA station area - lost Hard Rock Cafe Guitar pendant

I tried to look for pics online to get a better visual of what the pendant looked like but can only describe it. I wish I knew this Reddit existed sooner as I lost the pendant between 2019 and 2021 iirc.
It was a black and white electric guitar in the shape of a Dimebag Razorback with 4 body points. It came from the Cleveland Hard Rock Cafe back in 2005 when I was in middle school. I can no longer replace it as the HRC is no longer there.

If ANYONE has happened upon this, I lost it somewhere around the Framingham, MA MBTA station and the Cafe across the street. I didn't realize it was gone until I was already arriving at South Station. It's such a long shot but I'd love to be reunited with that piece of my childhood.

2023.05.30 00:12 Worried-Apartment889 Ou puis-je trouver des photo du passé des rues de ma ville ?

Salut ask France,

Evelra swore. They had come here to uplift humanity from barbarism, not let the powers that be enable humanity’s worst elements while the selfsame Noble cunts indulged in their own pubescent masturbatory power fantasies. Fuck this. She thought to herself with a growl and flicked her comms channel to all units.

“All forces, this is Captain Evelra. The goddess-damned governess’s private militia have opened fire on the civies. Arrest those brother-fucking [bastards] on sight before they can fuck this mess up any further!” She barked over the comms, a bit of local English slipping into her words. She couldn’t call them stiffs; the latter had more class than this.

“Capt, we’ve got three APCs in militia markings barreling down the road in front of the Governess’s mansion from the west. ETA 30 seconds. This is about to get messy.” Prex’s voice cut in with a false calm lent by years of experience.

Evelra could feel the material of her suit creak as her hands briefly tightened into hardened fists. “All west side Pods converge on Pod 7, support Lieutenant Eleynor. Eastern Pods, evac the civies. And Prex? Keep the late arrivals occupied. Don’t let these fuckers get another shot off.” She growled, her Second giving a brief click of acknowledgement over the comms before switching channels to give orders of her own.

Turning back to face Isaiah, Evelra reached a hand down to grab the elder by his medical exoskeleton and hoisted him to his feet. “Looks like the Governess ran out of patience. Get your people out of here, we’ll deal with this.” She explained brusquely, jabbing one finger towards the eastern side of the boulevard. She could apologize for womanhandling him later, right now every second counted.

The moment she was sure he had his feet under him, the marine captain let go and tried to move on Eleynor’s position with all due haste. “Out of the way! MOVE!” Evelra shouted as she strode forward, the sea of humans doing their best to get out of her path. Already, people were starting to scramble as panic spread like wildfire. She could hear the cries of terror and confusion all around her; shouted orders from the protest organizers and her own marines were almost inaudible against the din as they tried to control the chaos.

As she neared pod 7’s position, a horrifying scene unfolded before her. In the shadow of the buildings, at least a dozen of the protesters were currently on fire. Harsh yellow and orange flames rose from the flailing figures to form hazy gray clouds of smoke that hung heavy in the air. Even more humans were covered in burn marks and charred clothes. One woman just sat there, trembling and numb from shock as she stared her bloody arm; the melted remains of her synthetic shirt peeling away with boiled skin. Amidst the chaos, the other protesters were doing everything from trying to help the wounded and burning to running in panic and terror; the latter creating a solid wave of bodies in front of Evelra as they stumbled over one another to flee the danger.

From out of sight, she saw one of the Governess’ militia-kitted thugs go flying; only to watch them get back up and charge in to fight whom Evelra assumed to be Pod 7. Shil’vati might be stronger, but when equally equipped, outnumbered and against human reflexes she knew that fight wasn’t going to end well for her girls if the rest of the western Pods didn’t reach them soon. Then, one of the militiamen stepped forward towards the crowd.

As he strode boldly through the mayhem, Evelra could only watch while one of the protesters tried to confront him; the tide of humans preventing the marine captain from intervening. Inaudible words were exchanged, the protester shouting something as they gesticulated wildly. The Governess’ thug merely responded with two swift strikes of his rifle butt, first to the gut, then to the back of the head, the other man dropping like an anchor. In the distance, out of the corner of her eye, she numbly noted that the rest of the governess’ thugs had arrived and were using their APCs as cover between them and the Pods under Prexith’s command.

Evelra felt her gut sink as the militiamen shouldered his rifle once more, stepping out of the building’s shadow to take aim at the crowd. “EVERYBODY DOWN!” The marine captain roared as she planted her feet and pulled her sidearm in one smooth, practiced motion. Drawing a bead on the Governess’ thug, the panicked crowd tried to clear out of her way; but there were just too many people. She wasn’t going to make it in time. No, no more. Not-

The militiaman’s head disappeared.

A split second later, the now infamously familiar thunderous crack and echoing roar of a large bore human chemical ballistic rifle rolled over them as the corpse spasmed on its feet; a shockwave visibly rippling through the suit it was wearing. “SNIPER!” Somebody bellowed. It might have been her, but in that moment she honestly couldn’t tell. As the headless body crumpled to the ground in a fountain of red, the same gun roared out again… and again. In the distance she could see two sudden sprays of red splatter up the sides of the Militia APCs, one right after the other.

The echoes of gunfire galvanized the crowd into a further panic, a stampede of human protesters slamming into Evelra in their attempt to get away from the violence. For a moment, the marine captain thought she was going to get dragged under by the wave, but then they rolled past her, leaving her staggering into the clear. With the screaming of the crowd now behind her and her ears still ringing from gunshots it was oddly quiet once more, save for the groans of the wounded.

Not letting herself fall into the lull, Evelra kept moving forward only to nearly gag at the smell as she approached the corner of the building. Like a Blue Grail left in the summer sun for a week, the air was heavy with a putrid smoke, reminiscent of the scent of death itself. Quickly sealing her helmet, she took a shuddering breath of fresh air before looking up just in time to see a pair of the Governess’s thugs get bodily tackled into the pavement by Eleynor. The rest of treasonous Militia were either surrendering or trying to run like the Deep-Minder itself was behind them as more Marine Pods came charging around nearby street corners.

Watching the last treasonous bastards eat pavement, the marine captain strode up to the Militaman’s corpse and picked up his blood-stained rifle. Quickly turning the weapon over in her hands, Evelra took one look at its settings and nearly threw the gun away in disgust. Medium power, maximum dispersal. Against even the most basic of modern armor, such settings would be practically useless; but would make for a decent, if imprecise, fire starter. Which is exactly what they’d done. Of course, leave it to the humans to figure out how to turn the most basic of weapons into a tool of terror. She thought bitterly, adjusting the beam spread back to something more logical before strapping it’s sling to her harness.

Now properly armed for anything else the Deep-Minder might decide to throw at her, Evelra flicked open her wrist-mounted omnipad, the integrated AR display in her helmet seamlessly linking to it. A couple quick taps later and the captain had an outgoing call. As the phone line rang in her ear, she tried not to tap her foot, every second feeling like ten.

“911, what’s your emer-”

Before the woman on the other end could even finish her sentence, Evelra interrupted her. “This is Captain Evelra of the Imperial Marines, 4032nd company. We have at least a dozen, I repeat, at least a dozen critically injured burn victims at the corner of 3rd and Main. I need emergency Medivac for the critically wounded.” She barked into the mic.

