Sara Forden Answers our House of Gucci Questions
2022.09.08 13:16 creative-license Sara Forden Answers our House of Gucci Questions
The book is heavily researched. How long did it take you to write it and who gave you the best insight to Gucci? The book took 18 months to research and write. The last six months of my book leave were dedicated to copyediting the manuscript back and forth. There were many people who contributed insights to the depth and breadth of the story, many of whom are named in the Acknowledgements.
Are there any people you wish you could have interviewed but they declined or were otherwise unavailable? I asked to interview Patrizia Reggiani several times, but the judicial authorities always declined. I wrote to her in jail and she responded and so we started a jailhouse correspondence during which she answered my questions about her relationship with Maurizio and their lives together.
What was Maurizio Gucci like in person? Maurizio Gucci was extremely charming and charismatic. His passion for turning around his family company was so remarkable that he moved everyone he shared it with.
How did Adam do with his Maurizio accent? I know the accents became a point of contention in the reviews, but I didn't mind the accents. I also queried some of my most discerning Italian friends about the accents and they said they weren't bothered by them.
What was it like being in the courtroom every day for the trial? The trial was fascinating and revealed so many intimate details of the lives of Patrizia and Maurizio and their family that it was almost like theater.
Do you believe if Maurizio had never met Patriczia, the Gucci dynasty would still have managed to self-destruct, losing the company and their status in it? The family was disfunctional and in conflict before Patrizia, so it's possible that they could have still lost control of the company. But it's unlikely Maurizio would have died as a result.
I was so aghast that Patrizia was making threats against Maurizio prior to hiring someone to kill him. What are your thoughts as to why Maurizio or others close to him were not taking these threats seriously? It felt like it was obvious that Patrizia was obsessed and that Maurizio was in danger but there was not much done to protect him. Patrizia's lawyer at the time took it very seriously and sent her a letter ordering her to cease and desist. Unfortunately, that wasn't enough as you point out.
In your book, you show how Rodolfo didn't prepare Maurizio for the financial real world of being a Gucci. He managed Maurizio's money and made decisions for him. I was struck by the symbolic passing of Guccio's wallet with the English shilling in it to Maurizo when he died. You say Rodolfo is letting Maurizio know that he holds the purse strings now. Mau is unprepared for that. Why do you think Rodolfo didn't properly prepare Maurizio for that part growing up? Both Rodolfo and Aldo were very self-focused and patriarchal and their parenting styles were very top-down. It didn't even seem to occur to them to prepare the younger generations in any meaningful way to take over one day.
Gucci's founder Guccio comes off as determined to succeed but ethical. Gucci was first and foremost a family business to him. Why did his heirs stray from that example? That's a very interesting question. Perhaps because Guccio had come from such simple beginnings and knew the value of hard work and integrity because he had to build everything himself from nothing.
Did Maurizio Gucci also have a "spiritual advisor" similar to Patrizia's? Were they, as Adam Driver said in one or two interviews, in a way 'casting spells at' each other? Yes, Maurizio also had a psychic who he trusted and regularly sought her advice. He didn't use her to case spells, but more as a supportive person who listened to him.
How did you handle any personal accounts of events that contradicted one another? I tried to assess all sides of the story and find the truth somewhere in the middle.
What was your personal opinion of Paolo Gucci? Was he as much of a mess as he's portrayed in the film? I did my best to flesh out Paolo's character in the book based on accounts from people who knew him. I'd refer you to those passages for that assessment. HIs father Aldo described him like a thoroughbred horse who couldn't be controlled.
Maurizo got that Gucci needed changes. He hired Dawn Mello from BG. Mello knew Prada (you mean Gucci I assume?) had to be taken seriously. Gucci created the hobo bag. They made a Gucci school for training so all the peeps had the same strats. They made women's loafers cos they were buying the mens at flea markets. Maurizio brought on Tom Ford. These were all big changes that started a new direction for Gucci. And it's because of Maurizio. Why did it still go badly for him? Maurizio drastically overspent to achieve his dream, losing Investcorp's trust, so they forced him out.
Were you at the iconic Tom Ford for Gucci show in 1995? What were those shows like? Tom Ford's 1995 show for Gucci was electrifying. Everyone knew that Gucci was forever changed and it became the "must see" show for years thereafter.
Do you think Maurizio and Patrizia still loved each other in some sick twisted way or was it all just hatred at the end? I do believe they loved each other at the start.
