2023.05.30 17:39 Red_or_Green Russian tortoise died a week after buying

I had a Russian tortoise that lived outside in my backyard for about two years. We live in New Mexico so it’s warm pretty much year round. Last year I deployed overseas for 10 months and gave her away to a good friend since I wouldn’t be around to take care of her. She’s still doing fine to this day. A couple of weeks ago I bought another Russian tortoise from petsmart (I know, but there’s no other options in my area). When I got her, she looked really healthy and was very active. A few days in and I noticed she wouldn’t eat anything and would never come out of her hide. Then a couple more days passed and I found her stiff as a rock.
Is there anything I should’ve been looking for when buying? Or do you all have any idea what could’ve gone wrong? I did everything the same as with my last tortoise.

2023.05.30 17:05 Odd_Supermarket2422 Dating for almost 2 months after an 8 year relationship

Hello, hello, I'm 33 (f), and he is 28 (m)
I am newly dating again after going through a horrible 8-year relationship. The guy I have been seeing is like no other man I have ever met in terms of our conversations, care, and vulnerability within ourselves as well as me finally feeling comfortable in my skin and personality with him. We both started seeing each other on the implication of starting slow, and our goal was to form a long-term relationship via our online dating profile; we spoke about it in person several times before yesterday too!
We just spent the 4-day weekend together by taking a mini road trip, and I was going to express to him my feelings which every day is getting stronger. Still, I stopped myself due to not wanting to scare him away because he is scared to get hurt and develop feelings.
While driving home, the last 1.5 hours were spent discussing where we see this going, etc. There is a hiccup due to him working in the States and being from Mexico, so if he loses his current job, he will have to figure out other options even though he can stay here for 8 months legally and has sufficient savings due to his being a technological engineer. I told him that if he leaves to renew his Visa in August, I will be there for him no matter the circumstance. I hope this can go long-term, but if life gets too much on his end, I ask only for honesty, and we can break it off during or after August once he gets his new work Visa or new employment. I replied that I would go on the journey with him and not end the relationship over immigration scenarios because I deeply cared and would be by his side in any way I could.
He then mentioned to me he only sees this being short term because he doesn't know about his immigration status/situation and doesn't want to get hurt or hurt me. When he starts feeling strong feelings for me, he doesn't want it to continue because he wants to protect himself now rather than in the future with me.
I, of course, cried while we were driving back and knew he felt horrible for breaking my heart. We then spent an hour talking after we got home safely, and it just came down to uncertainty, not being in control of his situation, and getting devastatingly hurt.
He left by giving me a kiss which I, of course, wanted more of, and I kissed him about 4 more times. He then told me he would text me. I said those two things genuinely confused me and told him I wouldn't text him because it would be mixed signals, and I'm very hurt/sad. I then told him to tell me what he wanted and to take his time because I would be there for him no matter the situation, but I only asked for honesty.
I am heartbroken because I was going to tell him on Sunday night I was starting to fall hard for him, and I hoped I could show you my love for you, but thankfully, I stopped myself. I also told him I would be there for him no matter what, and with those words, he felt a lot more pressure and commitment even though I meant if we don't work out, I will be there through the good, bad, etc. by you calling or texting me when you need me!
I am starting to feel I am to blame for this situation because I was vulnerable with my emotions and feelings and wanted a long-term relationship with him. Still, he is also going through a lot emotionally and mentally with work, immigration documents, not wanting to get hurt, protecting himself from having feelings, and more.
Any advice on this would be beneficial! I am currently giving him space to think about what he wants to do, but my goodness, this is killing me because I was falling so deeply for him, and I thought the same, but now I am unsure of everything, but I also want the best for him.
Starting to fall in love is complicated, scary, and risky, but my goodness, I wouldn't change this feeling!! ❤️💕

