Unusual Sammy Farm
2023.06.01 08:04 meandusandi Unusual Sammy Farm
I know there's a common debate about Sammy vs Trouser for mid to late game gold farming. Something that nobody talks about in those questions is the common problem Trouser runs into for long game farming. The monsters will eventually out scale Trouser's level and you'll need to restart in order for long form farming to work. Sammy doesn't have this problem as Sammy's gold farm/leveling isn't reliant on only monster kills. This is why a place like Il Molise is a place Sammy can farm that Trouser can not. Sammy's lag issue's aren't there either as there's no monster spawn creating a seamless farm that has no lag and no time limit or monster scaling stoppage for long afk farms. The speed at which I can farm at the mid/lag game stage way outpaces anything I've found with Trouser. Even with a good setup the lag on Trouser, lag still creeps in after 1B++ eggs while where as with Sammy on Il Molise there is none what so ever. Here's a link for an example setup. This is something I can leave for 12+ hours without any slow down or delay and the time will accurately show the time left (with a few minute at most variation between real time and in game time during a 8/12 hour window) :

2023.06.01 07:59 Tea-beast Choosing a new PC. Which brand/type would suit best? Help!
I am at a major loss and need some insight! My parents are in need of a reliable computer or laptop that isn't being utterly useless like their current HP All-in-One. It's a hunk of junk that forgot how to computer and when it does, it's extremely slow. It often doesn't start up well, needs fresh installs on windows every few weeks, and we're all tired of it. They're in the market for new, but they're relying on my best judgement for a better weekly-use machine.
Usage would be home business tasks only about once a week per a few hours in the day and that's it. Budget is around $500-600 max.
I've been debating between Dell, Lenovo, and Asus, finally whittling it down. So far, I've looked at :
- Asus Vivobook 17.3 i3 8GB/256GB marked at sale price $299 USD from $449
- Dell Inspiron 15 from official site marked at $329 from $379
- Dell New Inspiron Small Desktop marked at $499
- Lenovo Thinkcentre or Ideacentre Desktops / laptops for price drops vs capability
Upon reading
this article, I've found that I could in either direction between these two alone. I'm only leaning towards Dell because of it's reliability and my own experience with them. I'm torn if we should just get the small tower for it to last a longer time and have more memory, or just get a laptop instead because it's light use to begin with but they're concerned it won't be as hardy as a desktop. Would the difference even matter at this point? I'm waiting on them to
read this to see which better suits their needs at this point, so in the meantime, I was hoping to get some insight from the reddit-landers. Thanks in advance!

2023.06.01 07:57 heybaebae89 ML/Data Science Build (under $4k preferred)
What is your intended use for this build? The more details the better. Mostly for self-projects in data science and machine learning, along with some light gaming. Some examples include training classical ML models and doing some heavy data processing, inference and fine tuning on large language models (smaller Llama models and other open source LLMs).
If gaming, what kind of performance are you looking for? (Screen resolution, framerate, game settings) Light gaming only. Main purpose is for personal projects.
What is your budget (ballpark is okay)? Under $4k preferred, but willing to spend up to 5k.
In what country are you purchasing your parts? US.
Provide any additional details you wish below. Definitely open to suggestions. I'm also struggling to pick a good motherboard (AM4 vs AM5? What should I look for in motherboards?). Also would be nice to have room to add a 2nd GPU sometime in the future (although not a must).
PCPartPicker Part List Is this overkill? Been a while since I last tried to build one myself, so definitely would like some feedback.

2023.06.01 03:33 PariahMantra Weak Killer Changes (Fanmade Balancing Ideas)
Hey folks, I'm Pariah! I play more DBD than I should and I really enjoy pondering the game, the things that make it fun and the sometimes… questionable balance that I think many people find it has. After watching a recent killer tierlist video I was pondering if there were any interesting and fun ways to improve the lower tier characters without fundamentally changing them or ruining their core gameplay fantasy and since I sometimes design games (board not video game) I decided to take a shot and see if I could come up with ideas that would improve some of the weaker killers and I figured some people might be amused by what I had come up with.
There are a few rules and considerations I wanted to bring up before getting into specific killers that will apply to all of them or just general rules:
Balance: Every killer should remain weaker than nurse (or blight if you think blight is stronger). That's not exactly a difficult bar to clear, but its important. The goal is not to generically make the game harder for survivors (though everytime someone teabags and says gg ez after what was otherwise a fun interesting game the urge grows) but to make the weakest killers more playable and strong. You might be saying "But Pariah, that will make the game harder for survivors", and you're right, but I firmly believe that the game should not be balanced with bad killers justifying the op ones from a balance perspective. The goal is to pull everyone towards the center, but to make them different, rather than stronger or weaker. When you read something I've come up with and go "Holy crap this is some BS" I want you to ask yourself if its stronger than Nurse, because for some of these characters its definitely a huge improvement but I think I've managed to avoid the Nurse level or at least make it more possible to play around.