There was a momentary pause on the other end accompanied by the sounds of a physical keyboard before shortly being followed by a muffled “Fuck.” Evelra shifted impatiently as one second dragged into the next. “Is something the matter?” The marine growled.

“Ahh… No ma’am.” The other woman’s voice was uncertain for a moment before steadying back out. “Just bypassing some red tape. Consider it done. ETA, ten minutes.” She said with a thermocast firmness. Evelra briefly considered hounding the woman for what exactly she meant by ‘red tape’ but decided against it. She sounded confident in her statement and ultimately there was nothing else Evelra could do about it at the moment.

“I’m going to hold you to that.” The marine captain growled before hanging up. One down. Looking up, she glanced over the growing crowd of Marines. Already, some of her girls were pulling out medkits and burn patches as they moved to help injured protesters; her AR display highlighting their ranks and names.

“Sergeant Quixana!” Evelra barked over the din.
“Ma’am!” The medic shouted back over one shoulder, barely looking up from the burn victim she was currently treating.

“We have civilian medivac for the burn victims inbound, ETA ten minutes. You have command over Triage. Anyone in critical condition they can’t airlift out is your responsibility. Clear?” She commanded, watching the Governess’s thugs like a shark as her girls disarmed and secured them. At this point, Evelra honestly didn’t expect them to try anything else; but as always with humans, one never quite knew what they’d do.

“Affirmative!” Quixana replied. Taking a moment to ensure the woman she was treating wasn’t in immediate danger, the medic ushered another marine over to help and began shouting orders of her own. Two down. Satisfied that the situation was under control, Evelra keyed into her comms again.

“Prex, Sitrep.”

A couple moments later, the other woman’s voice came to life in her earpiece. “After the gunshots went off, the little fuckers started stumbling over each other to try and surrender. What in the Deep just happened?” Despite the horror around her, Evelra gave a short, mirthless chuckle. “Seems a certain… somebody decided to more than just ‘play’ at being security. And seeing as I still have my head, they’re not a complete bloodthirsty idiot.”

“You certain it’s… them?” Prex asked, a hint of dubiousness in her voice.

“Given that there’s one of the Governess’s thugs sans their head while I still have mine? Yeah. About as certain as I can be. Fits what little we know about their M.O.” Evelra shot back.

There were several long moments of silence before her subordinate let out a low whistle. “Make that three. I’ve got two more over here. Definitely explains why the little Turoxes were so fucking panicky. What now Cap?”

“How many of your Pods do you need to secure your prisoners?” Evelra asked.

“Less than half. They’re more terrified of stepping back into the sights of that sniper than anything else, I think.” Prexith snorted, a dry hint of amusement in her voice.

“Take as many as you think you can spare from guard duty and go arrest the Governess. Alive. Though preventing her from causing any more damage takes priority. Clear?” Evelra’s voice was firm, the unspoken message clear. Try not to kill the bitch if at all possible, but ice her tits if she’s going to make this a problem.

“As a laser lens. Prex out.”

When the line clicked dead, the marine captain took a deep breath and tried to center herself. Now came the hard part.

Politics.

= = =

Evelra stopped outside the governess’ office and took a deep breath to steady herself. Within two hours of getting the fiasco under control, one Agent Lohun had arrived… along with three Pods of Death’s Head Commandos. Upon giving him her report, the petite male had thanked her and politely requested that she remain in her quarters until further notice. The marine captain had known better than to try and test those particular boundaries. It was only now, three days later, that she’d been summoned once more.

In spite of the not quite lockdown state that was currently in effect, word still traveled. Her orders to arrest the governess had been upheld and the bitch had been transferred out to some Interior facility goddess knows where. A minimal local press release had happened; condemning the governess’ actions and requesting cooperation with the authorities as they investigated the incident. Things were still tense, but the daily gathering of thousands of protesters had dwindled to a hundred or so of the most stubborn.

With a little shake to clear her head, Evelra opened the office door and stepped through. Behind the governess’ massive polished wooden desk sat Lohun. The petite male was almost comically out of place; his simple take on the Interior uniform clashing with the room’s ostentatious opulence. Rumor had it that since he was investigating the room’s previous owner, he’d simply co-opted the office rather than bother to set up another workspace elsewhere. Looking up from his omnipad and what she assumed was a proverbial mountain of reports, the Agent gave her a tired nod of acknowledgement.

“Good. You’re here. Please, take a seat Captain D’saari.” He said, gesturing to a much simpler chair in front of the desk. Wincing internally at his usage of her long-abandoned family name, Evelra complied and settled into the offered seat in silence as she tried not to look at the silent woman in the corner with the three-eyed skull mask. Lohun gave his omnipad one last glance before setting it down and letting his carefully focused gaze settle onto her.

“Six deaths.” He stated simply, letting the fact hang there in the air for a moment. “Only half of which were not the aggressors in this situation. That could have gone much, much worse. A job well done Captain.”

Evelra gave an awkward shrug. “Without the… unsolicited fire support it would have been. My girls just did the mop up.”

Lohun hummed, double-checking something on his omni-pad. “About that. The audio logs between you and your second indicated a certain familiarity with this assumed insurgent sniper, yet I can’t find any combat reports that you two share featuring any opposition with this kind of firepower. Care to explain what I’m missing here?” He asked calmly, a polite smile on his face; the Commando in the corner shifting her weight slightly.

Right. That.

A bundle of nerves did somersaults in her gut as she felt her throat go dry. “Ah, yeah. About… one local year ago we had a human male turn up dead. Clear signs of abuse. Autopsy report indicated he had both Nightfel and Viagra in him at the time of death. I had my suspicions, but the ensuing investigation never turned up any evidence.” The marine captain grimaced, scratching at one tusk with her thumbnail. “A few months later, A pod on a routine patrol got ambushed. All three of their heads were blown clean off. Big gun. I think you can guess what we found when we cleared out their belongings.”

“Nightfel and Viagra.” Lohun said cooly, his face grim.

Evelra nodded. “Yeah. The Governess covered the whole thing up in the name of keeping the peace. Released a statement that the young man’s murderers had been found and executed while redacting my report.”

Briefly adding a few notes on his omnipad, the Interior agent gave her a careful look. “Why didn’t you report this breach of protocol to the Interior?”

“Because it worked.” Evelra sighed. “Approval ratings ticked up, minor incidents went down. Didn’t hurt that I also publicly doubled down on mandatory etiquette training for my girls. I’ve seen enough of the Empire’s bureaucracy over the years to know better than to stir up the seabed over something like this. Justice was served, even if it was in a less than ideal manner.”

“And what about the young man’s family?” Lohun pressed, his gaze tightening.

Coughing slightly to clear her throat, Evelra looked away as she felt her cheeks heat up. “Officially, they were given the same story as everyone else. However, I… I may have taken one Shel to visit their home and correct that mistake. They deserved to know.” She finished quietly, leaning forward in her chair to look down at the ground. Anywhere but at the male in front of her.

After several agonizingly long moments of silence, the marine captain glanced up to catch sight of Lohun slowly starting to nod. “Good. That’s good. We can work with that.”