Panthers owner Viola accused of draining "staggering" $ from public investors (floridabulldog.org)
TLDR - From last post
Through a series of tweets, I believe RC and Pulte are trying to point to Virtue financial based on their interesting responses to Florida Panther Tweets.
  1. Virtu Financial is a MARKET MAKER WHO HAS TECH THAT SPECIALIZES IN HIGH FREQUENCY TRADING
  2. BBBY is a high volume stock that has been traded on high volume over the past year and is being manipulated and barcoded for months on end being forced into Chapter 11 quicker than it should have.
  3. BBBY is one of the highest watched stocks on a daily basis
  4. Pulte tweeted about "Virtue Signaling" on 5/22/23. Alluding to a possible tip off of Virtu Financial.
  5. Pulte has already tweeted in the past month that they are going to be revealing major corruption.
  6. On Mothers Day, Cohen tweeted about shareholders and cronyism. Pulte follows up 30ish minutes later with a tweet regarding shareholders as well.
  7. On Mothers Day night: Ryan Cohen JUST HAPPENS TO BE RESPONDING TO VINCENT VIOLAS HOCKEY TEAM ON TWITTER.
  8. Vincent Viola is accused of stealing money from shareholders and paying friends and family (AKA CRONYISM).
    1. More specifically the lead complaint is from Ohio's Iron Workers Local No. 55 pension fund which suspects it has been cheated.
  9. Could they be the market maker behind manipulating BBBY and GME stock prices?
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________
On to the new developments:
When Pulte tweeted BIG WEEK AHEAD, holy shit, he wasn't kidding.
I worked on my previous post until about 2:30am on 5/23/23 in the morning and posted. Right around the same time as my previous post, Ryan Cohen commented on a Florida Panthers tweet at the same time in the morning. Ryan Cohen very rarely tweets this late in the day, most of his activity is within reasonable hours of the day.

5/23/23 - Ryan Cohen responds with a Fist/Punch emoji to Florida Panthers around 3:30am EST.
The fact that I did a write up about Vincent Viola and Virtu based on the Twitter activity from Pulte and Ryan Cohen, and RC makes a comment at the same time in the morning on the Florida Panthers Twitter account bewildered me.
5/22/23 - Pulte also responds to a Panthers GIF with a fire symbol. Both RC and Pulte are both responding to Panthers on the same day? Interesting.
It get's even more strange from there. Starting the morning of 5/23/23 a string of lawsuits began being filed against Virtu Financial:

I called in a personal dear friend of mine, The Count from Sesame Street, he did his due diligence and reported back to me: 13 lawsuits.
Ryan Cohen tweeted a fist/punch just before this string of lawsuits started very late at night.. I think there may have only been one pending before the tweet. RC tweets a punch.. and the lawsuits start flowing in? Is RC behind this chain of events? Also, later that morning.. Pulte tweets a fire? Maybe.. alluding to the fire has been started?
Legitimately, I post the article early in the morning. I goto bed and wake up, and I see tons of messages for me to check out all the new lawsuits against Virtu Financial. (Crazy timing)
Strange right? Not really, IMO. As in my previous post, I outline the cookie crumb trail that Ryan Cohen and Pulte were dropping over the past month (from what I can gather). The timing was definitely strange though.