The Fantasy: With that in mind we can consider the guiding light of our balancing; the fantasy of the killer. For most it is the archetype or character, the cool thing you get to do that makes you seem badass or scary or powerful. Silent Bell Wraith jumpscares the hell out of people, Ghostface emerges from the shadows for a lethal backstab, Blight plays a game of Sonic the Hedgehog and Pinball at the same time. We want to play into those fantasies because they provide a differentiation in how a killer should play and function. The goal is to avoid a game where you feel like you are never anything but an M1 killer but instead you should feel like you have an interesting power and setup to play with. Maybe "after X point I'm an M1 killer" but even that isn't as much fun. This is also interesting for survivor gameplay because while it adds complexity it also adds interesting decisions and considerations. Playing against Plague comes with a consideration of whether you should drink from the fountain (you shouldn't unless its on a far edge of a map), playing against Oni encourages healing, etc. We want those interesting gameplay moments.
Complexity: With that being said we generally want everything to stay within a relatively similar level of complexity as to where the killer currently exists (which can definitely vary and make things difficult). If we were talking about Wraith, he's not getting a whole new bit added to his power, because as it stands his power is very simple. We'd much rather add to existing powers, but for those who have more complicated sets of things, adding to their powers is possible.
Numbers are scary and Add-Ons are hard: I'm not generally changing any numbers. For some killers that might be the best way to change them to be more towards the middle, but that's a level of game balance I just don't have the data to do and really should be refined by testing. We're going to come in with conceptual changes and then move forward into numbers balancing from there.
For the sake of simplicity here is our mission statement:
"Change the discussed killers such that they are more authentic to their fantasy and moved towards the average killer powerlevel while not massively changing their complexity or encouraging specific niche/problematic strategies". (That last bit is another way of saying that if we changed Bubba, he's not getting Insidious basekit).
I have figured out 6ish of the weaker killers but I figured I wouldn't write too much of a novel and have attached 3. If people are curious about Legion, Myers and Freddy I'd be happy to share them as well (People will call BS on Legion and I'm really proud of Freddy).
I'm really excited to hear what people think!
The Trapper:
Fantasy: Almost the archetype of an isolated killer. Shia Lebouf jokes aside, the goal is to feel like no matter where the survivors go, you have a trap for them. You have set up a prison they don't know they are in yet and they cannot escape you.
The Change: Every trap on the map starts armed and in a "decent" spot - meaning under a pallet, in a doorway or on one side of a window. This means that if you bump into a player while roaming the map early you don't have to decide between being an m1 killer or just ignoring them and can assess your ability to actually use the trap spawns to get a decent chase and maybe an early down/pressure.
Design Notes: As one of the starting unlocked killers, you don't want this character to gain a bunch of complexity but you do want them to feel good to play (even if they aren't top tier). That being said, you want to ensure that any power you give doesn't disproportionally improve the killer's ability to play the basement (where trapper can feel oppressive to play against). This won't fix things at high level play, and I acknowledge that. I would love if the spawns were stronger (like in grass) but fundamentally I'm trying to keep things fundamentally with reasonable programmable limits (I'll admit I'm not sure if spawning them in doorways is easily doable, but the technology obvious exists to determine window and pallet positioning.
This does come with another upside that I really like. For the babiest of baby killers, it gives some examples of good places to set down traps.
The Hillbilly:
I'm aware that Billy isn't is as weak of a place as other killers in the list, but for the amount of skill that Billy mains have to express and how much certain maps can ruin his day, I figure he could use some love to make achieving that massive level of skill feel better.
Fantasy: This one is actually interesting. Billy was clearly originally just Bubba-Lite before they got the license. He taps into the "chainsaw murderer fantasy", but since then his fantasy has arguably changed to a mechanical one. From my conversations with Billy mains there are two main appeals. One is just shouting as you rocket across the map at approximately 100,000 mph and the other is expressing the skill you've gained with the killer. They want to show sweet curves and long shot snipes across long terrain.
The Change: Let's give them more of what they want. Billy no longer stops at pallets when chainsawing. If the survivor does the perfect drop where they actually bonk him, he stuns, but if the pallet is down, he keeps going (likely through anyone behind the pallet). And no, it doesn't reduce his damage. He still gets the insta-down.
Design Notes: I can already hear the complaints about this one making pallets (an important part of the game) irrelevant and frankly that's intentional. Different killers should require different things to play around them and there are numerous killers that can negate pallets in a variety of ways. Also, let's be honest, would you not be excited to see a highlight of a Billy seeing how many pallets they can get in a single charge on The Game?