Did you ever meet Patrizia and what was that like? I interviewed Patrizia in her penthouse apartment in Milan in 1993. She was furious with Maurizio for mismanaging Gucci and the interview was pure vitriol against him.
What happened to Sheree McLaughlin Loud, Maurizio's American ex-girlfriend? Why did she initially decline to be interviewed for House of Gucci, and how does she factor into Maurizio's love life and story? What do you think of her interviews after the movie's release? I can refer you to the story I wrote about her here:
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/features/2021-11-18/sheree-mclaughlin-girlfriend-in-house-of-gucci-murder-drama-speaks-out#:~:text=Sheree%20McLaughlin%20had%20a%20years,that%20would%20get%20him%20killed. Were you hired to work with the House of Gucci's movie team as a creative consultant? If so, what was your job working on adapting your book to a major motion picture like? I consulted on the screenplay, working with Roberto Bentivegna. I found him extremely talented and a pleasure to work with.
Have you read Allegra Gucci's book? If so, what was your impression of it? I read her Vanity Fair interview and found it very powerful.
Are you happy with Ridley's interpretation of her book? Would you have changed or added anything? Ridley Scott and the cast captured the arc and spirit of the part of my book that described the relationship between Maurizio and Patrizia and the family dynamics that surrounded them. It was an incredible experience to see my work interpreted by that level of talent and passion for the story. Thank you for all the great questions and for your interest in my work!

| Dubai World Cup The Dubai World Cup, the final race of Dubai World Cup night, was created in 1996 by Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai who owns Darley Stud & Godolphin Racing, one of the world's leading Thoroughbred breeding and contending operations. The Dubai World Cup is a Thoroughbred steed race held annually since 1996 and queried at the Meydan Racecourse which in Arabic suggests a place where people congregate and contend, a kind of meeting point in the Emirate of Dubai, United Arab Emirates. The race is operated through the Emirates Racing Authority ( Period) whose Chairman is Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Presidential Affairs of the United Arab Emirates. It offers nine races, conforming of eight Thoroughbred contests and one Purebred Arabian contest. Annually held on the last Saturday in March, the Dubai World Cup is part of the Dubai World Cup Night of races. Since its 2019 handling, the race has carried a bag of$ 12 million, recovering its place as the world's richest steed race, a record held by the Pegasus World Cup in 2017 and 2018. It's a Group 1 flat race on dirt for Northern Hemisphere Thoroughbred four-time- pasts & over and for Southern Hemisphere Thoroughbred three-time- pasts & up run over a distance of metres ( about 10 furlongs) in late March. It was held at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse before 2009. In 2010, the Dubai World Cup was first held at the new Meydan Racecourse on March 27, on a rainfall face known as Tapeta. Still, it was held as a dirt race again in 2015 due to the high conservation cost and being an unpopular condition among American actors. The race's first winner was the unborn United States Hall of Fame Thoroughbred Cigar, possessed by AllenE. Paulson. A shrine honouring that steed hangs outside the barn of Bill Mott at Belmont Park. In 2006 the Dubai World Cup was broadcast live on TVG Network and HRTV and taped latterly for showing on ABC. It was the first time that the race was shown on Public Television in the United States. The 2020 event was cancelled due to the COVID-19 epidemic. 2020 running The 25th edition of the race was listed to take place on 28 March 2020. On 12 March, it was blazoned that the race would go ahead as planned, but with no observers in attendance, due to the COVID-19 epidemic. Still, on 22 March, a further statement was released, publicizing that the race had been cancelled and that the 25th-anniversary fests would be held up until 2021 handling. Dubai Millennium Dubai Millennium (1996 – 2001) was a Thoroughbred racehorse and sire, trained in the United Kingdom and Dubai during his racing career which ran from 1998 and 2000. He's notable for winning a series of major races in 1999 and 2000 including the Dubai World Cup. He failed after contracting lawn sickness at the age of five. Background Dubai Millennium was foaled on 20 March 1996 at the Dalham Hall Stud. He was by the Mr Prospector stallion Seeking The Gold, out of the Prix de Pomone winner Colorado Dancer. Piecemeal from Dubai Millennium, Seeking the Gold got the winners of 27 Group One/ Grade I races including Pleasant Home, Jazil, and Bob and John Colorado Dancer was a son of Fall Aspen, a largely successful