5/23/23 - Ryan Cohen tweets about CEO compensation. There is some tinfoild here with the number 351 and 351 mergers.. could be a thing, but not getting into that here.
(Going back in time for this tweet) 5/14/23 - Pulte tweets about CEO Compensation and one scheme that bad CEO's do.
5/23/23 - (Same Day as RC Rocket CEO Tweet) - Pulte tweets about SHAREHOLDERS yet again. The S in shareholders is capitalized, not sure why he has done this in a few tweets (capitalizing letters of things that shouldn't be)
On May 25th, Pulte responds to a photoshopped tweet of both his head and RC's head photoshopped on Panthers players bodies.. \"True. Go cats\"
Pulte had a string of interesting tweets on 5/29/23 (Memorial Day):
5/29/2023 - Notice here, he bolds \"TM\" and \"Who Rigged it?\". Clearly he is setting up a connection for the next tweet. Could he be alluding to the Market Maker Virtu Financial who specializes in HIGH FREQUENCY TRADING?
Also, what does TM stand for? Tomorrow? Trademark? "The Market"? .... "THE MAYO!?!?!"
5/29/2023 - Notice Pulte bolds: \"There is a They\". Also this is the first time I have seen Pulte use bold in tweets in the same day, on the same subject matter. Strange that the \"T\" in They is capitalized. It shouldn't be.
Also, a wise live-streamer... Roaring Kitty? But.. I also kinda remember ABC ranting on the PP Show about something very similar to this. (I'm not combing through 100 hours of PPshow to find that)
5/29/2023 - Pulte is referencing \"They\" multiple times in this tweet. Based on the previous two bolded tweets, it appears to me he is saying: The market is rigged by someone who knows they are lying, the public/apes know it, but they don't give a flying fuck.
There is no hard evidence all three of these tweets are connected but I think the third tweet, he uses the term them "they" SIX times. In the previous tweet, on the same day, he outlines that there is a "they" and its BOLDED. The tweet before, he bolds "Who rigged it?" I see from my line of thinking: They are the ones who rigged the market. And that is the "they" he is referring to in the third tweet.
Detractors will say Pulte is talking about the bad eggs on the PulteHome board/Management or the former employee who was trolling Pulte on random accounts trying to smear his reputation. And they could easily be right, and that lines of thinking makes sense as well.
In my previous post, I mention that Pulte said that they would be revealing major corruption, does Pulte know "who they are"? Both Pulte and RC have been commenting on Florida Panther Tweets ALOT this month.
Based on the string of at least 13 lawsuits from Tuesday (5/23/23) against Virtu Financial, it's not making them look any better.
There is also this interesting article from about a month ago in regard to Virtu Financial Co-President and Co-COO selling stock:
https://preview.redd.it/p4si4cqeew2b1.png?width=682&format=png&auto=webp&s=5d8dbb009e7713e6548e21d098124171b4646866
The Co-President & Co-COO of Virtu Financial, Inc. (NASDAQ:VIRT), Brett Fairclough, Just Sold 57% Of Their Holding - Simply Wall St News (link)
Brett Fairclough, the Co-COO just happens to sell 57% before all these lawsuits start piling up? This seems rather sus.
The board of Virtu Financial is filled with non-qualified friends and family of Vincent Viola and Vincent Viola shares a majority stake ownership in the company. This is what is referred to as Cronyism.
Here's some highlights from the article:
"We wouldn't blame Virtu Financial, Inc. (NASDAQ:VIRT) shareholders if they were a little worried about the fact that Brett Fairclough, the Co-President & Co-COO recently netted about US$970k selling shares at an average price of US$19.39. Probably the most concerning element of the whole transaction is that the disposal amounted to 57% of their entire holding.
In the last twelve months, the biggest single sale by an insider was when the Executive VP of Markets & Global Head of Execution Services, Stephen Cavoli, sold US$2.6m worth of shares at a price of US$29.52 per share. While insider selling is a negative, to us, it is more negative if the shares are sold at a lower price. It's of some comfort that this sale was conducted at a price well above the current share price, which is US$19.00. So it may not shed much light on insider confidence at current levels.
In total, Virtu Financial insiders sold more than they bought over the last year. "
Also here is some additional sus information from the original article that started this whole theory:
Panthers owner Viola accused of draining "staggering" $ from public investors (floridabulldog.org)
"According to Forbes, which ranks Viola’s current real time net worth as $3.4 billion, Viola used the money to splurge on real estate – including the $10-million purchase of a pair of beachfront condos in Fort Lauderdale’s Auberge Beach Residences & Spa.
Viola and his wife, Teresa, sold the places in March for $11.3 million. In December 2021 they paid $19.725 million for a six-bedroom, six-bathroom single-family beachfront home on the Gulf of Mexico in Boca Grande, records show. The home is held in the name of a Delaware corporation using the property’s address."
Beach front properties not under their own name? Under the name of a Delware corporation? (for those of you who don't understand the significance of a "Delaware" corporation. Delaware is a tax haven state, many major banks and corporations are based out of DE to get large tax breaks. If you drive into the city of Wilmington, DE... (Don't its actually very dangerous), you will see there is a ton of major banks headquartered there.)
In my previous post I highlight Ryan Cohen referencing Cronyism:
This was tweeted by Ryan Cohen, the same day (Mothers Day) as when the responses to the Florida Panthers tweets started.
In conclusion, you can see in the past one week all the developments above in my crackpot theory that RC/Pulte are targeting Virtu/Vincent Viola.
We have about 13 class action lawsuits being filed, alot of selling from insiders at Virtu Financial over the past year, we have two more interactions from RC and Pulte with the Florida Panthers Twitter account, more mentions of "SHAREHOLDERS", and Pulte ranting about the mysterious THEY... and if you can't figure out who THEY is from this post. God bless your soul and HODL.
I think we are going to see huge developments on Virtu in the coming days/weeks.
AGAIN, none of this is proven to be true, it is just me connecting tweets and news articles. I am a certified idiot, and you should not make any financial decisions based on this information, because I am not a financial advisor nor am I a legal expert.