I also will admit that I'm not 100% sure how the Billy mains would feel about this, so let me know if that's something you feel would improve your experience if you are one of those blessed souls.
The Onryo: Fun fact: this is the killer that got me thinking about this list.
Fantasy: You're the little girl from the ring that traumatized me for multiple weeks when I was in middle school. You are everywhere, unavoidable and inexorable. It isn't a fast kill, but a guaranteed one.
The Change: Sadako can see the aura of every survivor with a certain distance of every television that is turned on. This definitely covers the nearby generators. For balance purposes this does not apply to any survivor carrying a tape (which symbolically works as Sadako is less angry with people spreading her message) For this to work you may also have to remove the "Sadako generates condemned when she teleports next to people" bit.
Design Notes: Sadako is hard because anyone with an instant Mori requires consideration of how that can be used. However, what's equally frustrating is that if the Killer doesn't play the style where they are just generating condemned and not actually pushing hook states, survivors will never "naturally" end up condemned and rather than it being something they have to play around, the killer basically has to cheese the game to make it relevant. Instead, we use it to put pressure on the survivors. There are 3 paths that can play out with this new design and I quite like them all frankly:
1. The survivors ignore the TV and Sadako uses the fact that she know which generator they are doing to teleport there and start a chase (interactive and fun)
2. The survivors ignore the TV and Sadako walks over to the generator. From that point she has basically a super info perk, but the survivors know she has it, and chases in that area become incredibly dangerous because of her enhanced information.
3. A survivor takes the tape and starts bringing it to the TV they can use it at, slowly building condemn all the way. They can use this time to turn off other TVs and could even try to use it to sneak gens, since they are invisible to Sadako's free aura reading from the TVs, but that is risky as well.
Option 3 has a lot of interesting play, since running around turning all of Sadako's TVs off gets very dangerous if she catches you since you are probably getting high on the condemned meter. It also changes how you play around Sadako depending on if you think she's on info perks (since she can almost certainly find you if you try to sneak gens or turn off too many TVs) vs if she's on chase perks (and then maybe you can get away with it. The VHS tape game remains in the game, but now the survivors have to play it with Sadako or they are giving her a lot of power.
That's all for now! Like I said, excited to hear what people think and to see how poorly I formatted this!

2023.06.01 01:54 Urbanmining Backplate doesn't fit... Meshify 2 XL + Asus Z790-E + Arctic Liquid Freezer II 420
Hey all, I submitted a support ticket but thought I'd post here as well. It seems the Meshify 2 XL + Asus Z790-E + Liquid Freezer II 420 combination doesn't fit the backplate of the Artic Liquid Freezer II 420. Any ideas? I really don't want to build my own custom backplate but surely something is off here. Seems odd the holes are so close on one side of the window.

2023.06.01 01:26 Prometheus585 Is SunTek any good?
I don’t want to make another Brand vs Brand post but I have always had 3M tint on my vehicles and I just got a pre owned car that has 3M Color Stable and it is damaged and torn on 3 windows. I am going to have my local tint shop tear all of it off and replace with new. The Color Stable looks hazy and blue, not a fan of that. The shop recommended ceramic, they have 3M Ceramic IR and SunTek CIR. In doing research I am hearing mixed things about both brands, but SunTek is an actual window film manufacturer whereas 3M is not. SunTek is less money, but money isn’t an issue, I just want good quality. So the question here is, 3M Ceramic or SunTek Ceramic? I am doing 5% all around and probably 50% or 70% on the windshield with a 5% visor. I was also thinking of doing 3M Crystalline for the windshield, but after researching, again, lots of mixed reviews.
Heat, IR, and UV protection are all important to me. For the windshield, I do not want any haziness or blurry spots. This was a common complaint I saw from 3M crystalline. Also, please don’t come at me for wanting to do 5% on the windows, I like the privacy aspect and don’t do very much night driving.

Has anyone found vents compatible with the Wave 2 hoses? It seems like they have the Ecoflow Wave 2 specific parts on both ends vs some sort of industry standard, so I'm trying to find vents to install in a DIY waterproof wood window box. 2023.06.01 00:31 cochayuyo_ Cultural differences? (21F/26M)
Hi reddit.
I've been in a LDR for two years. Met this amazing guy from Europe (I'm South American). He's super sweet, caring, has cute names for me, we call each other everyday and have a very stable relationship.
The problem is, that he behaves way differently (super cold) when we're alone vs when we're in public.
When we first met in person (in my country's airport) I saw him and wanted to hug him, and kiss him with all my heart. He gave me like a 1 second hug and continued to greet my family.