broodmare who produced eight winners of Group/ Graded races including Preakness Stakes winner Timber Country. Dubai Millennium was firstly transferred into training with David Loder at Newmarket and was ridden in all but one of his races by Frankie Dettori. He was originally named Yaazer1, but Sheikh Mohammed, the proprietor of Godolphin, renamed the recruit Dubai Millennium after he was identified2 as the most promising of his two-time-old fledglings. Assessment In the International Bracket (the forerunner of the World Thoroughbred Racehorse Rankings) Dubai Millennium was named the most stylish racehorse in the world in 2000 with a standing of 134, ahead of Sinndar and Montjeu (130). The standing was considered rather disappointing for those who had considered him a true" great". He'd preliminarily been awarded a standing of 127 for his 1999 performances. Dubai Millennium was given a Timeform standing of 140 — the loftiest since Dancing Brave in 1986, and the eighth-loftiest since the organisation was innovated in 1948. Dubai Millennium noway won a Cartier Racing Award. In 1999 he was beaten to the titles of Champion Three-Time-Old Recruit and Steed of the Time by Montjeu and Daylami independently. A time latterly Giant's Causeway was Horse of the Time, with Kalanisi being named Champion Older Horse. submitted by opuslog to u/opuslog [link] [comments] |

DfinityPad
Launch your Decentralized Projects & Dapps on Dfinity and Raise capital for your next blockchain powered business without worrying on which chain you should start.
Abstract
The crypto and Defi space is growing rapidly, with new projects and solutions coming up every other month. It's becoming very hard every other day for crypto projects to successfully tread in the crypto space due to the high competition in crypto. As a solution to the problems facing startup crypto projects, crypto launchpads were introduced. Launchpads are crypto projects designed to help these upcoming projects reach their full potential and mainstream adoption. Launchpads help new projects attract the community, thus making it easier for them to tread in crypto. The platforms are like advertising pools which also help garner crowdfunds. Projects listed in launchpads are vetted for the utter protection of the investors' wealth. Although there are multiple crypto launchpad projects, very few provide excellent and trusted services. DfinityPad is here to usher in new projects into the internet computer protocol.

Internet Computer Ecosystem Launchpads help new projects attract the community, thus making it easier for them to tread in crypto. About DfinityPad Launch your Decentralized Projects & Dapps on DfinityPad and raise capital for your next blockchain powered business without worrying on which chain you should start. 2021.06.28 19:08 pollytickled Q2 2021 Institutional Holdings
A quick note - as I have seen some people query this. These reports pertain to holdings as they were on 06/30. The filing date does not have any bearing on what they currently hold, it's just when they filed. Reports can be filed from 06/30 up to 08/16 for Q2. But all Q2 reports, whenever they’re reported, are based on what was held on 06/30.
Q2 Holdings Summary and Q1 Comparison
Q1 shares held by institutions: 29,192,000 (18.5%).
Q2 shares held by institutions: 42,174,027 (25.7%).
Net gain in shares held by institutions from Q1 to Q2: 12,982,027.
Net % gain: 7.2%
This should account also account for dilution in Q2 due to ATM as is based of current shares outstanding as detailed in recent 10Q - 163,959,541.
Data taken from Whale Wisdom.
A small disclaimer: different sources provide different numbers of total percentage owned by institutions. As such, it is difficult (at least, for me) for me to be completely sure on accuracy of the above number. What I can be sure of is that it's not less than this percentage, but could be slightly more. These calculations are definitely based on lower-estimates in the spirit of being conservative.

The Salesforce Discord Collective Presents: THE SPRING 21 RELEASE NOTES - ABRIDGED As Exciting as the new Samsung WF50R8500A release
CRITICAL STUFF
GENERAL STUFF
SALESFORCE CORE
SERVICE
FLOWS
For anyone who cares, we consider Flows a valid replacement for some Processes starting this release, with the caveat of more testing in Sandbox required compared to Processes. We still recommend wariness for enterprise orgs though, and do not consider it ready for prime-time in all contexts.
FIELD SERVICE
- Shift patterns solve a major pain point, and being able to mass create them is a big time saver and likely the first flow a consultant would have to build for dispatchers/territory managers. Combined with Shift Criteria this makes the entire concept a thoroughbred workhorse of a solution.
- Advanced recurrence is 'Pretty big' according to @lookasavage, but he ain't saying why, so... IT'S BIG I TELL YOU.
