Simple things like stringing coloured lanterns between trees can have a big impact. Use a combination of twinkly lights and lanterns. To form a wall of twinkly lights, erect two posts and string cascading lights between the two poles in horizontal rows. Or hang your string of fairy lights in vertical rows from a high tree branch. For outdoor stair areas, place battery-operated candles inside transparent paper bags or place tea lights in jars, one or two on each step. Tea lights can also be placed in jars and hung from tree branches creating a wonderful atmosphere

Respect Juggernaut

This won’t hurt me! Nothing can!
♫Theme
Cain Marko was the son of nuclear scientist Kurt Marko, who worked in Alamogordo, New Mexico with Brian Xavier. After Brian died in a lab accident, Kurt married Brian’s widow Sharon for her family’s money, resulting in Cain becoming the stepbrother of the Xavier’s son Charles, the eventual founder of the X-Men. Kurt proved to be an abusive father to both Cain and Charles, which combined with Cain’s jealousy over his brother’s telepathy, fostered a lasting resentment between the two of them. After Kurt died saving them from another lab accident, Charles and Cain would end up serving with the army together in Korea. During their service, Cain would stumble across a cave that had a temple dedicated to the powerful mystic being known as Cyttorak. Touching a crimson gem at the heart of the temple, Cain was transformed into Cyttorak’s avatar on Earth, an unstoppable human Juggernaut. Shortly after, the cave collapsed, with Xavier barely managing to escape. Years later Cain would dig his way out and seek revenge on Charles for the perceived slights he had inflicted upon him. In doing so, Cain would come into conflict with the X-Men, Hulk, Spider-Man, Thor, Doctor Strange, and many other superheroes before eventually burying the hatchet with his brother. However, despite joining the X-Men and later Thunderbolts, Cain would return to being a villain each time. Throughout his life and various goals and motivations, only one constant has remained for Cain Marko. No matter the obstacle, he will never stop.

Once upon a time, there was a man. A man who got everything he wanted. In the end it wasn’t enough. In truth, it could never be enough. No amount of power could change who he was. It could never quench his thirst for power. He was now and forever the Juggernaut. And he would never stop.

2023.06.01 05:16 Top-Book6183 Sharing your location - what gets you the most milage?

We go live next week and are down to working out some pretty granular operational details. Tonight's problem-solving session will be focused on coming up with a simple yet effective way of sharing our location electronically (i.e. "online"). This could, and most likely does, mean on our top Social Media platforms (Insta, FB and Twitter) as well as the website/online menu & ordering page. I also have some other thoughts about possibly extending it into some other local online resources (for example the 'Where's My Food Truck?' FB group).
The solution can be complex asf behind the scenes as we have a very capable technical resource at our disposal, BUT it HAS TA HAS T'HAS-HAS-HAAAAAS TO remain as simple as can be to perform as we have a technologically challenged employee or 2 who still think this social media fad will pass any day now. So needless to say, the solution cannot require someone to make separate posts (even if it's largely copy & paste) on each platform or anything even close to it.
I've been letting the creative juices rage around this for a minute and am thinking
  1. something like a FB post in the morning containing a stock photo of a recognizable landmark near the venue and some text saying something to the effect of "We'll be at XXX from noon today. Come on by"
  2. a dropped pin post (with map/directions/etc) upon reaching the destination
  3. an Instagram post/story/whatever at peak business hour (most crowded) explaining that everyone else is down here at XXX having a great time by our truck. "where are you?" kinda thing
Of course we want all 3 of these posts to automatically repost everywhere else (i.e. FB post also shows up on website, insta and twitter while the insta story reposts to FB and also tweets a link to it, etc etc) and that the OP will only have to create 3 posts TOTAL to achieve this... maybe even less if we could find/develop some app that will detect the address the driver pulled up in is maps/directions app and automatically drop the pin and publish location once that destination is reached, but that's probably getting a lil too far ahead of myself. hopefully, you're starting to pick up what I'm laying down.
I"m not looking for suggestions on how that EXACT set of scenarios could be pulled off. Rather I'm looking for anecdotal posts about what has worked in the past and what hasn't. F all the things I'm wanting to do, are any of them pure genius? or can you shoot any of them full of holes? Why types of apps or technology is out there that might help with some of this (either intentionally or as a lucky side effect) that you think wold be worth me looking into? In other words, I'm not looking to have you do my work and/or thinking for me, I'd just like to hear how some of you seasoned, successful food-trucksters are informing the masses as to your whereabouts.
Anyone care to share?

2023.06.01 01:46 Several-Succotash726 My parents really fucked with my mind; my siblings dgaf

My parents have always been shite. Totally favoured the oldest sibling growing up. Oldest sibling would cause issues deliberately then my dad would scream at me, shove me around, tell me to fucking pack my bags and fuck off. I'd then go to my room lock the door and cut myself.
My mother would slam shit about mutter loudly so she would.wake me up talk down to me in public and she even watched a man SA me on a bus. I recall once mKing myself some food because I was hungry. Just oven chicken. Nothing special I sat down and immediately was called a greedy pig by my dad. I slammed down My fork and he started screaming and threw my food on tbe floor. I left the room and stayed in my locked bedroom for 4 days. By the time I reached 21 I barely spent any time with them. I lived in my room. I despised how I was treated and spoken to. Never anything positive said to me. Never any kind words. Siblings are shit stirring arseholes. If it wasn't for my DH and DSs I think my time would have come. I still occasionally think of CS but wouldn't do that to my boys.