I felt pretty hurt. I talked about this with him when we had a chance to be alone and that's when he hugged and kissed me, saying that when he saw all my family at the airport he didn't think it would be appropriate to kiss in front of them.
Some time after that visit I went to his country. He treated me amazingly. Showed me his friends, family, workplace etc... But still acted so damn cold towards me when we were in public transport, or surrounded by people.
Maybe this is because he's from a northern Europe country? When I was in his country I promise I saw nobody smiling or showing some kind of excitement in the streets. But still I'd love to talk so comfortably in the train, as an example, as we do in his apartment.
When we're alone he loves to be together. We hug, kiss, have beautiful conversations and he's so, so, so different.
But if we're in public transportation, or anywhere with too much people. He barely stares at me nor talk to me. He just watches his phone, through the window and has a straight face until we're at home again.
Also when we met some of his friends, sometimes he grabbed my hand but mostly acted like I wasn't there or literally walked in front of me.
Is this cultural? I've talked this with him. Saying that I feel hurt and he says that in his country is inappropriate to show love or similar in public and it's what it's. That he's like that and that's it.
In my home country people are not kissing in public transportation or similar. But at least couples have a conversation, watch each other, share experiences, smiles.
When I'm with him in public I feel like he doesn't know me at all.

2023.05.31 23:37 nateatenate Please help with these ideas!
Sup guys. I'm presenting business ideas for feedback. Sorry in advance because this post is long, so I've labeled the important parts if you want to skip the extras!
To preface: I am going to be attending a business seminar on Friday. In this seminar, we are to go over ideas for startups. Those with the best ideas will have an opportunity to have support from the city we live in. In addition, the seminar attempts to encourage job growth in our area because the demographics need to look better. I am confident in sharing ideas because it usually comes down to execution, and good ideas are a dime a dozen. Still, I wanted input exploring the implications of three business ideas to establish a clear direction on which idea I will actively pursue. 1st idea- MODERN What it is: Modern is a home remodeling and design service where you remodel your home the way you want before you ever do anything. Imagine you have a day off, work from home, and want to reimagine your home. First, you take a few pictures of your home and then select some popular design templates that we have on tap. Next, you'll be able to come to our website. We then formulate that design in your existing space and provide you with the right furniture or lighting supplier. For extra service, we could have a beautiful location in major metropolitan areas with a few designs in person so you can see and feel. You can work with an actual person, and then we would take care of all of that extra work on the back end by setting up all of the renovations in the order it needs to be done. After we develop a design that works for your home and your budget, we connect you to the contractors that can supply that work. We order the necessary supplies and bundle the project in a single financed option or payment to simplify it. We make money from contractors who give us a cut; you get your first design for free. We then collect your data and sell it to our overlords (kidding). Why: Home Renovation and Remodeling is estimated to be a 500 billion to 700 billion dollar industry in the United States. If one were to guess the most prominent industry players on the consumer side of the market, Home Depot and Lowe's would have a strong presence with relatively no viable competitors. These companies remain strong but cater to a dwindling demographic. The problem is that I'm less handy than my father and the generations before him. So when I walk into Home Depot, I'm quickly overwhelmed. Our current home improvement sector no longer suits the most significant needs of my generation and the generations that will come after me. I need to learn about 50 rows of products and materials before I touch them, and no one has the time to know everything necessary to renovate their home. Initial Motivation: I recently moved into an old fixer-upper home. I have all these grand ideas for improving it, but I need to figure out where to begin. I need help figuring out where to start, what design I like, or having the time to figure out every minor detail because I'm swamped these days. Home Depot will not cut it; I have different needs and want things to look manageable. If there were a service where I could design how I want my home to be and use it as a conduit to give me my desired result, it would save so much time. It would also be designed with the big picture in mind. Then, I could create my dream space. In addition, I would get better pricing because I'm bundling, and the marketplace would enforce a new style of contractor competition. 2nd idea: Flow Genie What it is: Flow Genie creates Cash flow templates for specific business sectors and order flow templates for different types of service businesses. Think AC/Plumbing companies to flooring and home goods providers. It's software that compartmentalizes revenue and delegates it evenly so that you can make sure your business is managed correctly. You input your company data and goals, which Flow Genie will then take and segregate your funds appropriately. We do this for existing businesses by analyzing your data and separating funds from the beginning instead of randomly having massive outflows and inflows. For example, you own an AC or Plumbing company every time you receive a payment. In that case, part of the payment goes to the cost of goods sub-account, another portion to the payroll account, and another to miscellaneous or tax sub-accounts-no more need to have one pool of funds with no apparent direction. For new businesses, we could