DEVELOPMENT
- Salesforce Functions will shortly be open as Beta. You might remember them as Evergreen. Would I use this in prod, or even sandbox, yet ? Nah. Would I research it for fun ? HELL YASS.
- FIELDS(ALL) / FIELDS(CUSTOM) etc now exist (but have a lot of limitations). Are meant to replace describes, not to replace field selection in actual SOQL queries. Mostly because there's a 200 record limit on SOQLs that use it.
- CI/CD starting to get easier, faster. Source Tracking between Local and SDB, and Org-dependent Unlocked Packages come expand your toolkit.
- Transaction Finalizers feature is in beta. Dev guide here. TL;DR you can know the status of a Queuable once it finishes without polling.
- Apex upgraded to 51.0 have some important behavioral changes to System and Schema functions, scroll to the bottom so you're aware.
- Minor changes to Lead Conversion that require analysis as it can simplify stuff for a lot of orgs
- SOQL for loop syntax, for (Account acc : [SELECT ...), is now better optimized
- Platform Events can now be configured with a and property.
- CMDT accessible via Static Methods, no need for SOQL anymore *SLDS gets a few more styling hooks and has breaking CSS changes
- ISVs, there's new APEX Analytics for you and better Release and Error handling. You also get Free Platform Cache in a small amount. Now you too can experience this beautiful website
- Shield Subscribers, RTE Monitoring Setup now available via MDAPI
DOGELAND
OTHER
Useless fact of the day: This ARN is 27% shorter than last release, and 48% shorter than Spring20.

2020.10.11 20:09 online_running407 Question about Missouri Fox Trotter
So Ive been considering buying the Fox Trotter for a while now. I currently am using the purple/wine colored thoroughbred you receive for free with the ultimate edition, i understand the differences in cores and stats between the two gorses but i have one query. I like how high up my character model is on the thoroughbred, is the Fox Trotter much smaller or is it more or less a similar size ?

2018.04.27 00:21 ecrowe The Screaming of the Cows
When our baby daughter was born, it was a bittersweet affair. My mother had died just months beforehand. We knew she had been ill for a while. We'd made the trip up north a couple of times; my mother held her hand to my wife's belly and felt our daughter kick. Her eyes lit up. She told us she couldn't wait until she was born. But cancer doesn't answer to prayers. Tilly was seven months pregnant when my mother died.
Just before the birth, we had a call from my Uncle to say a fairly good sum was to be deposited into an account in my name. It was more than I'd expected, and with a baby on the way, it was going to make such a difference.
Sarah was born a healthy baby girl. We were shocked to find out she was meant to be one of twins but early in the pregnancy she had absorbed her sister. We were told this was common and that it shouldn't have any detrimental effects. They did say that she could have a teratoma (twin tumour), however they would do routine scans to check.
We set up the spare room for her; with state of the art baby alarms so if she rolled over in the night we'd know. We also got a night-vision camera so we could keep an eye on her from our phones.
A few months after she was born, we had begun to get into a routine and Tilly did a good job looking after her when I went to work. I returned one Friday afternoon to a large crate that Tilly had brought into the living room. I checked the return address and immediately recognised it as my Great Uncle's.
"What's this?" I asked.
"I don't know, I've not opened it. I have to feed Sarah," she said, leaving the room.
I went to the garage to get a crowbar. Returning, I looked at the wooden box and for the life of me, had no idea what it contained.
I cranked the metal rod into the corner, the side came away with a satisfying crack and as it fell to the floor I saw the contents. I stood confused as I peered at the pristine rocking horse that sat within.
Tilly returned, holding Sarah and asked, "I heard the bang, so what is it?"
"It's a rocking horse," I said confused.
I pulled off the top of the crate with my hands and revealed it to my wife.
"Wow, that looks expensive. You say it's from your uncle?"
"Yeah."
I spent a few moments admiring it before seeing a small note attached to the saddle.
"What does it say?" Tilly asked as I removed it.
"'Dear Greg, I apologise for not sending this over earlier. It's been a stressful time for all involved, but your mother wanted you to have this. Treat it with the love she did.'"
"It certainly looks well made."
"Yes, it does, doesn't it."
Later that evening, when Sarah was down to sleep, we carried it upstairs.
"Christ, is this made of solid wood or something," Tilly grumbled, struggling with its weight as we negotiated the stairs.
"Just a couple more feet," I encouraged.
We stopped on the landing.
"Where are we going to put it?" she asked.
"I don't know. We can put it in Sarah's room?"