2023.06.01 01:30 CornSquashBeans A Social Star in a World of Loners: Part 36

Memory transcription subject: Josak, Arxur-Human Cultural Exchange Member
Date [standardized human time]: November 11, 2136
As crude as the comparison is, it was almost like wrestling Gojid trying to get Moss back onto the RV. She and her dad kept getting roped back into conversation with each other. Carmen described it as like a “midwestern goodbye” even if they were from the eastern portion of the North American landmass. Eventually the goodbye finally ended and Mr. Lykaios offered a final farewell to us all and a thanks for my help fixing the door.
In all truth, I felt it was unearned. He did most of the work. I just held up the door so he could balance it on the hinges. I did learn from him though. Still, I didn’t know exactly how useful it was to know how to repair a doorway.
“Aight. We got, uh, like 15 minutes until the stop and shop. That’ll be the last place ta piss, shit, or release other fluids until we reach the ranch.” Moss questioned.
They had taken up the driver’s seat with Carmen.
“Noted!” Geo yelled in response.
“Can you please not swear around my kids so much?” Carmen solemnly asked.
Moss raised their fist as if to flip the bird to Carmen, but instead, they held up a thumbs up and spoke. “Sure thing, toots. My apple hoagies.”
“Ugh. You’re supposed to be a therapist, and you’re honestly helping by just talking to me, but you make it unbearably hard to respect you.” Carmen whispered.
I figured it was best for me to stop listening even if it meant leaving the comfiest spot on the bus. Carefully, I crawled on all fours towards the other end. The other three of the family were all lazing about in the camper’s spacious sleeping cabin. I crossed through their cabin area and into the final section of the moving house. Mara and Dani were sleeping while Geo listened to little videos from a place called “youtube”.
I left them to themselves and closed the door between their room and the place I wanted to myself. I wanted to figure out how to play the guitar that Moss had stolen for me. I had no idea how to, but I figured it couldn’t be too hard. I sat down into the worn chair in the corner and picked up the flimsy wooden instrument. I didn’t even know entirely how to hold it. Everyway I tried to hold it felt wrong in a different way. I settled on the way I had seen Cris hold it. It still felt off, but it was what it was.
I tried to hold the guitar pic in my claws, but my fingers simply weren’t meant for such a small thing. Instead, I thought for a second and then tried my own strategy. I beated one of my claws against the strings, making sure not to snag it. The strings gave out a twangy sound. The heavier strings were lower in pitch while the lighter ones were higher.
I still had no idea how to play the dang thing, but I knew what sounds I liked. I tried to keep them quiet though and I tried and tried again to recreate them the same each time. Even if I didn’t know what I was doing, I still enjoyed it. It was soothing to hear the ornamental sounds. The few minutes spent alone felt euphoric. I think it was because I didn’t feel alone with the guitar. I felt as if I was with a good friend. One that I hoped to see again eventually.
I put the instrument back down as the bus rolled to a stop in a very large battery station. I walked out into a strip of shining LED lights and a few neon signs too. Despite the fact that humanity had nearly been bombed to oblivion, the station was still packed full of travelers and freight drivers. It was 20 separate lanes of chaos with batteries charging on electrical racks all the way down. There was a market and a restroom next to the lanes.
To any other Arxur, the place would seem comparable to a small military camp, but I knew better. Humans were decadent in the best of ways. The whole place was for everyone to enjoy, and that was honestly beautiful. A whole station full of cheap food for weary travelers and plenty of amenities for any sort of situation.
“Joe, you get battery duties. I already swiped the card and everything. Don’t electrocute yourself. I’m gonna grab some grub for everyone.” Moss declared.
I followed the therapists orders and carefully replaced the batteries in order to not electrocute myself. The humans used some sort of hydrogen cell instead of the usual diesel powered vehicles I was used to. Regardless, it wasn’t too hard to figure it all out. The battery symbol on the bus was quite recognizable and with a quick flip of a hatch, I found the 4 packs. It took a little out of me, but I managed to replace the heavy contraptions with freshly charged ones from the charging wall. As I was about to place the last fresh battery into the bus, I heard a voice yell out from the lane over.
“Holeeee shit! Is that another Arxur I spy? Jesus, you guys sure are finding your ways around the states, huh?” the voice inquired.
I placed the battery into the compartment and finished the job of locking it up before responding. Though I was curious as to his mention of another Arxur, I didn’t want to forget to close up the compartment. Getting stuck on the side of the road wouldn’t be fun. As I completed my task, the man grew impatient and questioned me again. I feared he would respond with anger, but he instead seemed worried that he had offended me.
“Hey! You ignoring me? I wasn’t trying to be rude or nothing.” the man declared.
“No, mister. Just making sure I close everything up. My apologies.” I replied
“Oh, sorry then.” he babbled
“What did you mean by another Arxur? Am I not the first one out here?” I asked.
“Oh, uh, hell nah. Plenty of y’all have been seen trying to head inland from the coasts. Heck, I just dropped one of yas off in the Appalachians. Feller said he was trying to escape some government fuckwads or sometin. You trying to do the same, boy?” he inquired.
“No. I am merely trying to make a better life for myself and a family I found here. My family.” I said with a smile.
“Well good on ya, buddy. Hehehe. They told us before y’all came here that you were all a buncha psychobillies or somethin, but y’all don’t seem so bad. Ya just need some meat on your bones and you calm right down. That’s how that other feller was. He was as ornery as could be, but once I got some food in him, he cheered up quite a bit.” the chunky man laughed.
“I apologize on behalf of our species if he gave you any trouble. We’re… we’re not good people.” I admitted.
“Arxur, you fellers ain’t that bad. So don’t apologize like that. I’ve met worse in my own family. My daddy, he was a very brutal man. Mean old drunk. He would beat me, and he was family. That feller I picked up, he described the same story. I related to him. I relate to you all a bit, I spose. You fellers are just a buncha fellers that found themselves in a bad situation. Sure, you’re a little less moral than the Donner party, but ya still are trying to be better. I see that.” the man cheerily declared.
“Mmm. You have my sympathies. No child should have to go through that.” I replied.
“Eh, I won out in the end. He’s long dead from cirrhosis and I’m off saving the country and giving rides to aliens. It’s fun times. But this ain’t about me, bud. Don’t be calling your race bad people. You’re good people as long as you can see that you done bad. You yourself, you seem good.” the man declared.
I smiled sarcastically and responded similarly “Well, thank you, sir. I will try to prove you right. I don’t entirely think so though.”
“You have a right to think that, but I hope you change your mind one day. Have a good one, boy.” he said.
After he got done with his talk, the man returned to his hauler. He lumbered in and started the beast up. It gave out sounds of steam almost like a boiler whistle. Slowly, it lurched forward and started the man off on his next journey. In my head, I wished him the best.
As I turned to leave, I heard another more familiar voice from Geo. He ran up to me with flailing arms and yelled. “Josak, watch this!”
The kid put one of his arms in an L shape and pulled it down as if to signify something. The trucker rolled his window down and stopped his journey short for one last bit of speech.
“Sure thing, kid! You take care of that lizard, ya hear?” the trucker yelled before tugging a string within his rig.
The beast of a truck let out a loud and bellowing noise. The horn was almost painful to listen to, but the kid loved it. Geo burst into laughter and it only amplified as the rest of the trucks in the joint started joining in. It was a chorus of painfully loud horns and blares, but Geo loved it. He was happy and that was good.
The trucker gave out a final loud bout of laughter before rolling up his window and heading off into the world for good. I waved the stranger goodbye as I would probably never see him again.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The bustling port fell into its more usual noises. Carmen, Dani, Mara, and Moss all returned in due time. I waited with the kid in the camper until they finally got back in.
“Joe, catch!” Moss blurted as they entered the carriage.
They tossed a bag of unknown contents into the air and I did my best to catch the thing, but failed due to my inability to raise my arms up so high. I shamefully yoinked the bag from the ground instead. Inside there were glorious blessings such as jerkied meats and the treat that I coveted most, corn bread.
I opened all the packages and combined a little bit of everything into a mash before shoving it in. The flavors of the bread and the meat mixed together well enough. I loved it. With a mouth still full of food, I started yelling to the cockpit. “Thanks, Moss. The snacks are good.”
“No problemo, croco. Enjoy and bone apple teeth.” Moss chuckled.
I did enjoy it as they had asked of me. I put aside the rest of the cornbread though so as to not disturb my stomach. The jerky was delicious. The sausages were delicious. Even the SPAM in it’s uncooked form was delicious. What made it even better was that I was not eating alone. Everyone else was eating too. Charging port chicken wings, sandwiches, and vegetable chips. The atmosphere was something that could not be known in the Dominion.
They did not eat with shame on their minds, and as a result, neither did I. I knew that I was eating with a clear conscience unlike the times before. I only wished so much that the others could have experienced such luxuries, but at least the trucker had given me some hope. There were other Arxur out there on Earth. Others were trying to leave and to find new lives away from the horrors of war.
That restored my faith in us a little. We weren’t all like Idokam. We didn’t all need convincing to know that we needed to change. Some of us just needed a chance, and now that the gates were open, at least a few were taking it.
Other rejects and empaths were probably out there, just like me, trying to live one day at a time and trying to find a new way. Cheers to the draft dodgers and to the AWOL hunters. May the assholes who started the wars be forced to fight them so that they finally end.

Josak has a talk with a trucker. This chapter is kind of a mix between filler and actual content. I wasn't entirely sure what to do with it, but I didn't want to skip out on the entire journey back to the glove. I hope you all don't mind it too much.

2023.05.31 23:36 EatinSLOCal Bear City Social [Food Truck] - Review

Bear City Social [Food Truck] - Review
Background:
When we started Eatin’ SLOCal, we had a dilemma. Our mission statement was to focus on reviewing the restaurants in the city of San Luis Obispo, you won’t see us posting things from elsewhere in the county, a neighboring county, LA/SF, or somewhere else in the world (unless it’s April Fools’ Day – that was fun). So while we love our local food trucks, it presented a dilemma as they often operate outside of the city and they’re often never in the same spot. Therefore, we landed on a rule – if a food truck/stall/etc. operates at least once a week within town at the same spot, they can be featured on Eatin’ SLOCal, which is why I was happy to see a handful of food trucks take up a parking spot at The Kitchen Terminal and that brings us to our final featured burger spot during #NationalBurgerMonth at Bear City Social.
\"Elote Style\" Cauliflower Taco (left) and Linguica & Eggs Taco (right)
Setting:
📍The Kitchen Terminal SLO, 4750 Allene Way, San Luis Obispo, CA 93401
Bear City Social is a food truck that does the Runway Wednesdays out at the Kitchen Terminal, a collection of local food trucks that have been gathering since the end of last November to put on a weekly lunch service (and formerly early dinner service too that has seemingly been axed). Their navy blue truck has been around since April of 2021, starting out by frequenting Tent City in Atascadero. At The Kitchen Terminal, they have a table with four seats out and a table with utensils, napkins, condiments, and complimentary sunscreen, which I found to a be a nice touch, there’s no real shade in the area. Check their socials for upcoming stops and hours, Runway Wednesdays are from 11 AM – 3 PM at The Kitchen Terminal.
Humpty Dumpty Smashie
Menu/Selection:
The Featured Menu has the BCS Smashie (a classically topped smashed burger), a Gaucho Bowl (a quinoa bowl), their Quesadilla Suiza, Pozole Rojo (a Mexican stew), and a BLT Salad. There is an Additional Smashie Menu, featuring their Smashie burger with 4 additional topping/dressing styles – Americano (classic burger fixings), The Humpty Dumpty (with a fried egg and bacon), the Cali (cliché avocado, swiss, and green chili), and the Bear BQ (their take on a BBQ/Western burger). You can also add or remove any toppings you want to make your own perfect burger and there is a plant based option available on request. Currently, on the Specials Menu is their tacos with 6 different options all served with cilantro, onions, and a scratch made salsa – Beef Barbacoa, Cuban Pork Shoulder, “Elote Style” Cauliflower, Santa Maria style Tri-Tip, Pollo Sobroso, and Linguica & Eggs. On the dessert menu is a Double Chocolate Brownie and a Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookie. They have canned soda and Liquid Gravity Water for purchase as well.
Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookie
What I Had:
I had an “Elote Style” Cauliflower Taco, Linguica & Eggs Taco, The Humpty Dumpty Smashie, and a Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookie. The tacos, as mentioned above, are topped with cilantro, onions, and a house made salsa. The Linguica and eggs are a classic combination, with the sausage sliced and mixed in with the eggs – great for a breakfast taco. The “Elote Style” Cauliflower tacos where cauliflower seared on the griddle (I assume) topped with Elote fixings and it definitely mimicked that flavor, even the texture of the cauliflower emulated roasted corn, my only note for it (and this is a very irrelevant one) is that there was too much on it that it was hard to close the taco without it spilling out.
The Humpty Dumpty Smashie is a 1/3 pound Wagyu Beef Patty place on a hot griddle with onions and smashed flat (as flat as you can smash almost 6 oz of beef without it being too large for a bun – which is not flat at all) topped with American cheese, a fried egg, bacon, ranchero sauce, and a spicy aioli. Okay, you all know how I hate when something is advertised as a smash burger and it’s a thick boy. Normally, that’s because the burger is just a generic burger that’s been smashed yada yada yada. Now people are getting away with evoking the smash name without it being a true smash burger and apparently the new term is a Smashie. Let me just say, this burger is good. The Wagyu is fatty, but perfectly cooked in a smashed way and on the toasted brioche balances it out. That fried egg is runny and it was oozing all over before I even bit in, which plays off the bacon and the ranchero sauce and spicy aioli. The brioche is soft and all the textures are fantastic – except the for the bacon, which was cooked but not crispy in the slightest, which is not how I like my bacon. Either way, this may have been the best burger I’ve had this month. Finally, the chocolate chip cookie was good, a mound style similar to a Levain Bakery cookie, just smaller with chunks of chocolate, slightly warm. It was soft and tasty.
Would I Have It Again:
Yes, the Wagyu Smashie is fantastic. It’s not a smash burger in my opinion, but it’s no longer advertised 100% as one, it’s smashed and is a delicious burger. The Linguica and Eggs taco was a good twist on a classic breakfast for me and I’d go back for that before it leaves the Specials menu. I look forward to seeing where this truck goes, they are locally sourced, “farm to street” and it shows in the care in their dishes. The only downside is limited seating (but it’s a food truck so that makes sense). So with all that in mind, Bear City Social gets an Eatin’ SLOCal rating of – Take-Out Now!

