So I had a previous post asking about phosphates…
tldr; phosphates aren’t critical but eliminating them absolutely can make it easier to keep a pool sanitized. It definitely did for me.
I had a leak for a half a season during which I was replacing a lot of water, low CYA, and bad chlorine, leading to a couple algae blooms. After fixing the leak and getting the water balanced, I thought I had everything good, but it seems I had a chlorine resistant yellow algae, that would grow in very small quantities on the walls of the pools. I slammed 3x - chlorine at ~25-ppm, CYA 30-40, and held for 24 hours after meeting the criteria. Every time the algae would clear up only to return 1-2 wks later.
I tested phosphates and found them at 1000-ppb so I decided to try addressing them. Removing the phosphates took 1/4th of a $30 bottle of chemical, 3/20 tests in a $10 kit, a filter backwash, and very little time- so it was easy and cheap as far as I’m concerned. The result is fantastic. Over the last week, I’ve kept my chlorine at 2-4-ppm, and brushed walls once. All of the remaining mustard algae has disappeared on its own. I’m firmly on board with removing phosphates now.
A couple notes, the pool store stuff is often watered down, it’s worth it to look at the labels. Also, I will not be adding a maintenance dose of this chemical to my pool, as it’s a waste and possibly will cause an accumulation of lanthinum chloride in my water. I went 4 years with elevated phosphates before I had an issue. I plan to test every 6-12 months and manage accordingly..

Apologies for the old-timer post, but all the talk about the new (or not) spawn pool for the new season reminded me yesterday of one of the features of the early / pre-pandemic aspect of the game that's missing. When PoGo was launched, the game talked about "biomes" where different types of pokemon would spawn, and featured "nests" where you'd find multiple spawn points of a certain pokemon. Biomes never worked that well, in my experience, but nests did. You'd get up on a Saturday morning and, because you wanted to farm, I don't know, Onix, you'd go to a particular park where there was a Onix nest and spend a few hours playing. Every few weeks nests would rotate.
That's gone from the game now (at least for practical purposes). Need a particular pokemon? There's no point in exploring. Either they're everywhere or they're not. And if they're not, well, either you wait for an event or you're out of luck because they're "paywalled" in raids or eggs.
Perhaps there's a technical reason why Niantic couldn't get these features to work the way they wanted. But it seems to me they were ditched because what Niantic really wants is for us to spend as much time as possible in the game.

Sometimes a band gets so big that they somehow outshine themselves. They reach a point in their career where it does not matter if they release a new album or not; fans just want to see them tour. No one gave a damn that Led Zeppelin had not released a new album since the 1970’s; everyone just wanted to see them play again at the O2 Arena in 2007. When The Who played the Super Bowl halftime show in 2010 they had only released one new album in 28 years, and no one cared. And no one cares that Guns & Roses aren’t making new music. They still packed arenas to see how much cake Axl had packed into himself.
We’re going to take a dive into a blues power trio from down south who have zero need to release any new music, since their recording career stretches back over five decades. They had amazing and groundbreaking success in the ‘70s, the ‘80s, and the ‘90s before hitting the max level. Instead of playing to win, they now play for fun. Their sexually charged lyrics and videos inspired generations of teens to both dress better and worry about their fly. And you can bet that their fuzzy, bluesy tight sound had a huge impact on our very own desert dwellers.
It’s time for us to take a walk with That Little Ol’ Band from Texas. This week’s featured artist is the legendary ZZ TOP
About Them
The Power Trio is a tested and true format for a rock band. Lots of examples come to mind: Cream. Rush. The Police. Biffy Clyro. King Buffalo. Them Crooked Vultures. (Wait a sec. Just three members? Clearly, not everything is bigger in Texas.)
There is a member joke there somewhere, but I just can’t get it to come. Hmm. Perhaps it will come if you play with it a bit.
Hey! Stop that. Get your mind out of the gutter.
ZZ Top’s original and founding member was William Frederick Gibbons. Born in Houston in 1949, the front man was originally a drummer but, after studying with Tito Puente in New York City, picked up the guitar at age 13. His dad was a musician in show business, which allowed Billy to get an insider’s view of the industry. By the late ‘60s, he had been in and founded a number of bands and had even befriended the late great James Marshall Hendrix. One of his first bands, a psychedelic/art house band called The Moving Sidewalks, toured with the Jimi Hendrix Experience. This meant that Gibbons was actually mentored by Snagglepuss himself. They also toured with The Doors, where Gibbons saw the legendary self-destructive band somehow manage to rise above conflict and make music every night. The Moving Sidewalks generated a following all of its own with a couple of hit songs, and things seemed to be headed in the right direction.
Things were going absolutely great until bassist Don Summers and keyboard player Tom Moore were drafted into the army to fight in Vietnam. Don't you just love the ‘60s?
Gibbons and drummer Dan Mitchell added a new keyboard player, Lanier Greg, and tried to make another run at it. But the chemistry was all wrong. Gibbons rechristened the band as ZZ Top (an homage to BB King), and declared that he wanted more of a straight up rock approach than the art-house kaleidoscopic sound.
Gibbons, Mitchell, and Greg (isn’t it weird when last names are also first names too?) recorded the single Salt Lick in 1969. This generated a bunch of interest and a recording contract. Decisions over the direction of the band ensued and it quickly became clear that Mitchell and Greg did not agree with Gibbons’ hard rock approach. That ended up being a poor life decision for them, but a great one for a couple of other guys.
Clearly, Gibbons needed a new rhythm section.
Fortunately, he found a package deal.
Dusty Hill and Frank Beard - also both born in 1949 - had been playing together on the Dallas-Houston-Fort Worth circuit in a number of bands, including The Warlocks, The Cellar Dwellers, and a fake cover band called The Zombies. Both the Duster and the (then ironically) beardless Beard also heard the siren call of rock and roll. Hill was classically trained and was an accomplished cello player before moving to his signature bass. Frank ‘Rube’ Beard appears to have been born with drumsticks in his hands (which I imagine might have been uncomfortable for his mom).
Beard joined the band first, along with bassist Billy Ethridge, who had played with Stevie Ray Vaughn. Ethridge balked at signing a contract and so joined Mitchell and Greg on the list of ZZ Top’s former members. Their lineup was set. Hill and Beard anchored the band in a rock-solid, tight, bluesy fashion. Gibbons meshed perfectly with this duo, and his Hendrix-inspired guitar work was on another level. Hill provided backing vocals, and Gibbons’ low throaty growl was an impressive counterpoint to his soaring fretwork. The talent was all there; now they just needed to record some music.
But success was not instantaneous, not by a long shot.
Their first album - appropriately called ZZ Top’s First Album - gives insight into who the band were to become. In this 1971 release, you can hear their raw sound. The record peaked at 201 on the charts, and had only one single - (Somebody Else Been) Shaking Your Tree. It did give them material to go out and tour. The boys gelled on that tour and went back into the studio with renewed energy, and emerged with 1972’s Rio Grande Mud. The disc was a step forward in refining their sound. The album almost cracked the top 100, and the only single - Francine - went all the way to number 69.
Nice.
But the band knew that their third album, Tres Hombres, was something special. It is the epitome of Southern Rock: bluesy, fast paced, sexy, and irreverent, it is just over half an hour of pure magic. And while the album went gold and peaked at number 8 on the charts and is worth your time, it was one particular single that rocketed them to stardom. You know it and you love it, and a-how-how-how-how: La Grange. It is still in heavy rotation on classic rock stations today. And why not? The song is an absolute banger of boogie woogie blues, written about a visit to a whorehouse. What’s not to love?
La Grange propelled them to popularity. Tours sold out. Venues got bigger and bigger. 1975’s follow up album, Fandango!, was half live album (with some covers) and half new material - like an EP with bonus tracks. They covered the Elvis Presley classic Jailhouse Rock, Willie Dixon’s Mellow Down Easy, and John Lee Hooker’s Long Distance Boogie. The boys had rock and blues chops, and had 5 years of touring experience. These were bold statements that cemented their musicality as well as honoring their roots. But side two of the disc had another track that you’ve come to love. You ain’t asking for much: You’re just lookin’ for some Tush. Tush was the perfect sexually charged follow up to ensure that they were not one-hit wonders. It was written in a ten-minute spasm of creativity at a sound check, and has gone on to be one of their most popular songs.
While Tush topped the charts, ZZ Top went back into the studio to record their full length follow up, 1976’s Tejas. The name of the album means ‘friends’ in the Indigenous Caddo language, and was the basis for the name of the state. You know what that means? It means that the name of the state is ‘Friends’. Just like the ‘90s sitcom. Don’t mess with Friends. Anyways, this was an album of experimentation for the band, and unlike its predecessor it came out half baked at best. Billy Gibbons has called it a transition album. What actually happened is the band transitioned into a hiatus from touring and recording, taking some significant time off. They had recorded five albums in six years and spent virtually all their time on the road. The latest effort was just not up to their standards and was a step back. It also completed their recording contract.
What was the solution to this burn out?
Facial hair of course.
The boys took a few years off before landing another recording contract, this time with Warner. Over those months, both Gibbons and Hill grew what would become their signature long ‘Texas Goatee’ beards. Frank Beard did not grow a beard (though he did finally succumb to peer pressure from his bandmates in 2013, and his is much more neatly trimmed). So while they were resting/relaxing/getting their groove back/aligning their chakras or whatever, they also started to reinvent their signature sound as the world moved towards a decade of legendary excess.
The first step on this reinvention journey was 1979’s Degüello. The title literally means ‘decapitation’ but idiomatically refers to a fight to the death. Clearly, the band decided to tackle their transition head on. The album was not as successful as Tres Hombres or Fandango!, but it was not the flop that Tejas was. It did spawn a couple of singles - I Thank You (which was a cover) and the signature hit Cheap Sunglasses. Both are staples at ZZ Top concerts to this day. Degüello was quickly followed up in 1981 by the album El Loco. This was really the first time ZZ Top incorporated a synthesizer into their sound. As you know, the synth was THE new wave sound of the 1980s. Gods help us, keytars were once popular. But Gibbons, Hill, and Beard did not abandon their edge. The single Pearl Necklace was an immensely popular innuendo laced tune from this album. And no, I will not explain what a pearl necklace is to you.

