A 39-year-old Florida man pleaded guilty Tuesday to selling hundreds of millions of dollars of counterfeit Cisco gear to unsuspecting schools, hospitals, government agencies, and the military.
According to the US Justice Department, between 2013 and 2022 Onur Aksoy, based in Miami, founded at least 19 companies in New Jersey and Florida and launched 15 Amazon and 10 eBay storefronts from which he peddled "Tens of thousands" of low-quality or faulty networking devices gussied up to look like new or official Cisco equipment.
The goods, imported from sellers in China and Hong Kong, were often loaded with pirated Cisco software and packaged within Cisco boxes bearing Cisco labels and stickers.
Aksoy's activities drew the attention of the Customs and Border Protection agency, which reportedly seized 180 shipments of counterfeit goods shipped to companies owned by Aksoy between 2014 and 2022.
Despite pressure from CBP and Cisco's lawyers, the Justice Department claims Aksoy did little to hide his activities and continued to import and then fraudulently sell counterfeit network equipment sourced from the same suppliers.
It wasn't until last June that Aksoy was arrested and charged - on one count of conspiracy to traffic in counterfeit goods and to commit mail and wire fraud, three counts of mail fraud, four counts of wire fraud, and three counts of trafficking in counterfeit goods.

I was an AV Engineer for about 4 years, I was fairly decent and always the go to guy in the company for networking and control system stuff. Unfortunately the pay and management sucked but the jobs were very fun and fulfilling for me.
I recently left and accepted a job as a IT Specialist because I’ve always wanted to be in IT (going to school for it and have been applying for years) but man now that I finally made it, I’m seeing how boring this stuff is. I have worked in a firm in India for almost 1 year and have resigned few days ago but when I requested my manager to shorten my notice period (which is of 2 months) for genuine reasons, manager said he can leave me early but as per my offer letter, if I opt for the choice of not serving the full notice period, I need to pay the company that many days of salary which I will not be serving. When I showed my offer letter to my HR and manager stating that there is no mention of notice period buyout, HR said then there is only 1 option, I have to serve for 60 days.
Also, my manager who is also my TL assigned me a new story the day I resigned and pressurising me to give my 100%. He is complaining the HR almost everyday and the HR is threatening me that she will terminate my employment and not give me experience/relieving letter. Kindly tell me is it possible for an employer to terminate an employee while being on notice period? Wouldn't it be an illegal termination as per the labour laws of India?

Background to the issue:

Reddit has been making changes.
Ahead of their IPO, they're trying to get their ducks in a row, but in trying to maximize their value to potential shareholders, they're cutting off massive avenues of value to moderators and users. * Reddit, without warning, cut off Pushshift's API access (The stated reason is no response--but given their pricing structure for 3rd party mobile apps, and the time frame Reddit gave third party apps, any response by pushshift would have almost certainly resulted in this same action) * Reddit is making a move to remove API access to third party apps and developers. It's no stretch that this move is motivated because after a number of years they're unable to compete in the mobile app space. So instead of 'git-ing gud' they're just shutting down competition. Apollo App Response, Rif Response * They said RES will experience 'minimal' impact and old Reddit will be preserved. In the words of the Toolbox devs, "[they are not impacted.] Yet (Toolbox is a great tool for moderation because moderating with Reddit's site tools alone is a pain), and similarly RES developers are not overly trusting. Similarly, the API once was safe * Reddit has laid off 5% of their staff
The above actions are presented with bias--because frankly I am biased and Reddit is presenting their reasoning with bias so please take both sides' explanations with a grain of salt. Or Crait's worth of salt. But I feel they are presented accurately enough for this post's purpose.

Why we care about these changes:

As a Moderator

There are a number of issues that a moderator has to deal with.
First and foremost, I volunteer to do this. Moderation can be a drain on my energy, and is a time sink. Losing efficiencies reduce my ability to moderate, and Reddit Inc is laughably behind.