2023.05.31 22:12 chungleong New housing option for students and young professionals

Saw an ad for this place at a bus stop today and thought it might be useful for foreign students or young professionals coming to this city:
https://shedcoliving.com/krakow/
It's located at one of Krakow's premium neighborhoods. You'll be living next to a beautiful park and also a large open grassy area called the Błonia. A tram stop is a stone's throw away. Trip to the Old Town should take 6-7 minutes. It's within walking distance to AGH. There's also a very nice food truck park in the immediate vicinity and another nice one across the Błonia. Great place to live for those who can afford it.

Hello! It's been a while. I'd like to give a huge thanks to u/cruisingNW for writing a portion of this chapter and over all being a huge help in keeping me motivated! As always, thanks to u/SpacePaladin15 for creating NoP.

“Welcome to Brog’s Authentic Gojidi Saladry, Good Salads and Good Service, can I take your order? '' I droned, barely managing to offer the promised good service.
“Uhhhh… yeah… lemme get a uhhh… spekkin uhhhhhh…” The venlil before me mumbled, his head stupidly cocked to the side to give him a better view of the menu looming over my back. I sighed internally as the customer continued to hem and haw. How hard was it to pick a salad? It’s leaves and fruit for protector’s sake, It’s not like you could mess it up.
“...uhhhhh Cradle special?” The customer finally decided. Internally, I scoffed at the name. Like most of our ‘authentic gojid food,’ half the ingredients weren’t even native to the cradle. Faral leaves are from Mileau by Ki-yu, and they make up the Mazic’s share of the dish! I don’t think ‘authentic gojid salads’ even exist.
“And would you like that in small, medium, or large?” I asked, before realizing my mistake.
“Uhhhhhh…” began the venlil again. I resisted the urge to curl into a ball on the floor. It’s the last claw. It’s the last claw. It’s the last claw.
“Might I recommend the large sir? You can always save what you don’t eat for later,” I interjected, stopping another minute long rumination period.
“Oh. Yeah! That sounds good!”
“Alright, so your total is going to be–”
“Uh, Parq?” My manager Vella interrupted. “Aren’t you forgetting something?”
Brahk.
“Would you like to Mazic-size your salad for only half a credit more?” I ask, bracing myself.
“Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh…” began the venlil once more.
Stepping away, Vella commanded, “And don’t look so grumpy Parq. Remember, at Brog’s, the customers are our herd!”
Last claw, last claw…

I tapped my pad to buzz myself into the building, welcomed home by the pests that scurry flat under the baseboards they hide in. I could hear Against the Herd coming from the landlord’s living room as I trudged up the stairs to my rented guest room. Maybe with Kurlek going off like that I could finally get some practice in.
I shouldered my way past the stubborn door of my ‘apartment’, and looked around at the messed bed, scattered quills, and stacked cans of Sprunk. I brush aside some crumpled Broq’s trash, and pull my case from under the bed. I laid it on my lap and ran my claws over the polished retan inlaid with red reedwood, creating a border of Gojid script I, and my Grampa, were never taught to read. Twisting my claws through brass latches, I opened the case and beheld the only thing left to care about. My Grampa’s Sonophone.
With practiced movements, I twisted the pipes of thin and brittle wood together, taking care not to put another scratch on the ancient varnish. I nestled the lifebag under my arm and laid the breather between my lips, and filled the fabric reservoir, taking care not to fill the precious treasure with my spit.
With another breath, I pressed my life against me and felt the room shake with music. With an undeserved sincerity, I thanked my stiff bed for being rock solid enough to feel the dirge I played rumble through the bedframe and mattress. I mourned where I was, and what I had done; or hadn’t. But the embracing vibrato pulled from my mind memories of Grampa playing this same instrument, while a much smaller Me laid out on the floor next to it, to better feel the vibrations rattle through my body and bones.
Just about to reach the bridge, to hear the weaving melody lift me from my lot… But an arrhythmic pounding stuttered the instrument and yanked me from my delusions of happiness.
I sat for a moment, not wanting to walk to the door. Maybe it had been the downstairs neighbor jabbing at the ceiling with her broom again. Yeah, that’s probably all it—
BANG BANG BANG
Nope, that was the door. Resigning myself to getting no more practice this paw, I rose to answer it. As I schlepped over to the door the pounding increased in frequency.
“Yes, yes I hear you, I’m coming, don’t get your quills all—“
I opened the door to a looming mass of muscle and fur. The flickering fluorescent light of the hall cast a long shadow into my dimly lit room, leaving me shrouded in darkness, the backlit beast looking like the void of space itself. The thing snorted, then spoke:
“Can you cut that brahking noise out?! I’m trying to enjoy the news and you’re shaking the entire building with that hunk of junk! You sound like my cousin in heat!”
Trying to keep my quills from flaring out in fear, I choked out, “I-I’m sorry Codua, I’ll k-keep it down.”
“This is the third time I’ve had problems with your noise this night, predator. If it happens again, you’re on the streets,” my Mazic landlord spat in response.
Grabbing the handle to the door, he finished, “ I don’t know why you even bother practicing that speh, it’s not like anyone wants to hear it.”
Slamming it, he left me in the dim light of my apartment once more. I shuffled back to my bed and slowly disassembled my instrument once more, returning the delicate pipes to their respective places with unassured movements. As I gently squeezed the lifebag, the remaining air rushed out noiselessly, leaving myself feeling deflated and empty. I stored it alongside the reeds before shutting the ornate case and hiding it under the bed once more. I sat on the edge of my bed for a while in silence, trying not to think. Finally, I rose and pulled the light switch, shrouding the room in darkness. Only the beams escaping the blackout shades of the window kept me from utter darkness.
I curled up on my bed, feeling nothing but utterly exhausted. And tomorrow was another day.
Tears seeped from my eyes.

I awoke feeling completely unrefreshed. Thankfully, I could not afford to ruminate on the events of last night, as I barely had enough time to ruminate on my breakfast of kort pods before I left for my first work claw of the paw.
I walked through the streets completely alone. Throngs of venlil filled the sidewalk, herding together as they moved towards their destinations. My spines normally ensured that they kept a tail away at all times, and my recently revealed predator status had added another tail on top of that, leaving me in a herd by myself.
As I approached the transport stop, the crowds parted before me and my eyes were stabbed by a flash of yellow. Someone had stuck a piece of paper to the side of the stop. I inspected the paper only to find it in a language that I could not understand.
Well, I didn’t have anything better to do while I waited for the bus.
Pulling out my data pad, I loaded up the visual translator program. Idly, I wondered who would have left such a thing stuck to a bus stop. Even if it was loosely attached, it was still vandalism of public property.
My pad gave off a soft tone, displaying the text in the Gojidi language.
“BAND SEEKING MEMBERS! Up and coming Glacierview band is seeking bassist. Must have your own gear. All species welcome. Come ready to rock!”
I scoffed out loud. Must be some kind of yotul band if they were using rocks as an instrument. And they must be extremely desperate if they’re searching for members at the bus stop with a paper flier!
They must be as desperate as I am!