2023.05.30 16:51 Mister-E-Writer Cooking my way around the World (Showcase)

I’m very excited today.
When lock down first happened, knowing it’ll be awhile before we again had the opportunity to eat and drink our way through Epcot, I started a little challenge. Every month or so, as an excuse to get people in my bubble together and to push my culinary skills, I’d pick a different World Showcase pavilion and have a theme night. I’d make some of the well-known dishes from that pavilion, as well as cocktails.
After four countries (Mexico, Canada, Italy and Norway, drawn from a hat), life got in the way, and I had to take a hiatus. But I’m back tonight with Germany!
I’ll be serving soft pretzels (of course), currywurst with homemade curry ketchup, nudel gratin, german cucumber salad, and Werther’s Original caramel shortbread bars.
This has been a ton of fun, and a great way to get myself to try to make things that I wouldn’t normally attempt.
My favorite thing that I’ve made so far (by a mile) has been Le Cellier’s beer cheese soup (I’ve made it several times since), but the biggest crowd pleaser has been San Angel Inn’s pollo a las rajas.
Do any of you have a favorite World Showcase dish that you’ve successfully made at home?

2023.05.30 16:48 RhoynishPrince Why Silent Hill Ascension first? Here is why:

First we need to understand what is going on. Silent Hill Ascension will be a MILE.
What's this is MILEs thing?
Massively Interactive Live Events are a brand new form of entertainment that enables developers to reach wider audiences with minimum overhead. They are cloud-based, interactive broadcast streams that can be experienced on any connected, video-capable device.
With SH Ascension, Genvid will have it's ninth MILE. Some of it's includes The Walking Dead: Last Mile and Pac Man Community and Rival Peak
Rival Peak was the first MILE ever and it was HUGE
Rival Peak was a three-month interactive media experience that appeared (along with weekly companion show Rival Speak, hosted by Wil Wheaton) on Facebook from December, 2020 to March, 2021. Rival Peak and Rival Speak were co-created by game developer Pipeworks Studios, interactive broadcasting company Genvid Technologies, and Hollywood production firm DJ2 Entertainment in approximately six months, building on previous AI-driven, Unity-based simulation engines Pipeworks had created.
Rival Peak gained viewership gradually over its first month, geometrically over the second month and exponentially in its third/final month. Ultimately the interactive livestreams garnered more than 100 million viewer minutes while the Rival Speak companion show’s twelve episodes attracted more than 155 million views. Rival Peak attracted viewers from more than 70 countries with the biggest audiences coming from the United States, India, Brazil, Mexico and the Philippines. By the time the season ended, viewership had increased by 55x compared to Week One.
So what's the point of Silent Hill Ascension?
It seems to me Konami is trying to reach and attract different and new audiences apart from the usual and loyal Silent Hill fandom. If it does it well the franchise will grow and eventually we, as loyal fandom, will benefit from it because Konami is a capitalist company and in the end they want money and needs money to make new games.
Why the trailer looks like dogshit?
In my opinion it ties to the whole attract new audiences thing. The story needs to be relatable but not so deep for this supposed new and different audience spark some interest. Think about Dead by Daylight or something like this.