establish a proper pricing structure that suits your needs and is in control before it ever has the opportunity to get out of hand. This type of turn-key business management hasn't existed for millennia. So much knowledge about managing cash flows is lost in the ether. Flow Genie will also establish how much to order and when to prevent you from being overweight on the production side vs. the customer-facing side. It creates a nice flow that can bring much-needed stability in otherwise chaotic environments. Why: The most significant part of my job as an entrepreneur is spent thinking about cash flows and payments. Unfortunately, it is also the most overwhelming and treacherous part. The time spent thinking about cash flow and material/labor costs can act as a prison preventing growth due to fear and uncertainty. When moving around millions of dollars, the mistakes become more and more costly and can even compound over time. It's taken five years to grasp the little I know now. But, first, hundreds of thousands of dollars were lost because of my mistakes with cash flow and thinking I had more or less working capital than I did. Suppose people had a resource just a layer just above the Quickbooks Onlines' of the world. In that case, they might feel more confident running and growing their business. They could focus on providing better service rather than stress about finances. Initial Motivation: My business ran into an issue where I had 200 units ready in a warehouse and 100k due. The problem was that my accounts only had 80-100k at the time. The money would replenish after servicing those units for customers, but I had a big situation. On the one hand, I could pay most of this balance to get the new units in. But, still, I need the warehouse space, the extra cash reserves when that cash is gone, and installers to install those units quickly enough, and I have none of those at this time. So essentially, I'd put myself in a position that could go bad soon if I didn't navigate it correctly. Enter in the little spot between a rock and a hard place. The damned if you do and damned if you don't because now the supplier suspends any new orders until that backlog is resolved and my account is suspended. On the other hand, if I had proper procedures and processes in place to ensure that a bottleneck of that nature wouldn't occur in the first place, I wouldn't have this problem. These are things that Flow Genie would see before I do because I enter my input capacity, space capacity, and average gross margin percentages to create a proper balance and flow. 3rd idea: MRW What it is: A window and door replacement company that provides lower prices and an easy self-quoting tool so people can estimate their projects. Consider incorporating solar glass that can also power parts of your home. Why: Windows and doors are costly. Some companies charge upwards of $3-$5k per unit. When people have homes with 25 windows, they shouldn't have to take out a second mortgage to replace them. During the home building boom of previous decades, the builders' materials were cheap and, unfortunately, not built to last. The incentive was to make it fast and affordable. So where did these builders sacrifice the most quality? Things like windows and doors and siding. The parts of a home that are not superstructural or over-regulated. If the big box retailer is selling 25 windows to a homeowner, it can cost upwards of $70-$100k We can do it for $30k or less with the same glass. As far as solar glass goes, this technology is still being developed, but here's some food for thought. . Hypothetically, we could power the world's current electricity consumption by covering just 3.27% of the US with solar power plants. However, the issue is a gaping security risk because everyone would need to drop a bomb on that area, and the world would be in a pickle. However, if our windows were solar panels, they could cover a portion of our energy consumption while also being decentralized and ubiquitous. One would have to destroy all homes to sabotage only part of our power supply. In Arizona, for instance, The power generated from solar windows could directly power AC units, almost 25% of all energy usage in Arizona homes. They could also mine Bitcoin, but that's a whole other story. Initial Motivation: I had no idea people replaced their windows when I fell into this industry. I worked for a company for a few years and thought I could do it better, so I did. I want to provide a reputable service at a fair price, so I did. Oddly enough, this is the business model I'm using right now. It works because it's a simple service that people need without too much competition. To conclude: I know that was long. If you read all of that, thanks; you're a trooper. Feel free to let me know which one you're drawn to or any obvious rebuttals to the validity of those ideas. I have yet to think through these rough ideas, so there will be critical difficulties to overcome. Thanks!

2023.05.31 23:30 nateatenate Ideas for the win.
Order the necessary supplies, and bundle the project in a single financed option or payment to simplify it.
3rd idea: MRW: What it is: A window and door replacement company that provides lower prices and an easy self-quoting tool so people can estimate their projects. 2023.05.31 22:20 Sad-Cauliflower-3003 How to configure uBlock for an Organization by: Use Windows policy, or configure Google Chrome extension via G Workspace?
Hi, I am trying to do some basic configuration for uBlock Origin (adding sites to the whitelist.) extension in Google Chrome for my organization.
I deployed the Google Chrome extension using the admin dashboard in G Workspace (Devices ==> Apps & Extensions ==> Users & Browsers)
I need to add some sites to the uBlock whitelist. I have searched for some documentation and found some posts, but have not been able to successfully follow them.
I guess the first thing I need to know is: Can I somehow enter a JSON policy for uBlock within the G Workspace control panel, or is it something I should try doing in Windows? (The various posts from several years ago seem to use different methods, and I'm confused.)