I saved the listed pad contact before sitting on the bench at the transport stop, mentally preparing myself for another claw of work.

2023.05.31 09:06 kojobrown "Dangerous" Areas of Oahu: A Guest's Perspective

Aloha.
I have lived on Oahu for 12 years. I came here when I was 20.
People who come here always inevitably ask if there are areas to avoid. Well...maybe not always, because a lot of people think Hawaii is one big beach town and don't know that life happens here too.
Anyway, having spent a lot of time in three of the areas considered most "dangerous" on Oahu, here are my impressions of Ewa Beach, Waipahu, and Waianae. (Pls excuse formatting, I'm on mobile)
  1. Ewa Beach
The real Ewa Beach. Hanakahi Street, Hau Bush, Papipi Road, Silva's, etc. Because a lot of people say "Ewa Beach" when they mean Ocean Pointe or Ewa Gentry. I've heard stories that back before the Gentry-fication of the area, Ewa Beach was rough. I have a good friend who, back in the 90s, had just moved to Hawaii and was set to go to Campbell. Apparently, a security guard at the school told his mom she might want to rethink that decision, as a nerdy Haole boy might not fare well at that particular school. That friend ended up going to Radford.
Today, while Ewa Beach definitely still has a reputation, I get the feeling that it has calmed down a lot. I think this is due to the expansion of greater Ewa and the influx of so many new people. Back then, Ewa Beach was isolated. It was the end of the road. Nowadays, it is a neighborhood in a much larger population center.
Ewa Beach certainly feels different from greater Ewa. It's a lot older, more local, and more "neighborhoody." It has an identity that one immediately recognizes as Ewa Beach after living here for a certain amount of time. And you can always recognize an Ewa Beach guy. I don't know how, but you can. And if you can't recognize it, you'll know it in time, because Ewa Beach people always let you know they're from Ewa Beach.
There are still stories about robberies, fights, and other unfortunate events that one hears coming out of Ewa Beach, but I would absolutely not consider it a very "dangerous" area. Rough? Sure, in some places. There were just some robberies and assaults down there. But I've never felt in grave danger being down there. Just cautious about my surroundings.
Ewa Beach is definitely an interesting place. It's a perfect encapsulation of the tension Oahu feels between the old and the new. It's a town with an old reputation for lawlessness that has lost much of its grit because of rapid Gentry-fication.
You know those old guys who you know were badass fighters in their youths? The guys who have grown overweight, are gray-haired, and who like to regale you with crazy stories from 30 years ago? They aren't as fearsome as they once were, but you still wouldn't want to be on their bad side and so you respect them. That, to me, is Ewa Beach.
  1. Waipahu
Go to Don Quijote and count how many languages you hear. English. Filipino. Ilocano. Marshallese. Samoan. Chuukese. Filipino. Ilocano. Filipino. Welcome to Waipahu. 94 Block.
For those who don't know, Waipahu is an old mill town that used to process a lot of sugar cane. It's not a beach town like Ewa Beach or Waianae. It's like a suburb of a suburb of Town ("Honolulu"). I mean suburb not in the sense of Suburbia, but in the sense of a town somewhat in the orbit of a larger city. I used to hate going there because it felt so congested, and then they started building the rail and I hated it even more.
Now, however, after having worked there for about a year, I love Waipahu. Old Waipahu town, from about Kunia road all the way to Waipahu High School. Yes, I know, Kunia, Waipio, and Waikele exist, but I mean Waipahu Waipahu.
It's gritty. It's historic. It can certainly be sketchy, and it's even menacing in places. I had a friend who lived on Pupuole Street, and he told me many stories about the nighttime activities in the neighborhood. Every time I went to visit him there, my head was on a swivel.
Then there's Aniani. Oh man. It's such a small neighborhood, really just a street, but it has a reputation for being pretty hectic. I've never hung out there, but I've taken rides down there and it's pretty wild. Casual fire starting, trash everywhere, sneakers hanging from power lines, addicts pushing shopping wagons full of "found" goods, etc.
My boss was born and raised in Waipahu, and when I asked her about Aniani, she told me it's always been Aniani. I even heard nobody used to deliver food there because it was too dangerous. That said, I think part of this was probably due to how tight that street is and how you have to turn around at the end to get out.
Waipahu transit station? Sweet old Filipina tutus and zombies. Times shoppers. People just passing through to get their TB shots at the Civic Center. Others passed out on the bus stop benches.
Waipahu is frequently in the news for robberies, break-ins, and other unpleasant happenings. There are a lot of homeless, many of whom are, unfortunately, addicted to drugs. I worked in a medical office in the area and we had many incidents with public disturbances, including public nudity, public masturbation, and other such quirky occurrences.
That said, there is a beauty to Waipahu. I love its diversity. It is a kind of entry point for many new Hawaii residents, especially from the Philippines, but also from Samoa, the Marshall Islands, Chuuk, etc. Mom and Pop shops, restaurants, barber shops, medical offices, and all manner of businesses line Farrington Highway. Waipahu feels unique among other Oahu towns because of its ethnic composition. These cultures give Waipahu a different kind of flavor than places like Waianae or Kapolei. The only other place I imagine has a similar vibe is Kalihi, but I haven't spent much time there.
Waipahu is very dense, as it is an immigrant town with multiple generations often living in the same small apartments. Familial living is the norm in Hawaii, but in Waipahu this is even more prevalent. It's not just parents, grandparents, and children -- it's parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, children, cousins, uncles, and aunties.
Is Waipahu dangerous? It certainly feels more gritty than Ewa Beach, and one certainly should take certain precautions in certain parts of the town. It's like...you're unlikely to be shot at, but there are places there where you wouldn't necessarily be surprised to see people with guns. I guess it can be dangerous, but I feel like if you know the town and how to navigate it, you'll be fine. Waipahu is certainly not Detroit, but it ain't Mililani either (Mililani seems to be becoming more like Waipahu though from what I've been seeing in the news). Overall, Waipahu is one of my favorite places on the island.
(Take a shot for every time I write the word "certainly")
  1. Waianae
This is the one you've been waiting on. The West Side. 96792. The Waianae Coast. If you're scared, just stay in Kapolei.
For convenience, I will refer to the whole Coast as Waianae. In reality, there are differences between Nanakuli, Maili, Waianae, and Makaha. A quick impression:
But let's proceed with the conversation.
This is the area most people who aren't from Hawaii first hear about when they ask what the most dangerous part of the island is or where to stay away from. Sure, they'll hear about Kalihi. They'll hear about Wahiawa and Waipahu. But Waianae is different.
Waianae is isolated. One way in, one way out. It's far removed from the sprawl that starts in Kapolei and ends roughly somewhere after Hawaii Kai. It's closed off. This isolation is a kind of double-edged sword: on the one hand, it ensures that Waianae stays Waianae, but on the other hand, it concentrates a lot of the darker aspects of Waianae to that region.
I was once one of those new Hawaii residents, but my knowledge of Waianae was gained from Google prior to moving to Hawaii. When I arrived in Kapolei, a family member living here took me to Waianae shortly after my arrival. I was shocked. I saw homeless tents all along the road. I saw liquor stores and big lifted trucks. I smelled weed literally everywhere. I saw lots of cops in certain parts. I saw a population that looked different from the people I had just seen in Kapolei.
12 years later, I still see all of that, but I see Waianae for what it truly is: a community.
The thing about Waianae is that it's not just local, it's Hawaiian (but with a whole lotta Portuguese last names). This makes it different than somewhere like, say, Pearl City or Nuuanu. Those places have plenty of locals, but ethnically speaking, these areas are more Filipino and/or Japanese.
Waianae, on the other hand, has the highest concentration of Kanaka Maoli on Oahu, which means that local culture there is dominated by Hawaiian culture. This is where you find Hawaiian immersion schools, Hawaiian murals, and so forth. There are non-Hawaiians who live in Waianae, but the historical structure of the community is rooted in old Hawaiian culture.
I used to work at the Comp (if you know, you know). And it was at the Comp where I first learned just how strong of a community Waianae was. My co-workers would call older Patients uncle and aunty, which is obviously the norm in Hawaii, but they would actually be related to the Patients. Like, "oh yeah that's my mom's cousin" or "that's my dad's older brother." Everybody seemed to know each other from school, family ties, or some other connection. It was incredible.
After work, I'd drive home back to Kapolei, and everyone was outside. Everyone was at the beach (shout out to Nanakuli Beach Park), at the parks, taking walks, etc. And as soon as I got back to Kapolei, with its shopping centers and carefully-manicured streets, I felt like I had left something behind in Waianae.
Waianae is rough. I hesitate to use the term "ghetto," because I don't think it's quite "ghetto." It's more of a working-class country kind of vibe. It's more rural Mississippi Delta than Southside Chicago. But make no mistake, whatever you call it, Waianae is a rough area. Drugs are everywhere, shootings are not uncommon (I started writing this shortly after the chicken fight shooting and there was just another shooting at Makaha Beach) and scrapping is a beloved pastime.
It's sad to see the social issues that plague Waianae, and there is a lot of work that needs to be done in that community. But the beautiful thing is that the work is being done by the community. That's the thing about Waianae: nobody there is content with just waiting for the State to help out. Waianae takes matters into its own hands.
The State won't provide affordable housing for the house houseless? Waianae builds a houseless community.
Healthcare hard to come by in Waianae? Waianae builds a medical center.
Hawaiian language in danger of dying out among the younger generations? Waianae builds Hawaiian language immersion schools.
They say Waianae is ghetto, but I say it's proud. It's not somewhere the average tourist or newcomer to Oahu is likely to understand, so many may go once and not go back or avoid it altogether. Waianae's reputation is part of the reason it has managed to retain a certain vibe that other parts of Oahu have lost.
Is it dangerous? I hate this question. Waianae is not Rio de Janeiro, but if someone visiting from Iowa were to ask me, I'd tell them that you definitely need to understand that it's not the Hawaii they promote to tourists in the brochures. Someone from the Bronx might not consider it dangerous because there aren't swaths of gangbangers shooting at each other, but they'd be wrong in thinking Waianae is soft.
  1. In Conclusion
These are some of the areas newcomers to Hawaii are told are dangerous. All are on the western part of Oahu, but only Waianae is truly the West Side. Don't let some townie convince you that Kunia is the West Side. Ewa Beach and Waiaphu are sometimes referred to as the South Side, though not as often as Waianae is called the West Side.
I'd say Waianae is without a doubt the roughest area, followed by Waipahu in second place and Ewa Beach in third. But all of these areas have their charm. Waianae is naturally beautiful. The beach, the mountains, the real people of the real Hawaii. Waipahu is a diverse town with great food. And Ewa Beach is the capital of Hawaii.
I've not spent enough time in Kalihi, Wahiawa, Halawa, Palolo, etc. to give a deep analysis, but maybe next time I'll cover the "nicer" areas of Oahu like Kapolei or the really nice areas like Hawaii Kai. Or maybe the East Side or the North Shore or Kaimuki or something. I'll probably do the Laie area. That's a whole different island as far as I'm concerned. Anyway, thanks for reading.
Aloha.

