2023.05.30 16:46 calebapple177 Advice / help
19M, 5’10, 290-300 pounds ish. Probably hovering around 310 since I’ve been binging (I can melt that off and get to 290 in like a week, water weight? Or I can lose easily, idk?)
I’m basically making this for motivation, but I’ve lost around 30 pounds since May 2022 (me not trying at all). Ive done a few diets mainly all under 1000 cals a day, sounds crazy but I can handle it. I think I’m gonna start it again. My goal is to be 180 by October-November. Is that doable?

2023.05.30 16:41 AmbitiousOption5 Best Practices for Confused Canadians?
As a Canadian, I measure distances in kilometers, heights in feet, weights in pounds (unless it's food, or shipping related, then grams/kilograms), temperature in °Celsius (unless it's a pool, then °F)...
Now, writing a Canadian MC in close 3rd, should I be keeping a consistent measurement system?
Also, are there any best practices for spelling? Do I colour my dialogue with 'u's, or drop them?
I try to remember what I've seen in recent reads, but a lifetime of both systems/spellings has partially blinded me. I don't even notice it anymore, so I'm hoping someone can confirm.

2023.05.30 16:40 Low_Brain_4717 Finally
I 22M have been smoking cigarettes( mostly poppers) an insane amount for almost the last 4 years, it’s gotten to the point where my breathing was being heavily affected mind you I’m only about 160 pounds 5”10 so I knew the cause of it, I’ve probably been on and off trying to quit for about 2 years now. I’m finally 48 hours popper free and it honestly feels great, I already feel improvements in my breathing, I feel less sluggish and honestly more open to the day knowing I’m not being chained down by a cigarette break every hour. This is honestly one of the hardest things I’ve ever done and I feel good about it right now, but any tips and tricks at all to fight the cravings and whatnot would be great.
Thanks! And good luck to everyone else we can do this :)

2023.05.30 16:35 matthna1 I don’t know how to dream.
So for this to make sense couple things. One I am currently 480 pounds and have always been big. Second I am married and live in a big city me and my wife have always wanted. Now here’s the problem. I don’t know what to do. We have been struggling for months but not anymore that others and we are making things work on the city with the support of her mother. But I am having such a hard time accepting that things will be ok and we are almost over our hurdle. We are almost over it. But my wife, she knows what she wants, even when plans change and something doesn’t work out she goes to the next Dream she has and knows the endgame. I don’t and I think it’s hurting how I see our city because it is what I want but I don’t know what I want in it. I have a job I like that will keep us stable with her job. But I don’t have a dream to where I want to go because I was never taught to. I have been morbidly obese my entire life and honestly didn’t think having dreams because I’ve always been treated like a walking corpse even by some of my friends. It’s hard to dream when you are told you could die at any moment. But here I am, losing weight, in my wife and I’s dream city but I don’t know where to go. I’m in the right direction but the damage is done and I just feel stranded and empty.

2023.05.30 16:33 Januaryfeb I am about to buy a stolen bicycle.
Hi everyone.
I've had 4 bikes stolen from me. Having your bike stolen is a bitch. My recent one got stolen 3 months ago and it still hurts.
An hour ago I saw my neighbour (young 16 year old trouble maker) with a really nice 400+- pound bike. I immediately asked him if he was willing to sell it to me for 100 pound. I could probably have gone lower but didn't. He enthusiastically said yes. He proceded to tell me he bought it for 400 pound etc. This is a stone cold lie. I would bet be my life that he's lying.
I KNOW this bike is stolen. I don't have any evidence but just know it.
I am conflicted because so much unjust has been done onto me. Like , ive spent roughly 2k on bikes and they all have been stolen. The police here is as useful as an expensive diet water bottle. They even have a picture of the last guy who stole my bike and they can't do anything.
I am conflicted.