Over the course of their first seven albums, ZZ Top had steadily grown in popularity and become a truly extraordinary live band. More than a decade of touring together meant that they had not just cut their teeth. They had found the Tooth Fairy, beaten her senseless, and added fangs to their jaws. They were ready to tackle whatever came their way.
Their huge breakthrough coincided with the birth of music videos and MTV. 1983’s Eliminator was an absolute monster of an album. ZZ Top were everywhere. They completely embraced the Music Video as a medium and became pioneers in this new genre. They branded their band with a 1933 fire-engine red Ford Coupe, which was on the cover of the album. They even had a signature hand gesture that they used as the car went by. The car belonged to Billy Gibbons and embodied his hot rod obsessions. It was featured in the videos for Gimme All Your Lovin’, Sharp Dressed Man, and Legs. Other singles from the album included Got me Under Pressure and TV Dinners. Eliminator is still the band’s most successful album. They were at the absolute height of their popularity with a massive audience. No doubt the 10-year-old Joshua Michael Homme watched those videos on a small screen in the California desert, little knowing that he would one day collaborate with Gibbons.
Seeking to capitalize on the popularity, the band went back into the studio and released Afterburner in 1985. It featured the signature hot rod on the cover and spawned two more singles - Sleeping Bag and Velcro Fly. Afterburner was not an innovative album by any stretch of the imagination. It simply built on the success of Eliminator and replicated the sound. If you blended the two albums together it would be very difficult for a novice fan to guess which song came from which disc. But hell, when you release the most popular album of your career and are earning millions of dollars for that sound, it is not time to mess with success. Or with Texas. Or with Friends (though Ross was a pain in the ass, IMHO).
That desire to not screw up a good thing was also evident in their next release, the retrospective re-release Six Pack. This was a great way to earn some bucks with a simple repackaging of existing tracks - I’m looking at you, K-Tel… - and introducing them to another generation of fans. This was not a bad thing at all - you gotta get that green whenever you can, because fame can be fleeting.
ZZ Top closed out the decade by going Back to the Future. Literally. They appeared in the third installment of the Michael J. Fox trilogy as the olde-timey house band (complete with rotating guitars) in the saloon scene. The single and signature song from the movie, Doubleback, appeared on their 1990 release Recycler. The album spawned two more singles: My Head’s in Mississippi and Concrete and Steel. Recycler was not as successful as its predecessors, but it did effectively max level the band. In the 1970’s they were a scuffling bar band that hit it big. In the 1980’s they were one of the most popular bands of the MTV generation. And in the 1990’s they achieved superstardom. They had hit the level where it truly no longer mattered if they ever released new material again. They could simply tour on their back catalogue alone and sell out stadiums.
It is clear that the band realized this as well. In the thirty years since Recycler came out, they have released five albums of new material: Antenna in 1994, Rhythmeen in 1996, XXX in 1999, Mescalero in 2003 and the critically acclaimed and Rick Rubin produced La Futura in 2012. This was equivalent to their output in their first six years.
In contrast, they have released no less than eight greatest hits albums, cover albums and live albums in the same time span. Greatest Hits came out in 1992. One Foot in the Blues was released in 1994. The massive compilation Chrome, Smoke & BBQ came out in 2003, and is a fantastic place to start if you are a new fan. Rancho Texicano was released in 2004, Live from Texas came out in 2008, and Double Down Live hit shelves in 2009. Live at Montreaux came out in 2013 and Tonite at Midnight: Live Greatest Hits from Around the World was released in 2016.
As recently as 2019, there were rumors that a new album was in the works for our Septuagenarian heroes. Lord knows the boys from Texas have nothing left to prove to anyone.
It was then that tragedy struck. Dusty Hill had to leave the band during a tour in 2021. The reason given was a hip injury. His guitar tech, Elwood Francis, filled in. Shockingly, Hill died at home at the age of 72 just five days after leaving the tour.
Fans were shocked and mourned the stalwart bassist. Per his wishes - and it seems he knew something wasn’t quite right - ZZ Top did not break up. Francis replaced Hill on bass, and the band soldiered on. In 2022, they released Raw, a soundtrack for a 2019 documentary about them. This was Hill’s final release.
You can still catch them on tour. They are going to be out there this summer, touring with Lynyrd Skynyrd, for something they are calling ‘The Sharp Dressed Simple Man’ Tour.