2023.05.31 07:10 Competitive_Text1914 Hells Kitchen 6th Place Season: Episode 4

Chef Gordon Ramsay welcomed back his Chefs to hells kitchen and said he hoped that the 3 worst Chefs had been eliminated and all the dead weight had gone and Zach said it was time for CHEF GRANT BANKS to return on the next challenge and service and that no one was ready while Kanae was excited after the strong last service as to what the next challenge would be. Chef Ramsay announced that the next challenge would be 2 Chefs from each team cooking 4 different types of fish and Drew said fish was his thing so he was very confident of the next challenge being a victory as long as his team supported him. First up was the battle of the trout with Van, Zach, Kashia and Tara competing and Van’s dish was comfortably the best of the 4 with Van screaming WOOOO and hoping the blue team would be getting out of Hells Kitchen today. Next up was the battle of the Arctic char with Josh overcooking the fish and Santos serving burnt potatoes, it was down to Brad and Elizabeth and Elizabeth’s was judged as the best dish which delighted her to finally prove herself to her team on a challenge. Next up was cod and the red team took the lead when Nikki beat Sabrina, Giovanni and Drew with Drew bemused how he lost the challenge and Nikki said she was delighted as the red team needed to keep the momentum up. Van was fuming at the blue team falling behind and said Antonio and Ed needed to pull this back to avoid the blue team losing again. However, despite Dannie overcooking her mahi mahi, Kanae’s dish was the best dish of the day and the red team won 3:1 to win again! Kanae said this was her best day so far to be the reason the red team won and Antonio said he knew this was not going to be a good day of punishment before service tomorrow.
The blue team were grumpy during prep with Ed noting the the blue team needed to pick themselves up before dinner service and Josh getting into an argument with Zach during prep over prepping a sauce and Van told them to stop arguing like children to get a strong service tonight. Antonio on hot appetisers said it was his time to get the blue team off to an amazing start but he spent way too long cooking in mid air and served an underdone risotto with Ramsay telling him to stop cooking in mid air. Ed tried leading with Brad on the fish station and despite them serving perfect scallops and Antonio’s next risottos being accepted, Josh got behind on salads saying he wasn’t going to get the presentation wrong and Brad told him to get a move on and Ramsay said they shouldn’t be waiting on salads. Josh did get his act together and Brad and Ed supported well to finish off the appetisers strongly for the blue team but Zach serving tableside shrimp served raw shrimp for a table and Ramsay said careless mistakes like this should not be happening. Van wanted to lead the team strongly on the garnish station but after an initial strong start from Giovanni and Drew on the meat station, Giovanni served cold NY Strip which he said was horrible for him as he has cooked a million steaks in his life and this was followed by Brad serving overcooked cod and Ramsay said the service can’t fall apart again. Brad and Ed did get it back together on the fish station and Drew communicated strongly with Van to get the next tickets out but on a late ticket Drew served overcooked lamb and Drew said he couldn’t believe he made such a silly mistake. The final tickets continued to drag as Drew and Giovanni completely lost their timing as Drew claimed his lamb was ready 3 minutes of ahead of Giovanni’s pork but then realised it was still raw and Giovanni told Drew to stop opening the oven as he was nowhere near ready anyway. Van furiously had enough from the garnish station and told Ed to finish his last garnishes as Van brought said the lamb was ready in 2 minutes as the final tickets finally finished with Ramsay saying they may have completed service but it was far too painful.
The red team got off to a strong start with Nikki vocal on cold appetisers, getting out the first flatbreads and salads and Dannie’s 1st risottos flying out as well. Dannie did frustrate Kanae and Kashia on fish by pushing the time back on risottos and Nikki had to get involved to stop Dannie from constantly cooking in midair but Dannie said she wasn’t going to put out bad food and got the rest of her appetisers out. Kashia though served greasy scallops having used too much oil to cook them and Kashia then shouted at Nikki when she told her to give a real time on scallops with Kasha saying too many people talking was very flustrating. Kashia did finally get her scallops accepted and the rest of the appetisers finished well and Sabrina said this was her night to shine on the garnish station. Elizabeth and Tara were on the meat station and Elizabeth said she wanted to lead the station but brought up overcooked chicken on an early ticket with Tara wondering how that happened before Elizabeth had a re-fire accepted. Tara and Elizabeth did perform well on the meat station after this and Kanae now leading the fish station sent up perfect salmon but Sabrina got flustered on the garnish station, getting 2 minutes behind and getting frustrated at being constantly asked for times on garnish. Sabrina continued to get frustrated and ended up serving an overcooked poached egg with Ramsay telling Sabrina to “show the egg some respect!” and finally told someone to help Sabrina as she wasn’t going to ask for it so Dannie came over to help out which annoyed Sabrina even more. After Sabrina sorted her attitude out, Kashia served raw monkfish on a late ticket and ended up just staring at the oven for 2 minutes with the rest of the team just waiting. Ramsay said the service had gotten painful but finally Kashia completed the ticket and service finished but Ramsay said he was not happy with the performance of the red team at all.
Ramsay was furious and said despite both teams completing service it was painful and that both teams had lost, asking for 2 nominees from each team. Zach was quick to jump in and claim he had a good night at tableside but Brad said he can't just lie about serving raw shrimp and he should go up which Zach said was ridiculous as he'd had a great service. Josh said the meat station should go up for being the reason they lost service and Giovanni said appetizers were more of an issue than the meat station and Drew said he was leading the meat station all night which Van said was bullshit and he should up for his sloppy services. The red team seemed to have an easier time deciding who was going up as despite Sabrina claiming that Kashia and Elizabeth should go up, the rest of the team felt Sabrina had to go up as well for constantly being behind on garnish. Sabrina said she was done being nice to people and furiously claimed she had no help tonight and her team let her down. Sabrina and Kashia were both nominated and Kashia said she would have her best day ever tomorrow and Sabrina said there was no way she should go home, pointing out it was her first time up here and Kashia's third. The blue team eventually decided on Drew and Zach as the 2 nominees and after Zach said he would bring fire tomorrow, Drew said this team would fall apart without him which Ramsay disagreed with and eliminated DREW for his failure to live up to his claims as a great Chef and for being the reason the blue team did not win. Ed was happy to see Drew go as he was all no talk and no action while Kashia was livid at Sabrina throwing her under the bus at elimination.