### Training
I've been running on and off for as long as I can remember, but I really got serious about it around seven or eight years ago. Unfortunately, the pandemic messed up my plans for a Boston Qualifying attempt after I clocked a 1:23:30 HM in February 2020. Plus, I had some annoying hamstring tightness, which kept me from running faster than a 4:45/km pace for most of 2021 and 2022. Somehow (after months unsuccessful physio and trying different things), this all changed in late 2022. I was able to run a bit faster and do some decent tempos and intervals.
To gauge my progress and boost my confidence, I participated in a 10K race in March 2023, where I achieved a personal best time of 36:55, surpassing my previous record of 38:05. Encouraged by this improvement, I reignited my pursuit of a BQ and registered for a marathon scheduled in July. The Ottawa Half Marathon was an opportunity to assess my performance and make necessary adjustments.
In terms of training, I adhered to a structured plan, gradually increasing my mileage to build endurance. Leading up to the 10K race, my peak mileage reached approximately 90 kilometers. Following a brief recovery period post-race, I resumed training, pushing my weekly mileage to around 120 kilometers until Ramadan started in late March. I fasted for Ramadan so I reduced my training intensity during the month. After Ramadan, maintaining a consistent and rigorous training regimen for approximately five weeks leading up to the Ottawa Half Marathon.
The most important part of my training might have been my sauna sessions. Ottawa Race Weekend can be relatively hot, especially compared to the months leading up to it. In preparation, I implemented a specific training strategy to acclimate myself to the potential heat. Over a period of ten days leading up to the race, I dedicated 30 minutes each day to the sauna. I think this might have been the most important part of my training.
### Pre-race
I did a mini-taper of 5 days to prepare for the race. I also carb-loaded ahead of the race. I knew that it wouldn't be necessary for the half-marathon, but I wanted to do a dry run for my marathon in July. I ended up gaining 5 pounds in sugar and water weight, which probably wasn't ideal for this race, but will definitely be needed for the marathon. I had a very light dinner the day before the race and a bit of juice the morning of the juice. I also took caffeine pills, my normal routine for races.
### Race
I always get nervous for races. I feel like my heart is pounding and I am slightly short of breath. I also have a tendency to go out too fast. This race was no different. After the first few hundred metres, I looked at my watch and my pace was 3:35 (not sure it was accurate). So I decided to slow down a bit. The beginning of the race was downhill, which helped me not over exert myself. The first few kilometres I found a good rhythm running behind a couple of the other runners around me. I always try drafting in races if I can. I am not sure how much of a difference it makes, but it seems to make running easier. I also made sure to run through all the cooling stations and also pick up water to dump on myself to stay cool.
The downhill portion of the race ended after a few kilometres so my average pace kept creeping up throughout the race. I felt good and was pleased to hit the 10K under my goal pace. I knew there were a few uphills in the last few KM so I was pretty sure I would need to bank a bit of time.
The uphills started at about 15KM and I was pleased to still be relatively cool, which I think I can attribute to my sauna training. I also took a tylenol before the race, which I know is not recommended. Whether it's a placebo effect or not, this seems to help me stay cool and I have done it successfully in previous races and training.
I passed the lead woman at about 15KM (she seemed to be struggling with some kind of injury). At about 17KM or I was passed by another woman who was now in the lead. She was being paced by a few runners so I decided to join their pack. I had a bit left in the tank so slowly pulled away from them in the last few KMs. My legs were getting quite sore by the end of the race so I couldn't kick in the last KM like I wanted but I finished strong, 3:45 for the last KM according to my watch.
### Post-race
I was exhaused after pushing it in those final kilometers. I collapsed into a chair for a minute or so, catching my breath and letting the sweat dry. Then, I congratulated some of the people I ran with during the race, including the women's race winner.
I wasn't really hungry or thirsty when I finished (probably from the carb load), so I passed on all the food and drinks at the finish line. I live pretty close to the race, about 1.5 kilometers away, so I jogged home, changed into fresh clothes, and went back back out to cheer on my friends who were still running. We took a few post-race pics together before refueling with a well-deserved lunch.
I am still pretty sore two days after the race, which is not ideal for my marathon training, so this week is going to be lower mileage than I had planned, but I am overall very pleased with my performance and feel confident for July.

2023.05.30 16:26 mykepagan In defense of left-over brisket
When I make brisket (all three times :-) there are usually leftovers because I keep getting 15-pound briskets.
My pellet grill guru friends tell me that it must be consumed immediately, with huge risks taken in timing the cook exactly right to coincide with the arrival of guests, and that the only possible way to partially handle leftovers is to immediately vacuum seal and freeze it, and even then it is borderline inedible.
I say: Dudes, what is wrong with your brisket?
I just had brisket that I made a few days ago and kept in a plain ziplock bag in the fridge. It was 90% as good as freshly cooked.
Maybe I am very tolerant of my brisket, but if that is the case so are several people who ate those leftovers and loved them.