Here are some posts I found:
Control Trusted Sites with GPO? : uBlockOrigin (reddit.com) G Suite and Whitelisting : uBlockOrigin (reddit.com) Deploying uBlock Origin · gorhill/uBlock Wiki · GitHub (For this one, I tried to use the "apps-script" to generate a JSON policy, but I never got that JSON to work within G Workspace.)
If I can figure out how to start (with Windows registry vs. G Workspace configuration) I might be able to work the rest of it out.
Thank you!!

2023.05.31 20:33 what_a_drag237 Embrace, Extend and extinguish (E, E & E) is over, but maybe not for the best?
I've been using linux since mid November, I really really like windows, I like linux, I love KDE/Plasma (Very new to me, never felt love for software before,) though I've been using other DE/compositors as well (my current setup has plasma, gnome, hyprland & sway.)
I'd say I'm a tech enthusiast, I like tinkering and breaking my systems, have been doing with windows for years, now on linux (community here might refer to as normie.) I tried linux after seeing a windows 12 leak, and some promotion by some of you at PCMR, I stayed after trying plasma.
I also like microsoft, more than any other big tech corp at least.
My current device is Surface Pro 6, usage is 75% fedora (docked or laptop) & 25% windows (tablet mode, experience in linux is far-far behind on this front)
Now having listed my biases, I want to address the "E, E & E" & "Microsoft <3 linux" discourse.
I believe microsoft does love linux, and I think we can say they've been embracing well, specially in the cloud/enterprise side, which is their main business at this point.
and in my opinion the era of extend and extinguish is over.
Why? Because it makes more sense from a business pov.
The world has changed, and we see the popularity of ios and android, both are extremely closed systems compared to windows, mac is becoming more and more popular as an alternative. Windows doesn't really have the option of closing down the same way, they tried.
In a world of closed off operating systems linux and windows has more in common than ever.
Next the developer bleed, not to linux but macos, with linux running a lot of the web-services a lot of devs are starting to prefer macs for the nix workflow, microsoft needs to solve that for themselves.
Final business reason is look at android, linux kernal, but very locked into google, without easy way out. they can better spend resources to make an existing kernal a lot of people are working on fit their needs vs maintaining one of their own, I'm not saying microsoft will drop NT anytime soon, but I doubt they don't see the missed opportunity of free community labour.
They can't just swap kernals, but I think with ideas like windows core os, hyper-v & wsl2 we are moving to a future of dual kernal (NT/Linux) to maybe very long term future just linux, or as they might call it windows/linux. (This section was pure wishful thinking, I don't know what microsoft is really planning, not the Kwisatz Haderach here)
So if all these things checkout, why is this bad? Well it's bad if you're in the free software camp, they don't need to extinguish gnu/linux, they can simply incorporate good linux features in windows.
You can already see traces of it in windows 11:
- The user directory on file explorer is now called home, powershell, new terminal.
- The rumours for a while has been that they've been dis-integrating windows, making the shell less dependent on expolrer.exe running, etc.
- windows 11 taskbar is also a sign of that, it's a new taskbar from scratch, kinda sucks so far, but in the latest update they brought back un-grouping icons, started adding useful widgets to the widget pane, it's the worst it'll ever be.
- from leaks we see they're at least thinking of taking on higher level of customisation, with top bars, floating panels, etc.
I doubt they care so much about the nature of their OS vs whether people are using their services on them, the kernal doesn't matter, if they could use a open source kernal and have android level of control, they'd trade in a heartbeat.
Microsoft's convergence with linux is ultimately a way to bring benefits of using linux with great propitiatory software support and availability.
These things would be great for a user like me, but ultimately take away a lot of advantages of running gnu/linux.
Thanks for listening to my Tux Talk.

2023.05.31 20:18 ArthurMaxley I think we're about to witness a Nuggets dynasty.
I think we're on the cusp of something monumental for the NBA. I believe The Denver Nuggets will be a dynastic team, similar to the 80s Celtics and Lakers, the 90s Bulls, etc.
All of Denver's assets are young, dynamic players who can shoot and have size to defend from the 3 point line to the paint. They have a generational talent in Jokic - who is only 28 years old. I have them winning these Finals quite easily, in 4 or 5, and I believe there are no serious threats to their dominance in the West in the years to come.
Yes, Dallas is good, but nowhere near as deep or defensively minded as Denver. The Warriors' window is closing fast, and unless they make some big offseason moves, I doubt they'll be back in the Finals anytime soon. I think the Lakers have hit their ceiling, and LeBron isn't getting any younger. I feel his last accomplishment will be to play with his son - which he really wants to do for some obscure reason. You could make the case the Suns might be that team, but they'll have to work on adding depth, in the same vein as Dallas. I'm not going to mention the Kings, Grizzlies, or TWolves, as they are promising teams, but still too young and inexperienced to make a splash in the next 3 to 4 years in my opinion.