2023.05.30 15:36 firewalkwithme0926 Planning to sleep train, but an audiobook I started has me second guessing myself

Hi all! I am 28 weeks + 2 today, and eagerly awaiting our little guy's arrival. My husband and I have agreed from the early stages that we wanted to safely sleep train when appropriate, as maintaining our relationship and identities outside of parenthood is really important to us. We see everyone getting adequate sleep (within reason of course, not expecting miracles from a new baby and first time parents) and keeping our bedroom our space as being a part of that plan. We plan to start with a bassinet for ease of comforting during the newborn stages and transitioning buddy to his crib in his nursery down the hall when we are all ready to give it a try, ideally around the four month mark. We have friends with little ones who are approaching first and second grade and still bed sharing, and it's just not appealing to us. Maybe that's selfish? But we both grew up with pretty clear boundaries from our parents that their rooms were off-limits for the most part, with exceptions for nightmares, thunderstorms, etc. and feel that this was a neutral-positive in our upbringings.
All that said, I have some pretty heavy family trauma from other things, and I was curious about a book titled Mother Hunger. I had a big road trip last week and found it on Audible. The author spent the first chapter explaining the book was not about how you plan to parent or are parenting, but how you were parented. Okay, great, on board with that. By chapter three, however, there was an in-depth appeal that co-sleeping was actually the most beneficial thing a parent could possibly do for their baby, other countries have been doing it for centuries, sleep training is dangerously misinformed, and that a baby who learns to self-soothe is actually not capable of cognitively self-soothing but is actually just resigned to receiving no attention and is basically quivering with fear and stress overload until it shuts down enough to sleep again. I've since given up on the book as it felt way too preachy in this way and it felt like the author contradicted themselves by spending this third chapter giving nothing but parenting opinions.
But NOW I'm questioning myself. I don't and will never buy into bedsharing from a safe sleep perspective alone, but as a first time parent, hearing that my plan to sleep train partly for my own comfort may be hugely detrimental to my unborn baby is alarming. This author really wormed into the part of my brain that worries that sleep training really will affect my newborn's psyche and he'll already be fully entrenched in an anxious attachment style before he can even talk. I don't want to think that's possible, but...what if? Any advice, commiseration, words of wisdom, success stories to share with an overthinking first timer?