2023.05.30 16:26 throwawayy_012345765 How do you fucking STOP
Dawg. I need to lose 20 pounds rn.
HOW
DO
I
STOP
I am literally at a loss with myself! I mean I guess it could be worse - I’ve had a better past 2 weeks. But I’m still fucking addicted to sugar and even on days when I don’t pig out my diet is still unhealthy. I just binge because I hate myself and I feel like a failure. I feel like a shit daughter, a shit sister, a shit student, and overall like I contribute nothing to society. I can’t even be orthorexic or anorexic anymore and that used to be all I had going for me! I’m constantly stressed out because of my anxiety, OCD, and ED thoughts. Binging gives me relief for a moment even if I know I’ll hate myself so much afterwards. Isn’t it amazing how I can be so self aware and still not just FUCKING STOP?
Yes, therapy. I need therapy. But a therapist will want to dig into all my fucked up family shit, and all my other issues, and I don’t wanna fucking do that. I want to stop binging and I want to lose weight. Trauma and comorbidites be damned, I’ll work on that stuff when I’m older.
Yes I am a pathetic pitiful little creature.

2023.05.30 16:24 shmurthrowaway WIBTA for not paying for my friend
I am in a friendship group that consists of 4 people including myself. we all go to different schools and barely ever get to see each other, so we agreed that every half term or holiday we would plan a day to meet. this has been fine, most of the time we go to a park or a random cheap place to eat or get Boba.
one of my friends Art (not her real name) has some financial issues which is fine, I am more then happy to put in a few extra pounds so we can all have a good time. what irks me though, is that Art had agreed to go on an outing with us but has now said she cant afford the activity we are trying to do. one of my other friends in the group decided to speak on my behalf and tell Art that I would be happy to wait until Art could pay me back in September. I was okay with it but would have liked to say it myself so that I didn't feel peer pressured, but I left it at that.
later I was on social media and saw That Art had posted an image of tickets she had bought for a concert for a K-pop group she liked. she had already been to one in February and was now going again. this sorta pissed me off, because even though she could afford the £100 + ticket for these 2 groups, she couldn't afford to pay me back the £6 it would take for us to go out?
I know I'm being petty over £6 but this has happened before as well. Art has said something that involves not being able to pay, and I am the only one out of my friends that is willing to pay for her. I don't have an active source of income Either, but as the planner friend I'm expected to pay for trips and hope they will pay me back on the day.
I feel used and as if I'm a walking wallet for her. we have been good friends for the past 3 or 4 years, and I don't want to drop her or not include her, because as I said, we go to different schools , and I miss her, but I also don't want to seem as if I'm willing to pay for her every time either. I just want everyone to have a good time yknow?

2023.05.30 16:17 GhostInTheShadow I (28M) have been having neck pain with headaches and dizziness for roughly 2 months
28M, 5 foot 10, 146 pounds. Half pack of cigarettes a day. Problem location is neck and head. Recent medication is Meclizine and muscle relaxers
28(M) About 2 months ago at work, I was suddenly hit a whole body chill with a major headache and dizziness. I went to my doctor was treated for vertigo. I took the medication and did all the exercises he told me to do for roughly 2 weeks. It didn’t get better. I went to urgent care right after those 2 weeks. Did a urine test, blood test, x-ray, eye test and an EKG. Everything came back normal. They gave me some muscle relaxers and sent me on my way. Nothing helped. I went to the ER. Did all the same tests as before but also did an MRI. Everything came back normal again.
I still have the neck pain on the back of my neck going up to the back of my head. Which sometimes goes to my forehead in between my eyes. My eyes feel like they can’t concentrate. My entire body feels weak. Like I don’t have any strength. When I lay down at night my head feels weird and I get dizzy and can’t get comfortable.
Some days I feel ok and some days I can barely walk. There has to be something that was missed on all the tests that were done. Right? Any idea would be helpful. Thanks.