• Reporting content as a moderator for admin review is an absolute pain, often a black box, there's at least three separate ways to report something instead of one consolidated form or three ways with parity across all three. The mechanisms have some overlap too. It's bad.
• Often the admin response is subpar. As a mod I get that, my responses are subpar as well, and often times purposefully subpar because you need to make a decision on some content and there's just only so much to go off of. But it's for the extreme cases that the subpar response becomes a problem, like when there's a clear botnet falsifying engagement, and I've highlighted 10 accounts in it, and highlighted the way to flag them, and only two of those get tagged as "actioned for ban evasion" and the other 8 are free to keep on posting. Identifying a botnet should be easy on the Reddit side, it's exhausting on mine. One of the ways to help flag this is groups like Pushshift, and loosing that means I either knowingly allow manipulation or I give up more volunteer time hunting manipulation down. (By the way the specific one I am being vague about was brought to my attention thanks to a user's report. If they didn't flag it I probably would have missed that botnet, small though it was, so I really appreciate those comments and reports).
• I cannot trust the admins. This isn't combative in nature, but it's because we have different goals. Often times they align, but sometimes our goals are at odds of each other. My goal is to try to make sure the communities I moderate are best able to thrive, and Reddit Inc's goals are to drive engagement and ad revenue. Usually, like when we get to do something fun like a great AMA, we get great community events and Reddit gets engagement and clicks. But long term, Reddit will always follow profit.

So these changes impact my workflow, and avenues to review and moderate content. And these are issues impacting our community. /Python is a great sub and great community. Compared to a lot of other subreddit we have relatively few issues.
Communities which are identity, political, or news in nature have to deal with so much more. There's a ton to manage, there's a ton of filtering for mental health and safety that is needed too. Reddit is getting there when it comes to a lot of features, but their implementation is slow. It's getting measurably faster as they restructure, but they're still catching up to third party apps.

As a reddit usePython developer

APIs are important. They're a wonderful gateway to programming, they help webpages serve information in a more lightweight fashion when webscraping would be costly (if you just need an upvote count, it's smarter to just make a call for than, then making a call for every asset a webpage renders. This gets a user what they need and isn't a burden on the site they're engaging with). APIs as a result both act as a great learning mechanism and as a way to keep from burdening the site as a whole.
No third party apps as alternatives makes it easier for Reddit to harvest data without pushback. And it makes it harder for users to customize their experience. This can be exceptionally important when it comes to communities which cater to important segments of the population, but segments which are so small that a profit focused organization would otherwise ignore.
One of the more notable communities that these changes strongly impact is /blind, and there's an explanation of these changes and their impact here. It's very probable that these issues will be quickly addressed now that they're in the public eye. But the underlying reality is that third party apps had been able to cater to users and communities and the Reddit app, with Reddit's stewardship, has failed to address accessibility at this level.

The Blackout

On June 12th a blackout has been purposed.
Many communities are praticipating, and as this post points out we're curious if we should join. The blackout is either to cover a two day span, or last until demands are appropriately addressed. (this distinction is on a community basis, and will probably depend on how reddit responds)
There are different ways to perform it, either set the sub to private or lock the sub so no submissions can go through. Setting the sub to private prevents all engagement in the sub, but also means that presenting a message to users about what is going on isn't possible.
I think it makes sense to keep the sub up and visible but to freeze it so no new posts or comments go through, but I'd like to hear your thoughts.

The Admins Response to the blackout

On 3) So many of those updates exist already in third party apps. So many of them are only getting attention this long into the Reddit app's lifespan because mods are making a stink about not moderating through the Reddit app. So especially for the rollout date of Sept. portions--I don't really believe it'll be executed well. And I don't want the mobile app on my phone. It's big, slow, and harvests a lot of data.
And when that post went live Reddit was breaking again.