The Reverend Billy F. Gibbons was a big part of the Lullabies to Paralyze album by our Desert Dwellers. He played guitar and provided backing vocals on Burn the Witch. He was co-lead vocalist and lead guitar on the QotSA cover of Precious and Grace, which he originally released as a ZZ Top tune on the Tres Hombres album. He also provided the guitar stylings for Like a Drug.
But the connections don't stop there. Billy sang the lead vocal track on the recent Desert Sessions tune Move Together, and he played guitar on Noses in Roses, Forever.
What may be most important to QotSA fans is that Gibbons was the first person, almost two years ago, who hinted that Queens were working on a new album.
And now we know he was right. Never doubt a Reverend.

Hello all.
I am 10 days postpartum (emergency cesarean section) and I just received this text message from my “husband”. We are separated (ie not in talking terms, not living together etc) but not yet legally divorced.
“My name,
I have just been informed of the safe delivery of my child. Congratulations. I hope you are doing well. Please provide me the location of my children so I can see them.”
How do I respond to it?
Ps: HE knows where we are because I informed him via text in Jan where we were moving to, HE is familiar with the friend we are currently staying with, HE sent me a disappearing WhatsApp message with a screenshot of the address we are currently at while threatening me to stop playing games (whatever that means) and HE sent a birthday gift to our daughter to this same address in February. He wanted to come and pick up our daughter for a whole weekend back in February and I refused (because it was the weekend we just moved to Houston- we moved Thursday and he wanted to pick her up on friday-, she was starting daycare that Monday for the 1st time and we needed to settle in. Plus I was afraid he would take her to Austin where he moved to, I did not and still do not have his new address and I would not have been able to go to Austin to get her back)
Background: i married a manipulative and abusive narcissist and our marriage has deteriorated to a point of no-return mainly cos I finally chose myself over trying to make the marriage work. Without going into much details. He moved out on his own at the end of December while I was 5 months pregnant and left me with our 22 month old. He moved to Austin (5 hours away). Since I had no help and family left, I had to ask my job for a transfer to Houston where I had social support (friends). Myself and our daughter have been living with a friend since February. My “husband” knows this friend because I introduced him to all my friends and she had been to our old home multiple times. My “husband” has not provided any financial support whatsoever since he moved out. Our home in the old city was put up for sale and he refused to contribute to the bills while the house (in both our names) is still on the market so I have been footing all the bills: childcare, medical (cos he removed our daughter from his insurance after he moved) and household bills (mortgage, electric, water and gas) all on my own (thanks to credit cards).
He has not contributed a cent towards childcare for our now 2+ year old or towards the hospital bill for the new baby. I have not heard from him since February when we had the below conversation
“Me: You claimed our daughter again in your tax return this year even though you are not contributing anything to her upkeep, removed her from your insurance and have completely ignored all messages about helping with bills.”
“Him: Not true. It was You who ignored my messages, refused to provide information of the whereabouts of daughter, alienating and preventing me from seeing her. Keep playing your silly games. We will see how it goes.”
So I need to know how to respond to the message I posted above. Please remember that I am just 10 days post cesarean section and this is the first I am hearing from him in 4 months. Thank you

2023.06.02 12:04 No-Preference2841 Always feel like I’m gonna have a heart attack.

I hope this type of post is allowed, I just need to vent. I’ve never really had anxiety before but a year ago now I had a really terrifying high where I thought I was having a heart attack and was about to die. I didn’t call anyone because I didn’t want them to know what I was doing, I just huddled in the corner shaking for like an hour, scariest experience of my life.
Anyway ever since then I almost constantly feel like I’m about to just drop dead, I know my heart is fine but I don’t go anywhere anymore because it happens every time I leave my house, it’s like everything around me turns into a blur and all I can feel is every single beat of my heart and it scares the hell out of me every time. It’s to the point where I can’t even distract myself anymore, it happened mid conversation with someone the other day and it happened while I was playing pool, it doesn’t matter what I’m doing. Every single day, without fail. It’s like this fog that takes over my brain for a few seconds, it’s hard to describe. It’s like my chest hurts but I know it’s psychosomatic, it feels fake.
I thought it would go away on its own but it’s just been getting worse. Gonna talk to my psych about it next time I see her. IDK if anyone is even gonna see this or care, just needed to get this off my chest cause I haven’t told anybody.

ABSOLUTE DREAM: "A friend and I visited my boyfriend while he was doing security at a jazz festival in Malibu. He told us Adam Sandler and his family had been there all day and tons of people took pictures with him. We ran back to the car to grab the digital camera, looked up, and saw Adam, his pregnant wife Jackie, and their toddler leaving. We went up to them. Adam was clearly done for the day, but his wife said, 'Honey, let me hold [toddler's name] and you can take a picture.' We handed him the camera and he took a selfie with us. Still have that picture on my fridge. Love the Sandman!"
TOTAL NIGHTMARE: "My little cousin played one of Rob Schneider's kids in 50 First Dates. Rob was stuck-up, never got to know the children or their parents, and always went straight to his dressing room. I'm an introvert, so I like my alone time to recharge, but apparently the vibes he was giving off were that he couldn't be bothered to care about anyone else there. Also, the little girl in the movie was apparently a spoiled brat who threw tantrums and made them have to redo so many takes. I can see why Rob maybe didn't want to play with her, but the other kids were great!"
ABSOLUTE DREAM: "My husband met Rihanna years ago and said she was super nice. He was working as a ground handler at an airport and was setting up something on the ramp for her private plane. She came out, approached him, asked him about his job, and they chatted for a few minutes. Not sure if she was killing time until the gate opened, or if she went out of her way to talk to him for the heck of it, but he had nothing but nice things to say about her."
ABSOLUTE DREAM: "I met Jerry Springer while bartending almost 20 years ago. He was thinking of getting back into politics and had a meeting in our private dining room on the second floor. It was happy hour and the bar was packed. Someone spotted him and started chanting, 'JERRY, JERRY,' while he was about to walk up the stairs. He then came to the bar, ordered a $2 beer, walked through the entire bar, shook hands, and took pictures. When he finished the loop, he set the full beer on the bar and handed me $40. Regardless of his show, I will always think of him as a class act."
ABSOLUTE DREAM: "My story is that I was actually horrible to a celebrity. In the '70s, I was obsessed with Donny and Marie. They were playing at our state fair that year. My dad tried to get tickets, but it was sold out. He took us to the fair anyway. A few times we could hear the music, which infuriated me at 7 years old. When we were leaving, my dad had to stop the car because there was a big crowd of people. As they cleared to let us through, two people popped their heads in the car window to apologize. It was Donny and Marie. I refused to believe it was really them, and I told Marie, 'You're not Marie. She's a lot prettier than you.' My family was horrified."
ABSOLUTE DREAM: "Hands down nicest celebrity I've ever met was Taylor Swift. I met her at a concert as part of her security at the Houston shows. She was polite and introduced herself to everyone. She was obviously very busy, but she seemed interested in what I had to say and signed an album cover for my son."
ABSOLUTE DREAM: "I have been lucky enough to meet Sir Ian McKellen twice: once after a performance where I also met Simon Callow and Patrick Stewart, and once during his tour of 80 shows for turning 80. Absolutely lovely man. He is my #1 dream dinner guest. I wish I was his friend."