"No," she said, shaking her head, "She's too small for that."
"We can just put it under the window, it's probably what mum wanted."
"Maybe later, let's put it in the box room."
"Fine," I said, as we dragged it through the hallway and shoved it into the far corner of the room.
Tilly went to feed Sarah and I admired the rocking horse from afar. Something triggered in the back of my mind, nothing more than a vague image of me holding a plastic gun, telling my dad off for not knowing Tonto wasn't a horse.
Trying to raise a child in the middle of the city was an ordeal we didn't predict. As the clubs and bars let out, so did the lungs of the patrons. The early hours of the morning were peppered with the shouts and songs of drunk people, young and old, and on many occasion Sarah woke crying.
The baby monitor would buzz in unison with our phones, as the app announced our new baby girl was having problems sleeping.
"I'll go," I croaked one night.
Tilly muttered her thanks, rolled over and went straight back to sleep. I entered the hallway and the wooden horse caught my eye. Gently, it rocked back and forth. I walked into the room, my heart thumping hard in my chest. I reached out with my hand. Sarah's wailing rang out again. I turned and hurried into her room. She was lying on her back, crying. I picked her up.
"Are you hungry?" I asked.
She continued to scream.
Looking out the window, I saw a small group of drunk people sway in and out of traffic, singing some song I don't think any of them knew the lyrics to. I watched until they went out of sight, their drunken chorus lost to the night. I wound up the mobile above Sarah's bed and gently rocked her as the lullaby gradually sent her to sleep.
Carefully, I placed her back into her crib. I stayed for a moment, to check she was asleep and when I was sure, I left. In the hallway, I looked at the rocking horse, it sat motionless, lit ever so delicately by the ambient light. I went back to bed.
"I knew I would see you at some point. I wish it was under better circumstances, but it is very nice to meet Sarah all the same," my Great Uncle Jack said, then cooed at the bundle in Tilly's arms.
He slouched in his seat, the years weighing him down.
"Come a little closer," he beckoned me with his hand.
He adjusted his glasses and squinted.
"My how you've grown, how old are you now?"
"Thirty-two."
He reached out, his rough fingers trailed down my cheek fondly.
"You know, you can visit us anytime you like, we've missed you. We'd like to see Sarah as she grows."
He looked over to my Great Aunt Jess, who creaked back and forth in her rocking chair, blissfully in her own world, knitting what I assumed was something for Sarah.
"Sorry Uncle Jack, we live so far away, with all the travelling I do, I barely had time to visit mum before she died."
"It's okay, it's just when you get old, you want to see more of your family. I am very happy to see you. Why don't you sit down, you're making the room look untidy."
We sat on the couch opposite him. That distinctive smell of old wafted out of the fabric. A stale but familiar odour.
"So you want to know all about the rocking horse?"
I nodded.
"You loved that thing when you were a kid. You'd spend hours riding it, pretending to be a cowboy."
Aunt Jess looked up from her knitting and said, "We've got to get those Indians Simon, that's what you'd say."
"Simon?" I said, and I remembered.
I'd pretend I was in the wild west, I had two six shooters in my pockets. I smiled at the memory.
"Your dad told you to pretend you were The Lone Ranger, with your horse Tonto. And even though you were only four, you'd correct him and say Tonto was the Lone Ranger's friend, not the horse, and that your horse's name was Simon."
"Yeah, I remember that. Who was Simon?"
Jack's gaze drifted, "Your mother's twin brother."
Slightly taken aback, I queried, "Mum never mentioned him?"
"I wouldn't be surprised if she didn't remember him at all.
"Back when they were born, this was a farm. Her Dad and I used to run the place. He did the fields and I tended the animals."
His expression sobered as he began to recollect.
"What you probably don't know is that cows scream. It's a horrendous noise that can be heard for miles around, you never get used to it. I remember dreading those nights when the cows began to calve.
"For the cows to make milk, they need to produce offspring. And as soon as those little babies are born, we take them away."
He saw the horrified look on Tilly's face.
"The male calves, we sent them to slaughter the next day. As they couldn't produce milk, they'd be sold as veal.
"The female ones we fed on their mother's milk, but slowly transferred them over to a substitute. And those mothers, not knowing what happened to their newborns, they'd cry out in the night. They'd scream until they could only wheeze.
"Your mother couldn't stand the sound of their pain. She'd be awake all night crying. Her brother would hear her sob, leave his room, get in bed with her, and hug her until she fell asleep. They became inseparable after that."