2023.05.31 05:06 Sk1Special How to get by

I’ve lived in my car (or out of a tent or a friends couch ) on and off for almost 20 years. Assuming you’re wanting life to get better rapidly you’re not tryna be a hippy, and you’re wanting to stay in America. I will tell you exactly how to get by, and if you do it you’ll be better off, at least financially, and amazons a great way to do it if you don’t have much support, so we’re gonna stick with Amazon route for now.
During winter you work 3rd shift so you don’t freeze, during summer you work day shift. They’ve both got drawbacks.
Power! Buy a solar panel kit from harbor freight or northern tool or amazon, whatever the best deal is at the time. 100-200watts and 35-70wh is all you need (my 110watt panel, 35ah battery, and charge controller with 300watt inverter setup was roughly 200$ total and basically all you need for phone, some light vr gaming, charge your toothbrush and fan whatever) also get a battery jumper box from Walmart, just for something to charge on cloudy days and incase you’ve had to run car for something.
Temp, hot hands and cheap rated sleeping bag in the winter got me thru -25* , and I’m using a small usb fan with heat blocking window curtains and those rain guards on windows to leave them cracked in summer (it’s still unbearable in the afternoon if not in shade, I have an amc movie pass, a library pass, a planet fitness membership, and I wander around book stores or grocery stores or the mall a lot, and in winter you run the car a few minutes every couple hours.) you’ll get window fog, try to keep a window cracked to help with this, moisture is bad and also not very stealthy. Also a front sun shade.
Stealth. Everyone hates the poors now, as I said I have curtains for side windows, which I’ve taped around the edges to keep light from leaking out, stay off phone as far as talking goes, use earbuds, hopefully car doesn’t look too shitty, but never leave trash or laundry built up or around you on the ground. Have a piss bottle you change regularly. I use planet fitness to park, hospitals, camp grounds, truck stops, Walmarts but they’re iffy, paid garages, quiet streets, friends lots, whatever. When working amazon make sure to choose a fc, big parking lots so you’re less noticeable. Stay out of the way, but not too far out of the way. The idea is to blend in. Change parking spots nightly if you can, and also don’t just recycle the same order weekly. Diversify at least the part of the same lot you use. Also remember if you sleep at work, don’t be sitting there for hours before or after that with door open Just hanging out.
Food. I keep some small dry goods with me, you can get cheap camp stoves if you’re staying in the woods a lot, but way easier to use all the apps to get discounts at restaurants. The best $ wise is using amazons fridges and microwaves and free coffee tea etc. just make sure to label and rotate your food appropriately. Always keep water on you, and take a multivitamin.
Health. Sleep flat, with your shoes n socks off, your teeth brushed, after a shower and massage from Planet fitness or a $15 one from truck stop (go in with a book bag on, mention you’re annoyed they cost $ when a truckers in line and they might pay) . Take your multivitamin and drink water. Do your absolute best to sleep fully. Keep your dirty clothes washed regularly and in a bag till then, spray your boots, cars a small space to be smelly. Dog couch spray from dollar store helps. Wash your bedding. Make a bed platform in back to lay down if ya can. Vacuum and wash car when ya can. Wipe down living areas with cleaning wipes. Again small space. Wipe your a pits bs toes etc with baby wipes if you’re sweaty before/after shower. Use amazons insurance to get any necessary vaccines , glasses, mental health services, whatever you need to function. Chronic problems are draining. Try to eat salad kits not just Big Macs. Try to read a book and relax, or have a fun tinder hookup at their place. Stress kills.
$. Amazon has sign on bonuses, I regularly use. 90days from quitting can reapply, first half at 30 second half at 90 or 180 days, this can get you anywhere from 1-5k. They’ve got met. And vet a lot of places. Cross train. Learning, safety, hr, it, loss prevention. But also problem solve, pg, whatever. The more colors on your vest the less real work you do and the more varied work you can do and the more opportunity for advancement. Of course all this is dependent on you being full time blue badge, we’re again committing to an amazon way here. Do Not contribute to 401k, do choose your other benefits wisely. (Also do have your anytime Pay setup incase of emergency, but we’re tryna save, control your spending) only use pto or vacation or upt when sick or emergency. Use all the rewards programs. No load of laundry or gas tank filled without rewards. Maintenance. Keep your tires full and your oil and other fluids good. Use straight talk or mint Mobil with a Walmart phone, sub 50$ a month for phone is our goal, or the gov connectivity programs (free or reduced cost phone or wifi ) Hotels are only for holidays or when you’re sick. You’re wanting money, get it. use career choice…
Plan. So with career choice, pick a job that pays that you can probably do. Cdl, dental hygienist, it, it literally doesn’t matter. Every real job they offer is going to pay enough somewhere for you to afford rent after. Yes amazons going to fuck your schooling schedule accommodations around peak, especially since you’ve made yourself valuable. Deal with it. Career choice kicks in at 90days now. Then the programs take from like two months to 2 years. Pick a program that makes sense long term for your time, $, effort, schedule, ability etc. be realistic with yourself for your capabilities and goals when choosing. (Also 2 years experience makes you eligible to apply to L4 spots at amazon) It’s not one long week, it’s 1.5 years. It’s gonna suck. But you can do it, probably. It’s just really, really, really annoying.
Reality. So don’t waste your time with any other bs programs or excuses. Don’t give up halfway thru for a partner. Pray your presumably garbage car lasts that whole time and your health does also. Love yourself. Clock in five minutes early and late every day if you’re not on 12s, clock out for lunch after your 6th hour if you can choose your own time, do vet whenever if you’re able. You’re going to work 60-80hr weeks for the next 1-2 years (including school time) everything’s gonna seem like way too much, for too little reward, and it’s gonna seem unfair and crazy you make Amazon a million dollars and can barely afford car insurance… and I’m not debating that. But if you stick with it, barring a terrible accident or whatever and acknowledging you’ve got a car to get around (or can make a shelter and bus route or tent and Uber or scooter) work , at the end of the 1-2 years, you’ll be in a job that’s presumably better than a warehouse floor, and 3-6 months after that you’ll have enough $ saved with enough coming in to be a functional lower middle class American. Congrats you broke the poverty cycle.

2023.05.30 23:45 AccomplishedClue166 Got my tickets for the home opener. First time in Pittsburgh stayingfor the weekend, what's the parking like, and food questions.

(On mobile sorry if format sucks)
I see they got the gold lot and green lot next to the stadium, what's the price like on avg for gameday(and is that where the tailgating spot is), or just better to bus/shuttle or ferry in?
Showing up Friday and staying till monday. Thinking about booking over in north Oakland area as its closer to a few places I wanted to check out, and still looks close enough to downtown to check out some different restaurants.
On that note besides Primanti Bros and Peppi's already on my list, what are some places yall would recommend, I'm not picky I like most everything.
Stuff that looked good on Google
Proper brick oven, wood fire ovens don't normally disappoint.
Pasha Cafe, TripAdvisor says its the #1 restaurant in all of Pittsburgh.
Gaucho Parrilla Argentina, honestly the pictures just look so good and nice portions.
So many good looking Italian restaurants, could probably spend the whole weekend trying different ones. So definitely need some suggestions there, I'm a portions and flavor kind of guy, don't need over the top fancy presentation and all that(but if the foods good fuck it)
And I'm basically from a corn field in ohio so I don't get to try very many ethnic restaurants (we got some decent Mexican but that's about the end of it) so suggestions for like Indian/Thai/Chinese/Mexican/Greek/whatever you got that's good
Burgatory also looked like a good spot
And finally a good seafood spot, and top picks for a steakhouse
Probably more then I'll get to in 4 days but I'm gonna try lol.

2023.05.30 18:52 oshiesmom Is this crazy or am I?

Our son is getting married in a few weeks. I’ll preface this by saying I LOVE my new daughter in law. We are pretty simple people, live on a farm in Michigan and have a modest income. Our kids are all adults and have great jobs. They are super self sufficient and can do just about anything such as car repairs, house repairs/makeovers, cooking, baking, etc. Our daughter in law comes from a swanky town closer to the city. Her parents live in a 1.5 million dollar condo, they just think about money differently. There is a lot of posturing and just assuming that money grows on trees for everyone. The kids, (both 30) wanted a small friends and immediate family wedding- 50 people max. Her folks said they HAVE to have a “real” wedding and they would pay….. not so true as we get closer. We are hosting the rehearsal dinner for 40 people (?) and the wedding is 150 people, a full weekend at a destination wedding place in northern Michigan which involves an air bnb, planning food and drink for the entire weekend, etc. her parents are now starting to freak out regarding the cost.. We are of course paying for our air bnb (700), the dinner ($1000) plus about another $1000 in other expenses. Our two adult daughters were invited to a bachelorette “weekend”.. They just received their bill for the weekend of $210 each. The party started at DIL sisters house with activities, brunch at her parents the following day, an evening out Saturday night, brunch again on Sunday, again at a friends this time. My thoughts are if you want to plan a three day event that is so elaborate with different activities (they had a psychic Friday night) a party bus, tie dye custom shirts, etc. shouldn’t the host foot the bill? I would never host an event that was so costly then expect people to just pony up the cash (btw, sister has plenty of $$$ which is why this isn’t a big deal for her). Her parents keep insisting we get the rehearsal dinner catered instead of having a big Greek cookout. Mind you, we have entertained 200+ in the past with ease so 40 is a walk in the park. It’s not that our menu is cheap either. Beef kabobs, chicken kababs, grilled veggies, homemade pita, tdzicki, Greek salad, rice with red sauce and baklava. I make this 4-5 times a year with beef tenderloin. Every time we discuss the wedding it gets mentioned again. I don’t have $4k that I’m willing to spend to cater this dinner…. Ugh. Am I being cheap or are they just out of touch with the reality for most people? Btw- it’s not that we CAN’T afford it, I just see it as a ridiculous waste of money.