Now being fair here, there absolutely has been a focus on improving modtools over this past year, but they're still wildly behind. It's.. uncomfortable to trust a site when they cut off the alternatives for profit. Once there's no competition there's no longer a reason to loose revenue on further developing these resources.
We were a part of the Reddit Talk platform development, and the admins we got to work with were lovely, and worked hard to greenlight the features moderators requested. A lot of those features were fleshing out the API so we could handle a Reddit Talk session in our workflows.
But after a while they shutdown Reddit Talk and that makes it difficult to trust long term product commitments from Reddit. Even if we get great admins who listen to feedback rolling out a product--they're not ultimately the ones who make the calls for the future.
The admin response to the threat of a blackout reaffirms their changes and makes a lot of future promises for moderation tools. They sound good but at best those features should have been here ages ago, and their presentation betrays a lack of focus or care for moderation tools until recently. That recent change is affirming to see, but looking at Reddit's track record it might just be a passing phase until the public eye is off of the company.

What does this mean to /Python

That is mostly my question to you.
There are some defined things:

• If we blackout, the sub turns off. No one can post or comment for a while, and we hope our added voice helps encourage Reddit to continue to allow third party apps.
• If we don't join the blackout, we can still hope but there's less weight behind it.

We don't normally join in on Reddit's protests. So this would be a new thing for our community--is this cause worth the loss in a few days of posts?
There is a post by another user asking this question and at present it is the second most upvoted submission in the past year. So there has been a lot of great talk already, but I need to ask this question here as well to be sure I'm listening to the community as a whole.

Schienenersatzverkehr means a section of your route is unusable and buses carry you between train stations around the impassable section.
This happened in 2014 when I took a train from Friedrichshafen to Nürnberg. Was it a one off? And DB realized the enormous stupidity or is it something that just happens because they are too inflexible to fix their contracts
Our trains rolls into the station 2 minutes late. And as we arrive we watch 2 empty buses drive off in disbelief. But not a problem, another bus rolls up 3 minutes later. We all jump on the bus shouting go, go, we can make our connections.
No says the bus driver. I have to wait for the next train and leave only at its (supposed ) arrival time. We were somewhat agitated. He explains:
The contracts were structured so that the bus company got a bonus if they were punctual. So in driving off empty if a train was late, and waiting for the next train even if full, the bus company stuck to contract and got their bonus.
The driver was not pleased, specially having to explain this daily to irate passengers. Plus what 1/2 conscientious driver would be pleased in letting down passengers so badly. Of course there were no DB personnel on site to explain, or better still report and fix the contracts. It would have been better if DB just said:
We will pay the bonus anyway. Just drive in whatever way helps passengers most.
I have always avoided Schienenersatzverkehr since. But a few years later in Austria a Schienenersatzverkehr was the only route. I thought: If Germans can mess up so badly what will the Austrians do?

Hi all! I've actually posted here before, but there has been a couple of updates, and now using a throwaway account and I've been feeling a lot worse these couple of days, so would appreciate any advice!
Basically, I'm an entrepreneur, and after a couple of years of burnout, my condition has significantly worsened two months ago, and I've been diagnosed with moderate to severe clinical depression. I've been having an indescribable feeling of sorrow, anxiety, apathy, helplessness and emptiness; in the first week of the whole episode, it was even hard to get out of my bed. For the past two months, whenever worked (or even just thinking about work), I would experience immense anxiety, fear and (sometimes) anger, as well as physical symptoms, such as massive headache, body tremors, and faster heart beats (and one time, almost hyperventilating). As a result, I've not been productive at work and in every sense of the word, dreaded it.
I've been taking some time off work, been in therapy and implemented new habits (living healthier, through exercise, diets, sleep, meditation), but recovery has not been linear (some days are better, some days are worse), and the anxiety and fear around work remains. The trauma around anything remotely related to work is real -- I still can't open/reply email, or think of anything/anyone around work at all -- all of these give me tremendous fear and anxiety. I've been totally offline for the better part of the last couple of weeks, but got an urgent update that a commercial deal we had been working on had fallen through, and it may have dire business consequences. It's hugely upsetting because I had hoped that the company (my business partner and the rest of the team) should be able to take care of these things without me, and it doesn't seem to be that way. Things at work are obviously worse now, and I won't be able to go back to work peacefully.
Right now, I'm just feeling a whole range of emotions -- sadness, anxiety, fear, helplessness, emptiness, anger and resentment. Maybe it's the depression speaking, but I've been thinking -- I've dedicated so much of my time, effort and personal resources into the company, and it seems that no one in the team (including my business partner) was as committed as me. At this moment, I want to prioritize healing, and even then, I'm not able to fully relax and recover. A part of me want to just abandon everything and focus on healing, but I'm too sad and anxious to even do anything remotely related to work.