"That's horrible," I blurted out without thinking.
"There is very little about farming animals that isn't. They say there is more suffering in dairy than in meat, but tell that to a milk drinking vegetarian.
"Simon liked to play out in the fields, run down the tractor lines playing hide and seek, go fishing by the lake, or pick apples from the orchard. Your mother would humour him. But what she really liked was to spend time with the horses. She loved to groom them, she could do that all day. But her brother always found this boring, and it wouldn't be long before he'd leave and she would cry again.
"Simon, caring beyond his years, put up with it. But one early spring day, bored, he pulled too hard on a thoroughbred tail and with one swift kick, he was taken from us. The doctor said he was gone before his head hit the hay."
Jack sighed.
"I'm sorry to hear that."
"Yeah, we all were. It was just so unexpected. He was buried over there," he pointed out the window, "one of his favourite places.
"That's where the orchard was, there are some apple trees left, as well as the tree he was buried next to. Your great granddad was a fine carpenter. He made an immaculate coffin for him out of one of Simon's most favourite apple trees, the one he added the rope swing to, it made my heart ache."
I got up and saw the overgrown trees that now marked the long since gone orchard and I wondered if he slept well.
"Your mother was different after that, it was as if part of her had died. They say that about twins don't they, that they are connected. It was unfortunately only a couple of days away from the calving season. And when those cows started screaming, so did your mother.
"She went and slept in her mother and father's bed, but they were no substitute for Simon. A couple of days into the season, they woke up and couldn't find her. They roused me and we searched the house.
"It was still dark when we went outside and saw the light. It was only a dot in the distance, a small speck in the orchard. We ran, worried it was the start of a fire. But when we got there, we saw your mother sleeping soundly under her thick duvet, next to her brother's grave. Her dying flashlight lay next to her. It was heartbreaking. When we woke her, it was as if she forgot he had died. The recognition showed in her eyes as they flicked between us and the grave.
"We told her that she had to come with us, that she would get ill sleeping out there. All the while, we heard the mother cows crying out for their lost offspring. The tears ran down her face like waterfalls, the pain of the loss of her brother so apparent, and we couldn't help her.
"When she had cried so much she fell backwards exhausted, my brother picked her up and took her back to the house."
"That wasn't the last time she did it. Her parents put a lock on her door, but that just ended with her jumping out of the window and spraining her ankle. That night, they found her back by the grave, her ankle black and blue. She must have hopped or crawled to get out there.
"It was the next day, when I left the milking shed and saw my brother pushing a wheelbarrow with Simon's coffin in it.
"'What are you doing,' I asked. He said, 'I can't be doing this any longer.'
"'What do you mean?'"
"'Sarah cannot keep coming out here at night, it's dangerous, who knows what might happen.'"
"'What are you going to do?'"
"'I'm going to put Simon in the furnace,' he replied, his eyes were red from crying."
"'You can't do that, what will your wife say?'"
"He stopped and let go of the wheel barrow. I winced as the coffin shifted in it."
"Our father heard what was happening and came over."
"We came up with a compromise. Later that day, we wrapped young Simon's body up in his favourite blanket and put him in the furnace.
"Your mother was furious when she saw the grave had been desecrated, she barricaded herself in her room and didn't come out for over a day. But when she did, she saw what her grandfather had made for her. That rocking horse of yours. He explained that she no longer had to go out to the grave to be close to him. That he would always be with her.
"She wasn't better overnight, but when the cows screamed, she didn't jump into bed with her parents and she didn't run out into the night and sleep next to the empty grave. When her father checked on her, she'd be fast asleep on the wooden horse, gently rocking back and forth. He swore that she wasn't moving it herself, as I am sure you understand."
I nodded.
"I never knew she went through that," I said, a tear trickled down my cheek that I promptly wiped away.
"It's okay, son. I don't think she remembered either. As she grew older, she relied on the rocking horse less and less, but did keep it in her room, until she was a teenager, when she asked for it to be moved out.
"When your grandad died, my brother and I sold off most of the farm. However, I made sure to find a little space for Simon's rocking horse. He was in the room above us until your mother died and it was bequeathed to you."
"Did it ever rock when it was here?" I asked.
"Well," he said putting his hands on his knees, before heaving himself out of the chair.
He shuffled over to the mantlepiece. He stood there for a moment, contemplating what he was going to say next.