At his words, Evelra let out a breath she hadn’t realized she’d been holding. In response, a ghost of a smile pulled at the edges of Lohun’s face. “Yes, you can relax now. You’re here to help me fix this mess, not to have your tits burned off.”

Evelra bobbed her head, eager for the change of topic. “Gladly. What can I do?”

The ghost of a smile on Lohun’s face broadened slightly, hovering on the edge of a smirk. “Simple. You will be taking over as the Local Governess.” The marine captain felt her jaw go slack as the Interior Agent calmly continued along as if he was discussing something as simple as dinner reservations.

“Of course, there’s a plethora of steps to take along the way. In recognition of your service to the citizens of the empire, you will be promoted two ranks to Lieutenant Colonel and discharged with full honors. We’ll then need somebody to fill your current position. One Sergeant… Prexith Van’sar, your current second, should do nicely. With her service record she's certainly earned herself a commission, I think.” He scoffed in amusement, shaking his head at some distant thought. “Deep, her accolades are almost as impressive as her penchant for avoiding promotions. It’s my hope though that continuing to work with you should be enough to dissuade her of that particular tendency.”

Lohun finally took a proper pause, as if he was only now taking in her shock. “Is something the matter Captain D’saari?”

As Evelra heard him refer to her by her family name again something inside her broke. The sheer absurdity of it all was just too much, and a noise of amusement escaped her mouth. It started as a snort, before growing into a full-on barks of laughter as Evelra shook her head in disbelief. “I- I’m sorry, but you want me, the legally disowned, stiff-sprung cunt to be a local governess? Goddess, you all must be getting desperate if you’re willing to dredge up the cast-off chaff of the noble houses.”

Lohun merely quirked an eyebrow at her before briefly consulting his omnipad again. “So that explains the three separate attempts to change your last name… aannd probably why all three of them never went anywhere.” He let out a small humph as a flicker of distaste crossed his face. “An easy enough fix.”

“Goddess. You’re serious.” Evelra muttered as she slumped back in her chair, trying to process the implications. “Ok. Why me?” She asked, throwing a hand wide.

The Interior agent’s gaze focused in on her as he leaned forward onto the table, steepling his fingers. “Because Captain, over the past three days I have spent an exhaustive amount of time interviewing and interrogating people to get a better handle on what happened and why. Your name came up just as, if not, more frequently than the governess’s; and rarely in a negative light. From both Shil’vati and humans. Deep, even some of the ones that looked like they wanted to spit in my face refused to speak ill of you. Do you understand how goddess-damned rare that is?” Lohun finished, his voice raised and projected, not quite reaching an actual shout.

Evelra was sorely tempted to argue. She’d spent most of her adult life trying to get as far away from the nobility and politics as she could, as nothing good in her life had ever come from them. Then her conversation with Isaiah flashed through her mind. Fuck. The marine captain let out a disgusted groan of frustration as she rubbed her face with one hand. “Alright… but how?” She asked, her brain fervently grasping at straws. “I mean no offense, but… isn’t that a little outside your authority as an Interior Agent?..”

Once more, a slight grin pulled at the agent’s face. “Ah yes. Perhaps some reintroductions are in order. Independent Investigator Lohun Vey’elquiese of the Empress’s own and an Agent of her Interior. It’s a pleasure to make your acquaintance, Lady Evelra?..” He said smoothly, letting the end of his sentence hang as he leaned across the massive table to offer a petite fist.

Oh.

For one long moment, Evelra’s brain short-circuited. The petite little male sitting across from her answered to only perhaps a dozen people in the entire Empire, and had the authority to make individuals such as system governesses simply disappear. Of course, abuse of said power carried the death penalty, not that one of the Empress’s own handpicked agents were likely to make that kind of mistake. Suddenly, the three pods of Death’s Head Commandos accompanying him made much, much more sense.

After a couple seconds of slight panic, her brain caught back up and she processed the question he’d carefully interwoven into his reintroduction. Taking a moment to think, she settled on her answer. With a slight smile of her own, she reached out her hand to tap her knuckles to his.

“Van’sar. Evelra Van’sar. And the pleasure is all mine Investigator.”

2023.05.29 19:56 tyerap First solo trip: my impressions

I just came back from 2 weeks in San Francisco (23M from Europe). Here’s a summary of my trip.
What I liked:
What I disliked:
Overall, 2 weeks in the city was too much. 8-9 days would have been plenty enough to explore, but this extra time also allowed me a lot of reading/reflecting time, which was what I wanted. I just wish I booked 4-5 days in another city, I was getting a bit bored at the end. Or I should’ve rented a car, but was too anxious to drive alone or to have it vandalized.
Also, 2 weeks in a room with 10 other people and shared bathrooms was a lot to handle for me. I wish I booked 3-4 nights at a hotel to have a little privacy and recharge my social batteries.
A lot of lessons learned from this first trip! I’m so happy that I did it, because I know all these mistakes will only make my future trips better. Overall, it was a really cool experience. I can’t wait to go again!

2023.05.29 18:04 HeyItsBruin In Massachusetts, if someone jaywalks during the day and is hit by a car, who is at fault?

I live close to the middle of a road that goes from the highway directly onto a main street, where the speed limit drops about 40mph. There is an out-of-the-way crosswalk, so people have been known to jaywalk to the other side. I was walking with my brother and they said that in MA, if someone is hit during the daytime even if they’re jaywalking, the driver is at fault. Is this true? I tried looking for the law on Google but could only find law about jaywalking by itself. I would think the jaywalker is at fault for not being at a crosswalk but I was still curious.