I rarely post, but recently I've been reading some posts where people offer uplifting responses to strangers. It has been a source of comfort for me lately. At the moment, I feel overwhelmed and defeated, with a deep sense of loneliness. I want to express my emotions intelligently, as I am experiencing profound emotional wounds and a lack of direction in my life. This description reflects my current state.
The aspects that define me at this moment are a combination of permanent, temporary, cyclical, and circumstantial factors. I find myself in the deepest depression I have ever experienced in my 41 years of life. Considering my current circumstances and the metrics used to measure success, I feel like a complete failure. If one were to analyze my job history and performance, there were moments of incredible opportunities followed by brief success, only to be followed by utter failure. Similarly, if we were to evaluate my personal life in terms of social interactions, dating/marriage, friendships, and health, I would be considered among the lowest performers. It seems like my entire life has been marked by failure.
Furthermore, it seems as though the universe has singled me out for some special kind of punishment. For years, I have felt a sense of surrealism, where every decision or action I take inevitably leads to unfavorable outcomes. Every significant matter in my life has ended in prolonged consequences, worsened circumstances, or some form of material loss. I have missed out on numerous opportunities, chances for marriage and having children have slipped away, I am financially struggling, and I have very few friends apart from one in my former hometown of Chicago and another in Alaska. My spirituality and faith have also been deeply affected by the setbacks and obstacles I have faced, and I am dealing with all of this without the support of my estranged family.
My three best friends, my sisters, and I have not spoken in six years. I can't recall the last time I spoke with my brother, as he doesn't respond to my emails or texts. My mother is suffering from rapid-onset dementia, while my father has recently retired from a lifelong career as a doctor. Throughout my life, my family has systematically scapegoated me, starting with being labeled the black sheep. However, everything changed when I disclosed at the age of 27 that my brother had sexually and physically abused me as a child. Since then, life has been a constant battle against me. The universe seemed to shift its axis, and my life has never been the same. It is particularly disconcerting that my brother, a urologist by profession, is the perpetrator of such heinous acts.
My sisters, as research suggests, took sides between the "black sheep/fuckup/substance user" and the successful urologist. They accused me of lying, changing my story, waiting too long, claiming it was nothing, and even being jealous of my brother's life, which includes a mansion, a Porsche, wealth, and respect. Since I have accomplished nothing, they believe I fabricated drunken tales of childhood and only decided to reveal this ultra-specific story at the age of 27. I never imagined that I would lose my family in this way. It feels like I have lost my identity, purpose, support system, best friends, and confidants – my sisters. They have subjected me to the silent treatment, which my brother also employs, treating me as if I don't exist. My sister's last text message summed it up when she said that they don't get together to talk about me anymore because I don't come up in their conversations. It was the same sister who initially encouraged me to reveal the truth about the abuse but then betrayed me and twisted the narrative.
In my family, my case of sexual abuse was not an isolated incident. My father, a physician and at the time a pediatrician in Illinois, had a second case of sexual abuse and incest in his side of the family. His younger brother, the second oldest among seven siblings, also abused his own daughter, my cousin. He is also Dr. A few years before I disclosed my own abuse as an adult, my cousin trusted my father enough to disclose her abuse to him. Despite my father not knowing about my case at the time, he took no professional action to report the abuse committed by another doctor, his brother, who abused his now niece, and did nothing.During that same disclosure, my cousin admitted that her two brothers, who are also my cousins, had abused her as well. This meant that five members of her household, three of whom were abusing one child, were involved in these traumatic events. My father, along with his brother and siblings, did nothing legally to report these incidents. My uncle, the abuser, is now the president of a hospital in East Texas. So technically, my case was the fourth, following my uncle, cousin, and another cousin. One of those cousins is now a pastor of a small church community, while the other works for a former presidential candidate's company. As for me, I have been trapped in a cycle of failure to launch as an adult, mental health issues, and intermittent substance abuse problems for the past 20 years. And that's not even the end of it – the fifth case involves my cousin, who was arrested in a state capital where he worked as a therapist or counselor. He was arrested for filming his young neighbor through her window. I am aware of his arrest but do not have any information regarding the progress of his case or its resolution.
To put it all together, it is an intricate mess of narcissism, ego, power, control, and childhood trauma. I strongly believe I have developed complex post-traumatic stress disorder (C-PTSD) as a result of these experiences. In fact, I am certain that I have.
Fast-forward to the present, and I am writing this from a motel room, where there are too many details to recount from the past six months since my return from Montana. In a way, I followed the path of my other abused cousin – I left. However, I ultimately failed and had to return to a city near my parents, a city I despise. To add to my troubles, I was falsely accused of felony domestic violence soon after my return, further fueling my sense of failure and shame. My parents, upon hearing about the incident, made it clear that they wanted little to do with me. Speaking of Montana, my experiences and the year I spent there were truly nightmarish, to say the least. But that's a story for another time.