"When your mother found out your lady wife was pregnant, she pleaded with us to change her will so that the horse would go to you. I don't know why. It stayed upstairs for a while after she died. To be honest, we had completely forgotten about it. But one day, we hear this racket. I made my way up the stairs, which is no easy feat at my age, to see that thing going hell for leather. I swear, it was like something possessed. And at that moment, Jess shouts up the stairs to tell me, you guys have had a healthy baby girl, and with that the horse stopped. I know I'm old, but I don't need telling twice. So, we arranged for it to be sent to you. I guess someone wanted it for your little one."
He sighed again, as if trying to work up courage.
"Your mother wanted you to have something else."
He picked up a small wooden box from the mantlepiece and handed it over.
"It's been hard losing your mother after caring for her so long. After my brother died, we were her only carers. Now, I'm not having a go, I promise. I know you couldn't be here and so did she. She said she was so proud of you and hoped to stay around to see the baby. But things, sometimes they don't work out."
"What's this?" I asked.
"I think you know what it is," he said crouching down in front of his drinks cabinet. His knees clicked in unison. He poured himself a small whiskey and offered us one. Tilly and I shook our heads. He downed the drink in one.
"It's your mother's ashes. I think you know where they need to go."
I stared at the rocking horse. It was obvious now that I knew it was there, a small brass latch on the seat. I opened it to reveal a hidden compartment. A duplicate of the box I held in my hand sat within. I placed mine next to it, uniting my mother with the brother she had lost so many years ago. I closed the latch and returned to bed.
Sarah cried in the early hours. Tilly slept as I crept out of bed. I heard creaks from the box room. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw the rocking horse rock. I tended to Sarah, before returning to the box room. As quietly as I could, I dragged the wooden horse from the room and into Sarah's.
I slept soundly for the rest of the night. In the morning I told Tilly what I had done, but she didn't protest.
Sarah still cries at night. But before I can get there, I hear the creaking in her room. She gurgles for a while and then falls silent. My mother and her brother are helping to look after her now.

2017.06.14 20:20 hodsct59 Pedigree: Where To Find And How To Look Up Pedigrees And The Most Effective Way To Use Them!!
I have for many years believed that pedigree decides the outcome of every race. Sure there are races that you really do not need pedigree to give you an idea of who is the best horse. But it is an awesome tool to use to identify horses that are flying under the radar. Not knowing the best way to use pedigree will often steer you off course and will give you the feeling that it is a waste of your time. However if you are more comfortable of using other peoples opinion for your betting decisions, then there is nothing really wrong with that other than you will struggle to show a profit on a consistent basis.
Myself, I like to make my own decision using breeding and while I still have bad days handicapping, I now have almost as many good days where I show big profits that more than make up for my losing days. I can not honestly say that has always been the case. Before I started using breeding as my main focus, I used to have an occasional huge profit day but by the time the next one came along, I had given back most or all of my winnings. That all changed about 7-8 years ago when I started digging deeper into bloodlines. I have gradually improved each and every year as I learn more about breeding, including the most effective way to use it.
Below, I will walk you through the best way to look up a five generation pedigree on all horses and the steps I use to find live longshots several times a month. I try to identify contenders before I waste a lot of time on pedigree. By this, I look for horses that showed any ability in the last race or two regardless of if they were beaten by 2 lengths or 25 lengths. Horses that show no ability and/or no run will almost always need more condition to be a factor in any race. Trainers who has shown a knack for knowing what each of their horses needs are(surfaces, distance, etc) usually moves way up my list.
There are two common ways to get five generations pedigree on probably 95 % of the horses that ever live. And if you learn to use it right, it will give you an edge that most experts have no knowledge of and like most handicappers, uses one or two horses in a pedigree to come to an usually uniformed decision. I simply use their pedigree to weed out who may like distance, turf, off tracks and even what class they may reach or perform in if trained correctly. I use the internet and my browser to find pretty much the history of horse racing.
First Method: Simply type in a horse's name in your browser follow by the word horse, thoroughbred, or both. Example: if I want Tapit five generation pedigree, I would type--- tapit horse---in my browser and press enter. Nothing more and nothing less. The next page that pops up will be all the results having to do with the horse Tapit. The first result that pops up in his case is Tapit Horse Pedigree- Pedigree Query. I click on that headliner and the next page that pops up is Tapit's 5 generation pedigree. There are 62 horses in a 5 generation pedigree but I normally use six or seven to make a informed decision time after time. I will speculate on this in a post today.