Walk in, be polite, do your job, walk out, and no more.
It was the five-step mantra my feathered friend had given me to get me through the working days, and it’s served me quite well for the past couple of years. His voice was always a soothing guide, repeatedly ringing in the back of my head like a well-meaning wake-up call.
I was getting on in my years a little, at least it felt like it, so I still gladly accepted his help even after all this time. He was a polite fellow, almost as old as I was but far more able and proficient. Maybe he cared about me a little too much as he did many things for my convenience—he even got me my janitorial job in the first place—but who was I to turn away such a good friend?
I gave a satisfied tail swish as I said goodbye to Fevri, the receptionist’s lovely tone a soft farewell. The end of every shift always came with a calming walk back to my apartment building, like an extra treat for all the helpful work I’ve done. It was far enough from the office for the time to last but close enough to not be tiring, giving me a moment to appreciate the ambiance of the Capital and ‘mull things over’ as my friend would always encourage.
Well, mulling things over, almost everything was in its place. My job was still good; I was doing good. I was good!
My friend just hasn’t been visiting lately, which is fine. It’s happened a few times before, and he’s told me what to do to get through the day so many times that I know his instructions like the back of my paw.
I just hope he’s doing well too, and that he’ll be back soon to give me some medicine again to stop my recent headaches.
I didn’t know why, but recently I’ve been expecting something to happen to me. Something bad or good, I didn’t know. But this sort of feeling and the headaches always came up when I didn’t take my medicine.
My friend’s voice softly chided me, his advice echoing from the past. “Remember, Havan: you can’t get the medicine from any other doctor. You’ll get hurt and taken away from your home.”
The air was colder today. Strangely, I knew that for whatever reason it wasn’t why I felt a shiver go through me. I had no reason to be afraid, I was good! Always good!
I walked through the apartment building’s front door and swiftly made my way to my own unit. Before, it was much easier to push that feeling of—fear?—aside. Maybe something bad is coming this way.
Right to my doorstep.
I hurriedly locked the door behind me.
I shed my jumpsuit and tool belt, setting them aside on a rack. The jumpsuit wasn’t particularly dirty—for now, at least—so I could just have it washed some other time. My friend would understand. He always did. I just hope he’ll be back soon with more of my medicine. I don’t want to be bad.
After a small meal, it was time for bed. I couldn’t eat more as the headache was getting worse by the minute, ending my appetite.
My paws placed themselves over my forehead like useless cushions. The worst was yet to come; the bad dreams would arrive the moment I fell asleep. Sometimes, even the medicine wasn’t enough to stop them from invading my head like a predator on the hunt.
They were mostly the same. A woman and her child: a dream repeated forever like the infinity of space.
For some reason, I felt like I should know them.
Whenever I tried to look at their faces, I could feel something rip my gaze away with claw and fanged force—when I could see them at the edges of my eyes, their empty faces were nothing but smudged paint on a watery canvas. Just out of reach, an orange-eyed predator snarled behind them.
It always scared me.
I’ve tried talking to my friend about it many times, but he never wanted to hear it. He’d look away and tell me to let it go, just take the medicine and forget the nightmares.
He was like me in the dream.
I hope he’ll be back soon.
Sometimes, he’d look ready to tell me something—staring straight at me mid-conversation. Then, he’d just look away all tired and heavy, deflating like someone had given him a weight to carry. He’d usually take his leave whenever those moments happened: “Farewell, Havan. See you next time.”
Now that I think about it, he also looked like that whenever I told him about the dream. Maybe he wished he could know them too.

JULY 11, 2136
I’m losing track, I think. I’m not sure. I’ve got a slow-burning headache that just won’t leave, simmering every part of my mind it could get its claws on. I can barely keep myself upright most of the time; I had to call in sick yesterday. My friend’s still not back with more medicine.
Medicine for what; I didn’t even know anymore.
Wake up.
Shit… d-dammit,” I managed to croak out before hurling the rest of my lunch into the toilet. The act of cursing was paradoxically unknown yet familiar to my tongue—like an old routine left untouched for years.
All my dreams were relentless and mocking—I was rendered helpless to their onslaught. I couldn’t tell what was real and what was cruel imagination. In fact, the only things that felt real were the solid and smooth toilet and the force of my vomiting. I held on for dear life to save myself from the vortex churning around me.
A singular thought beckoned me again, a glaring beacon in a foggy sea of pain: ‘Wake up.’
There was nothing else to wake up to.
“DAMMIT!” I repeated before unceremoniously slumping back onto the floor. Something within me was changing—rapidly and viscerally. I was a stranger in my own body, adrift in a world far removed from the one I knew. I couldn’t breathe.
Someone was knocking on my door, calling my name.
I dragged myself out of the bathroom, feverish and frail, ignoring that weak voice in my head that asked: ‘What if it wasn’t your friend?’
I needed anything. Anything at all.
My body moved on its own, paws desperately reaching the doorknob. Somehow, I managed to unlock the door. It wasn’t my friend.
I would’ve screamed if I had the strength left for it. Instead, my legs gave way; my back eagerly greeted its old friend: the floor. Dragging myself backward with my vision blurred and hearing muted, the stranger came inside—crossing the threshold that marked my safety from the things my friend warned me about.
“Please… don’t hurt me…”
But the stranger marched on, grabbing ahold of me.
I curled into a pathetic shield, attempting to cover as much of myself as possible. Somehow, it all still felt like I was falling.
Through the blur, I heard the stranger’s voice. “Havan! It’s just me!”
Fevri?
The realization was a bullet through the skull, rattling my brain into something like focus. There it was: the receptionist’s young and frightened face. Lying in the hallway beyond the open door was a basket full of goods that were probably meant for me.
Whoops.
“Let’s get you lying down somewhere comfortable, okay? You need to rest. I’ll call a doctor—”
My head snapped back up. “No! Y-you shouldn’t! You can’t!”
“O-okay! Okay. No doctors. I’m sorry,” she reassuringly patted my shoulders after having dragged me to the side of my couch. “Look, forget that I ever mentioned it. Now, I need to pull you up onto the couch; is that fine with you?”
I limply nodded. I probably didn’t have the strength to do something as simple as that by myself.
Fevri pulled me up while that all too familiar voice in the back of my head spoke again: ‘She better keep her word, or I’ll…’

I didn’t finish that thought. What the hell was that all about? I wasn’t a violent man.
Was I? I can’t even recall who I am anymore. The vortex of dreams overtook me again, Fevri’s voice fading away as she momentarily left my side to grab the basket outside.
I was alone once again.
A predator’s face revealed itself in the blood-orange veil of my brain, sneering as it revealed itself to be the beckoning voice echoing through my skull.
‘WAKE UP.’
I fell.
I don’t know what it would mean if I’ll ‘wake up.’ Powerless, I lost myself to a seemingly infinite and dark slumber.

JULY 12, 2136
I arrived at the light at the end of the tunnel, the bottom of the bottomless pit.
My eyes opened, and a strange sense of peace washed over me. Coming from the television were alarm clock tones, an emergency broadcast stuck on the screen. ‘Predator arrival,’ ‘evacuate,’ and ‘await further instructions’ were the only phrases I took note of before rising from the couch.
This wasn’t my home.
The window blinds were closed throughout my apartment. Outside, the city was deathly silent. I didn’t need to look to know that there were likely a few bodies lying face-down on the street, casualties of panicked stampedes to the bunkers.
What happened to me?
Decades of half-remembered memories flooded outward, smashing through the dam of my mind. To my horror, I realized this was the first time I’d felt my heartbeat in a long, long while.
My Krakotl ‘friend’ was an exterminator; he always wore his uniform whenever he visited me. The medication was for predator disease.
I’m not ‘Havan.’ I didn’t use to be, and I couldn’t remember my real name.
The woman and child in my dreams were my wife and son—
With no other outlet for my frightened rage, I resorted to slamming my foot into the side of an empty trash can.
I gritted my teeth as pain shot up through my leg. For the first time, I felt the stiffness and aching that came with being middle-aged and taking those damn predator disease pills for years. Twenty years. I’d been out of it for twenty fucking miserable years.
A small part of me wished I stayed ‘asleep.’ I cast the thought aside almost immediately.
The exterminator had never given his name. How convenient. I had nowhere to go.
I should be weeping.
My head turned towards the bedroom door as Fevri walked out, clearly having just woken up. “W-what’s going on? What was that noise? Oh, Havan, you’re awake!”
“Nothing,” I winced, forcing the scowl off my face. “I just… accidentally knocked a trash can over. I should be the one asking you what’s going on.”
Fevri shook her head, trying to focus through her drowsiness. “Uhm, alarms started ringing out through the city, and that emergency broadcast said it was predators. N-nothing’s happened, though. It’s been about an hour and a half since it started, but it’s been so quiet.”
“You stayed.”
That seemed to wake her up. “I couldn’t leave you—you could’ve gotten hurt if something did happen! I… I couldn’t ask for help bringing you to the nearest shelter—everyone else was too busy trying to get themselves into safety.”
“Thank you.” I didn’t know what else to say to that. I sat back down on the couch, rubbing my paws across my face as I mulled over everything.
I bet my past self had never felt as lost as I did at this moment. All I could feel was the weight of my newfound clarity and my current confusion—a balancing act of anguish and pain.
“Is something wrong, Havan? Don’t worry about the predator raid; if nothing’s happened so far then we’re probably safe and sound.”
“No, it’s…”
I paused myself. Did I actually want to tell Fevri everything? She was only an acquaintance from work.
But she did stick around and help me. That said a lot about the kind of person she is.
Call it foolishness, call it loneliness—I told the truth, recounting everything I could to her. Right now, she was the only friend I had. She was horrified, of course, but surprisingly it was directed to my circumstances rather than myself.
Fevri sat down beside me, placing a sympathetic paw on my shoulder. “I know it isn’t much, but… I’m really sorry. I thought—we all thought…”
“Thought what?”
“Well, we always had a feeling that you had some form of predator disease. You were amicable, sure, but you were always… distant? Plus, you never talked about your family and always dodged questions about them. We all thought you lost them to a raid and it just made sense to us.”
She nervously flicked her tail. “Guess we weren’t entirely wrong, in a messed up way. Sorry, I shouldn’t have said that.”
I sighed, flicking my ears dismissively to show I wasn’t offended. Everything else about me would always be worse by comparison, a pillar of distress as strong as an Arxur’s jaw and equally as biting.
What else can I do now? I have no leads. All I had were blurry faces and names I didn’t know.