2023.05.30 17:16 NickelTheWise WILDLIFE CH. 1-2 pt. 3

"I said to call them now, yeah! Fennel's really hur- I said stop her! WAIT!" "Hey, we've got our own here to look after, screw this shit, this job is fuckin' hexed, man!" "Back to the van, anyone who can make it!" "Get downstairs, fast!" One of the few leaders among the mob soldiers and scum present had tried to maintain order, but their boss had not stopped trying to get free and reach Kari's body. She'd almost made it, but they caught up and managed to hold her back. "BOSS! Boss, Fez is almost here, we can still tie her up and get outta here, just wait a little while!" Her snarling growl rose to higher pitch as she tried to tug free, spittle flicking from her muzzle in a mad rage, clutching at the socket she used to see out of. The stinging, horrible stinging had lit her entire skull up with a fury-painted hunger to reach Kari's prone body. "GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY WAY! If she's still alive... haaa, god... if she's alive somehow, we pig stick her until she's coughin' up chunks of her FUCKIN' heart, then we saw off the head... aaah, and get the fuck out of here! FUCK the reward, she... aaagh god.. let me go, I can DO THIS! S-sstop..." The remaining men tried to calm her down and help somehow, blood running freely from the heavy scratches and gouges inflicted. Kari's still body seemed to still be breathing a little and Fennel pulled her buck knife out, still breathless with anger as she stepped close on shaky legs. "Pity... guess I gotta unzip you a bit, wake you up so you can watch this... just take ONE of your eyes real slow and make sure you stay awake, THEN we... then we put out the other one, slice off your limbs and just... haaa.. just let the steets chew on your for a while." A clatter drew their attentions away from the prone woman, a corner of the unfinished lobby looking darker than it should. "Whoever's there, fuck off or die- in fact, no, just shoot this fucker." Said the leader goon, and the others pulled their pistols and fired into the corner until they needed reloading. In this moment, they caught sight of a pair of white eyes look out at them from the inky shadows, and then, a deep rattling voice with a single word as a being of pure midnight stepped closer, holding its arms up. "Burn." All at one, flames of alabaster like blank shapes in reality leapt up all over the place, shocking the assembled criminals and raising the heat to oven intensity. "Oh no! NO!" and more shots were taken, to no avail as they trailed off widely, the entity speaking in a terrible volume. "BEHOLD, ITHOTU, RUIN OF ALEXANDRIA, SON OF THE SCOURGE OF EDEN. ALL WILL BE CONSUMED AND GODS WORK SHALL BE ASHES!" it roared and released a blood-shattering howl, floating forward as the colorless flames leapt up higher. "RUN! grab the boss and run, hurry!" "NO! I have to kill her not... she.." Fennel's remaining vision swam suddenly and she tipped forward, almost falling facedown into the white blaze wreathing the unconscious assassin. From nowhere, Fez had appeared and had caught her body to hold her back, pointing to their rear to indicate an escape route. He managed to pick her up and fireman-carry her bloody body out, all while she tried to wake up, climb off the man she loved, and leap knife-first onto the snow leopard so that shadowed demon could drag them both down to Hell. They were out into the two escape trucks and the wolf's car, all which promptly took off towards the north to find the safehouse. The black being wreathed in flames stepped closer, peeking out of the window hole for a moment before turning and absorbing all the fire into its body with a long exhale of effort and collapse of its own onto hand and knees. Shape and coloration returned to its form; hooded jacket and denim pants with weathered shoes. "Good grief, that was close...", it said as it pulled the hood it wore back to reveal the mask-like pattern and bright yellow eyes of Tom Blackberry. Before anything else, he hurried over to Kari's body and looked over it with his mage sight, his grimace looking worse as he marked trouble spots. "What the hell are you made of, Tracy?" he thought aloud, checking problem areas thoroughly before even thinking of moving her. It was when he saw below her rib cage that he saw it, the seperation and wicked angle it held. "Oh no... oh shit.. Uhh... I gotta get you out of here and fast." he muttered and crouched low to get his arms under her. She wasn't heavy, but it was still a body and Tom grunted with effort before getting her up into his arms without too much jostling, marching out to a featureless parking area with nothing but trees and the fencing surrounding that. The raccoon knew that the police or worse would be here any minute, any second. Tom carefully laid her back down and climbed inside his mind to enact a strong and complex magic. "Dammit, only one thing for it... sorry, Tracy, you can kill me later for this." he said as he suffused magic to his fingertip, a sparkling blue energy gathering there, cupping her head with the other. He exhaled and closed his eyes, concentrating on the visual in his head, the memory of spotting her earlier, where she'd possibly looked and, most importantly, came from. Dream-fasting was not a dangerous magic, but required focus, and Tom often lacked this when times were dire. He inhaled sharply and touched her temple, closing his eyes to see more than anyone could.
A tidal wave of memories seized his body all at once and tumbled him violently thru a riptide of dizzying emotions. There were houses, stairwells, people, adults, groups of other children, physical trauma, firework emotions exploding wild across Tom's mind as it struggled to reach the surface. He felt elation, thrills, bitter regrets, passionate excitement from many kinds of first times, sadness at many things, outward and inwards. The positivity brought his own mind clarity enough to further his dive to memories more recent, but he found himself off the weightless crash of water and was now standing in a warehouse, looking around and smelling. A distant lit panel seemed to hold something he was thinking about needing, and he moved to hurry, only to encounter a slick surface and fall onto his back. He got up fast, blinking on his mage sight, only to gasp and take in the whole room. Blood, dead people, knives, guns, bullets and casings, all of them heaped into a humanoid shape sitting with in an easy repose, the head veiled in shadows or stains, impossible to tell. Tom ran for it as fast as he could, looking ahead now to see an old house his mind refused to recognize no matter how he tried. They were in there, he had to save them, he knew it. The massive corpse golem began reaching for him, emitting a low hollow scream that was growing louder. Tom was much shorter now, but he reached the Door, stumbling into the hallway that led to his main garden. A giant hand tore thru the unseen ceiling and groped madly for him. He cried out and crawled out of the way, running towards his own room as the howling sound grew so loud, it began to hurt.. the door wouldn't open! He slammed into it again and again, still in the form of a little raccoon boy, tears filling his eyes as the hand barreled towards him, and then CLICK! it opened, and he dove inside to land face first onto cold earth and grass, amidst tall trees now. He turned and saw the hand of the slain and the half-built apartment complex, and two people in the distance, one looking right at him--
Tom's eyes slowly stopped shining sky-blue and slowly eased back to yellow. He had fallen asleep sitting up, and felt the dried tears at his cheeks. He turned to look at the unconscious snow leopard. "Sky and stars... just who are you, Kari?" he said, the memories fresh as yesterday in his mind. It would wear off within a day, but he had bigger things to worry about. A quick frisking of her person found the car keys and, even better, her phone. The raccoon hesitated for a moment before turning it on and sighed in relief. No lock, plenty of power, and a 5G connection of all things. He pocketed these things, and lifted Kari up now, his mind and senses still shaking off the somatic connection of the magic. He closed one eye and concentrated on two things: his own appearance, and the direction he'd seen, only backwards. The car was quickly located and the feline woman was carefully laid across the seats. After some tight securing over her body with the seatbelts, he climbed in, adjusted the seat, and started the Harper up, trying to calmly set things up with the phone. He cleared his throat and licked at dry lips before hitting the Tekster icon. "Ok, Tekster, go home." No response, so Tom waited and tried again. "Tekster, home." he said emphatically. Still no reaction, and the panic was prickling at the back of his throat now. "Tekster, navigate home! Tekster, respond." Silence, the kind that crushes the will to live, but he calmed down and looked closer. It was the right icon, the mic was showing a wavelength. "Tekster." The wavelength wiggled mutely and Tom furrowed his brow. "Hold on, I didn't... oh WAIT a second!" he barked, going to the small top menu. It was set on silent, and he changed it to full volume while setting his own impatient growl even higher. "You are certifiable, you know that?" the raccoon shouted at the knocked-out assassin in the back seat, "You're CERTIFIABLE! TEKSTER, TAKE ME HOME, FOR FUCKS SAKE." [Okay, finding directions for.. Nome.. Alaska, Twin Lakes. Would you like me to--] The angered yelling and hollering was muted by the windows, but still fairly audible to the indifferent would outside of car as it pulled off down the access road and towards the marked destination. It was almost an hour later that he'd managed the six mile trip into the forest and up the special path, somehow managing to find her house, park the car, and begin to carefully extract her. Her breath wasn't coming as fast now, and Tom laid a palm gently to her chest. The pulse was faint, far apart, and lessening. Fear chased adrenaline thru his body, and the limp woman now seemed nearly weightless in his grasp "We gotta get you upstairs, get these wounds looked at!" he said aloud, not caring if she woke now, "Stay with me, Kari, you're almost home safe!" And, with one firm push against the opened door, they were inside and he was heading upstairs one foot at a time, nearly cratering the floor with each heavy efforted step.