Second Method: This one requires a few more steps but helps more with current horses in training. Simply type in
www.equibase.com. when you are on this site, there are two places you can find the horse's pedigree without paying for it. On equibase main page, they will have a list of headers across the top portion of the page. You can use results header or entries header to find any horse that is active 5 generation pedigree. The results tab is for all thoroughbred horse racing results at all tracks ran in the last month. Hover over the results tab and it will drop down a category of sub tabs. Find the tab "summary results" and click on it. The next page will display "Summary Results" and list all US tracks and Woodbine dates that had racing for the past 30 days for free. Scroll down and find the track and the date you are looking for. Click on the date in that track's column. The next page will display every race ran on that day at the track you clicked on. If you want to see the result of any race on that day, you need to find the tab that says "view all races" and click on it. The next page will give you the result of every race ran on that day, exactly like the results you see at most race track, with payoffs. It will include all horses that ran in that race as also ran. Say you want to find out more about a horse breeding that ran 5th in the fourth race that day. You would simply scroll down to the 4th race, scan at the also ran and find the horse's name you are looking for and click on his name(Note: he does not have to run in the money to get this info). The next page that will pop up is the horse's name, trainer, owner, and jockey that rode him on that day. Next will be the individual race on that horse's lifetime races, including his most recent(available about 2-3 hours after he completes a race). But if you simply want to find his pedigree, simply scroll past all this and near the bottom center of page, you will see a "Free Five X Generation Pedigree" button. Click on that tab and it will pull up a five generation pedigree on the horse in question.
You can also do the same with entries tab but it is for upcoming races only and is posted from 3 days to a week(at smaller tracks) before the races are actually ran. Simply follow the same procedure as noted above. Hint: you must use the view all races tab to get all races and clicking on individual race tabs will usually not work properly.
Now that you have the best places to get breeding information, you are probably wondering what is the most effective way to use this information. While there are several ways to use this info, I will walk you through what I do and look for. I normally spend less than five minutes on any pedigree unless something about the horse or today's racing condition stands out to me. But until you become more familiar with each horse likes and/or dislikes, you will probably need to take a little more time to get it right.
First, I will mention the sire. I usually use the sire and his racing ability only. When I am looking at a sire, I want to know as much about his race record as I can remember. If he won at one distance multiple times or if he won at the distance only once. Any horse can get a dream trip or have a track bias aid them once, so multiple wins at the same distances usually signals that he is better than average. This is and has always been a better gauge of talent than a horse than ran fast only once. After he has a few crops, I will then tend to use what his foals are doing more so than his race record. Is his foals winning more often at sprints, distances, and/or fast or off tracks. Are they precious and win early or does it take them a few races to figure out what racing is all about. A GOOD SIRE WILL PASS ON CLASS AND RACING ABILITY TO HIS FOALS BUT HE WILL NOT BREED ANY FOALS THAT CAN GO FURTHER THAN HE DID WITHOUT SOME HELP FROM THE DAM AND HER FAMILY.
DAM & BROODMARE SIRE: This is the most important link in all pedigrees. The dam and her sire will usually identify just how far a foal wants to go and the surface they will enjoy the most. The broodmare sire will help determine if the horse will have an opportunity to increase the sire's best distance or if in fact it will harm the sire's best distance. This is why you will see most sires that enjoyed a mid distance race most during his racing career suddenly produce a horse that prefers to go much further than him. The same concept applies when a mid distance runner is bred to a sprinting broodmare sire. This foal will usually struggled to run even middle distance successfully but will be considered among the best sprinting, if anything.
The 2nd, 3rd, and 4th dams and their sires will often give you clues if the dam has received any distance help or more likely to produce sprint type runners. This is usually only important in the top races run each year and is less effective in average races. After all, the more heart a horse displays will likely lead to more and higher quality of wins. And when a G1 race is ran, it is often the only way to tell a real contender from a pretender, especially if they are similar elsewhere.
I rarely,if ever, use the rest of their pedigrees and will only if the same horses crosses within a pedigree. This will give most foals double or triple the opportunity to pick up the genes that these top horses displayed throughout their racing and breeding career. It is simple logic, the more opportunities a horse has to pick up top genes of his parents or grandparents, the more likely he will pick up some or all. Most of you believe the more you spread your money, the more likely you are to win. Same concept, but using genes and heart instead!!!
