2023.06.01 06:40 JealousNovel9713 Books about financing black ops, how nazis stole wealth systemically, and the Operations of Rebels in the DRC
I am autistic, so please bare with me on the odd title. It's difficult for me to explain what I am looking for here.
I have been trying to find books that cover something I don't see much but a lot of media has it in the background.
Like in Mass Effect 1, you can talk with someone who does financial engineering to help the Shadow Broker.
Or for more real-life examples: how the CIA supposedly operates through NGOs, how did the Black Hand in Serbia actually work on an organizational level (did local Serbian politicians support them?), how does the corruption operate in some small mining town in Montana, etc. Of course, I don't need literal answers to these, just hope it shows the ideas I am trying to get to.
One of the closest things that touched some of what I am looking for is Andor. But a lot of that was outright covert operations. However, Luthen establishing networks, Mon connecting with banks, the administrative meetings of imperial agents, etc. is what I am after.
While I am fine with some covert ops stuff, what I am mainly looking for is understanding the financial, administrative, and bureaucratic infrastructure behind political intrigue, black ops, corruption, crime, genocide, etc.
The book can be non-fiction or fiction, textbook or casual.
Also, I get some of this is broad. Look, I am after anything that can give me an ounce of this. I don't need something that hits everything, just like I can enjoy Andor when it was still heavily about the direct covert ops.
[Note, I get a feeling people might recommend Dune. I have already read Dune, so no need. But it's also NOT what I am looking for. Dune doesn't quite hit what I am after. It's too actiony and not enough intrigue or true talks about how the financing of CHOAM works. Like, I literally read the minutes for the HUAC committees, and that is closer to what I am after in a sense.]

2023.06.01 06:40 orig_cerberus1746 What would be the best eGPU solution for a Alienware 15 r2
Hello. I have an alienware 15 r2, and although it's a laptop from 2017, I can use it just fine for everything, making games, playing games, coding, modelling, well, anything...
Hell, I was used to do those things in a 10 year old dell laptop. I just got the alienware, used, because my cat dropped the dell to the floor
But the goddam 2gb VRAM is a bottle neck that is tough to go trough considering I want to study AI, and to study AI it's good to have at least 8gb VRAM.
Otherwise, everything is perfectly fine.
But the real problem, that I can see at least to solve the issue is... It seem like this notebook supports almost all the options for eGPU that I can look up online, thunderbolt 3, m.2 and a... Alienware eGPU...? That's what the odd port by the the HDMI is for?
Anyway, what would be the pros and cons of each? It seem like here in Brazil the thing that is the most easier to get is the m.2, and considering this notebook has two m.2 and I don't need another SDD because I already have a SSD in the SATA port it would be an option.
Does it block a lane tho... I don't know, would the SSD in the sata stop working because of it? no clue. And if someone knows the answer that would be nice.
However, thunderbolt is just a cable that I can connect and disconnect, and since I use this laptop in my bedroom too, it would be preferable, but... When I try to search for thunderbolt solutions. I can only find stuff from China or quite expensive solutions that are almost the cost of the GPU. And by that point I would prefer to just build a new computer from scratch.
And, of course, what would be the compatible GPUs for those solutions?
PS: Don't know if relevant, but software does not tend to be an issue, if I need to change source codes, compile packages, go trough configuration files of something to make things work, I can do that. PS2: I don't know how to solder things.

2023.06.01 06:34 PCisLife Help hosting my Unraid docker services through a VPS to bypass CGNAT.
Hi, I am trying to host multiple docker services such as Jellyfin on my network but I recently learned that I cannot host anything on my network because of CGNAT and inability to port forward on my cellular router. As a temporary solution I have been making the people that are accessing my services use Tailscale to directly connect to my Unraid server but I am trying to get around that now and would like the connections to be clientless.
- People recommended me to use a VPS along with a VPN tunnel to achieve this. This is what I have got setup so far. I want to use Tailscale because I already have everything setup and don't want to set everything up again with WireGuard (Don't have experience with that).
- Tailscale is configured on my unraid system and it is setup as an exit node.
- I setup a Ubuntu instance through Oracle Cloud and installed Tailscale on it, connecting my Tailnet.
- I added a ingress rule in Oracle for Tailscale (41641) and added the ports for my Unraid services (8096 for Jellyfin)
- I can successfully ping the Oracle server from my laptop on my Lan while connecting to Tailscale
- I am confused where I go from here. How do I begin accessing Jellyfin remotely through the VPS?
- While being connected to Tailscale on my laptop, I tried testing Jellyfin through the IP of my ubuntu (100.x.x.x:8096) but that does not do anything.
- Its not working while being connected directly through tailscale on my laptop so I assume that it would not work outside of my LAN either.
What do I have to do to get this setup to work? I'm really new to networking and this is overwhelming haha. Can anyone point me in the right direction? What am i missing? What am I doing wrong?

