2023.05.30 03:16 HandStitchedBody Resources related to the May 31, 2013 El Reno Tornado

With the upcoming 10-year anniversary of El Reno May 31, 2013 here are some links to videos and articles about or related to this event, with a focus more on the science, as well as footage links so they can all be in one place for anyone looking. This is by no means remotely exhaustive, and will not include the numerous documentaries or news articles about this event. Rest in peace to the eight people killed by the tornado and the many others who died due to storm related flooding. Five of the eight killed by the tornado were storm chasers. Three were veteran chasers Paul Samaras, Tim Samaras and Carl Young and the others were amateur chaser Richard Henderson and another unnamed chaser who was only discovered later to have been chasing that day through the work of the El Reno Survey project. You can read a post about that by Skip Talbot here.
Overview NWS page on the tornadoes and flooding event of May 31st-June 1st, 2013 Wikipedia page
Some Papers/Posts Crowdsourcing the El Reno 2013 Tornado: A New Approach for Collation and Display of Storm Chaser Imagery for Scientific Applications: This is a paper about the amazing El Reno Survey project and it has many other linked papers in it. Other papers have been written since on the non-descending nature of tornadoes. Houser, Tornadogenesis (part 1) and Tornadogenesis (part 2) are a few. Anticipating Deviant Tornado Motion Doppler Radar Observations of Anticyclonic tornadoes in Cyclonically Rotating, Right-Moving Supercells- Has more information and analysis of the multi-vortex anti-cyclonic tornado that occurred in the rear flank gust front of the parent supercell towards the end of the El Reno track.

A couple writings/discussions about the final rating Chuck Doswell's EF Scale Rating's Brouhaha and More on the EF-Scale Controversy Old Stormtrack thread that Jeff Snyder participated in. Both this thread and Doswell's writings above were from 2013 so other things have since been gleaned from this event, but both contain most if not all of the more informed reasons for the argument around the rating. Snyder wrote the paper linked above about considerations for using mobile radar in determining tornado intensity the following year. Adding the Current Proposed Revision to the EF Scale since a lot of those more organized discussions seemed to have stemmed from this event.
(note: I enjoy the science involved in aspects of the rating, but personally find the ratings themselves boring and uninformative as they merely simplify something very complex into a metric (that then is reduced even further into wind speeds) that a lot of times just seem to operate as a function of competition and/or morbid destruction allure. In general reducing everything involved in a tornado to a static thing with defined borders and simplified properties isn't helpful in understanding all the forces themselves or in understanding the complex way those forces interact with everything around them. I recommend reading the damage survey and discussion links above to help understand the reasoning given for this particular rating and the science of the considerations around radar indicated speeds and tornadic intensity along with some more well thought out arguments against the rating this event was given. If for no other reason than to move away from more common subjective-bias based arguments ("i know a huge EF5 when i see one" "obviously from the footage it was a massive wedge EF5 world destroyer") and in to more informed discussions if they must happen.)
VIDEO
Synced: El Reno Sync and El Reno Sync. Neither of course contain all the footage but are especially good to watch just so you can see how radically different it looked at different times depending on where the person was. The second one has a minor sync error that is noted in the pinned comment. Definite major acknowledgement for these syncs goes to the El Reno Survey Project and their Tornado Environmental Display (which sadly seems to no longer function).
Footage: A lot of people's footage can be found on the El Reno Survey Participants page by clicking on the links under the video column, so i won't link those here. Some participants aren't listed or their footage isn't linked and others may not have participated or have posted additional footage so I'll link other unlisted footage I am aware of below. Also note that Pecos Hank's footage is listed under his name (Hank Schyma) in the above link. Jim Bishop, Reed Timmer (Other footage from him can be seen by looking up Tornado Chasers S02E11-12), Dan Robinson, Allan Gwyn, Brendon Lindsey, Skip Talbot, Melanie Metz and Peggy Willenberg, George Kourounis, Stephen Barabas and Justin Hoyt, Mark Imes, Jason Weingart, Justin Drake and Simon Brewer, Jared Stevenson, Brad Hannon, Derek Watson, Greg McLaughlin and others, Bobby Hines, David Demko and Heidi Farrar, Robin Tanamachi, Daniel Dawson, Greg Johnson and Ricky Forbes and Peter Slack (behind-the-scenes), various Mike Bettes and TWC footage can be found on youtube as well as various documentaries on Tim Samaras, Paul Samaras and Carl Young.
Analysis
NWS Norman's Lessons from the most dangerous tornado in storm observing history Skip Talbot's essential Safety Lessons from El Reno Convective Chronicle's El Reno, OK May 31, 2103: A Case Study (haven't watched this yet but everything else they do is brilliant so I'm sure this is too. They use a lot of the papers I've linked above in the PapePosts section as primary resource, so recommended for folks who prefer watching/listening to reading)

Additional: NWS roundtable put out today discussing the tornadoes on May 19, 20 and 31st of 2013
Again, this is by no means exhaustive and if you have suggestions to add to the list I'm happy to. I'll try and update this post with other things that may come out in the next couple days that might be of particular interest, like the upcoming NWS Norman StoryMap. If there are any issues with any link let me know.