Why’d he stop?
It made no sense for my ‘friend’ to suddenly stop medicating me for weeks. The fact that he had consistent access to medication to give me made me suspect that he was an exterminator-specialist, which would also make him a doctor specializing in treating predator-diseased individuals like me.
In fact, none of what he did made any sense at all. Why go through the effort of giving me a false name—to give me instructions on how to live by myself and dodge questions?
He had been trying to protect me. Was it a fucked up way of doing it? Absolutely, but it didn’t change the fact that he actually helped. For all I knew, he was the one thing stopping me from finding a new home in a correctional facility.
My tail twitched with irritation. Fevri looked expectantly at me. “What now?”
“I don’t know. I guess looking for the exterminator to get some answers would be my safest bet, but I’m not walking to the nearest guild office or the damn headquarters to ask for him.”
“Maybe I can? After the lockdown, anyway.”
“I don’t know. Honestly, this sounds like a stupid idea,” I shook my head, another sigh escaping from my lips. “Hell, I’m lucky you still want to help me for some damn reason I can’t think of.”
To my surprise, she let out an amused snort. “It’s the right thing to do?”
“I’m predator-diseased. Probably dangerous in some way.”
“Well, you won’t hurt me, will you? Besides, you look like you really need the help.”
She didn’t get my point, but fine. I guess that answer was enough for now.
Fevri must’ve noticed my reluctance, making her continue. “Look, you don’t seem to be a bad man. Just… someone caught up in something really horrible. Everyone back in the office—myself included—liked you and felt sorry for you, you know? That hasn’t changed with me, at least.”
“Alright, alright,” I stood up from the couch, giving in to the receptionist’s offer. There was something else that made her want to stick around; I wasn’t an idiot.
For now? I couldn’t doubt her. She’s my only real friend; anything is better than being alone.
“I’m gonna clean up.”
She gave a nod of acknowledgment as I entered the bathroom and locked the door behind me. I stared at the unfamiliar visage in the mirror, examining every little line and nick that marked my face. The graying Venlil in front of me was someone else entirely.
I was old. I was exhausted. I was likely insane—but I was awake.
My true trial is just beyond the walls of my apartment building once the lockdown ends. The past twenty years of being lost and asleep had only served as a prologue to a nightmare.
The worst was yet to come.