2023.06.01 06:33 gonegamin Sony AVR PS5 no 4K HDR - Something broke
So, I got a new TV (Samsung qn85q70aafxza). I was excited to finally use my ps5 to it's full potential due to my older TV not supporting it. I seem to have similar problems getting 4K/HDR to work on my PS5 and it lead me to enabling enhanced mode on my Sony STR-DN1080 receiver like
https://www.reddit.com/hometheatecomments/kntxhp/strdn1080_not_liking_playstation_5_for_4khd and other search results have said.
I seem to be getting a different problem and I don't know if anyone else got this. As soon as I switch my hdmi port to enhanced mode, the source comes on and off, Linear PCM displays and HDMI flashes on and off on the AVR display screen itself. I can't get the port to display the PS5 while in enhanced mode, and I have to switch to another source, just to get into the AVR menu, to switch it back to standard mode.
I know the cables are good (ps5 original, other cables support high speed, etc). What's even more interesting to me is I have my Apple TV on another source, and can display it in 4K HDR with no issue.
Has anyone experienced this? Any advice on how to fix it?
Thanks!

2023.06.01 06:32 John_MC_117 Will TB4 docks suffer from the same latency issues as a typical USB-C hub does when driving multiple ports simultaneously?
I know USB hubs suffer from latency due to the ports acting as repeaters, but I haven't seen anyone talk about this in the case of thunderbolt docks. Does this issue persist even in docks?

2023.06.01 06:29 CKCU X85K can't play audio from x265/x264 via hdmi normally?
Hello all. I recently bought the 2022 X85K 55''. Everything has been great, except when I connect my laptop to the TV via HDMI. The audio from x265/x264 mkv video files are abnormal in terms of sounding very distant/low and separate tracks. However, if I play the same video via an app wirelessly where the file is stored somewhere in another cloud server, the sound is normal. So it appears it's really the hdmi cable issue. However, changing cable or HDMI port doesn't help. Changing HDMI signal format to just "standard format" instead of say "enhanced format" via settings has no change. Sound is otherwise fine when playing back flac music or just play computer games. This is the weirdest thing I have ever run into. Don't recall Samsung 2020 TV has such issues. Anyone has seen this before? Thx.

2023.06.01 06:29 Amulet-2 Headed to Miami for a cruise but could use some guidance?
I’m goin on a cruise with the dock bein in Miami, I’m tryin to find a hotel in Miami that’s close to the port but also has a shuttle ( whether or not it’s free is not an issue). I’m fixin to get in the ship not super early but definitely not in the later hours. I wanna get on the ship, do my wellness check and have fun. I’m tryin to find a hotel under like 150, but I’m willing to go to 200 if I absolutely have to. And I’m tryin to only have to pay for like 2 nights; one before the trip and the one right after ( I get off the ship in the morning and have the whole day before I check in) is this even possible ?
( I used the “ education” tag cause I guess I’m trying to “ educate” myself ?)

2023.06.01 06:28 swartosd Inserts?
I feel dumb asking this so please be kind. I got a pair of Dune CXL Diesel boots a few weeks ago. They’re breaking in great, they fit great, I love them, everything feels great except for if I’m standing for a long time the bottom of my heel hurts. I was in the military and lived in combat boots for a year and a half while deployed. I’ve got other boots, I’m not a stranger to boots and don’t expect them to feel like sneakers but for some reason these boots hurt the bottom of my heels. Any recommendations for inserts that work well in these boots?

2023.06.01 06:22 Psychological_Mushie Humidifier humidity swing. Is this decent enough or is there a way to make it better/more consistent?
So I am running a 1 gallon humidifier bought off amazon with a OFF through MAX dial knob. I am using the AC infinity outlet plug that is plugged into a Controller 69 (Not Pro) with the humidifier plugged into the outlet plug. I have my setting for the Port set at 65% RH for seedlings. The Humidity has a swing of 2.4% RH. From 65.9% up to 68.3% RH. I am not sure of anyway to make it stay consistent at a certain RH, unless you guys know of a trick. Figured I would see if anyone knew of anything. I am assuming a 2.4% swing is not all that bad?