2023.05.30 15:02 scare_in_a_box [HR] Gaia's Decay

a comic page for this story
Sometimes the greatest horrors start with the smallest complaints. Only one thing was missing from Lonnie’s life and his wife never let him forget it. They had a lovely house, money enough to feel secure and have new things, food to eat, and friends to socialize with. But Sarah and Lonnie did not have a child. After trying for years, even going through rounds of IVF treatments, they still had no child.
Had this been a choice they made, perhaps Lonnie and Sarah could have come to terms. But Sarah never made the choice not to have a child. It was all she wanted. And honestly, Lonnie wanted it too. They’d even selected their house on the basis of the lovely positioning of the nursery within.
The day that nursery was converted into a home gym, caused a huge shift in their life.
For a while, Sarah fell into a depression and then she adopted a cat. It was old and had lived a hard life. Sarah seemed to like the idea of caring for it. Lonnie thought that was the end of the baby problem.
Then, one day as they sat on their porch staring out at the sunset, Sarah stopped petting the cat in her lap and turned a darkly serious expression toward Lonnie. “I’m going to get pregnant, darling.”
The odd spark in her eye kept Lonnie awake late that night. He kept picturing her speaking. What new plan had she hatched and how could he get her to talk to him? Over the next weeks, Sarah began making similar unsettling remarks.
“Darling,” she would say, her voice tinged with a disturbed tone. “It will be soon. I’m going to be pregnant. You’ll see.”
Lonnie feared that his beloved wife was losing her grip on reality. Still, life went on and he went to work in the mornings and came home in the evening. As a physicist, he didn’t make what he considered tons of money, but it was enough to support their little household. And that meant, to him, plenty of time for Sarah to find something that gave her life purpose. He imagined painting or gardening. With so much time spent apart, he could almost convince himself that Sarah was normal when she wasn’t making her proclamations.
One evening, after a long day at work, Lonnie arrived home to an eerie sight. A cable-like object extended from the ground and snaked its way into the house. He took a closer look and the material appeared to be organic. Though part of him wanted to inspect the place this cable emerged further, the bigger part of Lonnie instantly thought about Sarah inside the house with this thing, and of her odd statements of late.
The cable reminded him in a way he didn’t like of a giant umbilical cord.
Lonnie hurried inside to find the cable snaked through the house toward the back where the stair up to the upstairs bedroom were. He followed it. At the base of the stairs, Lonnie discovered their cat perfectly still, with the cable attached to its belly. Before Lonnie could react and reach out for the creature, the cable twitched and a pulse of energy rolled out on the air.
The cat began to shrink. With each pulse of energy, time seemed to roll backward for the feline. First all the gray left its whiskers. Then instead of a chubby middle-aged housecat, it instead looked like a lean feral creature, and then it was a kitten, then a smaller kitten, eyes shut as if they’d never opened. Lonnie stared as the last change took place and he was staring at a fetal feline lying at the foot of the stairs.
“Holy…” Lonnie said.
Then, in a jerky movement, something pulled both the cord and the fetus up the stairs.
This was only the beginning.
\***
Lonnie’s life now had almost nothing he would want. The world had almost nothing he would want. Including the awful stench that lay heavy on the air.
And as he strapped his diving helmet on, the stench retreated enough for him to think. He reasoned that the complete lack of anything to live for was all the more reason he needed to do something. He’d found the old model diving suit he wore at a local thrift store and left money on the counter for it—though no one was there to take the payment, Lonnie had a delusion of his own now.
“This can be undone. Someone can be saved.”
Sometimes he even managed to believe.
Lonnie hopped onto a road bike and made sure his prize possessions were secured: a chainsaw and an underwater scooter. With these things in place, Lonnie took off toward what he considered the center of this new monstrous world. A huge swell rose from the ground just outside town; this thing looked like nothing more than an overgrown pregnant belly, right down the red stretch marks and veins that peered out through its “skin”. From the apex of this belly grew a towering corpse flower, larger than any naturally grown flower and with a stink grown to match its size.
If only this mound had been ornamental and the stench had been the worse crime. But that was not true. The monstrous belly, with a towering corpse flower atop it, claimed all forms of life. In a few short months, it had reduced the world to a barren wasteland devoid of plants, animals, and people. Men, women, children, animals, plants… anything with life had been drawn into this horror.
Lonnie was seemingly the only survivor, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that his presence was spared because of his connection to Sarah.
He blazed on his bike across the landscape and glanced behind him at the back of the bike where the last item of vital value rested: a handheld container marked with the word “Atonement.”
It might be too late already to rebuild or repair, but atonement was always possible. Or so, Lonnie hoped as the rotting sweet smell of the corpse flower drew nearer. He could smell it even through the partially sealed suit—he hoped once fully sealed and using canned oxygen, the suit would be able to lock that out.
As he rode toward the bloated mass, pregnant with all the life it had been able to steal, he took strength in a memory. It was not a pleasant recollection, perhaps even just a creation of his own mind, though Lonnie didn’t think so. He recalled a dream.
In this dream that had come to him only once, the night before, Sarah appeared before him, her voice echoing through his mind. “The birth of the Second Desecration is near, darling.”
This cryptic message left Lonnie both bewildered and filled with dread. Determined to confront the abomination that had consumed the world, he steadied his path along the deserted highway.