In the east you really have to worry about four teams, the Bucks, the Celtics, the HEAT, and the Sixers. The Celtics do not inspire confidence at all, even before their game 7 loss. And although they would have matched up well against Denver, I feel they need to work on their decision-making down the stretch and find a reliable point guard before they can be considered a true championship contender.
The HEAT's time is now, but as mentioned, they aren't likely to win these Finals, and although they could have a couple more deep playoff runs in them, they haven't been convincing enough for me to put all my money on them. The Sixers have a lot of decisions to make in the next few months, but the bottom line for me is that Joel Embiid is great, but not "carrying-a-team-to-the-Finals" great. This leaves us with the Bucks as the only true threat in the east. The Bucks' core - with the exception of Giannis - is getting older though, and Khris has been injury prone in his career. I don't see him as a reliable scoring option down the stretch anymore, but I accept I could be wrong.
I'd love to see Bucks vs. Nuggets in next year's Finals, although I think Denver's bench is better and more reliable, and will become even better if they win the chip this year. I mean, who wouldn't want to play with a selfless big man who passes the ball better than any guard in the league and a bunch of role players who do everything right? I bet a bunch of experienced role players - you could call them ring chasers - will look into Denver's house market in the coming years.
Now, I know the NBA's landscape is a fast-moving, always adapting one. But at the same time, with the new salary cap and CBA agreement, formation of superteams will become more unlikely in the future, and I don't think any one player can shift the dynamics of the NBA the way LeBron did thirteen years ago in his checkered shirt on national TV.
All that to say that I believe Denver is an organically assembled, well-oiled, talented group that - if egos and money don't get in the way - could become one of the greatest dynasties we've ever seen, winning 4, 5, or even 6 championships in the next few years.
Do you agree? Disagree? Let me know your thoughts!
Bonus question/hot take: I don't think the NBA would be happy with a Nuggets dynasty. Their ratings seem good this year, but having such a "boring" team dominate the NBA would likely take the spotlight away from bigger teams with bigger fanbases. What do you think?

2023.05.31 19:38 dreamingofislay Feis Ile 2023 Day Five Bowmore & Ardnahoe Day Recap (5/31)
| Back at it for Day Five of the Feis! Today's the first day split between two whisky distilleries, the island's oldest (Bowmore) and its newest (Ardnahoe). This doubling up is going to be happening more because several new distilleries are opening here (Port Ellen, Portintruan, ili, and Laggan Bay) in the next few years. The Kinship tasting in a handsome back room of the Ardnahoe Visitor Center - Bowmore absolutely killed it in terms of fan service this year. Let's tick off why. First, one of the best swag bags of the week: mini-glencairn glass, lanyard, bung stopper coaster, little lock souvenir, carabinekeychain ring, and a postcard, all in a nice canvas bag. Second, although most of their tastings were bookable in advance, they kept a few slots and events for people to book on arrival, a real treat for those who couldn't snag a ticket online. Third, they had carnival games in the courtyard with nice prizes for winners, including a shuffleboard contest where the day's high scorer would win this year's Feis bottle.
- And fourth, and most importantly, Bowmore had a killer dram bar that was exactly what I hoped Laphroaig would do yesterday. Everyone got two free dram tokens good for a Bowmore 12 or 15, but the real treat was the cash bar. Want to try the 2023 Feis bottle? 6 pounds. Beyond that, they had a "last drop" menu with prices between 5-15 pounds to try expressions from the last 15 years of Bowmore's history, including a 21-year Port distilled in 1988, an ex-bourbon 21-year-old from 1989, on and on. This is why real whisky lovers want to come to Feis: to try bottles they would never see, probably never even hear about, at home. Bravo on the tasting bar, and a clear win for Bowmore vs. Laphroaig among the Beam Suntory distilleries this year.
- My only slight negative note is that Bowmore's facility isn't laid out very well for the festival which, fair enough, it's a working distillery, not a party hall. It just so happens that Laphroaig and Caol Ila have these big, wide-open spaces to allow people to congregate. Bowmore's is long and narrow, and around the back of the plant up against the sea, so it funnels people away from the bands and the live music.