2023.06.01 06:22 Sic_Alpha Tdarr docker container fails when using NFS volumes
Hello,
I'm successfully using NFS volumes for many other containers, have for years now, but I cannot get it to work with the Tdarr container.
Here are the Tdarr entries for docker-compose.yml
#########################################
networks:
tdarr:
volumes:
tdarr_media: driver: local driver_opts: type: nfs o: addr=192.168.1.201,nolock,soft,rw device: ":/mnt/tank1/Home/MYUSEVideos/Tdarr"
services:
tdarr: container_name: tdarr image: ghcr.io/haveagitgat/tdarr:latest restart: unless-stopped security_opt: - no-new-privileges:true # network_mode: bridge networks: - tdarr - traefik_proxy ports: - 8265:8265 # webUI port # - 8266:8266 # server port # - 8267:8267 # Internal node port # - 8268:8268 # Example extra node port volumes: - $DOCKERDItdarserver:/app/server - $DOCKERDItdarr:/app/configs - $DOCKERDItdarlogs:/app/logs # - tdarr_media:/media:rw <- PROBLEM (NFS volume defined above) # - /nfs/MYUSEVideos/Tdarr:/media:rw <- PROBLEM (NFS mounted within host OS) - /dev/shm:/temp environment: - TZ=$TZ - PUID=$PUID - PGID=1000 - UMASK_SET=002 - serverIP=192.168.1.203 - serverPort=8266 - webUIPort=8265 - internalNode=true - inContainer=true - nodeName=MyInternalNode
#########################################
Spacing above got all messed up above when posting here, yml files has correct spacing.
If I uncomment either of these two, I get permission denied and Tdarr continer failes to create:
# - tdarr_media:/media:rw
results in:
ERROR: for tdarr Cannot create container for service tdarr: open /valib/dockevolumes/docker_tdarr_media/_data: permission denied
and
# - /nfs/MYUSEVideos/Tdarr:/media:rw
results:
ERROR: for tdarr Cannot start service tdarr: error while creating mount source path '/nfs/MYUSEVideos/Tdarr': mkdir /nfs/MYUSEVideos/Tdarr: permission denied
Both of the above errors are posted twice successively, which I thought is weird.
If I pass in this as the volume, it works just fine:
- /tmp:/media:rw
So I know it's the NFS volumes.
I'm using this exact setup for Handbrake, along with many other containers and it works just fine. Same UID, GID is being used, folders on NFS host have exact same owner:group and permissions.
ls -lha results from that folder:
drwxrwx--- 4 MYUSER MYGROUP 4 Dec 24 2020 Handbrake
drwxrwx--- 5 MYUSER MYGROUP 5 May 31 00:36 Tdarr
Handbrake is configured exactly the same, volume declaration, same UID, GID, same owner:group on the folder, same permissions on the folder, and it works just fine.
Why does the Tdarr container hate NFS?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Without the ability to use the NFS share for media, it effectively means I can't use this as the Docker server isn't really capable of hosting the files the way I have it set up.
Thank you!