2023.05.30 16:13 fuzziekittens A set of poems that have helped with my grief.
Growing up so disconnected from my emotions, I frequently need pieces of media to help me through my grief. I love spoken word poetry and I wanted to share two poems by Andrea Gibson. While they are both called The Call, they are very different from each other and I have related to both in different stages of my healing. I hope they help you.
THE CALL, OPTION 1
I pay seventeen dollars online to track down the phone number
of the man who sexually assaulted me, and my friend asks, "What
do you plan to say?"
I'll tell him I know he lost
all his money gambling
and was forced
to sell the building
where he did what he did.
I'll tell him karma is a hell
of a feminist.
I'll tell him my silence
was his worst bet.
I'll tell him I'm watching
him through the bullet hole
he left in my childhood,
and if he comes within
two hundred miles
of a child's trust, my body
will start bleeding his name
all over Main Street in his middle-
of-somewhere town.
I'll tell him
he's the middle of nowhere:
a man with no stop
lights, the kind of place kids grow up
desperate to escape. I'll tell him
as soon as I got out,
I imagined him sanding off
his fingerprints, the guilt
filing him down to half his size.
When I met him,
he was the biggest man
in town, had set records
in the deadlift, was as old
as my father. I weighed
ninety-six pounds, was still
spending sleepovers practicing
how to kiss. I'll tell him how big
I am now. So big
I could make his address
the title of my next book,
and yes, I think he asked for it.
Asked me to play hangman
with his name on the local news,
asked me to spray paint ME TOO
across his pickup truck
and say, I dare you
to compare property damage
with someone you made property.
With someone whose puberty
you mutilated.
I'll say, Trauma
is a pretty word for how to die
every day of the year,
but my voice is alive
and right now it is the only justice
system I trust
to ensure men like you
understand the law
of gravity, understand
you will always be held down
by what you held down.
There is no such thing as rising
from someone else's ashes.
No man's spirit escapes the hell
he denies putting a child through,
which is to say, I am the only one
out of the two of us who survived
you, and I survived you
so beautifully. Even on my worst days,
my scars are the backroads
where kids sneak out their windows
and drive through the night
to hear poetry. I am so much
of who I dreamed I'd be
when I grew up, and what
does the boy you once were
think of the man you became?
A man running
from his own name.
A man who must wake
fifty times a night, terrified
the truth is somewhere breaking
from its chains and racing
for the world's ear.
When the truth gets there, will you try
to tell your friends I wanted it?
Will you try to tell your wife
how old of a soul I was?
At thirteen? At thirteen,
I had the youngest soul
in the universe.
I was so brand new
I thought reincarnation
was a flower I would wear
on my wrist
if someday someone asked me
to the ninth-grade dance.
I'd stand in my full-length mirror
and practice not blushing
when a slow song came on.
That's how old I was.
That's the kind of man you were.
The kind of man who makes children
grow up and search
for your phone number,
our bodies riddled with the wish
that all the records will say:
No one by that name exists.
THE CALL, OPTION 2
I pay seventeen dollars online to track down the phone number of the man who sexually
assaulted me, and my friend asks, "What do you plan to say?"
There is a world in which you did not touch me.
A world in which you thought about touching me
and were so nightmared by your own mind
you climbed inside your skull and bloodied your knees
crawling across the tundra of your history,
turning over every rock to chase out every worm
that might trick you into believing anything
could be cut in half and keep living.
There is a world in which you saw
how easily you could become an ax
splitting the personalities of children,
so swore your fingerprints
would be like the rings of trees, that your growth
could be counted on. In this world you have
groomed no one, and I am made of flyaways-
gleefully unclipped, wholly uncombed through,
braiding myself around a song, certain
I've invented dancing. Look at me
still calling you a hero. You built my trust
and never became the quake of earth
that shattered my foundation. Look at you
mothering your own nature, calling yourself home
at the first sign of dark. In this world you might
still be poor but not where it counts.
You might have still lost all your money,
but look at what you saved: Me
and Her and Her and Her and Her and Her
and the child you once were-how proud
he is to see who he's become. In this world
you still have secrets, but they are like my father's
secrets. The ones he doesn't know I know.
The ones my grandma told me: how he stayed
home nearly every weekend of high school
to keep my grandfather's drunken fist from the glass
of her jaw, how good my father was at pretending
he didn't love the movies, hadn't saved
all summer to buy a secondhand suit
for his first school dance. There is a world
in which you, too, only lie to save someone's life,
a world where you still live a stone's throw
from Canada but walk the river's shore never plotting
how you'd swim to freedom, never practicing
the backstroke of denial, never hoping I drowned
the letters you wrote me when I was graduating
eighth grade and you were forty and marrying
someone you said would never be your type.
The first time I called, your wife answered
the phone. I hung up, not strong enough
to be like you to throw a brick through
a woman's chest and have no doubts about it
being the right move, but there is a world
in which the truth is as soft as the pillow
that holds your wife's head when she dreams
about the day you met. In this world you wake up
before she does, make her coffee, read her horoscope
and forget to read your own. Where you stand behind her
when she looks in the mirror, tell her she's grown
more gorgeous every one of her sixty-seven years,
how you feel like the richest man in town
with your hands in the silver
of her hair. In this world I celebrate the news
of you having a daughter, a granddaughter, a niece.
In this world I don't panic when I see a pink tricycle
in your neighbor's driveway
as I'm driving to meet friends at the riverfront,
my hometown still a home you never haunted.
I roll the window down, holler your name
into the autumn air. You look up
from raking a pile of golden leaves, smile
and wave back to me. Can you see it?
I know you can. Everyone can
see who they were supposed to be.
It's the readiest grief in the world.