Becca invited me to her apartment when we made it back, sent me through the alley behind the building to keep the prying eyes at the minimum. That was fine with me as I was a lot more noticeable than I liked to be, at the moment. I had already lit a cigarette by the time she opened the back door of the stairwell to let me in. It was the last in the pack, and I'd only opened it this morning. The temperature on my phone screen had finally hit zero.
"You're gonna have to give me a second, B, I don't wanna smoke around you in your condition but I really need one."
She gave me another watery grin.
"Little too much blood in the nicotine system, huh?"
"Exactly, my young friend, exactly that."
She propped the door open and sat herself down on the ground. I could tell the high heels were starting to hurt her because she kicked them off and set them neatly to the side, though I knew the concrete had to be freezing her feet off. She tucked her skirt between her legs and sat with her back against the wall, her elbow propped on her bent knee, the other leg stretched out straight before her. It was exactly how what was left of Antoni had been sitting beside me less than two hours ago.
I was getting a little tired of all the patterns appearing in my life these days.
I flipped to my news app, as was my habit. There was an article at the top of page about the preparations the SDNY were making to get ready for the coming storm, but frankly I didn't really give a fuck so I just kept scrolling.
"Your old neighborhood is in the news, B."
"You ain't had enough bad news?" Beccs asked with a rueful laugh.
"Eh, I like to stay abreast of current events. I mean, you got me pegged, B. I'm a nosy fuck. But, uh, fifteen years on the inside, you learn that it pays to pay attention to the shit other people don't notice, cause you never know when the information you pick up is going to end up being the information you need."
She gave me a look that said she had to yield to my point.
"So what's the news from Koreatown?".
"Somebody shot a wedding up, apparently. Says seven were killed, including the bride and groom and the bride's father, as they was leaving the reception. You know, most of these names are Rhees. Ain't nobody you know, is it? Kinda feel like you've had enough death for the day, kid."
There was another look on her face, one I couldn't quite read even with all my people-watching prowess.
"Lemme take a wild stab at it. Two of those names are Rhee Seong-Min and Rhee Bong-Cha."
"Yeah," I nodded. "You do know 'em. I'm sorry, B."
She gave a low, almost rumbling, chuckle. It gave me a little shiver, not from the cold, and not one of enjoyment, either. She flashed a sign, one I'd seen her flash before, but it wasn't from any gang I knew personally, and lacking any official affiliation of my own, I'd dealt with my fair share of different gang members in the Upstate Correctional Facility. Double E's, one backwards, one forwards, three quick shakes of each hand.
"God bless old K-town. But you ain't got to worry about it. I'll not shed a tear over any of them. They's family, but they ain't exactly family, you know. I might tell you about it one day."
The last sentence had a note of finality to it, so I didn't ask any further questions in that regard, but I was still as curious as always.
"If all your family has Korean names, how the hell did you end up as Rebecca and your Dad as Sam?"
"My Dad's name is Park Kyung-Sam. Just Sam was easier to tell people and he, uh, he wanted me to have the same benefit of blending in in American society, and he liked the name Rebecca. So, Rhee Rebecca Hyo-Jin. My Mom's name was Rhee Chung-Cha, but everybody just called her ChaCha, like from Grease."
"So your Mom was the Rhee?"
She made an affirmative noise and nodded.
"She didn't exactly wanna give up her family name, and… my Dad didn't exactly give a fuck cause he was in love with her crazy ass. You know, that's where I get this from. Except my Moms, if she was still around she'd make me look like I grew up to be a calm, quiet girl."
I'd hate to see what was worse than Beccs.
"You done?" Becca asked. I nodded, tossed my cigarette into the sand-filled bucket we kept here for just that purpose. I followed B inside and we climbed the stairs to the third floor. I leaned against the wall as she pulled a ring of keys from her coat pocket and waited while she unlocked the knob and the three deadbolts on her door.
"Pretty serious about your home security, B?"
She shot me a look but didn't say anything as she opened the door. A steady beeping greeted us, and Becca stopped just inside and punched in a code on a security panel. As I stepped around her and entered the apartment, I understood why.
Do you know that part in Coming To America where Akeem comes home to his dilapidated Queens apartment and realizes Semmi has filled it with expensive furniture? Well, it was exactly like that. Becca locked the door back behind her, threw her stilettos onto the shoe rack, and hung her coat on the brass tree beside it. I did the same, removed my boots to place them on the rack as well.
"Jesus Christ, B, this place looks amazing."
There was a gray suede sectional in the center of the living room, a 152 inch Panasonic plasma bolted to the wall. The coffee table, the wool Oriental rug beneath it, and the end tables looked antique, as well as the green velvet chaise set near one window. There were three ornately-carved bookcases set against the far wall between the two windows facing the street, one filled with DVDs, and on the other two almost all the books were old and leather bound. The kitchen was open to the room, separated by a butcher block bar from the living room, all matching stainless steel appliances and black marble countertops. All along the walls were family pictures dotted between massive paintings held in golden Baroque style frames.
They were… stunning was the only word I could think to describe them. Most of them were portraits done in a slightly impressionist style, impasto if my memory served me, seemingly random strokes of thick paint that somehow managed to form the perfect images of faces and a few nudes.
"Jesus Christ, these paintings must have cost a fortune alone."
Becca stepped beside me, her arms crossed over her chest as she surveyed the painting I was looking at. It was done in mostly black and red, the image of a sleeping nude man, one arm tucked behind his head, his other draped across his stomach, his hips and legs covered with a sheet. If I touched it, I could have felt the wrinkles in the bunched fabric. There was something oddly familiar about it.
"They didn't cost shit," she answered.
That made me look away from the painting and back to Beccs.
"What the hell? Did you rob a gallery?"
"No, you mook, I painted them. They didn't cost anything but the price of the canvas and the paint, which, you know, I stole most of that from school."
"You painted them," I repeated, looking back.
As I looked closer at the canvas, I realized why it was familiar. The sleeping man was our dear friend Antoni Zabrowska. I had mistaken his tattoos for shadows, though I had to admit I had never seen him look quite so relaxed. As I glanced around the room, I realized I recognized many of the paintings. I was able to pick out her father's face, Rossi's, and I realized the model for the two female nudes was none other than Nia Bianchi. There was one of a woman in white with bloody skeletal wings that bore a strong resemblance to Becca and I imagined that was the infamous ChaCha.
"That's what I go to Columbia for. Visual Arts."
"You're a goddamn genius, B."
She scoffed.
"No, I'm fucking serious, kid. My sister collects art, and she refuses to go for the big names. Shit like this, she pays 10 to 20 grand for a painting half this size, more if it's one of the artists she likes."
Now she snorted.
"What? Your sister got a money tree?"
"No, my older sister Aurie's a writer. She wrote her first book when she was ten. She's published 20 so far, but she's got 30 or 40 more in backlog that she's still tweaking. She's kind of a perfectionist when it comes to writing, but I guess it pays off. Her books sell like fucking hotcakes everytime she puts one out, two of her series got picked up by Netflix, and Lion's Gate turned her seventh book into a movie. She even got to be involved in the productions.
"She's got a penthouse on the Upper East Side that she bought about six years ago. That's where I lived when I got out of the Upstate. Aurora, she's a fucking Saint, you know. I mean, I had a shitty PO that was up my ass every five minutes but Aurie never said a word about it. She just… always told me she was glad I was home, which, you know, was nice to hear considering that according to my grandparents I died 19 years ago. She was the one that helped me get this place down here, paid in full for a two year lease."
Becca raised an eyebrow at me.
"No offense, Tony, I can tell you're crazy about her, but she couldn't have picked a better place for you than this hell hole?"
I laughed as softly as I could, to save the muscles in my stomach.
"I picked this place myself, B. Cheapest apartment I could find in any of the boroughs, and it even had three bedrooms. I was thinking about having space for a library and a home gym."
Becca snorted.
"Yeah, it's cheap cause the fucking place is about 90 years old. Nobody's been able to get a hold of the slumlord who owns it for repairs in 8 months, but I bet you the motherfucker still collects the rent checks we deposit in his fucking bank account every month."