I went inside and placed my order, and a guy in a white jumpsuit with a white bandana tied around his head came in. There weren't that many people in the restaurant, but he stopped and signed autographs and was chatting everyone up when I left. It wasn't until a few years later that I realized that person was Steven Tyler. This was in the late '80s before Aerosmith had that string of hits."
ABSOLUTE DREAM: "The most genuine interaction I've ever had with a celeb was with Bert Kreischer. I saw a show (during which he mentioned his grandma was in the hospital). Then, he told the audience he would be going to the bar next door after the show if anyone wanted a picture. When he arrived at the bar, he waded through CROWDS of people and made sure everyone who wanted to was able to get a pic or a moment with him. I stayed at the bar for a drink until he was on his way out (by this time the crowd had dispersed). I called out as he passed, 'Hey, I didn't get a chance to say it before, but I hope your grandma does well.' He stopped, turned around, and had a very genuine conversation with me."
ABSOLUTE DREAM: "Jason Momoa was really fun to meet in person when I saw him at a Nine Inch Nails show. Really fun guy!"
ABSOLUTE DREAM: "Jennifer Lopez. I went to where they were filming Air last year (I live in LA) because I wanted to meet Ben Affleck. I met Matt Damon as he wrapped before he left. He was a SUPER nice guy. I waited for Ben as his Escalade pulled up, but I DID NOT expect JLO to get out. She got out right next to me. She was only with her driver and he didn’t tell me to move or anything, so when she got out, I was like ‘Jen! Can I get a picture?' and she said sure. We talked about Selena because I’m Latina and she’s super important to me, and the movie means so much to me. She was SOO nice and sweet. She didn’t give any vibes that I was annoying her or that she had to Go. We also spoke in Spanish. We took our picture and then she went inside to get Ben. When they got out, Ben was NOT HAPPY (I don’t blame him. He was acting and directing), so I just stepped aside."
ABSOLUTE DREAM: "In 2004, I met Tony Curtis. He exuded 'old Hollywood.' He made his way around the room, speaking to each person, and when he approached me, he extended his hand and held my hand through the entire conversation. He focused on our conversation as if there was no one else in the room. As we said goodbye (he was still holding my hand), he raised my hand to his lips and kissed it. He was dressed impeccably and was in fine form. I have had many celebrity encounters, but nothing rises to the level of Tony Curtis. Absolutely the best celebrity encounter I've ever had."
ABSOLUTE DREAM: "I met Sir Patrick Stewart at the Peabody Hotel in Orlando. We were both hanging out with friends in the lobby. He told stories, made lots of jokes with his friends, and included us in the conversation."
ABSOLUTE DREAM: "I went to college with Muhammad Ali's twin daughters. He came with them for move-in day, and they arrived in a chauffeured Rolls Royce. He was gracious and took as many pictures and signed as many autographs as people wanted. I even have a picture where he is pretending to punch me. I told him that I grew up down the street from the house he had in Chicago before he donated it to the Nation of Islam. He asked me if they were good neighbors and laughed when I told him not really."
TOTAL NIGHTMARE: "My sister met Katy Perry at a restaurant, but she was being rude to the bartender and all the employees who came over to help, so now my niece and nephew aren't allowed to listen to her music."
ABSOLUTE DREAM: "I met Tori Amos, and she was an absolute sweetie pie. She hugged me and told me she liked my shirt. We spoke briefly. I was starstruck, but it made a lasting impression on me."
ABSOLUTE DREAM: "I grew up in a tiny town (pop. 3,000), and every year for his twins' birthday dinner, Michael J. Fox would bring his whole family to the restaurant my mom worked at. She almost always ended up being their server and she said he (and his family) were the nicest people. They were unobtrusive, friendly, and excellent tippers."
ABSOLUTE DREAM: "James Earl Jones was super sweet. My father and I met him when I was young. His voice is deep, but sweet!"

ABSOLUTE DREAM: "Nicest celebrity I've ever met was Cole Sprouse. This was way before when he probably got sick of being on Riverdale and decided to just show his true colors. He took the photo of us together because I was shaking from nerves and excitement."
ABSOLUTE DREAM: "I was a bartender at the Troubadour for five years and have so many stories! Jeff Bridges was the first celeb I met. His band was playing. Before we opened, after his sound check, he made a point of coming down to us bartenders to introduce himself and thank us for helping out that night. SUCH A GEM!"
ABSOLUTE DREAM: "Jason Schwartzman came into the bar I worked in on a night that had a bunch of teenage bands playing and was super sweet to any of the kids who came up to him."
ABSOLUTE DREAM: "When I was young, I went to an Olivia Newton-John concert. I grew up watching Grease on repeat and had always loved her. At the concert, me and another young girl were invited on stage to give her flowers and introduce ourselves. On stage, l asked to get her autograph and she told me she would after the show. Post-concert, I waited with my family to get an autograph and she invited me and my dad into her fitting room and no one else. Once back there, I was so starstruck and amazed that she remembered my name! She was so kind and took pictures with me and my dad, signed a photo, gave me the set list, and wrapped it up by giving me a hug and kiss on the cheek. She spent probably an hour with us just hanging out in her room and chatting. To this day, it's one of my most cherished memories."

Hello all, I have a bit of an interesting situation and I need some ideas for summer. I have a part time nanny share going, watching MB and DB’s grandkids about 13.5 hours a week. This is a recent thing and has worked really well during the school year while the older of my NKs were in school, but now that summer is here I know I’m going to struggle. My full time NKs are 9b, 7b, and 5b, part time are 2g and 7mob. I have honestly no idea how to make this work for the summer, NF doesn’t live in a walkable neighborhood and I don’t have a big enough car for all NKs to travel somewhere. NF has a pool that we can use during the day, I just worry about my full time NKs getting cabin fever and trying to balance the baby’s schedule with the needs of my other NKs. Does anyone have any suggestions for a schedule or activities that could be suitable for summer? I happily agreed to this share, I just didn’t really think ahead for how things would work over the summer. Any advice or suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I would rather grind 10 hours for a single level than be able to level up every 5 minutes, but when I die I go back to level 1. I absolutely hate losing my stuff. The only way to make a rouge like good is to have permanent unlocks that you can get that carry over, I have three games I can think of that do this well