During the car ride to a hospital in a small town in the same county, my father and I had an opportunity for a discussion about the abuse. I wanted to understand why he did nothing in all five cases, why the eldest child seems to be targeted (true for my brother and cousin), why successful doctors are involved – including a pastor, a consultant, and now a urologist after the fact. Did he not notice the intergenerational pattern and his own parental negligence as a physician and a parent of adult children? I questioned why he took no action, why his behavior changed so drastically in the past three years, why he lied about his knowledge of nondisclosure agreements (NDAs) when he had used them for possible infidelity and had lied about private settlements. He even harassed me using the police, assassinated my character in our small town, and now charged me with striking him, resulting in false statements and allegations. As a consequence, my reputation has been tarnished while my father's remains pristine. We currently reside in a town where he practiced medicine, and the consequences for me are severe. Deep in my heart, I know that his post-arrest behavior towards me has been consistently inconsistent. He evades questioning, avoids contact and visits, and shows no signs of wanting a relationship. Instead, he guilt-trips me, shifts blame, engages in word salad and gaslighting, and pathologically lies.
As I sit here now, I wonder: What can one do in such a dire situation? There seem to be no options, no answers, no safety nets of money or emotional support, no motivation, and no joy – only the looming threat of a potentially harsh sentence. Even worse, my father has attempted to record my phone calls and offered me money not to hire a proper defense attorney or pursue litigation, just a week before I was supposed to accept a four-year adjudication plea as an innocent party. Then, when I decided to plead my innocence at the last minute during the trial, he abandoned me once again, signaling to me that money is somehow tainted. Regardless, it's gone now.
I apologize for unloading all of this on Reddit, and I understand that it may be quite depressing for others to read. However, I feel that I have reached the end of my fight, not against just one issue, but against a conglomerate of issues that have stolen my life and time, offering me nothing in return. I desperately need legal advice, emotional support, prayers, or any form of assistance. I find myself lost in a maze of confusion, where every turn I make is a miscalculation, distorted by backward perspectives and reflections off other elements. Over the past six weeks since leaving my job due to a problematic relationship with the owner, I have been living a transient and isolated existence in the dark corners of this wretched city. Hey guys! I have worked in a firm in India for almost 1 year and have resigned few days ago but when I requested my manager to shorten my notice period (which is of 2 months) for genuine reasons, manager said he can leave me early but as per my offer letter, if I opt for the choice of not serving the full notice period, I need to pay the company that many days of salary which I will not be serving. When I showed my offer letter to my HR and manager stating that there is no mention of notice period buyout, HR said then there is only 1 option, I have to serve for 60 days.
Also, my manager who is also my TL assigned me a new story the day I resigned and pressurising me to give my 100%. He is complaining the HR almost everyday and the HR is threatening me that she will terminate my employment and not give me experience/relieving letter. Kindly tell me is it possible for an employer to terminate an employee while being on notice period? Wouldn't it be an illegal termination as per the labour laws of India?
I have requested my manager and HR numerous times that I am leaving for higher studies, so please release me early since as a fresher I barely have any dependency in the team and it is difficult for me to work right now. I purchased a modest home last year. I managed to obtain the pre-approval prior to the rate increases. I recently secured new employment that tripled my yearly income. My new place of employment is slightly over an hour away from my current place of residence. This is where the complications begin.
I have been offered a higher-paid position within the company. It is Oilfield work and is very safety-sensitive. We operate semi-trucks that are on logbooks. We are only legally required to take a minimum of 8 consecutive hours off in a 24 hour period. During the winter, we will be called the minute that 8 hour reset is finished. We are on a 24 hour on call basis over a period of 15 days. The management at this place of work have seemingly been impressed with me so far. We have spoken of me taking a leadership role within the company, even though I have just passed my three month probationary period. They have brought up the concern of safety in regards to my commute time, citing that at LEAST 2 hours of my 8-hour period of off time is spent commuting to and from my place of work. They have strongly suggested that I relocate to a residence that is within reasonable commuting distance. They have also stated that I should be relocating for my current position in the company, as I am subject to the same responsibilities. I completely agree with them on this basis. Often times, we are awake for more than a 24 hour period of time. I'm typically exhausted on my commute home and I do not feel as though I am being safe returning home.
With my current residence, I am on a fixed-rate closed 5-year term. It is in a remote area. The previous seller took nearly two years to sell this property until my partner and I purchased it. The house was in a poor state when we purchased it (in my opinion) and I do not believe we would be able to sell it for near what we purchased it for. We would also be taking a substantial hit financially by breaking our 5-year amortization term.
Presently, I believe that my best option would be to renovate the house into a more reasonable domicile so that it can be rented out. Then I would also rent a place in the town in where I work. I am concerned about how tangible it would be to find people that would be willing to rent the house, as it is 15 minutes away from the local small town, and there are not many work opportunities within that town.
My partner believes that she will be able to find well-paying work in the town which I work out of. Regardless, I do not wish to subject her to contributing financially to a house in which we do not reside in, as she is not listed on the mortgage, she presently pays rent to me for our current house.
My partner and I are adamant on living together, as we believe it would put an unnecessary strain on our relationship if we were to live apart. With how often I work, I am rarely home long enough to do anything more than sleep, regardless.
Writing this, I realize that I'm doing more rambling than giving concrete numbers to crunch. So, TLDR:

• Current house is $170,000 mortgage with 4 years left on fixed-rate maturity date at 2.94%.
• Current yearly income (just me) is estimated to be $180,000 Gross with company that is now wanting me to relocate.
• My employer has offered to compensate my relocation fees, although I do not believe that they will cover the penalty fees from breaking my mortgage term.
• Average rental costs are $1250 (utilities included) within the town in where I work.
• Current house will not likely sell for anywhere near what I purchased it for, if there are even willing purchasers.
• Roughly $10,000 in renovation on current house needed for me to deem it rentable, if there are even willing renters.
• I will likely lose this employment if I do not relocate, and my likelihood of dying in an accident driving during work or to current home from work, due to sleep deprivation, is a genuine concern.
• There are no real work prospects where I currently reside, and I do not wish to jeopardize my relationship by working on rotation out of town.

I believe that my best option is to hopefully find renters for my current house, while finding a place to rent near work. Then hopefully sell my current house in 4 years when my fixed-term is finished. I believe I will be making a critical financial loss trying to sell it and incurring massive term penalties, while also selling at a loss.
I do not believe that I will be able to another job with anywhere near the pay that I am currently receiving, without jeopardizing my relationship by being away in camp.
I apologize for the relatively messy blob of information, as I believe I am probably missing critical points in my explanation of my current situation. Regardless, any and all advice would be greatly appreciated. I'm trying my best at gaining financial knowledge, but I believe that I am substantially behind the ball in comparison to the people that read and post on this subreddit.