"Yeah, I figured that out just about as soon as I moved in, but beggars can't be choosers. Besides, Antoni always used to help me out whenever something broke."
Becca gave a small smile.
"They did that for everybody. I used to call them the apartment elves, cause instead of making shoes they were skittering around fixing fucking toilets and sinks, and rewiring burned up outlets and bringing in new refrigerators and stoves when shit broke in everybody else's places. And they bought it all with their own money. Everybody tried to pay them, but they never took a dime for any of it. Ironically enough, Pops used to talk about Antoni all the time because of all the money he'd spend over there every week. Said he had a good heart, just no good sense when it came to what was his responsibility and wasn't. You know, I had my own opinions about Antoni's heart, but I kept them to myself."
"I really wish I had paid more attention when Antoni was working on the boiler, though. Instead of just passing him tools and running my mouth."
"Yeah, you're good at that," she replied with a smirk.
"And fuck you, too, Miss Rebecca. You might be the strong type, but you're not exactly silent yourself."
She laughed.
"Make yourself comfortable. I'll be right back."
I nodded and obeyed as she exited into what I saw was the bathroom as she opened the door and closed it behind her.
The sectional was goddamned heaven, and she'd said make myself comfortable so I kicked out the recliner and leaned back. I closed my eyes for a moment and sighed, and when I opened them I nearly jumped out of my skin. I barely managed to stop myself from letting out a yell as I jerked back up to sitting.
Antoni's corpse was standing by the picture wall, looking intently at a photo of a child Becca wearing a ruffled, cream colored dress with a ribbon in her long black hair. It was the picture of her first Communion.
"Goddamn, you can't give somebody a warning before you do that?"
He neither answered me nor turned to look at me because he was using the stumps of his wrists to adjust several of the frames back straight again.
"Fucking neat freak," I laughed. "She wasn't lying."
He finally turned toward me.
You ever seen a corpse try to look annoyed when he's missing about a quarter of his face? I mean, what am I saying, you probably haven't, but suffice to say, it's pretty fucking funny. He raised his left wrist, and if he had hands, he'dve been shooting the bird.
Almost hysterical laughter burst out of me as Becca exited the bathroom.
"Least the pipes ain't frozen yet," she muttered.
She gave me a strange look.
"Who are you talking to out here? And what's so funny?"
I glanced back to Antoni, but he was gone again.
"Don't mind me, B, I'm pretty sure I got a concussion. I'm pretty much seeing pink elephants at this point." Or, you know, the mutilated corpse of my best friend, but it's probably best I leave it at elephants.
"Yeah," she answered, and crossed the room to hand me something. "Speaking of."
It was a mouth guard.
"What is this for?"
She didn't answer me, but headed to the kitchen and opened a cabinet, withdrawing a cut crystal scotch glass and then opening the refrigerator and withdrawing… two bags of blood. Nia's blood, to be exact. She unscrewed the cap at the bottom of one, punctured the seal with a fresh insulin needle, and to my supreme discomfort squeezed some into the glass. The mouth guard suddenly made sense. It was so I wouldn't break my teeth or bite my tongue off when the convulsions started and my jaw locked down from consuming demon blood.
"Oh no, B, I don't want that."
"Yeah. That's why I didn't tell you why I wanted you over here, cause I knew you was gonna be a pussy about it."
I tried one more last-ditch effort.
"You need that more than me, B."
"I can just take my next dose early, but you, you can't go down and see Ma looking like that. She's gonna ask too many questions."
That one stopped me.
"I've had enough of interrogations for one day, B."
"There ain't no interrogation when it comes to Ma. She just puts it in your head that you ain't got no choice but to tell her the truth, and you do. She's made state witnesses get up on the stand and confess their own crimes, pleading the fifth be damned."
She screwed the cap back onto the bag and carried them and the glass over to the coffee table and set them down. She walked over and opened a closet door, pulling out an IV pole with a little box attached to it, and grabbed a small cardboard box from off a shelf and what looked like a tackle box. She set it on the coffee table after she pulled the pole over to the sectional and plugged it into the wall, opened the cardboard box and removed a cassette from inside and inserted it into the box on the pole.
"What's that?"
"It's a blood warmer for rapid transfusions, so I don't go into hypothermia or hemolysis. Little bastard cost 137 thousand, but at least you can buy them online. You put a fresh cassette in every time, the blood runs through it, by the time it gets to my arm it's body temp."
She opened the tackle box and removed two fresh lines, attaching one to the bottom of the warmer and one to the top, hanging the bags of blood but not connecting the first of them yet. The top had a drip chamber with a filter, and the bottom held the flow regulator and the hypodermic needle with the cannula inside.
"You know, it's not fucking fair, B, you shouldn't have dealt with half the shit in your life that you have."
She snorted and her lips pursed with anger as she sat down beside me.
"You sound like Rossi with that shit. That's why he wouldn't let me die, said it wasn't fair. I was ready to go into hospice, fuck it, I was ready to see my Mom again. But I'll tell you the same thing I told his stupid old ass. Life ain't fair. Cause if it was I'd have my mother and my baby's father and Jimmy's ass would be the one laying in the morgue. You think it's fair you almost lost a finger because of what he ordered?"
I laughed.
"No, I actually think that's pretty fair. That's karma, B. I was usually the one doing the beating. How do you think I ended up in prison?"
She looked hard at me for a moment.
"I mean, you never told me. You were pretty open about having gone to prison, but you never said why."
"Well, I learned to be open about it. Some people get real upset when they find out they're dealing with someone who's been through the system, so I didn't really wanna go through that again. So now I just tell people up front, let them decide for themselves if they wanna deal with me or not. That way they can't throw it back in my face, say I lied to them."
Becca let out a bitter chuckle.
"So what's your story?"
"Well, we still ain't finished your story, yet, but we'll take a detour. The whole thing started my Senior year of high school. First game of the year, I blew my knee out, big as a bitch, tore everything there was to tear, shit was basically hanging on by the skin alone. Orthopedics said I had two choices, keep playing football or, retain the ability to walk on that leg, so… there went all my big dreams of college ball and making it onto the Giants."
"Linebacker?"
I nodded. "Middle linebacker. I was good at it. 6'7, 265 pounds but light on my feet, all muscle. Back then I was running 7 percent body fat, and wasn't even trying. Shit just… all came natural to me. It all blew up in my face. Shitloads of surgery and physical therapy, and then one day the pain pills stopped but the pain didn't. Everyday, every night, I was still hurting."
She nodded.
"I know about bone pain. I could always tell when I needed to up the dose when my bones started hurting. When I started out all it took was an insulin needle. Now I take so much, I'm not even sure I qualify as human. But I guess I won't be much longer. That's always been the plan. Just keep me alive till 30 and Ma's gonna make me like her. That's the preferred age for the Entrance, something to do with the Trinity."
I nodded.
"I started asking around school if anyone knew where to get some Percs but pain management keeps that shit so tight I could only get a few at a time. Not only was they expensive, it wasn't enough. I got hooked up with this kid named Alessandro, he told me if I really wanted to control the pain, he could get me something better and cheaper. He took me to meet his uncle, Colombian guy named Marco. First shot is free and it was… it was beautiful. Everybody always gets sick the first time, but I didn't. And then after that, all my free money from my after school job started going to horse, and uh, I got my last six months off school. I already had all the credits I needed from AP classes, started working full time. They didn't piss test. But, my tolerance was rising faster than my income was."
I took a deep breath.
"I'd been buying enough that Marco was offering me fronts but I never took it. So next time I went, I asked him for my usual and I asked how much it would be for two O's on the front, cause I knew a lot of other users and I was thinking of starting to sell myself. So, he told me he'd give me a pound, and we could settle up at the end of the month."
"Jesus Christ, if you were selling a pound a month you must have been making bank."
I shook my head.
"I wasn't in it for the money. I was in it to keep myself supplied. If I kept my prices right, I could use for free, and I had enough left over to pay my portion of the rent and help pay for the groceries. I got good at it, I'd take a shot, and nod out for a few minutes, then get up and start walking the streets."