In last place is “For the king” a dungeons and dragons esque turn based RPG, with online and local co op. While playing you will get a currency that allows you to unlock new buildings that have a CHANCE to appear, new items that have a CHANCE to appear, new events that have a CHANCE to appear, and new classes. So far, out of all the unlocks, only one thing (the wood cutter class) has been really good, and another thing (A market that opens up at night) has been decent. Everything else is like a chance for a minor upgrade, that BARELY has a chance to appear anyway (I’ve yet to run into most of the stuff I’ve unlocked, and other than the night market and a carnival which sucks, I’ve ran into the others like once or twice). So far only one item has been slightly good, which I haven’t run into yet, and every other item is like 3 damage more than your starting weapon
The middle game, “Dead Cells” a hollow knight esque 2D hack and slasher. You collect “Cells” which you can use to get permanent upgrades to your kit that take immediate effect, such as being able to get one free (or more) healing potions each time you reach the safe room that’s at the end of each level, being able to buy new weapons, that unlike “For the king”, have a very good chance of showing up, and being able to start out with a random weapon in your weapon pool.
The best game “The Guided Fate Paradox” an anime game that is very much like the Disgaea series. This one does it perfect, while in dungeons you start at level 1, and you have to pick up gear. If at any time you die you go back to level 1 and lose your gear. However using certain items you can leave the dungeon and stash gear in a box so that if you die you won’t have to go back to using your fists with no armor. Also everytime you die (and I believe when you finish the dungeon) you do go back to level 1, however depending on how high your level got on your current run it will increase your base stats that never go away. So if on your first run you start with 10 attack, then make it to level 10 with 50 attack, when you die and start over you will be at level 1 with 13 attack, and by the time you get to level 10 again your attack will be 53 or higher. This doesn’t sound like much but it stacks and becomes amazing. I almost like this mechanic more than just regular leveling up

Ch5 Cartography and copper
As the sun rises over the horizon, casting its warm glow upon the rugged landscape, I find myself thinking that I need a new purpose after finishing my tools and home. With shelter, tools, a fucking bed, and what food I can find with the goblins gone. I need something to do. The time has come to unravel the mysteries that lie beyond the confines of these stone walls and the close area. Armed with crude stone tools , plant fiber woven "clothes", and my map ability. I embark on a journey to explore and document the surrounding area. maybe just maybe I will find evidence of people.
With each step I take, I carefully memorize my path, marking the terrain, the landmarks, and the animal trails. The map slowly takes shape, capturing the essence of the topology . It becomes a tangible representation of my growing knowledge, a tool that will guide me through the land that I will claim as my own.
As I venture deeper into the unknown, my senses sharpen along with my mapping skills, when I finally feel attuned to the subtle changes in the environment I seemingly get a passive skill pop-up.

It is during one of my explorations in the next month that I stumble upon a surface deposit of copper—a glimmering deep green spike made of smaller spikes amidst the trees, it nearly blends in . Excitement courses through my veins as I realize the significance of this discovery. Copper ore and a lot of it. Or that's what I think it is.

With a new project I go home and make a fiber backpack and baskets to carry as much as I can. Eventually I make my way back and start to gather the copper ore, carefully examining its quality and potential, from what I can tell it's almost pure. I did break a few of my chisels collecting enough but I planned ahead and made extra heads. The weight of the metal on my back fuels my ambition, igniting a spark of creativity within me. I must learn and practice the art of metallurgy, for in these raw materials lies the power to forge actual weapons and craft more intricate tools.
Returning to my home, next step is set up a makeshift forge, utilizing the stone chisels and a roaring fire to create a crucible. With a mix of anticipation and trepidation, then I need something to move the crucible with like leather gloves. The harder I work the more eager I am to transform it into something greater.
To get started I find a creak near my cave and search for clay and sand. After I bring enough back I mix it in with wood ash for mortar. Next I collect some nice granite rocks from the hillside and wash the dirt off. I use the old fire pit from the goblins for my forge. After mortaring the rock floor and making a rock circle and mortaring them together until I have a nice big dome with a chimney stack on top. Then I put wood in it and light it. And I keep it lit for about 2 days to solidify the mortar.
In the time I have watching my forge cook I grab a nice big rock and chisel it into a deep bowl shape. Then I chisel the best handle holds so i can to pull it out of the fire. When it's done my forge is cooled down. So I then check if it fits into the forge. It is not perfect but I can make it work.
Next is tools I need tongs, gloves, hammer ,ladle, and molds. starting with the tongs I would love metal tongs but I need tongs to make them from metal. I can see why the Jews thought god gave man his first set. but I'll have to live with a wood set first. This takes no time at all with my new skill and knife to work a set into shape. Turns out it can level up too might be worth my time, I'd love an instrument I need music.
Next my gloves lucky me I've been hunting a lot since the wildlife came back and have leftover pelts I've been working on and now is better than ever so I set to making some leather i might be able to go for real clothes soon if I can get something bigger than a rabbit.
After cleaning the old fat off with a knife and stretching it with a wood frame, and boiling the hair off in the boiling spring in the pool room. when it's dried out and is ready I use leather strips and make real shity leather mittens. They will work not perfect but at least they will hold for a few uses.
The hammer is super simple I make it same as my axe with the exception that I keep the rock big and solid.
Next a ladle for impurities and pouring it. My last forge tool starts with a stone ladle head with my chisel and then a soak in water to wash off the dust and make a hole for a handle to slot into. Then I work some wood into a handle, it's pretty easy. The I use sap and leather strips to bind the handle to the stone ladle head.
Last is simple a mold, I make a small wood frame box and fill it with wet sand. Then I carve a wood ingot and add air holes for the steam to boil out of. And a unclip able hinge to spit it in half for later.

after getting all my supplies set up and ore in my crucible I start on the fire .Hours pass as I tend to the fire, carefully controlling its intensity. After putting the crucible in the forge The copper begins to melt, its molten form shimmering with potential after I ladle out the impurities and rock left. After pulling the crucible out I carefully pour the liquid metal into a simple mold, allowing it to cool and solidify steam boiling out of the air holes. Then The moment of truth arrives as I retrieve the newly forged copper ingot.
Examining the result of my efforts, I am filled with a sense of accomplishment. The copper, once hidden beneath green oxidization, has now been shaped by my hands. It serves as a testament to my growing skills and resourcefulness in this harsh world.
With the first successful forging behind me, I am eager to delve deeper into the art of metallurgy. The possibilities are endless, and the rewards of mastering this craft are boundless. The once-humble cave, now transformed into a true home, will soon echo with the clanging of hammers and the rhythmic pounding of metal against metal.
As I continue to explore, map, and forge, my understanding of this world expands. Each discovery fuels my determination to thrive in this unforgiving realm. The journey is far from over, and the challenges ahead may be daunting, but I am prepared to face them head-on.
And so, armed with my newly mapped out area and the power of metallurgy in my hands, I embark on the next chapter of my adventure. The world awaits, brimming with untold secrets and hidden treasures, ready to be unveiled by the resilient spirit of William, the defender of his sanctuary.