- It is well worth visiting Ardnahoe on this shared day. The distillery is a stark contrast to its older siblings: ultra-modern and sleek, with huge, airy spaces, reminding me more of a high-end winery in Rioja or Napa Valley. Even the stillhouse has floor-to-ceiling windows with a jawdropping view of the water and Jura. The gift shop has dozens of independent bottlings from all over Scotland thanks to Ardnahoe being owned by Hunter Laing. Probably the best single bottle shop on the island. And it may also have the best tasting bar; the menu is a leatherbound book with dozens of offerings and low prices. 5-7.5 pounds for 20-year-old-plus whiskies, which is unheard of, at least in the U.S.
- Premium events on Feis Ile are often very good values. The Kinship tasting at Ardnahoe is a good example. Kinship is their annual release around festival time and consists of six old and rare expressions (this year's ranged from an unusually young Bruichladdich 18 to two 33-year-old Islay whiskies from Bunnahabhain and Caol Ila). While the ticket was pricey at 100 pounds, the bottles average over 500 pounds, close to 20 pounds per 25 ml pour. Doing the math, these six whiskies cost less per dram at the tasting than in the bottles.
- Ardnahoe's own single malt is coming out next year for the first time. I asked them to describe it, and they said it's supposed to be "fruit forward, smoke second," peated to around 40 ppm so between Bowmore and the Ardbeg/Laphroaig/Lagavulin trio. Only Islay distillery to use worm tub condensers and with the longest still arms in Scotland, all enhancing the fruitiness of their spirit. So excited to try it next year and hoping a few bottles make it stateside.
- We do do non-whisky events now and then! Today's was a pottery painting experience at Persabus Pottery, a small cottage shop that sells gorgeous painted pottery and also lets customers paint their own pre-made clay items, ranging from plates to tea kettles to small jugs. The cost of the experience is the cost of the item (most are in the 25-50-pound range; I did a 22.5-pound dinner plate) plus a 2-pound-per-person studio fee for the use of the paints and equipment. It's a serene interlude from a week of downing whiskies. This fun time is available year-round, so I highly recommend it. Here's my poor man's take on Machir Bay, before firing:
Machir Bay, interpreted by a truly horrific artist - The people here are so friendly it's unbelievable. I was hanging out in line before Bowmore opened and struck up a conversation with a couple who booked a holiday here not realizing it was Feis week. Turned out, they had tickets to a Laphroaig-run trivia night tonight and couldn't go, and they gave me the passes for free. I wish them good karma for the rest of their trip!
Another day of epic drams, and still a Laphroaig-fueled evening to go: Bowmore Feis Ile 2023 18 y.o. - Pulled out of oloroso and PX sherry casks, this is a classic, strong example of Bowmore's distillery character. The kind of dram I'd have someone try if they wanted to understand what Bowmore aims to do. Sultanas, dried fruit, rich and sweet. Kinship 2023 Bunnahabhain 33 y.o. - Another ex-bourbon Bunnahabhain, a rarity. Paul from Ardnahoe gave "heather honey" as a main note, and I'm not going to gainsay his description. It's a classic old ex-bourbon dram with waxy, fruity sweetness and a hint of fresh ginger on the finish. Kinship 2023 Bruichladdich 18 y.o. red wine cask - By far the darkest dram on the table, and my wife's instant favorite. I called the nose chocolate milkshake; she said malted milk balls and root beer float. Point is: rich, dessert-like aromas, followed by an intense sweet, spicy, and tannic attack that's so characteristic of red wine-matured whiskies and almost resembles a cask-strength bourbon at times. Kinship 2023 Highland Park 27 y.o. - My favorite of the day, with a chameleon of a nose that started out farmy and funky but transformed over about half an hour to apple pie. The palate was a little medicinal and complex, but the highlight was the finish that burst with floral and orchard fruit notes. Kinship 2023 Caol Ila 33 y.o. - Just had an older, Douglas Laing Caol Ila 40 earlier in the trip, so it's interesting to try a Hunter Laing now. The two brothers who inherited the company from their father split it down the middle in the aughts, dividing the casks in half, so they have very similar bottlings. This one was a crowd-pleaser and won a survey of all tasting groups today as the collection favorite. Loads of lemon, and then a warming leathery/barbecue smoke on the finish. Kinship 2023 Bowmore 27 y.o. - My second favorite, this had the most fantastic tropical fruit flavors of any whisky so far this week. Old Bowmore really leans toward that direction, and this one does it to the umpteenth degree. Kinship 2023 Laphroaig 25 y.o. - The more Laphroaig I try, the more I'm reminded of why it's my favorite distillery. Its medicinal, maritime, yet sweet and fruity (as it matures) profile is instantly recognizable. This one didn't veer off the beaten path at all; could easily mistake it for an exceptional official bottling. Slainte! Three days left: Kilchoman, Bunnahabhain, and Ardbeg. I wish I never had to leave. submitted by dreamingofislay to Scotch [link] [comments] |