2023.06.01 06:21 Fainman128 Battery Danger - Update 2 on 31 May 2023
This is an update (hopefully the last update!) in regard to the "Battery Danger" message I experienced. Here are the prior posts:
Original Post on 10 May 2023 Update 1 on 15 May 2023 BLUF: I now have the car back with a new battery. The EV Concierge is reimbursing my fuel expenses while I had the rental car (which was also taken care of).
Potentially helpful background: I traveled out of state to find & buy the Bolt EUV (with S&S and SC). I purchased the car in Feb 2023 and DCFC'd it 4 times on the drive home immediately after purchase. Since I've been home, I charged up to 80% nightly with the 32A / 240V charger that came with the car.
When this event occurred, I still had about 140 miles remaining even though the picture shows "Low".
What I learned when I picked up the car: The car was towed in, horn still going off, on 10 May 2023. The tech disconnected the negative on the battery to get it to stop and parked the car in the far corner of the lot. The next day, Thursday 11 May 2023, the tech saw error code
P0BBD (Hybrid Battery Pack Voltage Variation Exceeded Limit).
Apparently what happened here is the battery has
contactors and all of those disengaged as a safety mechanism when the car saw this code. The horn goes off - possibly with the hope of draining the 12V battery if no one is around. If this were to happen while driving, the assumption is you'd still get the notice and you'd slowly lose propulsion power - so you'd have enough time to pull over and gtfo.
Anyway - the tech followed diagnostics and a bulletin had him contact Technical Assistance Center (TAC) for further direction. TAC had him put together a report and scheduled the local field engineer to come out ASAP which ended up being Monday morning. The field engineer had a device that plugged into the engineering port (on passenger side) to stream data to engineers in Detroit. It was then decided a battery replacement would be the resolution and the bad battery would be carefully packaged, crated, and sent to LG.
When the new battery was installed, the coolant was also replaced and the battery was programmed remotely by the engineers in Detroit (I think).
The tech also put the car on their DCFC which performs an isolation test and rebalances cells. He said it's free to use and it wouldn't hurt to do it monthly (the battery doesn't need to be at a certain level - just needs room to charge).
Let's get nerdy: I got a copy of the diagnostic report it showed the following:
- Battery 1 & 8 @ 3.80V
- Battery 9 @ 3.85V
- The rest of the 32 batteries were at either 3.82V or 3.83V
He pointed out battery 9 as the outlier and said especially since it's in the middle of the pack so it's not near anything that would cause the increase in voltage.
I looked up how thermal runaway happens here are 3 possibilities:
- Overcharging: Charging a lithium-ion battery beyond its recommended voltage limit can cause the deposition of metallic lithium on the anode. This can create microscopic metal dendrites or "whiskers" that can penetrate the separator between the electrodes, causing an internal short circuit and leading to thermal runaway.
- Overdischarging: Discharging a lithium-ion battery below its recommended voltage limit can also lead to thermal runaway. Overdischarge causes the formation of copper or other metallic deposits on the cathode, which can cause internal short circuits upon subsequent charging.
- Elevated temperatures: Lithium-ion batteries are sensitive to high temperatures. Exposure to elevated ambient temperatures, excessive heat generated during charging or discharging, or external heat sources can increase the internal temperature of the battery. If the heat generated exceeds the battery's ability to dissipate it, a thermal runaway reaction can occur.
- This can happen on batteries with higher voltages because they will discharge faster (more watts / more heat) compared to the other batteries.
One of the key reactions that can occur during thermal runaway is the breakdown of the electrolyte. The electrolyte in a lithium-ion battery is typically a flammable organic solvent that contains lithium salts. When the battery undergoes thermal runaway, the high temperature can cause the electrolyte to decompose or vaporize, releasing flammable gases such as ethylene and propylene. These gases can further contribute to the heat buildup and increase the severity of the thermal runaway event.
As the temperature continues to rise, the decomposition of the electrolyte and other active materials in the battery can accelerate. For example, the breakdown of the cathode material, which often includes a nickel-based compound, can release oxygen. Oxygen can react with other battery components, such as the electrolyte or the graphite anode, resulting in additional heat generation and the production of more flammable gases.
The release of flammable gases, combined with the high temperature, can create a self-sustaining chain reaction within the battery. The heat generated by the exothermic reactions can further accelerate the decomposition of the electrolyte and other materials, releasing more gases and causing a feedback loop. This feedback loop leads to an increase in temperature, pressure, and the release of additional flammable gases, exacerbating the severity of the thermal runaway event.
In closing: I learned a lot and ordered an OBD reader from Amazon.
Bonus The tech informed me if I were to try to change my own 12V battery whenever it needs it, there are some contactors that disengage and make a noise when the negative side is disconnected (always remove the negative side first). When putting in the new battery, if the contactors don't re-engage, you may need to have it towed in.

2023.06.01 06:19 doggoesmeow Should Port Adelaide re-sign Ken Hinkley? Do they see who is out there with their current list?
Inspired by this:
https://www.sen.com.au/news/2023/05/25/david-king-forecasts-damien-hardwicks-next-coaching-move/ Port Adelaide having arguably the best young midfield in the competition would make them a very attractive option for coaching candidates. With Ken Hinkley out of contract at season's end, are they duty bound to see who else is out there regardless of what happens this season? (except for a premiership win)
Ken Hinkley is 11-years in and I believe is the longest tenured coach in AFL history to not reach a Grand Final.

2023.06.01 06:17 superseriousAVstuff Can't Connect SIMPL Debugger to VC-4
I'm trying to get a trial of VC-4 up and running on a virtual machine running on my desktop so I can try a few things out but I cannot for the life of me connect to the thing with debugger.
I installed the latest version (dropped yesterday) on AlmaLinux 8.7 and ran the hardening scripts. I can get to the web interface using https and login with the user I added. I have loaded a very bare-bones ethernet-only 4 series simpl program to it with just a handful of symbols. I have a couple rooms set up with simple room IDs (1234, etc.). The rooms show as "started" and I have enable debugging for each of the rooms, one at a time, to try to connect to them through debugger.
I've gone through the guide for adding a room in the address book in toolbox. I have tried generating a couple different tokens and plugging those into the address book entry. I'm leaving the port and path as default.
When I try to connect, it gives me an error right away, saying "The VC-4 server rejected the web connection due to one of the following:
-the address has an invalid room id (I'm using 4 digit numbers)
-the address has an invalid token (I've tried deleting and recreating, then modifying the address book entry to match)
-the room is not running (it is)
-the room is not in debugging mode (it is)
Any ideas to try? I don't know what I'm missing. I've tried from 2 different computers running debugger.

In the WebConsole website I set the ip to 0.ngrok.io and I tried setting the port to both 1234 and the port ngrok gave me but neither worked. Anyone know how.to use ngrok with WebConsole?