Hi! I have checked the internet and asked my husband but can‘t find the answer I‘m hoping for. Back home where I‘m from, we‘ve spent the day at the swimming pool every other Saturday. These pools often have several pools, such as a wave pool, one with a lazy river, slides etc., as well as whirlpools, steam rooms, saunas, kid‘s pools etc. We‘d usually go in the morning, find some lounge chairs to put our stuff on (create a base) and then spend the day swimming, relaxing, playing card games, reading, sometimes napping. In between we‘d eat at the restaurant that‘s at the pool (you don‘t have to leave the pool or change for it, you eat in your swim clothes) or bring a picnic to eat at your seats. Entry varies depending on the pool, can be between 8 to 30€. I want to point out that this isn‘t at all an uncommon experience. Almost every town has pools like this, some are more basic of course (and cheaper), but for all of them you can essentially stay all day. I have yet to find this experience in Scotland. I miss spending the day at the pool. Most pools here expect you to leave after a couple of hours and there is no food allowed, can‘t bring a picnic either, there is nothing to lounge on next to the pool to read a book or play a card game before dipping back in. Please, if anybody knows of a pool like this in Scotland, could you let me know? I miss this experience so much!

As I sit at the edge of a stream near the entrance of my cave i Cast my gaze upon the tranquil scenery, I realize that it holds a newfound significance for me. It has provided me with sustenance, a source of water, and now a temporary respite from the stress of constant work. The fish continue their rhythmic dance in the water.
I reach for my fishing spear, determined to catch a meal to replenish my strength. As I prepare to strike, I hear a faint rustling from the nearby bushes. Instinctively, I grip the spear tighter and scan the surroundings. The eyes of the goblins still haunt my thoughts, reminding me that danger lurks even in the most peaceful moments.
Instead of a goblin that emerges from the brush. It is a creature unlike any I have encountered before—a majestic white pearlescent stag with antlers that seem to reach towards the heavens. Its eyes are filled swirling waves of a blue wisdom and a green of serenity that I have rarely witnessed.
The stag approaches the stream, its graceful movements leaving me in awe. It drinks from the water with a glowing reflection shimmering in the gentle ripples. I watch in silence, a mix of reverence and curiosity stirring within me. Could this be a sign? A guiding presence in this harsh world?
The stag lifts its head, its gaze meeting mine. For a brief moment, time stands still. And then, as if acknowledging my presence, it takes a step closer, its hooves barely making a sound on the soft earth.

Inside the cave, I take stock of my resources. Though limited, they are enough to begin the task at hand. And get to work smoothing down the hard stone again until it is the right shape. Then heat up the rock in my fore and then drip cold water along the edge to shatter bits off to make a sharp edge. Then I find the largest bone in the bone pile seemingly a femur and with some work and supplies I bind them together. Lastly I char the bone to seal it.

Using this makeshift tool, I venture into the surrounding forest, seeking sturdy trees suitable for reinforcement. With each swing of the axe, I feel a sense of empowerment. The axe bites into the wood, and with each felled tree, I feel like it's getting easier. Then chopping the tree into logs and branches. I gather logs and branches, forming a stockpile near the cave entrance. I return multiple times, driven by a relentless determination to create a formidable barrier against any future onslaught. I also collect large rocks from the nearby riverbed, utilizing them to strengthen the cave's entrance.
Hours turn into days as I toil, the sweat mingling with the dirt on my brow. With each passing moment, the cave transforms into a sanctuary that reflects my resilience. The once-vulnerable entrance is now fortified with thick logs and sturdy rocks, creating a formidable barrier that would give even the most determined goblin pause.
As I stand back to survey my handiwork, a sense of accomplishment washes over me. The cave, once a mere shelter, has evolved into a stronghold—a testament to my will to survive and protect what is mine. The scars on my body are mirrored in the scars on the land, each a reminder of the battles fought and won.
With the physical defenses in place, I turn my attention to the interior of the cave. I make a simple stone chisel with a replaceable head and useing the same sharp stone, I shape smaller logs into makeshift furniture—a crude bed, a rough-hewn table, and even a shelf to store my meager belongings. I carve niches into the walls to hold torches, their flickering light banishing the shadows that once haunted this place.
As I sit on my newly crafted bed, a flicker of the white stag's presence dances in my mind. I realize that my soul has been blessed with a simple yet useful ability—a keen intuition that guides me in times of danger. It is as if the spirit of the white stag has bestowed upon me a heightened sense of awareness, allowing me to anticipate danger before it strikes.

With the cave fortified and made livable, I find a moment of respite. I lay on my rough bed, the scars on my body throbbing with both pain and pride. HOME This designation partains to places meant for long term living not just survival and can have major improvements and is meant for months to years of living. Many improvements can be made, few expansions can be made tho and only minor differences can be erected. If major improvements are made until there are none left to make and all minor traps are established then it will automatically move into the [BASE] designation. This designation can trigger only minor events.
There now seems to be a few tabs available to me including (defenses),(furniture),(waist room),(pool room),(the pit),(main room)

I close my eyes, allowing the exhaustion to wash over me, knowing that tomorrow will bring new challenges. But with the wisdom of the stag etched into my soul and the strength of my defenses surrounding me, I find solace in the knowledge that I am prepared. And with 5 stat points I should be able to see a difference after using them.
The goblins may regroup and seek revenge, or another threat can raise it's ugly head but they will find a changed man awaiting them—a warrior with a fortified sanctuary, a soul.

Intro

In this post I will discuss how you can utilize this NPC to improve your multitool hunting. Below, I divulge the never-before revealed secret that determines which class of multitool he gives you.

Who is the Armorer?

The Armorer is a hire-able Vy'keen NPC who you can hire to man a Weapons Terminal at one of your bases, including your freighter base.

How do you get a free multitool from the Armorer?

After you've completed a series of quests that he gives you, the Armorer will start offering you a free multitool, which he says that he has made "in your honor".

Daily Quest

The armorer's free multitool interaction is considered a "daily quest" in the game files.
This is one of several daily quests available in No Man's Sky from various NPCs. Each of the base NPCs goes into an endless loop of daily quests that they offer.
In the NMS save file, each quest has a "recurrence" time, after which the quest will reset. Inspecting the save file, you will find the recurrence time is a unix timestamp for the next occurrence of 3:00 AM GMT (8:00 PM PDT) after the last time the game was saved.
For example, if you open your save on Tuesday at 4:45 PM PDT on Jan 1, then the timestamp will be for 8:00 PM PDT the same day. If you open that save on Feb. 21 at 9:34 PM PDT, then the recurrence timestamp will be updated on all the daily quests to Feb. 22 at 8:00 PM PDT.
For certain daily quests, you can only do it once per day, such as the quest given by the exocraft NPC in your base (he sends you to an abandoned building).
However for the armorer's daily quest, the recurrence deadline is when the class of multitool he offers, changes. That is because the recurrence timestamp is also used as the seed value for the procedural generation of the class of tool given by the Armorer.