Becca snorted.
"You wasn't standing on a street corner?"
"Fuck no. Too visible. I did all my business by phone. I had a burner and gave everyone the number, and when they needed some they'd give me a call and I'd meet them or they'd meet me. I had ethics. I used to have people offering me fucking blowjobs for a bag, but I always said no, shit felt wrong. All they had to do was pay me by the end of the month but, sometimes…"
She gave a grin.
"But sometimes, 'Bitch, where's my money?'"
"Yeah, sometimes people would try to skip out, so I had to apply a little pressure to persuade them to pay. I never killed nobody, it's hard as hell to get money out of a dead man. But, black a few eyes and break a few bones and suddenly they had money they didn't before. Being my size, there wasn't many of them that could fight back. But, I fucked up the wrong lowlife.
"There was this prick, he'd been dodging me for weeks. He owed me like two grand, I'd given him that much because I knew he had money, so when I finally caught up to him, I was pretty mad and, the bitch, he told me he wasn't going to pay me. Thought he was better than me, thought he could fuck me and get away with it. So I beat the mortal hell out of him, took his wallet. He had five grand in there but I figured, 3K surcharge for wasting my time."
I shook my head.
"But I should have done some better research on who I was going after. Turned out the little prick had a socialite for a mother and his Daddy was a hedge fund manager and… I'd hurt him pretty bad. First three months, not only was I dealing with DTs, I was waiting to see if they were going to add Murder to my charges. He was in a coma for that long, and when he woke up, he had to learn to walk again, how to feed himself. I beat him so bad I gave him brain damage."
"Goddamn, Tony."
"Apparently his parents knew their son's habits and knew exactly who I was, cause they went straight to the police, and two days later SWAT showed up, turned the house upside down. I smashed my phone into pieces, flushed it so they couldn't get my contacts, but I didn't think about the fact I still had the wallet with his driver's license in it. My grandparents disowned me, right then and there. I had just reupped so they caught me with 14 ounces, all it takes is 8 for Class A felony possession. I spent 13 months in Rikers, but my sister got me a good lawyer, he knew the judge and the prosecutor personally, golfed with them, so he got me a plea deal. I was looking at life in prison, but he argued that I was a good student that had made a bad mistake because of a chronic pain issue, and they were both first offenses, so if I pled guilty, agreed to go through a substance abuse program and anger management, then they'd give me the minimum sentence.
"15 years, Class A Felony Drug Possession, 3 years, Class B felony First Degree Assault, intentionally causing grievous bodily harm while in the commission of another felony. But, at my sentencing, the judge said I was a big guy, with a big anger problem. I hadn't killed anyone, but it wasn't for lack of trying. Said I was a danger to society, so when I got to the UCF, they put me in dark red."
"Supermax?"
I nodded.
"23 hours a day in a box by myself, no visitors, barely saw the guards. But, I stayed quiet, made no problems. Prison was overcrowded so I ended up with a cellmate, and I was glad to see him. It could have been Hannibal Lecter and I would have gave him a hug. He might have been a murderer but he was actually a decent guy. Him and his crew had knocked over some jewelry stores in Manhattan, last job went bad. He'd killed three cops, so he wasn't never getting out. Neither was his wife. Life in Bedford Hills."
"That's where they was gonna send me if Ma hadn't got the jury to give me a Not Guilty verdict."
I knew Becca had a tendency to get in trouble because beside the cheerleading pictures in the bodega, there was also a mugshot.
"What did you do?"
She gave a bitter chuckle again.
"Unlike you, I killed someone. 2021, this fucking crackhead tried to rob the store. He shot the customer that was in there, old guy named Mickey, killed him. He used to live in your apartment. Tried to shoot me, too, but the gun jammed and I had the aluminum baseball bat under the counter. I just started swinging. He went down, but I jumped the counter, and hit him again. Blood lust is a real thing. Once I saw he was bleeding, I wanted to see more. I beat his brains out, literally, he was dead long before the cops ever got there. Bat looked like a toothpick when I was done.
"They arrested me, and the DA himself showed up at my arraignment. Said self defense didn't apply, sent me straight up to Murder 2, requested I be denied bail because I had a passport and plenty of money so I was a flight risk. But we all knew the truth. He was still pissed that he hadn't been able to send Rossi away for longer, and I was the next best thing. Ma had to pull a lot of strings to make sure I still got my transfusions when I was in lockup. I was in Rikers for four months, had my eighteenth birthday sitting in the Singer Unit."
"Goddamned patterns," I muttered, then raised my voice again. "You, me, and Antoni all got that in common, except he wasn't like us. He was already in prison. That's what the rose meant, turned eighteen in prison. Life sentence, triple murder."
"He told you that?" She looked betrayed, so I was quick to answer.
"No, the tattoos told me that. Google is my best friend, B. That's what the skull and crossbones, and the coffins on his arm meant."
She swallowed, and nodded again.
"But, I moved down," I continued. "Went to orange when they moved me to Gen Pop, and I had friends waiting for me. Marco was very appreciative of me keeping quiet about my source at trial, so outside Abuela Bogota's was where I hung out the most. But I had friends all over. My sister was smart. She always put way more in my account than I could spend, so whenever I heard that somebody needed something, I'd go to the canteen and buy it myself and pass it to 'em. Nobody had to owe me shit. All I wanted was to be left alone, so I had people watching my back from all sides. I ended up in blue, got moved to the dormitory, started working in the kitchen, ended up running it, cause I was a 'model prisoner.'"
"You ever fool around with any of your cellmates?" Becca asked with a grin. "Cause I did."
I gave an uncomfortable laugh.
"I mean, yeah. 15 years is a long time to be alone. I don't consider myself bisexual even, but if somebody offers, you know…" I shrugged.
"I think the word you're looking for is heteroflexible. That's how Antoni referred to himself. He had a thing for you, you know."
That stopped me dead.
"You're fucking with me, B."
"Nope. He asked me once if I'd mind if he ever got the chance to hook up with you, and I told him no, as long as he didn't mind I still hooked up with my old girlfriends from high school. But he never asked you, said he loved you too much, was afraid of ruining your friendship."
"Jesus Christ," I shook my head, finally decided I needed time to process that, and moved on. "But, my last year there, Covid hit, and, I volunteered to work in the infirmary, but pretty soon the infirmary was filled, they started keeping people in the hallway, and finally they just ended up leaving them in their beds, I was all over the place. People dropping like flies. Everytime someone coughed or sneezed, everbody'd get nervous. I been smoking since I was 16, so I cough my lungs out every morning.
"People was looking at me like I was Death Incarnate. But I never caught it, not even once. And I was all around the sick, I was taking the bodies out to the truck outside the gate. Could've run but I didn't. Only had a few years left. It worked in my favor. They cut the last three years off my sentence, put me on supervised release and now, here I am, 36 years old, and just starting my adult life."
"Rossi got let out of lockup right before lockdown, poor bastard. Me, him, and my Dad all quarantined at Ma's, but of course, you know, me and Dad was essential workers so at least I got to get out of the house everyday. I graduated early, at 16, been working seven days a week since."
I glanced at the glass on the table.
"So let's get back to your story."
She shook her head, lips pursed again.
"Uh-uh, you're not wasting anymore time. Take the blood, but first," she reached out, quicker than I could even register, and used her thumbs to set my broken nose back straight.
I let out a yell, momentarily unable to see as my eyes filled with tears.
"Jesus wept, Becca, fucking hell, goddamn."
"Sorry. It would've hurt more if you'd known it was coming. Besides, you're a good looking guy, Tony, you don't wanna ruin your face."
"Thanks, B," I muttered as I pressed the toilet paper back to my freshly bleeding nose, tears streaming down my cheeks. "Need a haircut though."
"Nah, you oughta keep it. It's very The Dark Knight Joker, just black, not blonde and green."
I laughed quietly.
"Not sure that's the best association, B. A little too psychotic and violent."
She raised an eyebrow at me.
"Alright, alright. It's probably an accurate association, just a little less arson and murder." I sighed and looked at the scotch glass. "So how do I do this, B?"
"Think about it like a tequila shot. Take the shot and then slip the guard in quick. Then sit back, try to relax."
I nodded and grabbed the glass before I lost my nerve. I raised it in her direction.
"Saluti."
"Geonbae." She responded.