SPC Day 1 Convective outlook enhanced (5/26/23)
AM CDT Fri May 26 2023
Valid 261630Z - 271200Z
...THERE IS AN ENHANCED RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING OVER PARTS OF SOUTHEAST NEW MEXICO AND WEST TEXAS...
...THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS THIS AFTERNOON AND EVENING FROM EASTERN COLORADO INTO EASTERN WYOMING AND SOUTHEAST MONTANA...
...SUMMARY... A couple of tornadoes, very large hail to 3 inches in diameter and severe thunderstorm winds of 60 to 70 mph are possible this afternoon/evening across southeast New Mexico and west Texas. Large hail and a few severe gusts will also be possible from eastern Colorado to southeastern Montana.
...Eastern NM/West TX... Morning surface analysis shows a remnant outflow boundary from overnight storms has pushed southwestward across eastern NM, with the boundary and low-level moisture banked against the Sacramento Mountains. Visible imagery shows that the low clouds should slowly erode through the early afternoon, leading to a corridor of backed low-level winds, considerable moisture, and moderate CAPE from east of ABQ into southeast NM. Also, water vapor loop and model guidance may indicate a subtle mid-level shortwave trough over south-central NM that will overspread the area helping to encourage convective initiation.
All available CAM solutions develop widely scattered supercells by mid-afternoon along this corridor. Forecast soundings show steep mid-level lapse rates and sufficient bulk shear for organized supercells capable of very large hail. Hodograph shapes enlarge after 00z as the nocturnal low-level jet strengthens. This may encourage the development of a couple tornadoes as the storms track southeastward. Similar to the last several days, isolated but intense storms may persist well after dark and spread into west TX.
...Eastern CO/WY and southeast MT... Strong heating is occurring today from the foothills of central CO northward into eastern WY and southeast MT. Dewpoints well into the 50s, combined with cool mid-level temperatures (-12 to -15 at 500mb) and steep lapse rates will provide a favorable environment for scattered afternoon thunderstorms. Deep-layer vertical shear is not very strong, so organized multicell and only isolated supercell structures are expected. Nevertheless, large hail will be possible in the stronger storms throughout this area. Some clustering and upscale growth may also result in damaging winds as this evening.

SPC Convective day 1 outlook upgraded to enhanced. (5/24/23)
Day 1 Convective Outlook NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 1128 AM CDT Wed May 24 2023
Valid 241630Z - 251200Z
...THERE IS AN ENHANCED RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS PARTS OF EASTERN NM AND NORTHWEST TX...
...SUMMARY... Scattered severe thunderstorms are expected across the southern High Plains vicinity from 4 PM to Midnight CDT. A few intense supercells are anticipated and will be capable of very large hail. The threat for a few tornadoes should peak between 6 to 9 PM CDT and severe wind gusts between 8 to 11 PM CDT.
...Eastern NM and west TX... In the wake of an MCS last night, a residual outflow boundary extends northwest from central TX and has become more diffuse near the South Plains and east-central NM border area. Richer boundary-layer moisture has been displaced southwest of the outflow, with upper 50s to mid 60s surface dew points common across the Permian Basin and Lower Pecos Valley. There will be gradual advection of this moisture to the north-northwest along the eastern NM/northwest TX border area. With very steep mid-level lapse rates of 9-9.5 C/km sampled by the 12Z MAF/ABQ soundings, relatively large buoyancy for the High Plains is anticipated at peak heating with MLCAPE from 1500-3000 J/kg.
Scattered thunderstorms are most likely to develop in the late afternoon to early evening in/off the Raton Mesa vicinity, with more isolated activity expected south across eastern NM into the Trans-Pecos. While some weakness in the hodograph is expected around 700 mb, greater low-level curvature and speed shear above 700 mb relative to the past few days will yield a more elongated and relatively straight mid-upper hodograph. This should yield several discrete splitting supercells. Given the rather favorable CAPE/lapse rate environment, very large hail and potential for a few tornadoes appear increasingly probable. Storm-scale interference and eventual amalgamation of supercells, along with an evening increase in the low-level jet, should result in upscale growth and an increasing threat for severe wind gusts during the latter half of the evening. A southeast-moving MCS should emanate from the southwest TX Panhandle and northwest TX region, likely tracking near the outflow boundary from last night's MCS before weakening overnight. ...Northern Great Basin to eastern MT... While a broad upper trough persists over the West, multiple embedded vorticity maxima will rotate north-northeast across the northern Great Basin to northern High Plains areas. These will aid in scattered to widespread thunderstorm development later this afternoon. Buoyancy will remain weak (except over eastern MT) and deep-layer shear will be relatively modest, especially with eastern extent. Sporadic strong to locally severe wind gusts should be the primary hazard, with a secondary threat for isolated marginally severe hail.
...South/central FL... A diffuse front across central FL, and local sea breeze boundaries/collisions farther south, will again support scattered thunderstorms this afternoon. The stronger surface heating and larger MLCAPE will be confined to along and south of the front. Relatively cool mid-level temperatures near -11 C at 500 mb per 12Z MFL/TBW soundings should compensate for weak/weakening upper flow. Isolated strong-severe outflow gusts and small to marginally severe hail will be possible in the more robust clusters.