Example of a Guaranteed S-Class Date for the Armorer

I have discovered that certain recurrence timestamps/seed values will cause the Armorer to consistently give an S-class tool from most pools.
On Memorial Day 2023 (May 29), I noticed that no matter what system I flew to, I kept getting S-class tools from the Armorer aboard my freighter. Once or twice he offered an A-class, but almost everywhere it was an S. The next day, however, he went back to offering B-class. The day after that, C-class.
I have also seen him give S-class, A-class, B-class, etc. on different days in the past, but never knew what it was tied to. For a long time, I thought it was due to where he was, but it turns out, it's due to "when!"

Risk-Free Way to find a Guaranteed S-Class Date for the Armorer

Here is the risk-free way that I advise everyone to start using to find and spread the word whenever we discover a next S-class day for the armorer.
Simply visit the armorer at least once every day aboard your freighter whenever you warp into a system, and see if he's offering an S-class tool. If he is, please post about it on reddit either here or in nmscoordinateexchange. Since the date seems to be the same across all saves and players, that way everyone can know when it's happening and take advantage to get a free S-class multitool!

What NOT To Do

Please don't manipulate your console's date or timestamps within your save files unless you really know what you're doing.
Warning: manually changing your system date to sometime in the future does not seem to work for checking whether those dates will have a guaranteed S-class dates. Even if someone can figure out how to make it work, setting your system date forward and running NMS will cause it to update many unrelated timestamps in your save file using that future date. This can totally mess up your farms, refiners, settlement income, and other time-based aspects of the game, ask me how I know! So I highly advise against using manual date-setting to future dates for any reason.
If, despite this, someone really wants to know the steps to verify that I'm not bullshitting you, then read on.

For Advanced Players: Steps to Verify the Guaranteed S-Class Date Without Modding Save Files

After a lot of experimentation on PC using the NMS Save Editor, I discovered that you can temporarily (for up to 24 hours) make the Armorer almost always give an S-class by tricking the game into thinking that it's sometime after 8PM on May 28, 2023, and before 8PM on the following day, and ensuring the recurrence deadline for the daily quests is on 8PM PDT May 29, 2023. (I'm sure there are other dates that work too, just don't know what they are.)
A way to do this without hacking save files is as follows.
Disclaimer: do not open an existing save file while your console has the incorrect date. This can seriously screw up your save. Also, back up your No Man's Sky saves before trying this method, as I can't promise that it won't have an unintended consequence. To minimize the risk, only work with a fresh save if you're going to experiment with this. (Also, using an existing save you've opened recently won't work, because the game will only ever set the recurrence date can only be set to a time in the future once it has been exceeded.) The below steps are offered purely for experimental purposes by experienced and tech-savvy users who know how to make backups of saves and/or who are comfortable losing their save data if they screw up. Messing with dates can certainly impact save file syncing. You have been warned.

Disable the internet on your computer or console and force-quit No Man's Sky if it's running.
Set the date and time manually to 8:01 PM PDT (or equivalent in your timezone) on May 28, 2023. (The equivalent in GMT would be 3:01 AM on May 29, 2023.)
Launch No Man's Sky and start a new save. (Creative Mode is fastest).
Once you have a freighter with a Weapons Terminal in the base, recruit an Armorer to work there.
Go through all the Armorer's quests until they start offering a free multitool.
Warp to an inhabited star system that's not a pirate system.
Talk to the armorer aboard your freighter. He will offer an S-class multitool. (In some rare cases, it will be A-class, but if you repeat step 6 many times, you will find that it's almost always an S-class.)

Note: for some reason, the armorer gives a C-class tool if you're in:

a pirate system
certain uninhabited systems that appear to have red conflict level in the galaxy map (probably, systems that would be pirate systems if they were inhabited)

Steps to Verify the Guaranteed S-Class Date By Modding Save Files (PC only)

Disclaimer: I do not endorse cheating or manipulation of save files. The below steps are offered purely for experimental purposes by experienced and tech-savvy users who know how to make backups of saves and/or who are comfortable losing their save data if they screw up. Messing with dates can certainly impact Steam save file syncing. Modding your multitool to be an S-class is much safer. You have been warned.
Do steps 1. and 2. above, then do the below steps instead of the above steps:

Back up all your saves.
Using NMS Save Editor by goatfungus (available on Github), open the PC save file in NMS Save Editor. Be sure to use a save in which you have an armorer in your freighter base who is offering the free multitool.
Export the save file to JSON.
Open the exported save file using a text editor such as Microsoft VS Code.
Search for the text, "DM_WEAPON" -- this takes you to the mission data for the "daily mission" (DM) for the free multitool ("weapon").
Select the numbers after "Seed:". Press control-c to copy. This is your save's current "recurrence deadline" for the daily quests.
Press control-H for search and replace.
Click in the Find box, and press control-V to paste in the existing recurrence timestamp value.
Click in the Replace box, and type in 1685415600 (8:00 PM, May 29, 2023, Memorial Day).
Press alt-A to replace all occurrences of the prior recurrence time with 1685415600.
Press control-S to save.
Close out of your text editor and go back to the NMS Save Editor.
Select "Import from JSON" and select the file you just modified in the text editor.
Once it imports, then click "Save Changes" in NMS Save Editor.
Each save slot in NMS has two saves associated with it, the Autosave and the Restore Point. Make sure you perform steps 15 and 16 on BOTH the Autosave and the Restore Point.
Open No Man's Sky. Load the save you just modified.
Warp to an inhabited star system that's not a pirate system.
Talk to the armorer aboard your freighter. He will offer an S-class multitool. (In some rare cases, it will be A-class, but if you repeat step 6 many times, you will find that it's almost always an S-class.)

Obviously this is a lot of steps, and it's much simpler to just find whatever style of multitool you want, then use NMS Save Editor to modify it to be S-class, if you're OK with cheating. The above steps are just provided for people who want to further experiment and study the details of how the class of the armorer's multitool is determined.
Note: I did test this method on two different play-throughs on different systems, under different gamertags, but it's possible that the dates that work for me won't work for you. I'm not sure if there could be other factors.

What are Multitool 'Pools'?

While streaming on Twitch in May 2017, I discovered that restarting ones game on a certain planet X, then traveling to a different planet Y or space station, would cause the multitools available on that planet Y or space station to change to the ones that were available on the planet X on which you restarted your game. As well, the multitools available when first warping in or restarting in space, would carry over to any planet in the same system.
Having shared this on Twitch and on Discord, it wasn't long before this method spread and started being mentioned on Reddit. Later that year and in the following years, further refinements were made to this method. Eventually someone called these sets of multitool styles, "multitool pools", and the name stuck.
Note: while it's possible someone else independently discovered the same things I did, there's no evidence they did so before I streamed it and shared about it on Discord. So as far as I'm concerned, I'm the original discoverer of multitool pools.