Not that this had been a deserted highway a year before. He’d driven on it with Sarah plenty of times, usually stuck in traffic jams with only her soft, cool, voice keeping him from raging. Now that same voice drove him on in a very different way.
Now Sarah was part of the monster. But even if could save nothing else, maybe he could save her. The fact he was alive implied she was still in there and still cared. That had to mean something.
Driven by love and a glimmer of hope, Lonnie approached the monstrosity on the horizon. The giant pregnant belly, rooted in the ground, appeared ominous and foreboding. The sickly-sweet stench of decay filled his lungs and stung his eyes. As he drew nearer, he could see the giant boulders that had been tossed aside like pebbles as the belly emerged. Now they lay around the base like bubbles in the worst bubble bath ever. Lonnie contemplated his options and the weight of the responsibility he bore. His wife’s essence resided within this abomination, and he alone could determine its fate.
Summoning his courage, Lonnie hooked up the air to his suit. It cut out the awful scent, at least for a moment. Lonnie almost wished it hadn’t since with that oppressive rot gone from his lungs, he had to face his next task. He had to get inside this monstrosity.
He carefully set a hand on the “Atonement” sticker and then pulled his equipment down from the road bike. The chainsaw came first.
He turned it on and listened for a moment to the sound of its blade, half expecting the horror in front of him to respond. It did not. The rest of the world was still—no, still was too light a word. The rest of the world was dead. He walked on the bones of a corpse, begging for vengeance.
Lonnie swung the chainsaw against the mottled flesh of the belly. It squished and oozed, slicing easily. Red fluid leaked out along with a slimy yellowish substance. Some splashed against Lonnie’s helmet, giving the world a blotchy red sheen. He didn’t stop. There was no turning back, and nothing to turn back toward. In short order, Lonnie had opened a gap in the monstrous belly using his chainsaw.
For a long moment, he stood, chainsaw in hand, and stared into this pathway into the unknown. He had predictions for what lay inside, but this was uncharted territory. To know anything, he’d have to go in. Lonnie turned the chainsaw off and set it on his road bike. He doubted he’d see either tool again, but if his was the last living hand to affect the face of the earth, he’d leave as neat a mark as he could.
His hand tightened around the handhold of the “Atonement” container. All his hope was there.
Then hoisting the water scooter, Lonnie took in a deep breath of canned air and ventured inside the demonic swell. Darkness covered him. Encased in this tomb, Lonnie moved slowly at first, with only his headlamp to guide him. As his eyes adjusted to the eerie reddish light that filtered in through the skin and muscle of the belly, he saw more of his new surroundings. The interior revealed a cavernous expanse of flesh arching above and in meaty walls around him. He traveled with an eye to get to the center. He had an idea of what was there.
After all, Sarah had promised him a pregnancy, and a pregnancy implied a fetus.
Here inside the cloying heat of the belly, Lonnie could not even pretend that anything he did could bring the world back. There was nothing to restore. He’d always known that. For the first time, he truly accepted it. This was all there was, and he was headed toward the center of that evil.
Sure enough, he came to a central lake filled with amniotic fluid. It was too dark to see anything within the vast waters, yet small waves lapped out, implying some sort of movement within. Without hesitation, Lonnie plunged into the fluid, utilizing the underwater scooter to navigate swiftly through the watery depths.
He kept a firm hold of his “Atonement.”
The air inside his helmet tasted stale. Lonnie was sure he had time left before he ran out of air, but not endless time. And he was certain that breathing the air in this place would be death. He couldn’t afford fear or indecision.
The fluid clung around him, hot and thick. Much thicker than water, more like swimming through blood, though it was clear as water. Clear enough to see the bones that floated mixed in the fluid and the vines.
At the lake’s bottom, he encountered the abomination—the twisted fusion of human, animal, and plant—known as the Second Desecration. Sarah had uttered those words to him. He only believed them. Yet somehow, he’d expected it to be horrid, a creature from the deep recesses of depravity. Perhaps it was, but in its way, the Second Desecration was also a baby, though nearly four times as large as Lonnie already. Its facial features were almost human: large eyes, a human nose, and a mouth. Extra appendages grew from its back and sides. But its limbs still had the frail look of a fetus. This monstrosity was not yet fit to live outside its womb.
Now was the only moment.
Drawn closer by a mixture of curiosity, desperation, and love, Lonnie clutched the container tightly. Within it lay something dreadful and oddly wonderful. Something that had only been possible through his work in physics—a devastating mass destruction device—the first anti-matter bomb. It was a weapon he had never desired to see made real. Yet now he saw its potential as a means to reshape the impending reality.
He’d come to destroy this thing as it had destroyed his world and his life.
Amidst the grotesque scene, a thought penetrated Lonnie’s mind. If his wife had transformed into the vessel for the Second Desecration’s birth, could this creature, in some unfathomable way, be the son she had always longed for? That Lonnie himself had always wanted. Images of the world as it once was flooded his thoughts, a world already lost irretrievably.
Ending the Second Desecration now would not bring that world back.
But to do nothing would have consequences. He imagined the horror that would unfold if he allowed the Second Desecration to come into existence—a nightmarish realm akin to hell on Earth.
In the midst of his contemplation, Lonnie understood the precipice before him. The only thing that remained was to decide: should he release the destructive force within the container, returning everything to the void? Or should he permit his “son” to live, thereby allowing the birth of a distorted and contorted new world?
Either act was an end for Lonnie, an end for the world. In the end, Lonnie didn’t have anything except for a choice.