Time seemed to creep by in her mind, an anaesthetic tiptoe of seconds into minutes into hours, and incremental moments beyond. She had been dreaming off and on about things; flying, swimming, feeling like she was stoned, or when the time she got lost when the house was being negotiated on... fleeting visuals of her parents. It was a strange world she was occupying, pieces of everything she'd known, all while her body felt stiff and itchy as she moved. It was sometime around remembering her school that she became aware of the effervescent sound of an electric guitar playing somewhere. She went peeked into Gulliman's classroom, only to find it wasn't there anymore, replaced instead by long, comforting fields of tall grass, its color that relaxing darker shade of green. She walked out into it, feeling as though strands of her were being snagged on the vegetation and drifting out of her, pleasantly pulling away who she was to replace it with the snow leopard as she currently felt. Her clothes and pelt peeled away, leaving a skinless nightmare of a living visual of the bodily systems to come up next to the source of the shapeless music. Tom turned at looked her up and down, grinning a little as he kept playing "Hm, nice gastrocnemiusi, good tone." he said. "Well, of course they are, I don't do lunges for nothing." she replied, looking at her own hands for a bit, and the curious motion of the muscles and bones and ligaments. Each pulse of her heart was tangible all over her body. "Am I dead?" Kari asked after a moment. Tom shook his head, switching to block chords. "No, you are asleep, but when you wake up, it'll all come back to you." Kari sat down, looking over the grass peacefully for a minute or so, but she suddenly got back and started looking around. "Wait a minute, I got knocked out! I fell-- the fight! I have to wake up." "And you will, right after you promise me something." She silently looked him over for a moment. "Promise what? I have to go, they're... I THINK THEY'RE IN MY HOUSE!" she shouted, checking her body for a weapon. "Oh shit, I-- KARI JUST PROMISE YOU WO-Ohhhh!" She had already vanished, and the dream began to fade all at once. Tom rubbed his face with a tired sigh, feeling himself melting back into reality beyond. "She's gonna be mad." he said plainly, leaving the place behind for now.
Her eyes snapped open and she felt like three people were sitting on her. Sight rapidly adjusted to the semi-darkness of the room, only lit from the banker's lamp on her desk, and she looked around to only see the raccoon, waving placidly at her and sitting in her chair. "What's happening? How did I get here, why can I barely move, was it a stun gun or something? I hit the ground and blacked out, what happened to- mnnhh?!" Tom had pressed a finger to her lips with a soft shushing sound in an attempt to ease her nerves, but she locked eyes on his and let out a guttural growl. "I will bite it OFF." "Okay! Right, sorry, that was to calm you down, just a bit to recollect, is it working?" "Nooo!" she fired back incredulously, still trying to move. Kari paused suddenly and checked under her sheet to notice only the barest details her body could offer, and her temper redlined again. "OHHH, you are DEAD MEAT, asshole! C'mere, get... I swear, you'll- nggh!" the assassin tried again and again to move more than her hands and head, but it was like her limbs and torso weighed a ton each; she could barely flex her fingers to make a fist, though she dearly wished to use one and then some. "Look, you, I'm gonna work up the strength to get back up and vivisectify you, so before that happens, you'd better start explaining, it will make an exquisite epitaph, I'm sure." The bloodlust coming off her was nearly suffocating and Tom cleared his throat a bit to bide time on where to start. Finally, he exhaled and tried to sum up. "Without getting too into it, I can use magic." he said in plain tones. Kari sneered, laying her head back down. "Great, I've been immobilized by a hippie." "No no, I mean it, here-", and Tom snapped his fingers to produce a single ball of flame as big as a cherry and in the flickering shape of a teardrop. Kari's eyes widened, then began to scan his arm. "Alright, I seen this bit before, where's the fuel line and the mechanism." "Kari, it's the real deal, I could make one much bigger, but this room of yours is... well, it's a mess!" He wasn't wrong. She strained again and again, trying to sit up, but Tom talked her down. "Easy there, you're gonna have to stay in bed for another nite or so." "Anoth-- what? When was that battle, how long has it been." "About a day and a half. I've been healing your body after it was rather grievously brutalized in that fight." Her head started to swim at all the details and updates, but one fact poked out in her mind. "...how did you learn my real name." she demanded, rather than asked. Tom held up his left hand, the aura of dark blue magic covering it in backlit neon indigo. "Do you remember when you passed out from the impact?" "I'm starting to, yeah. I went down rough and must've rang my bell pretty hard to get taken out of the fight." Tom got up to move around the room. "Well, in addition to probing gently into your memories to find your keys and home, I was awash in many other memories, and that was the name people called you." The more she heard, the less it made sense. She tried to give the right questions a press, experiencing her own brain whirlwind. "We'll leave the trust issue for later, when I can make sure of it physically, but why not just shake me awake, it's not hard." Tom closed his eyes, opening them again to reveal the yellow shafts of light from his mage-sight, getting an honest gasp of surprise from her. "Sorry, I'll just-" Blink. "-turn those off. I have special sight that allows me to see many things, including thru flesh." "But not clothes?" she asked, her ear flicking angrily. "... well, I can, okay? I'd never think of abusing that side of the power." "Heaven forbid." she grunted, losing a bit of the anger, but still irritated and deeply confused, "So, why the eyes?" "You looked like someone ran you over with a bus and there was this big tear in your clothes anyways, I saw the body armor." Her mind went back to the question. "And this has to do with you not wanting to jostle me to wake me up HOW?" she asked in mild sarcasm. "I was getting to that," he replied, lacing his fingers and leaning elbows on his knees with another exhale, "See... in order to apply my healing magic, I've had to learn baseline understanding of some bodily systems- cardiovascular, muscle, skeletal, basic shit." Kari was watching him with more attention now, still unbelieving about magic really existing. "Go on." she said, since he was seeming hesitant. "Well, 4th lumbar had pretty much nearly separated in the impact, along with hairline fracturing along the 6th and 7th. Kari, you couldn't move or feel anything I'd have done to wake you up because *you couldn't move or feel anything,* at least below your neck." The air went very still for the moment, the snow leopard staring at the fan above slowly rotating. Part of her training had involved electroshock doses to make the most of a partially paralyzed situation, but that sensation was different from when she'd fallen. She'd felt encased, latent motion in her muscles instantly become zero, a wide-awake bodily slumber. It sank in slowly at first, then pushed in hard all the way. She had been paralyzed, from the neck down, almost a brain in a jar. She would've been taken by those gangers by now, buried under horrible experiences before facing execution by the Bear himself. She felt a touch of hyperventilation coming on, but managed to calm her pulse and breathing. "So, that is what you are trying to fix in me, with your healing magic?" she asked finally. Tom nodded, looking up from staring at the floor for a while. "I mean, it's practically all done, and it was careful, gradual, continous work, almost six hours of it total, with two and half being near-continuous." He didn't mean to yawn here, but he did. "Luckily, your skull was fine, just had a contusion from where you thwacked it. See, neuro damage is wh-" "I'm sorry to cut you off, but you said your name was Hugo when we first met, that can't have been your real name." Tom's ears wiggled a little in confusion, then shrugged with a smile. "Well, I could say the same for you, Tracy. No, my name's Tom, Tom Blackberry, but my middle name IS Hugo." "Tom, there's a wastepaper basket by my desk," she began, scooching up into a sitting position slowly, miraculously to the biomancers eyes, "Take the bag out of it, put in the one below it, and bring it here quickly.. I'm going to be sick." He darted over to follow these instructions fast, and was back in record time with the lined bucket. "Here, think you can hold this yourself?" he inquired encouragingly. Kari knit her brow for a moment and began to lift her arms, both feeling like they were weighed down with 50 lbs. of unmixed concrete. They slowly raised, zombie-like, and accepted the container just in time as her breathing hitched and she vomited raggedly into it, pausing a moment before heaving again and laying back limply, handing it back to him slowly. "Okay... okay, I think that's got it, I don't feel sick anymore." She went on to ask for a water bottle on her desk to gargle and rinse her mouth out before deflating completely. "That's all I've got, sorry." "Hey, no no, you've made remarkable time in recuperating. I can keep healing you a little more tonite, once I get this removed." and he carefully held up the basket. "Downstairs, kitchen, under the counter by the fridge," the snow leopard instructed, "And bring up a can of Purple Burpler with you, my stomach is doing flip-flops." "Sure thing, be right back." These instructions were followed too, and he brought two sodas instead, backing into the room. "Here, hope you don't mind-- ooh." Kari was completely passed out, snoring lightly with her head turned at an odd angle. The raccoon grinned a little and went to get her situated, then took a seat in the office chair to keep a vigil on her, just in case. It was almost 4 by the time he finally fell asleep, and when this happened, Kari's eye flashed open and she nimbly, silently got out of the bed and tiptoed carefully to a second backpack she had hidden. "I hope he isn't mad about this." she wished quietly, pulling a roll of Kong Tape and glancing at him over her shoulder, "But if he's seen my memories, then he knows I can't take chances."