How Multitool Class Relates to Multitool Pools

As others have found, a multitool has a "native" class of S, A, B, or C, and can only appear one class better or worse than its native class. For example, a tool that's natively B class can only appear as A, B, or C. A tool that's natively C class can only appear as B or C. A tool that's natively A class can only appear as S, A, or B.
Based on this you can use the Armorer to more quickly figure out what styles of tool are in a given pool. Using a base terminus at a temporary planetary base next to a wall box that gives one of the styles of tool in the current pool, warp to your freighter base and use the Armorer to check another. Since warping to the freighter from a planetary base takes just 5 seconds, this is much faster than traveling between different minor settlements. From the freighter you can also hit the space station in 5 seconds via terminus. Since traveling via terminus in the same system doesn't reset the current pool, this greatly speeds surveying.

I've never had to do this before, so hopefully I make this coherant.

I've been with my wife for 14 years - we nearly fell instantly in love, and spent all of our time together. I proposed shy of three years together in the fall, and we got married the following summer. We have three amazing kids together who we are both fully in love with. We live a relatively simple life - I work at a well-paying corporate job, she had held multiple jobs over the years and has always felt a strong sense of success. I wish I could say the same for me - I graduated college at once of the worst times for my generation and struggled with finding a solid career path. After a few years (before I proposed), I was lucky enough to get a temp job working for a Fortune 100 company and worked my way up over time. I never enjoyed my work, but always worked my butt off to be as successful as possible, knowing that there's always a "next thing" to shoot for.

Mild story break, but very important. Throughout both of our lives, my wife and I have struggled with our weights. I have spent the majority of my life very overweight (don't think 'My 600 Pound Life', but the really really fat guy you see at a pool), and she has always been very overweight as well. We've worked on our weights throughout our relationships (I was actually in relatively good shape when we met) but neither of us have ever had continued success. She actually had lap band early in our relationship (before marriage) and ended up having all the fluid removed in the second year, rendering the device useless. That being said, I never loved her any less and always made sure she knew this.

Last year, my wife had another (different) bariatic procedure done. For anyone not familiar with these surgeries, these are not taken lightly in the medical community - months of surgeon appointments, nutritionists, psych evaluations - and she did everything by the book. I continued to support her as she felt strongly about this. Since the procedure, she has lost ~70 pounds and is living a very active lifestyle.

Cutting back to me - a little good news on my career. I started a new role two years ago, and began to hate it pretty quickly. Leadership was weak, had no vision, and I was struggling to get through the day - something I saw in one of my previous roles. The first time, I ended up seeing a psychiatrist and was put on antidepressants. The antidepressants made it easier to live my life, but as a side effect I began to gain weight. I had to balance out liking the person I felt like, and the person I looked like. I ended up being the heaviest I had been in my life, and stopped taking the pills and seeing the doctor (FWIW, I never really liked the doctor, he was fine but seemed like a means to a prescription). I've come back down in weight and have remained stable since then - but am still morbidly obese.

I PROMISED good news - at my current job in the last year leadership changed, we re-orged, and leadership is working directly with me to build a career I love. I didn't think these kind of things could happen, but I'm actually happy with my job - I get up in the morning and look forward to taking on the day. Over the last few months, I've gone to conferences and I'm building a vision for the work I've been assigned. This happiness has bloomed in the last three months. Last week I shared my one year plan for the company with leadership and they were so impressed, they've asked me to bump the plan to three years. I shared this news with my wife and she seemed happy for me.

This week has been rough, I can tell something has been different with my wife, and she seems distant. I know she sometimes has extreme hormone swings based on a non-threatening medical condition she has (I want to be very clear, this is a real thing, I'm not trying to be snarky) and assumed she is having an 'episode' - these usually last a few days and her body normalizes itself out. I pulled back being overly emotional with her because it's usually a negative trigger, but after our youngest was asleep she sent the older kids to watch a movie and told me she wanted to talk to me.

Normally when we have issue with our relationship, we give it a few days and we share what's been bothering both of us. When she asked to talk, I immediately told her I am willing to talk, but truely have no issues to share with her. I shared what I just previously shared, which is I believe she's having an episode, and was trying to give her a little space. She began to tell me that with her weight loss, she has a new found confidence and feels like I'm dragging our family down. I never take the lead on planning active events for our family - we never have done this in the past - and she doesn't see me putting in the effort to lose weight that she is doing. I struggle with this for a few reasons:

1) I don't feel like bariatric surgery is for me. I am in no way opposed to it for people who want it, but I don't see bariatric surgery as a solution for me. It's just not my thing and is a major committment.

2) She has a job where she works limited hours, and works out everyday for two and a half hours. The gym has child care (for the baby) and once the big kids are on the bus, she goes to the gym and grinds super hard. I'm very proud of her for the work she puts in and I've shared this with her. I don't have the time to do that. I would either need to sacrifice my job (not happening) or go to the gym immediately after work and sacrifice the time with my kids (not ideal, IMO). I HAVE been working out 3-4 mornings a week in the basement, mostly cardio.

3) She does all the shopping in the house, and she shops relatively clean. She buys some snacks for the kids - but I don't eat those, and eat what she buys for "us". I'm sure in theory if I ate 1200 calories a day, I would lose weight, but I'd also drive myself crazy starving. I've tried every diet there is, and I've never found longterm success.

She also shared that she feels like I'm holding her back from doing hiking trips (I've never done so, we actually did a multi-night national park trip a few years back where we hiked multiple days) and doing things and she said she does not know if she can be with me if I don't share her new lifestyle.

I was shocked by this as I've supported her in everything she has done in her life, and based on the last eight months, she is willing to throw it all away. I froze at the opportunity to say I'll do whatever it takes because I don't have the confidence that her goals will be realistic for me (she struggled to really drill down what this all looks like for me). I ended up at a stalemate, bawled my eyes out, and told her I needed to think about things before I could talk more.

I spent a few hours reflecting and she said she wanted to talk more. This is where I'm really at a loss for words. She started going back to her original points she discussed, but then started bringing up how she was no longer satisfied sexually. She said sex with me is difficult (she never had a problem when she was larger) and she wants more in her sex life. She asked me if I would be interested in a threesome - which sounds like every guy's fantasy - but this was the most confusing part for her to bring this up here. This is something we had joked about a LONG time ago, and she never seemed interested in something like that. She said that she now fantasizes about someone holding her up during sex and I can't do that for her. I immediately said that absolutely that's not something I'm into with the context of our current situation. She then asked me what I thought about being in an open relationship - something we've never talked about, and something that truely hurt me. Again, for people who are in open relationships, that is fine, but not something I am interested in being a part of. I completely broke down with this and I feel like my world is collapsing down on me. I've already taken the day off work tomorrow, and don't even know what to do.

Am I crazy to not have jumped at her suggestion to "share her new lifestyle"? I feel like I'm setting myself up for failure by doing so without even really understanding what that is. How do I even go about figuring out what to do next? I am too embarrassed to talk to my friends about this, do I need a therapist to talk to? Couples therapy? I have no idea.

She's texted me since our last talk saying she loves me and always will, but I don't even know what to say to her back.

Any thoughts or advice would be greatly appreciated.

TL;DR - My wife has lost a significant amount of weight, and now she says she can't be with me if I can't adopt her "lifestyle"