SPC day 1 Convective outlook tornado risk area has expanded a little
Convective Outlook AMEND 1 NWS Storm Prediction Center Norman OK 0938 AM CDT Thu May 11 2023
Valid 111300Z - 121200Z
...THERE IS AN ENHANCED RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS PARTS OF OK AND KS...
...THERE IS A SLIGHT RISK OF SEVERE THUNDERSTORMS ACROSS THE LOWER MS VALLEY...
AMENDED FOR LOWER MS VALLEY
...SUMMARY... Scattered severe thunderstorms are expected this afternoon and evening across parts of the Great Plains centered on Kansas and Oklahoma. The greatest threat for at least a couple strong tornadic supercells should exist across central Oklahoma between 5 to 9 PM CDT. Isolated severe storms including a couple of tornadoes are possible across the Lower Mississippi Valley.
...Central to southern Great Plains... A pronounced mid-level low over the Raton Mesa will gradually weaken as it drifts into the central High Plains through tonight. This weakening trend will result in a moderate LLJ response this evening into tonight with pockets of 30-45 kt 850-mb winds. Attendant surface cyclone will still diurnally deepen as it similarly drifts from the Raton Mesa into southwest KS today. The dryline will mix into western OK and arc south-southwest into the Edwards Plateau. A north/south-oriented inverted trough/quasi-stationary front will extend north to the western Dakotas.
Dual corridors of thunderstorms are ongoing across a part of southeast CO immediately north of the low and lingering farther southeast near the northwest TX/southwest OK border. This latter area is expected to diminish through midday, resulting in the focused ascent region over southeast CO to spread east into western KS. Low-topped supercells will become increasingly probable midday to early afternoon within a marginally buoyant environment initially. A smaller area of supercell development may also form in the wake of this activity near the CO/KS border later in the afternoon and yield a persistent severe threat into early evening.
A more volatile supercell environment should develop ahead of the dryline in the western to central OK vicinity. A pronounced gradient in MLCAPE is likely by late afternoon to early evening as the most robust boundary-layer heating post-dryline occurs in TX, while a plume of richer moisture advects north ahead of it. This should support MLCAPE approaching 1500 J/kg near the OK/KS border to around 3500 J/kg along the Red River.
While a 500-mb jetlet over the southern High Plains will be in an overall weakening state, its favorably timed eastward translation across the dryline should support sustained supercells. Upper-level wind fields will weaken with height and the bulk of hodograph structure will consist of enlarged curvature from 0-3 km. This suggests supercells should tend towards an HP character with a slow-moving cluster type evolution, especially with southern extent into north TX. Guidance has a bit more consistency with a moderate increase in low-level flow this evening, supporting a strong tornado threat with the most intense supercells over central OK. A small MCS/embedded supercell cluster will probably persist into eastern OK before eventually weakening overnight.
...Lower MS Valley vicinity -- Updated... A low-amplitude convectively induced shortwave impulse over the Ark-La-Tex will gradually shift east towards the TN Valley through tonight. With stronger boundary-layer heating expected towards the central Gulf Coast, increasingly broad convective development is anticipated into the afternoon ahead of this impulse. Modest deep-layer shear will likely prevail across much of the region. Still, a few transient supercells and some multicell clustering will offer a threat for a couple of mostly brief tornadoes, along with sporadic damaging wind gusts and marginally severe hail into early evening.

2023.05.11 02:36 chefslapchop [Mega Thread] Severe Weather Likely Thursday, May 11th, 2023

Alright, today's the day. Still looking at severe weather impacting the majority of the state and unfortunately all high population density areas. If you're able, start your preparations now for this evening. If you're new to the state, make sure you're aware of where the safest place in or near your home is well before this evening.

Storms alternating between west and east moving? Also seeing some east moving cells crashing with west moving cells. Interesting flow pattern
Anyone know what causes such erratic flow patterns? This is over Colorado using using KPUX station and these storms are forming fairly close to the Rockies. Storms closer to the mountains seem to want to move towards the mountains (west) and vice versa. Captions on images.
Mountain Valley circulation maybe?
